Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

A dilettante blog from the great progressive state of West Virginia.

fuckem (in honor of the late great efgoldman)

Putin must be throwing ketchup at the walls.

Why did Dr. Oz lose? well, according to the exit polls, it’s because Fetterman won.

Presidents are not kings, and Plaintiff is not President.

A Senator Walker would be an insult to the state and the nation.

The words do not have to be perfect.

Not so fun when the rabbit gets the gun, is it?

Their freedom requires your slavery.

Everybody saw this coming.

And now I have baud making fun of me. this day can’t get worse.

It’s the corruption, stupid.

A sufficient plurality of insane, greedy people can tank any democratic system ever devised, apparently.

Wow, I can’t imagine what it was like to comment in morse code.

Peak wingnut was a lie.

Wow, you are pre-disappointed. How surprising.

If senate republicans had any shame, they’d die of it.

Within six months Twitter will be fully self-driving.

Despite his magical powers, I don’t think Trump is thinking this through, to be honest.

A Senator Walker would also be an insult to reason, rationality, and decency.

My years-long effort to drive family and friends away has really paid off this year.

Being the leader of the world means to be the leader of peace.

Republicans don’t want a speaker to lead them; they want a hostage.

Let there be snark.

Ahaha! Trumps perfect call to extort Ukraine was pushed by Rick Perry? Only problem is Giuliani, Parnas, Fruman were digging for Biden dirt and trying to prove Ukraine not Russia attacked our elections months before the phone call. Kislin on behalf of Trump has been since Aug

Rudy Giuliani has been working on getting info in Ukraine since 2017 and then resumed again a year ago. The only positive out of this shit show is watching trump burn his loyalists. Will get very interesting

(From May 13) Olga Lautman @olgaNYC1211

    Giuliani news..
Giuliani was supposed to receive an award on his canceled trip to Ukraine by a rabbi from ‘Friends of Anatevka’ org for his “fight for human rights”??This org is run by Igor Fruman who was under scrutiny for a mysterious $325k donation to Trump’s super pac.

The company was opened a month before coming into this large sum of cash to make a donation. Sounds like the money laundering continues

They have also been spotted with US Ambassador to Israel David Friedman as well as other Trump loyalists

    From 7/31/18 daily beast
Meet the Eastern European Mystery Donors Behind the Trump-Allied Super PAC
Global Energy Producers LLC is one of the biggest givers to America First Action. Figuring out where that money is coming from, however, is not easy.

    (May 13) Olga Lautman @olgaNYC1211

Chabad that Putin formed an alliance with in the 90’s really needs to be looked into. Putin enlisted Abramovich and Leviev as their biggest patrons.

    * The other guy Lev Parnas who was involved in the strange company that most likely laundered money into Trump’s super pac is one of the people helping dig for, fabricate, info to help Trump in starting investigations into Biden and Russia’s propaganda that Ukraine colluded

I’ll give him credit: one dummy saying another dummy gave him bad advice is not a bad gambit when all the facts…like literally ALL the facts…are against you.

And yet, as I posed to my RWNJ family members: “I thought it was ‘hearsay’…then it was a ‘perfect call’…then it was tireless dedication to uprooting ‘corruption’ (although strangely specific only to Ukraine and to the Bidens)…and now it is ‘Rick made me do it’ “?

They really do need to read that op-ed on accommodation. Could be an eye-opener to realize just why they keep doubling down on their support of an obviously corrupt leader.

Do the hard work, Republicans! Find someone less corrupt to represent your twin ideals of white supremacy and oligarchy! You can do this!

@Jeffro: We’ve seen Trump shifting his story before. The people I’d feel sorry for are the ones who’ve been out there defending Trump using story A, then Trump comes up with story B and invalidates their argument. That is, I’d feel sorry for them if I weren’t laughing so much. And if they were able to feel any sort of shame or embarrassment.

BTW who was the Trump spokesman a couple of years back who came right out and said “those facts are no longer operative”, or some phrase to that effect?

    Chicago Trib

MIAMI Over the summer, Dianne and Michael Pues got an ominous phone call from the business partner of a Ukrainian American entrepreneur who owes the couple more than $500,000 over a movie deal gone bad.

“He said the Ukrainians were upset because we were ‘a dangling participle’ and we needed to make a deal to make them go away,” Dianne Pues, who lives in New Jersey with her husband, recounted in a recent interview. “He said we no longer knew who we were dealing with and that the Ukrainians had ties all the way up to the State Department and the White House and they were partners with Rudy Giuliani.”

Working with Giuliani, the White House and the State Department was no idle boast. The “Ukrainians” are two South Florida businessmen named Lev Parnas and Igor Fruman who on Monday were sent letters by three House committees requesting information as part of an impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump.
    …
On Monday, three House committees subpoenaed Giuliani for documents relating to his efforts in Ukraine. They also sent letters to Parnas, Fruman and a third man, Semyon Kislin, “seeking documents and noticing depositions.”

At the same time he and Fruman have faced lawsuits over unpaid debts, the two men and their natural gas company, Global Energy Producers, have donated more than $400,000 to Republican candidates and committees supporting them in federal elections. A $325,000 donation to a pro-Trump super PAC was the subject of a complaint from a nonpartisan watchdog group.
    …
Giuliani has described the two men as legal clients and been photographed with them in the company of the president. …

Parnas was asked by the House to appear for a deposition on Oct. 10, according to a copy of the letter. Fruman was asked to appear the next day.

AFAIK there’s no definitive ruling on this. I’m sure Trump would be happy to argue whichever way is most beneficial to him, and it would be up to the Supreme Court to decide.

ETA: and as a practical matter, the 25th Amendment is unimportant. The same majority that could keep Trump out of power using the 25th Amendment could remove him from office permanently through impeachment. The only way it matters is if the 25th Amendment is somehow easier politically.

During his career as US President Richard Nixon’s press secretary, Ron Ziegler, who has died after a heart attack aged 63, delivered thousands of White House statements. But the only one that reverberates down the years came on April 17 1973, and consisted of two short sentences: “This is the operative statement. The others are inoperative.”

Don’t have time to do more than glance through the the thread., but can’t resist mentioning that besides all the other mountains of evidence Perry is not a mastermind of any kind, he thought the Dept of Energy was some kind of international marketing board. Kind of like the California Almond Growers Association of the US energy industry.

I have no clue what Perry’s stance on Trump’s electioneering crime spree was or is, but the idea he was a mastermind is doubtful, to understate it.

Another angle to this latest bit of toxic nonsense is that it shows Trump has about maxed out on the room for him to fail upward, even though ‘up’ at this point only means continued ability to destroy whatever he has control over and win a second term. Trump gets by with simple ABC marketing trials gimmicks. He just rolls out A, see if it flies, then B, see if it’s better or bombs, then if A isn’t flying high enough, roll out C for a spin.

That works when you are moving from one swindle to the next, you can bury the evidence in NDAs and court settlements. Don’t work so good when people are taking notes on what you said an hour ago, yesterday, last week, etc. Especially when the ABC turns into A, not A, A and not A, etc.

Hey, I thought it was a perfect call? Hey, I thought there wasn’t anything wrong with what you were doing because you put it all out in the open and shouted in from the WH lawn, and dragged half a dozen countries into your goofy insane conspiracy theories? Oh, it’s all a pile of dung, and Rick Perry’s fault? OK. Sure. That’s the ticket.

I encourage everybody go to the FB page of Penzeys Spices. It is probably the longest post Bill Penzey has ever made. And he isn’t even trying to sell something this time. A few short excerpts:

At last, a flat-out good seven days for America. This week the curtain was finally pulled back on how deeply un-American the Republican Party has become. This week made clear the Republican Party’s been hijacked by the one-two combo of unlimited political spending and foreign forces seeking to end the very concept of government of, by and for the people. From just the White House-released summary, the Ukraine scandal is a mandatory open and shut case for the impeachment, but it is also so much more.

