    RIP Elijah Cummings, my Congressman since 1996. If his successor in MD-07 (who in all likelihood will not take office until January 2021) has half his chops we’ll be lucky.

    Even ignoring impeachment, 2020 is going to be a crazy political year here at Casa Zio Cosimo. There’s no obvious successor to Rep. Cummings. The current Mayor was City Council President until the elected Mayor resigned under a cloud of scandal, & may be vulnerable. My long-time City Council person is retiring – again, no obvious successor. The April 28 Democratic primary is probably going to be a free-for-all.

    Low interest rates are encouraging companies to take on a level of debt that risks becoming a $19tn (£15tn) timebomb in the event of another global recession, the International Monetary Fund has said.

    In its half-yearly update on the state of the world’s financial markets, the IMF said that almost 40% of the corporate debt in eight leading countries – the US, China, Japan, Germany, Britain, France, Italy and Spain – would be impossible to service if there was a downturn half as serious as that of a decade ago.

    The IMF noted that the stimulus provided by central banks in both developed and developing countries had the side-effect of encouraging firms to borrow more, even though many would have trouble paying it back.

    Officials at the Washington-based organisation fear that the buildup of debt makes the global financial system highly vulnerable and are telling member states not to repeat the mistake of the early 2000s, when warning signs of a possible market meltdown were ignored.

    The IMF said share prices in the US and Japan appeared to be overvalued, while the credit spreads in bond markets – the compensation demanded by investors against risk – seemed to be too low, given the state of the global economy.

    NPR had an impeachment story that was good! A timeline, factual, tells the story of what happened with Ukraine. Then (as usual) they felt they had to do “news analysis” with a very sympathetic portrait of Sondland.

    That didn’t go so well though, IMO. They asked someone who has worked with him on “deals” in Portland if Sondland was ethical and the guy wouldn’t answer the question :)

    And the most bitter feeling that I have regarding that thought process is how hard it is for me to not ‘celebrate’ when someone like an Antonin Scalia up and dies, knowing how badly he has poisoned our discourse and altered the trajectory of policy.

    Once again, they will spit the most vile of venom when we don’t canonize their heroes when they die, and speak of those on our side who pass on or are killed as if a demon was banished back to the fire-pits of Hell.

    To me, Pelosi is one of the few “institutional actors” who handled Trump’s presidency well. She notes how insane and corrupt he is, but that doesn’t seem to rattle her- she just carries on and is quite effective as a political opponent. She was up for this- the challenge came and she met it. She held. You can count those people on one hand.

    OT: Morning everyone. So a year ago, this happened. I want to take a minute and thank everyone here for their continued support. The community here has helped me more than you can know, and I wanted to say thank you for that.

    I would also like to give an update on where I am physically: I’ve been walking without my cane for a few months now. It’s still a bit unsightly at times, but it’s a hell of a lot better. My left knee can flex to, approx, 110-115 degrees, right is at 105. I’ve regained a good bit of my flexibility, but with that comes more pains and aches. It’s a seesaw battle there. For some bigger news: about a month ago I started riding one of my bicycles again. I finally had to buy the silly bike shorts with padding in it to protect my perennial area, but I can do it. I still need another, roughly, 10 degrees of flexion in my knees to really be efficient, but I’m doing it. And yesterday I jogged for the first time. I call it my “ambulatory shamble”, but I did it for about 90 seconds. It’s basically taken a years worth of work to get those 90 seconds. It hurt like the absolute dickens, but I’m happy.

    I’m logging off for the day from everything so don’t burn the place down, hide the mustard, and I’ll see you Jackals later!

    I believe there’s a little bit more going on here. Trump does have more of a worldview than that, if much less than most people. He thought the phone call vindicated him because he believes he was requesting real proof of his enemies’ real crimes, which makes him a hero. The letter is his schmoozing style of deal making. He’s a brilliant deal maker (cough cough) so seeing him performing his art must wow the critics. He’s an extreme misogynist, and his dealings with Nancy Pelosi have brought this up before: It is obvious to him that everyone thinks a woman standing up to men is an unhinged bitch. This photo should bring every man in the country to his side.

    It is not well appreciated in most of the USA that the first deaths of the Civil War occurred in Baltimore during the “Pratt Street Riot”. (You could look it up here.)

    On May 13, 1861 General Benjamin F. Butler entered Baltimore by rail with 1,000 Federal soldiers and, under cover of a thunderstorm, quietly took possession of Federal Hill[on the southern shore of the Inner Harbor]. Butler fortified his position and trained his guns upon the city, threatening its destruction. Butler then sent a letter to the commander of Fort McHenry: “I have taken possession of Baltimore. My troops are on Federal Hill, which I can hold with the aid of my artillery. If I am attacked to-night, please open upon Monument Square with your mortars.” Butler went on to occupy Baltimore and declared martial law.

    During this period in spring 1861, Baltimore Mayor Brown, the city council, the police commissioner, and the entire Board of Police, were arrested and imprisoned at Fort McHenry without charges; Lincoln ignored a writ of habeas corpus in the case of a Confederate sympathizer; and 1/3 of the MD legislature was arrested on suspicion of Confederate sympathies. (Again, you could look it up.)

    @Uncle Cosmo: We were living near Baltimore when they opened a new Civil War Museum (maybe the early 90s?). Baltimore is still Confederate-friendly. Those plaques were very pro-South and anti-Lincoln. And yes, they talked about the Pratt Street Riot.

    I learned at other Civil War sites that Maryland sent troops to both armies.

    I didn’t pay much attention to history when I was a student. I blame it on an approach to history that was mostly memorizing dates and names of battles. So I knew there was something called the Mason-Dixon Line but didn’t have any idea where it was. I had been living in Maryland several years before I discovered to my shock that I was living below it.

It was never *quite* part of the solid red Southern bloc–it went Republican in the landslides of 1972, 1984 and 1988, but almost every state did–and not in 1980. I suppose it went almost straight from Dixiecrat-blue to modern-Democratic-coalition blue.

The opponents to any kind of Kurdish state in the Middle east only include: Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia and Turkey. They have no real chance, and that is too bad.

    @frosty: My mother was from Roanoke VA (but lived in N CA) and I can testify to what “Bless your heart” means. Misterpuff has it just right. The way I’ve heard it used, not only does it carry “F**ck you”, but also a taste of you’re mentally and/or socially deficient.

    @Mohagan: Both of my Missouri aunts said, “Bless his/her heart”. The favorite, Aunt Funny, would laugh when she said it. Aunt Crabby made it sound like a curse.

    @BlueDWarrior: I wanted Scalia off the fucking court and death was not the only way to accomplish that. So, I didn’t wish the guy dead but I sure did read of his demise with great pleasure.

    Trump, OTOH, I wish him dead every fucking day and I’ll still wish him dead every fucking day when he’s no longer POtuS. Fuck that motherfucker. The world is better off without some people in it, prove me wrong.

    As for the fuckers rejoicing that Cummings is dead… show me what he did that was so horrible. That’s the difference between me wishing Trump dead and fascists rejoicing over Cummings’ death.
