Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Hi god, it’s us. Thanks a heap, you’re having a great week and it’s only Thursday!

Shallow, uninformed, and lacking identity

Prediction: the GOP will rethink its strategy of boycotting future committees.

I’m pretty sure there’s only one Jack Smith.

It’s easy to sit in safety and prescribe what other people should be doing.

Let there be snark.

“Why isn’t this Snickers bar only a nickle?”

fuckem (in honor of the late great efgoldman)

No Justins, No Peace

Within six months Twitter will be fully self-driving.

Conservatism: there are some people the law protects but does not bind and others who the law binds but does not protect.

Seems like a complicated subject, have you tried yelling at it?

People are complicated. Love is not.

Not all heroes wear capes.

Putin must be throwing ketchup at the walls.

Do not shrug your shoulders and accept the normalization of untruths.

You don’t get to peddle hatred on saturday and offer condolences on sunday.

🎶 Those boots were made for mockin’ 🎵

We’ll be taking my thoughts and prayers to the ballot box.

The GOP couldn’t organize an orgy in a whorehouse with a fist full of 50s.

The next time the wall street journal editorial board speaks the truth will be the first.

My years-long effort to drive family and friends away has really paid off this year.

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires republicans to act in good faith.

“I never thought they’d lock HIM up,” sobbed a distraught member of the Lock Her Up Party.

Oh hey! Rudy's Ukraine extortion coconspirators, DiGenova and Toensing, are back from meeting with oligarch client in Vienna (who seems to have funded the whole operation) to talk with Lou Dobbs about the missing DNC server, Crowdstrike and Hillary's emails! pic.twitter.com/xPQtgn8cKW

.@MerriamWebster can we do "decompensating"?

“I am big. It’s the pictures that got small.”

Trump watches Lou Dobbs in the same sad way Norma Desmond watched her movies every night.

Through our Dementia hazed vision, DNC server, Crowdstrike and Hillary’s emails ring a bell in us oldster’s semi-consciousness, and we know Dobbs is looking out for us.

The house in Sunset Blvd is the Jenkins/Getty* house that was on Wilshire between Irving and Lorraine(yes it took up a whole block on Wilshire). It was torn down by ol’ J. Paul to build a large office building for his oil company(Tidewater) that still exists today and is called the Harbour Building. Crenshaw Blvd. ends at Wilshire in front of the Harbour Building.

*It’s unclear if J. Paul ever lived in the house or if he just bought it for one of his ex-wives.

I’m late as fuck with this but yesterday someone was looking for 101 Dalmatians. Most classic Disney animation is in the public domain and thus available for free on Vimeo, no sign up necessary:

    Direct link to film: https://vimeo.com/46838098

Archive.org has a ton of classic Disney as well but the Vimeo prints are better quality IMHO.

I don’t have anything real erudite to say about the passing of Congressman Cummings, other than it really sucks, on multiple levels, and I hope that his family can process the grief with grace and serenity.

Hopefully the next (wo)man up in the Oversight Cmtt. will handle proceedings with the same doggedness as the departed Elijah did.

@OzarkHillbilly: My Congressman. RIP. Shit to the Nth.

    Wonder who becomes committee chair.

Looks like the seat remains vacant until filled by election. We’ll see what Governor Hogan sets for a date. My uninformed guess is that he lets it ride to next year’s primary & general election – so MD-07 will be without congressional representation for the next 14.5 months…

I’ve been out of touch with local politics for some years…but AFAICT there is no obvious successor for the seat. Cummings’ predecessor Kweisi Mfume turns 71 next week & last ran for office in the 2006 Democratic primary for U.S. Senate. Looks like it’ll be a rugby scrum. ETA: MD-07 is 60% African-American but without a clear front-runner who knows who will emerge from what might be a crowded field.

    @hervevillechaizelounge:
101 Dalmatians book was written by Dodie Smith. She also wrote the great coming of age book I Capture the Castle, often on lists of great or important books of the 20th century.

I’ve read it and found it fascinating.

@hervevillechaizelounge: Almost zero Disney works are in the public domain. Steamnoat Willy is one of the main reasons our copyright laws are so ridiculaus. Everytime Mickey came up to go public, ouila the copyight law was changed to add years to Disney’s ownership. If Vimeo has anything from Disney, they are paying for it.

Disney has done something with their animated properties since Snow White. After the initial run, they would put it in the vault for @ 7 years the re-release it to a whole new bunch of kids. They continued the practice with physical media. If they said it was going into the vault you’d better grab it. I had a DVD of “The Little Mermaid” that was selling for $60-$80 while it was in the vault.