From a distance it can be easy to see the forces behind what the Republican Party has become as attacking America’s liberal traditions, but it isn’t that at all. Just the opposite really. …Truth be told, what the Republican Party has become is entirely an attack on our country’s conservative values. Look at this president; what is conservative about him? Nothing. Nothing at all. And it’s his party now.

In this moment, we live at the heart of the struggle to defend American values both liberal and conservative. We don’t know what is coming next or even how we got here… at some point future historians will have to come up with a consensus of how the values of the Republican Party were rewritten. My take is that it is the propaganda of the media of the right that will take the blame.

You may not have been paying much attention this week, but the short version is the end is very near for this terrible turn the Republican Party has taken. The president’s Ukraine scandal is the big one. I get that it can be hard to believe any scandal will stick, but this one is different. This one is going to show you, from its very beginning, our nation has been built up from its bedrock to be ready for any political party that would crown their leader king. America is something special. Looks like now everybody’s going to have a front row seat for seeing why.

    There’s more. Go and read.

Less than two weeks ahead of the Pixel 4 flagship smartphone’s debut, Google is temporarily pulling the plug on a controversial “field research” program that offered subjects in US cities a $5 gift certificate in exchange for a scan of their face — after a New York Daily News report that one Google contracting agency was actively targeting homeless people in Atlanta and tricking unwitting college students into participating by pretending they would merely be testing a new app.

Google isn’t necessarily suspending the program for good. It says it’s just halted it while the company investigates, and will keep paying contractors in the meanwhile. Source

    @Jeffro:

I have been following the saga of your ongoing debate with your wingnut brother and father(-in-law?). I hope you will report back on their reactions to (and excuses for) this Trumpian shitstorm that is going down.

It’s developing so fast that I don’t think the wingnuts can keep their talking points straight. My own RWNJ brother has gone quiet except for one anti-Schiff and -Pelosi graphic that is so generic it could have been splooged out any time in the last year. “New hoax. Same swamp.”

Twitter has accepted nearly $1 million in ad spending from the anti-immigrant hate group FAIR, which was founded by a white nationalist. Twitter’s TOS prohibit hate groups from promoting posts, but apparently that doesn’t apply if you have enough cash. https://t.co/VnXzgsbOzd— Caroline Orr (@RVAwonk) October 4, 2019

@Steeplejack: They can’t keep up with it and they certainly can’t process it, even though I noted at the start (over 3 years ago!) that they would just keep spiraling down with their excuses and finding themselves in a place they never would have imagined even 6 months beforehand.

(Which is why I keep pinging them with “remember 36…30…24…18…12…even 6 months ago?” kind of stuff. I’m mean that way. But the truth is the truth, even if it hurts) It floors me that RWNJ bro has the same head-in-the-sand, ‘meh’ approach to everything that trumpov has led the GOP into. As if it really isn’t a big deal to the party or country (in that order).

That NYT “accommodation” op-ed I mentioned earlier might have sunk in a bit but I’ve been stupidly optimistic before. We’ll see how it goes…

The other day one of my coworkers brought up trump’s tantrum with Denmark that resulted in his canceling a visit. I had completely forgotten about that.

It was only 6 weeks ago

It is almost impossible to continually process this tragedy

I just read there are no White House staffers or members of the House or Senate GOP leadership booked for the Sunday shows tomorrow—and not for the lack of trying according to the report.

    They got nuthin.

Call your congressional reps (202-224-3122) and if they are R’s ask them if they support Whistleblowers; ask them if they support fair elections w/out outside foreign gov’t involvement; ask them if they support the democracy protesters in Hong Kong unlike the Prez. Put them on the hot seat like the woman in IA when she questioned Ernst in a town hall.

@Marcopolo: Maybe they will be busy trying to talk their staffers from running to Congress to keep themselves out of jail first thing Monday morning.

