Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Not so fun when the rabbit gets the gun, is it?

When I was faster i was always behind.

New McCarthy, same old McCarthyism.

Red lights blinking on democracy’s dashboard

The media handbook says “controversial” is the most negative description that can be used for a Republican.

Anyone who bans teaching American history has no right to shape America’s future.

Museums are not America’s attic for its racist shit.

Prediction: the gop will rethink its strategy of boycotting future committees.

The willow is too close to the house.

They think we are photo bombing their nice little lives.

Shallow, uninformed, and lacking identity

Bad people in a position to do bad things will do bad things because they are bad people. End of story.

I’m starting to think Jesus may have made a mistake saving people with no questions asked.

Give the craziest people you know everything they want and hope they don’t ask for more? Great plan.

“In this country American means white. everybody else has to hyphenate.”

If rights aren’t universal, they are privilege, not rights.

Fuck these fucking interesting times.

I am pretty sure these ‘journalists’ were not always such a bootlicking sycophants.

Someone should tell Republicans that violence is the last refuge of the incompetent, or possibly the first.

The arc of history bends toward the same old fuckery.

White supremacy is terrorism.

… pundit janitors mopping up after the gop

One lie, alone, tears the fabric of reality.

Conservatism: there are people the law protects but does not bind and others who the law binds but does not protect.

Loved this interview. I thought she was wonderful.

Mitzi Gaynor on starring with Rossano Brazzi in South Pacific: “Mama mia! So little fabric covering sooo much Italian”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nnMr6WOeth0&feature=youtu.be

And here is my very own grumpy cat. She is wondering what the hell I’m doing up at 4:30 am, before she’s even had a chance to fix up her hair.

    Mmmmm, love Rossano Brazzi.

    Especially in Summertime.

    And Rome Adventure.

I am asking for help for some cats that have gotten stranded in Colorado Springs, in particular, anyone who could foster or transport in the area (or possibly adopt). The very small rescue I work with in the Springs is short on fosters but can provide supplies and I would cover gas if transport is needed. You can email me at cats@colorado9lives dot com or leave a voicemail at 719 591-4640 if you can help or would like more information. Thank you.

I know it’s not one of your cooking threads, but food is on my mind. I’m trying a new roast chicken recipe today. I have perfected Ina Garten’s so I can make it in my sleep, but I wanted something different. So I’m going with Nigella’s Italian roasted chicken (rosemary and lemon in the cavity) with black olives, leeks and red, orange and yellow peppers. Sautéed zucchini and linguine Alfredo for sides. I’m psyched to try it. Olives are one of my all time favorite foods.

@emrys: I am going to be gone most of the day, but if you hit up Adam, Anne or Betty, with an email, maybe one of them can front page the kitties for you today.

@geg6: Love just about anything Nigella does, not so much on the olives, but the rest sounds yummy. And you’ve reminded me I’m behind on recipe posts. Where do the days get to, LOL

Just finished putting ingredients into the super duper bread machine and switching it on. Experimenting with the always successful challah loaf I sometimes make by adding cheese powder and cayenne pepper.

Food posts don’t always have to be recipe-based. For example, a “My Most Disastrous Cooking Story” thread might be fun.

(We heard about OzarkHilbilly’s misadventure with pineapple upside-down cake, there’s got to be more such to be shared and commiserated over.)

No, no, the fresh pineapple upside down cake, that was me, for a big party. IT was disgusting, horrible, terrible, vile smelling, slimy, and other bad adjectives and adverbs. Cheryl told me not to do it, but I didn’t see her helpful chemistry comment until it was in the oven, way too late.

OMG that was a disgusting vile pot of nasty, so glad I saw Cheryl’s comment before I took it out of the oven, although the appearance would have let me know NOT to take it next door for the dinner party. And the smell~!~

    @NotMax:

Okay, are you watching me? Because I just now had a cake fail. And with no discernable reason!

I collect Nordic Ware specialty cake pans. They come in different shapes and styles, from Bundt pans to special mini pans in cute shapes. I just got the pan that’s shaped like a sand castle and used a NordicWare vanilla bean cake mix. So it would have looked like a real sand castle!

But I must have overdone the Baker’s Joy spray because my lovely sand castle cake sank, just like on the beach. I’ve never had one flop before, so I’m pretty sad.

I was at pulmonary rehab this Friday afternoon and around 2:30 they were playing Guy Fieri’s Diners, Drive-In’s and Dives. There were at least 2 recipes that I wanted to try from that one episode. This’s is one:
    foodnetwork.com/recipes/baked-lemonade-pork-chops-recipe-2128858

This was the other thing they featured at a different restaurant:
