A Finnish reporter just asked President Sauli Niinistö of Finland what favors President Trump has asked of him.
There were audible gasps in the room.

Here's a snippet from Helsinki Times article, mostly about post-meeting event to Finnish media.

Could you burn the tapes of my conversation with Vladimir in Helsinki last year?

OT.
Got seven minutes? Compare then to now. Anything seem familiar?

“He was oriented,” Talk about damning with faint praise. And I hope the plutocrats heard the warning about reserve currency.

What are “quotes from Stormy Daniels’ memoir, “My Wild Ride on a Toadstool”?

Bold mine. Why is he still running around free?

The Disney ride lasts longer.

Nice Burns reference. To a louse reads very well with a few scotches. Pairs nicely with To a Mouse

Under the assumption that a major portion of the audience was American press, the “audible gasps” bother me. Not only are they too timid to ask such a question themselves, but they are so shocked that anyone would have the temerity they can’t help but gasp aloud.
Maybe we should have a few Finnish reporters at more news conferences, keep our boys and girls gasping in outrage that someone would not know their place and ask the obvious.

@NotMax: Thanks for the pointer. I’d heard about it, but never watched it before.
Director Q&A:
Sometimes it only takes “small” things to change history. Like, recently, a certain whistle-blower speaking up…
Cheers,
Scott.

@patrick II: I was shocked and annoyed by the NPR/ATC host Mary Louise Kelly introducing the audio of the question (and interview with the reporter):
That was not laughter – or at least not the reaction I heard.
Grrr….
Cheers,
Scott.

Cool. That explains the tremor in the Force.
Temps running in the high 80s rather than the mid-90s (and trade winds again seem to be blowing), so more pleasant.

He was quite a monster. The Roger Ailes/Rupert Murdoch of his day.

Disinformation note: Some guy posted a video in which he claims to be President Niinistö and then (I think) reads Alexandra Petri’s column on the subject, with apparently some fake Finnish thrown in. I strongly suggest not clicking on the video or sharing tweets with it in them. It may just be some guy who’s a jackass, or it may be disinformation intended to sow discord. Either way, avoid it.

I heard that the one referenced in <a href="

@Another Scott: Having listened to the clip, it does seem to me that there were some mordant chuckles, although not full-blown laughter. I’ve also hear the reaction described as “gasps,” but I wouldn’t say that fits either.

@jeffreyw: And a fine mess I’ve made me do.

What was Fat Bastard yelling about in that photo? On second thought I really don’t care.

Met the luckiest kid in
Sacto NorthernCalifornia. On my bicycle at the crosswalk, waiting to cross and turn left on the light at a “T” intersection. Stationary cars were stacked southbound on either side of the intersection as the light was changing to red. Northbound Audi SUV in the left turn lane took the turn on yellow, just as a motorcycle comes from my left, zooming south up the bicycle lane adjacent to the stopped traffic (so close I could have touched him), crosses the intersection and SMACKS into the still-turning Audi. The bike hits the grill dead square and bounced off, while the rider slides up the hood, up the windshield, and sails over and off to the right of the Audi, whereupon he lands on his feet and jogs off the road. Had to have been going 20+ when he hit.I don’t know how many gallons of adrenaline were pumping through him but other than banged shins, he claimed to be “just fine.” The Audi driver was far more shook up–watching this occur in front of your face takes its own toll. It being rush hour and nobody gushing blood, 9-1-1 only told me a unit would get there eventually. Half hour later nobody had, and I left after leaving my info as a (too damn close) witness.
Beyond the obvious, the kid was an unknowing beneficiary of European “vulnerable road user” safety measures now designed into their vehicles. Had it been this instead of that Audi I don’t know that he wouldn’t have ended up strained into the radiator.
Lucky guy is lucky. I go through the intersection at least 300 days/year and always, always wait to see whether people are minding the signal before I proceed.

@?BillinGlendaleCA: And I remember the anecdote about Harpo Marx during a visit stealing all the fur coats of the lady guests and draping them over the nude statues.

Kent
@Zinsky: My dream scenario. The man’s decline continues to accelerate but he rages at every hint he should step down for the good of the party. The GOP are too gutless to actually do anything about it. So they stick with him. By October he is literally incoherent in the debates and wobbling around on the verge of collapse. But it’s too late to put anyone else on the ballot. He collapes in a pool of drool on national TV but still refuses to give up. The Dems win 49 states, the Senate, and a bunch of state legislatures a month later. Trump gets carried out of the Oval on a stretcher in December and Pence takes office just in time to guide the transition.
They want him? They can have him. No do-overs.

@Jay: No guns allowed at the rallies, I assume?

@Another Scott:
Several yrs ago the PBS series The American Experience did a show called America and the Holocaust.
Watch it if you get the chance. There’s lots about the US antisemitism of the 20s and 30s—want ads, resorts, hospitals, college admissions, etc. There are clips from this Madison Sq Garden gathering.
Lots about Congress people like Will Rogers’ son trying to change US laws to let in Jewish children. And how many English kids were brought here to escape the Blitz.
Lots about how the US State Dept was extremely anti-semitic and put up many barriers in the Consulate in Lisbon blocking Jews trying to escape to US .from Europe.
I showed it several yrs to my German students. They were stunned. They had no idea there was such antisemitism in the US. Wouldn’t be much of a shock now.
But until recently many of us pretty much had the subliminal idea that the Nazis were evil partly because they were antisemitic. And we in US were good guys partly because we were not.

@Ladyraxterinok: I was eight years old when Germany surrendered. I was in high school during the McCarthy years. There was plenty of information available still about the Deutsches-Amerikaner Bund, Father Coughlin, the America First movement, even The Kingfish’s Every Man A King. I blame the Anti Defamation League and the hysterical condemnation of any criticism or doubt of Israel for driving the memory of all that underground. It is a shame that was made to happen. It would be better to keep an eye on those types, but I guess that’s starting to happen. Thanks very much for mentioning the PBS show, America and the Holocaust. I want to see if I can find it on the internet. Also, many thanks to NotMax and Another Scott for the link to the video. I’d heard about the rally, but never seen a video like this.
