Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Schmidt just says fuck it, opens a tea shop.

Just because you believe it, that doesn’t make it true.

People are complicated. Love is not.

I’d like to think you all would remain faithful to me if i ever tried to have some of you killed.

This year has been the longest three days of putin’s life.

Accused of treason; bitches about the ratings. I am in awe.

Battle won, war still ongoing.

Historically it was a little unusual for the president to be an incoherent babbling moron.

Take hopelessness and turn it into resilience.

Second rate reporter says what?

Republicans don’t want a speaker to lead them; they want a hostage.

Wow, I can’t imagine what it was like to comment in morse code.

I’ve spoken to my cat about this, but it doesn’t seem to do any good.

A democracy can’t function when people can’t distinguish facts from lies.

The poor and middle-class pay taxes, the rich pay accountants, the wealthy pay politicians.

Seems like a complicated subject, have you tried yelling at it?

Technically true, but collectively nonsense

Good lord, these people are nuts.

Some judge needs to shut this circus down soon.

They fucked up the fucking up of the fuckup!

Impressively dumb. Congratulations.

Authoritarian republicans are opposed to freedom for the rest of us.

If you tweet it in all caps, that makes it true!

Shallow, uninformed, and lacking identity

Also reminds us that Harding had the grace to die in office. They weren’t all worried about him stealing the next election, too.

Just call it The Trump Fraud. Because Trump is a fraud. And the whole point was to get Ukraine, and who knows how many other countries to produce fraudulent material to damage Trump’s political opponents or help Trump’s campaign. That ties everything together, whether it is opening and investigation into Bidens, or producing some final report, or internal investigations to clear Russia of meddling in the 216 elections and producing accusations that the Mueller investigation was initiated under false pretenses with fake evidence,

If the fraud had gone according to plan, several countries were supposed to start opening investigations as if on their own accord that would help Trump and hurt his opponents. But they would not have done it independently and of their own accord. Rather, Trump secretly pressured them to do certain things, and communicated specific proposals on what it should be ‘the deliverables’.

    So, The Trump Fraud.

I just want to highlight that Mitch McConnell will be ruthlessly partisan in how he tells GOP senators to handle the House impeachment, and he will be very close lipped until he is sure of his “best” path forward. And his guidepost is going to be the GOP retaining control of the Senate, rather than who is president.

Trump has made a strategic mistake: he has delivered to McConnell 80-90% of what he wants (reactionary judges and a giant tax cut), and is now of limited use, if the GOP fails to keep the Senate in 2020.

If McConnell thinks the chances of the GOP are *relatively* much better with Trump not heading the ticket, he will probably test the waters with statements by GOPers who aren’t up for election until 2024.

McConnell is a total partisan animal, and is much better at it than anyone else in power. He will not hesitate to slit Trump’s throat the moment he believes it is – again – *relatively* advantageous.

Trump on illegal migrants: “You’d be amazed at how many African American people come up, and they have people living near them that are brutal killers. They’re killers. But you’re tough, you fight back. But sometimes you don’t win those fights, because these guys are tough too.”

I can’t believe he didn’t go with the big guy with tears in his eyes who came up and told him, “Sir…” Dale will let us know if there a Sir Story.

    ETA because jesus:

Trump is now attacking Van Jones at length for supposedly praising various people he’s “never heard of” for criminal justice reform, on some show, and not naming Trump. “I’M THE ONE THAT DID IT,” Trump shouts, saying he called up Jared Kushner to complain about Jones.

    @Mary G:

This sounds like Cheneyesque beating the drums for war. Two anonymous administration sources piggybacking on a Microsoft report that notes an uptick in hacking by “a threat group we call Phosphorus, which we believe originates from Iran and is linked to the Iranian government.”

The linked Times story, reported by Nicole Perlroth and David E. Sanger, notes that “hackers from North Korea and Russia have already started actively targeting organizations that work closely with 2020 presidential candidates,” as well as “current and former United States government officials, journalists covering political campaigns and accounts associated with a presidential campaign.” But the writers emphasize Iran and the Trump campaign.

