Anyone surprised? Nope, not at all. What I want to know is what’s the process for getting those records unsealed and released against the white house’s lear desire to hide them.

It should all get subpoenaed as well. I know Nancy Smash has said to only focus on Ukraine, but at this point, it is clear that something is way beyond broken in how this is being handled. That said, I guarantee that Donnie fights the release of any Putin conversations all the way up to SCOTUS. Those will be the absolute last things he turns over.

I’m taking bets now about the date on which the White House announces that all of those transcripts were accidentally deleted from the closed system during a routine system backup.

Subpoena them all, now. They won’t get them until all the hoops have been gone through, but lay down the marker and start the process. Make sure that everything in that restricted access file is under notice so no one forgets about it.

My guess is that server has all kinds of crap. Remember that the thing that kicked this all off was Trump being shown up as an ignoramus on ordinary details with friendly foreign leaders. If he started hiding his phone records on a classified server to hide how embarrassingly ignorant he is, it’s a reasonable bet that they’ve started to keep all kinds of mundane crap there because somebody thought it might possibly look bad if it were released. It will be the repository of everything anyone wanted to hide for even the most trivial reason.

@Adam L Silverman: @Roger Moore: I was reading, and I forgot where, that basically after the leaked Mexico and Australia calls in 2017, that all of the call transcripts have been moved to the NSI server. That’s why a lot of the call read outs, that have been released, have been extremely sparse in detail/content. Other agencies depend on the call transcripts to generate those call read outs and if they don’t have access to them… well, that’s why Russia/other nations, announce that they’ve had a call with the asset and release what THEY say they talked about. Goes back to Adam’s analysis of his actions crippling our governments ability to conduct itself.
Edit: excuse me, per John Brennan, the call transcripts were moved to Directorate of Intelligence Programs classified system. Essentially, it’s the highest level system we have.

But were the sources of those leaks ever identified? In both cases, people in the other countries had an incentive to leak, since IIRC, Trump made bizarre threats in both.
Leto
@cain: Oh, definitely, it should be brought up. Two reasons why they’ll knock it down: 1) the executive order was signed by Obummer and we don’t have to follow anything that Ni-CLANG says! The only thing surprising about how Donnie and his minions break all the rules and norms is, well, nothing. Of course they’re going to try to lock up everything they can so that they don’t have to explain their actions to history or anyone else.
No doubt he’ll try to do what Huckabee, Rmoney, Snyder (and probably many more) did on leaving office – buy up all the hard drives and wiping them of official records. I hope that sensible people are working to make sure that doesn’t happen in Donnie’s case…

Referencing discussion from earlier threads on jailing people at the Capitol, I’ve seen it done. I used to give tours while interning for a representative, and a student was caught with marijuana in his backpack at the Capitol entrance under the cannon building. @Adam L Silverman: IIRC, at least one of the leaked calls was first published in foreign press (Mexico?).
My point being is that locking down anything and everything embarrassing in a way that broke several laws was a rash move unless they had high confidence that there was a leak from the WH.
Edit. Awww, WTF am I talking about. Every move Trump and the Trumpsters make is a rash move. And probably several people itching to leak were on the team loading the docs into the tippy top secret computer machine. Very doubtful Trump had any idea how any of this stuff worked. The dope was the staffer who thought this up. Since Trump didn’t understand anything, staff should have just said they were putting them in a tippy top secret place, and threw them a locked filing cabinet. If Trump had a WH pet, they could put the key on the kitty cat’s or the dog’s collar.

A corollary — the people who knew about the misclassification (not just those who actually did it) have some splainin to do which should be a lot easier to compel than release of records.

Adam L Silverman
@jl: You are not necessarily wrong. You have two distinct issues here. One that foreign leaders leak about the President because it embarrasses him. The other is that he hired a bunch of people that like to stab each other people in the back as they jockey for position with the President.

He is going to spill his guts because he isnt going to prison for Trumpov. I have to believe Trumpov is such a freaking moron that he didnt know he had hired a McCain guy. The mistake the GOP made is they didnt stand up to Trumpov. They didnt push back even a little which made this idiot think he could have get away with anything. Adelson, the Mercers, the Kochs could have given this idiot enough money to keep him fat and happy while performing at his Nazi rallies and passing their tax cuts and deregulating.

@Leto: I think McGahn is in A LOT OF TROUBLE! What we’ve got here, especially with the conversation with Kislyak and Lavrov in the Oval Office, is an ongoing crime – that the President doesn’t care if Russia interferes in US elections and that he’s once again given them at least tacit approval to do so – that is being covered up. And we still don’t know what is in the calls with Putin. If he didn’t tell this stuff to Mueller’s investigators, especially as he approved this misclassification scheme, is going to be a problem for him.
psycholinguist
Who will be the first Dem. candidate to pivot to a full-throated attack on Russia, as in “my first day in office I will release the hounds of hell on Putin, and not let up till he’s in exile or dead” I think that would catch fire right now. My money is on Kamala Harris, she’s been looking for a defining cause, and here it is. She would scare me if I was on the other end of things. And it would help inoculate against their attacks in the general, something Clinton understood to late to effectively counter

@moops:
IF the system backups are properly done, every day a complete backup is taken off site, where it will stay That means if someone manages to destroy the server, only the data entered since last night’s backup will be lost.
There’s probably also a real time backup update, that saves new or changed data to an offsite (or at least a separate system in the same installation) so that all the old data is kept with the date and user_id of all the changes to that original data.
That’s how it worked on our plain old state government data servers. We sent daily backups to a regional office some 60 miles away and much higher in elevation. In other words, to actually destroy all the data would take a really serious effort involving multiple systems in multiple locations. If it was done right setting things up in the first place.
Good night all!