I don’t know if this hilarious and disgusting display is a new thing under the sun or not. I don’t remember seeing a heist flick where, in the middle of the caper, the boss proves himself so stupid and incompetent, and is so loathed by everyone, that the real drama is which of the flunkies runs to the cops and gets the best deal to stay out of jail. Is there a movie or a a play or novel like that? Or historical precedent?

I was worried about the WH stonewall policy working. But if all the flunkies are going to run to the fuzz to stay out of jail and keep their fines to a minimum, then the WH stonewall is disintegrating right before our eyes.

That’s what’s so scary — by recent accounts, Perry was the only one of Chump’s cabinet appointees to realize that he was in over his head and asked his staff for advice on what to do.

He’s as dumb as a rock and he’s STILL smarter than the rest of them, which is scary as hell.

Orange Lump is going to go through the whole cabinet. Ben Carson, Betsy Devos, the DHS twit, Azar, Munchkin, the VA guy. I hope Munchkin goes down hard. I don’t even know who else is in the cabinet anymore but Mrs.Mitch McConnell and Wilbur Ross will probably the last ones standing because Wilbur probably.has something on him via Putin and Mitch obviously he thinks will fry his ass if he tries to fry Elaine’s ass first.

The best though if he does attack Elaine. That would be epic. There will be some crazy shit going down with Elaine’s father as well if Trump insults her. Watching McConnell being put in such an uncomfortable position would be pretty awesome.

@cain: Ross laundered Trump and Russian money for years at the Bank of Cyprus. Ross can do whatever he wants. Sleep through meetings, commit serial perjury in front of Congress and in courts, have pretty much anyone who has every done business with him or worked for him drag him through lawsuits for fraud and other torts that end up in secret hushed up settlements. Trump has to keep him and say he is doing a great, tippy top, job.

If Trump gets down to throwing Ross under the bus, the Trumpergotterung, and Trumpnarok, has arrived. Everything will burn down and sink into the cold North Sea, or whatever happens in that thing, I forget. If we’re lucky, we’ll just get to watch it. If not, we’ll be the extras in the disaster.

It seems like all of these scumbags would have attorneys screaming “SAVE YOURSELF!!!” in their ears right now, but a couple of them are so stupid I don’t know if they’ll listen. I mean, DeVos, really – what can you say about someone in charge of a large loan operation who thinks a loan is a liability for the lender?

One thing that occurs to me is that some cabinet members may not actually be participating in the actual criminal acts. Sure, scrapping the Obama student finance rules to screw over college students and their families was a dick move, but it wasn’t illegal. Cuck Mnuchin may be the only one of that crowd who has actually participated in a major crime.

@jl: But the thing is, as a sociopathic narcissist, Trump is not capable of understanding that. The threat is not real to him, only ego threats (like ‘is Ross really loyal to me and will do what I want?) are real to him. It’s all emotional so to him the threat of Wilbur Ross is exactly the same as the threat of Ben Carson: he’s not capable of realistic threat assessment.

    This could get interesting.

Stop saying 4chan grade crap. It has long annoyed me that the alt-right are normalizing language that makes women out to be, not people, but herd animals to be possessed, and shames the shit out of males who won’t play along. I don’t like that language or what it stands for, and it comes off really weird here at Balloon Juice, which is mostly not full of alt-righters.

If you don’t get that, consider this: it’s a tell, about where you usually get your information.

Interesting. I’ve never been to 4chan, yet you apparently know that’s where it originates. I picked it up from either here or TPM, and I don’t think the people who have said it are misogynists. I thought it meant a guy who knows his wife or girlfriend is cheating on him but is in no position, for various reasons, to do anything about it. I never considered it to be an implication that his wife or girlfriend is property. Unfaithful, yes, but not property.

I think anyone familiar with my posts here or on TPM would know I’m not a misogynist. Maybe in the future, if you see someone using a word you don’t like but aren’t otherwise familiar with that person’s beliefs, a gentle correction would be more appropriate than the kind of accusation you made.

Anyway, if it is indeed considered by most to be a misogynistic term, I’m happy to stop using it.