The news that Iranian hackers targeted Mr. Trump came as his administration continues to weigh a cyberstrike against Iran to punish Tehran for what White House officials charge was an Iranian attack on Saudi oil facilities last month.

Wait, what’s this, way down in the last paragraph?

But it is not clear whether the group Microsoft identified reports to [Iran’s] Cyber Corps or is made up, deliberately, of freelancers and others whose affiliations are harder to trace.

    No problem. Message received.

Not saying Iranian hackers aren’t a problem, but they aren’t the only problem. The 400-pound guy in his basement is probably still hacking away. Just seems odd to single out Iran at this point in time.

I wish I could find anything humorous about any of this.

As it stands, we’re watching a sitting POTUS and AG attempt to criminalize political opposition to an authoritarian president, through the use of false charges. In real time. In broad daylight. Like some tin pot banana republic.

I just don’t think I can laugh at any of it.

@germy: Chrissy Stroop, an ex-Evangelical, at her blog in the weeks after the 16 election, had links and personal stories making a very strong case that the religion the white Evangelicals are steeped in is explicitly and deeply anti-democracy. They are trained to accept unquestioningly simple straightforward premises and answers presented by an authoritative figure==the preacher/televangelist.

No other/outside source of information is accepted or tolerated.

Although I grew up in a denomination that became a pillar of this culture, it was nowhere near so all-encompassing as what is today’s Evangelical reality. And from 89 to 04 I worked in an environment that surrounded me with members of this culture.

Despite my experience, Chrissy’s posts and links were terrifying. There is a real danger in this culture that many Democrats not raised in or living in this culture refuse to take seriously. They have little or no experience of a strong religious faith and do not realize or do not want to realize how it can completely dominate a person’s whole life. The failure to see and believe in the seriousness of the threat to our democracy is equally terrifying!

This is so Nazi version 2.

IIRC Hitler and gang were on the way to euthanize all non-perfect Aryans. It was only the strong sermon sent by a Bishop?Candinal? to be read aloud on a certain Sunday in all the churches in his district that strongly condemned any attempt to do this and called on all Catholics , even those in the military and working for the government to resist any order to carry out euthanization that prevented this plan. The Nazi leaders knew the Catholic soldiers and government workers would resist such orders and gave up their plans.

Some historians, including Catholic ones, have wondered if similar church action/sermons/directions might have prevented the Holocaust.

Not surprised the Sanders campaign soft-pedaled his medical issue by calling it “chest discomfort” but now it looks bad that they did that. Although, given Trump’s obvious medical issues, this is another case of “imagine if a Democrat tried to do what Trump does”. Trump’s attitude toward his medical issues (he literally can’t even walk straight anymore) would be like Sanders claiming he had really entered the hospital to inspect its medical delivery and claiming that the doctors had pronounced him as having “the heart of a 35 yo”.

    @Steve in the ATL:

ironically, it’s the same business model that Muslims use where they teach the teachers to go out to boondocks and brainwash the yokels to be right wing religious radicals.

That Muslims use? Quite a broad brush you’re using there.

    @MisterForkbeard:

My pipe dream is that Biden and Sanders both use this as an opportunity to say “You know what? Over 75 is just too old to start a presidential term. You can see this in Donald Trump, who is clearly going senile. I’m withdrawing and giving my support to Warren/Harris/Buttigieg

Amen, Amen! Trump is a malignant cancer and an existential threat to this planet. It’s time for Biden and Sanders to put this nation’s interests ahead of their personal ambitions and step aside,.

@Amir Khalid: common practice in the predominantly Muslim countries in the Middle East, based on my personal observations thereof. Pardon my imprecision—I’m full of grilled lamb and Pinot noir this evening.

ETA: and quit stressing me out. My Apple Watch just told me to breathe!

@debbie: The Queens library system is separate from that of NYC. I guess, a holdover arrangement from before the five boroughs consolidated. [Averts her gaze]

@Mary G: Oh, FFS. That’s just absurd. The architect should lose his license.
Palo Alto built a new branch library a few years ago. They had a sculpture partially blocking the sidewalk leading from the handicapped parking to the entrance. I emailed the library; they changed the sidewalk so that people in wheelchairs didn’t have to make a sharp turn. Only took a couple of weeks.
