Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Republicans are radicals, not conservatives.

We are builders in a constant struggle with destroyers. let’s win this.

Conservatism: there are some people the law protects but does not bind and others who the law binds but does not protect.

Let’s finish the job.

They traffic in fear. it is their only currency. if we are fearful, they are winning.

Anyone who bans teaching American history has no right to shape America’s future.

When I decide to be condescending, you won’t have to dream up a fantasy about it.

I didn’t have alien invasion on my 2023 BINGO card.

When do we start airlifting the women and children out of Texas?

Nothing worth doing is easy.

Let me eat cake. The rest of you could stand to lose some weight, frankly.

Infrastructure week. at last.

The GOP couldn’t organize an orgy in a whorehouse with a fist full of 50s.

Within six months Twitter will be fully self-driving.

Pessimism assures that nothing of any importance will change.

Take hopelessness and turn it into resilience.

Let’s not be the monsters we hate.

You can’t love your country only when you win.

Too often we confuse noise with substance. too often we confuse setbacks with defeat.

Make the republican party small enough to drown in a bathtub.

The next time the wall street journal editorial board speaks the truth will be the first.

Our job is not to persuade republicans but to defeat them.

It’s easy to sit in safety and prescribe what other people should be doing.

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Just not a professional Repub, like Dick Cheney:

the 'oil' is concentrated in Derr Ezzor where US troops are packing up & leaving. They have to because with US troops ordered out of Rojava the only way to supply them will be by parachute. Russian mercs and Iran-backed militias are already chomping at the bit to fill the vacuum. https://t.co/oxofL7AnBV

— Zeddy (@Zeddary) October 18, 2019

it's also not much. Syria's oil output is far smaller than Iraq, Iran or Saudi Arabia. A nice payday for a kleptocrat and a lifeline to a struggling dictator like Assad but hardly a strategic asset for a superpower.

Amateur climber scales replica segment of Trump’s Wall, judges it as meh climbing challenge.

DS: You think it’s something that a novice climber could handle pretty comfortably?

PF: I’m a novice climber, and I handled it pretty comfortably. After that we went off and we climbed a bunch of rock climbing routes, and those are all rated, right? I would say it was significantly easier than any of the climbs that we were climbing, and the easier of those was probably, I don’t know, a 5.8. So I’d say it’s easier than a 5.8.

DS: Okay. If you had to put a number on it, where might that fall?

PF: I don’t know, 5.6, 5.7. I don’t actually know the American ranking system that well. Most of my climbing has been in the UK. What I am confident saying is that it’s easier than 5.8s that we climbed.

DS: Did you feel that a non-climber could have made their way up?

PF: Yes. I wasn’t using my rock climbing training, particularly. Other than the training to trust the rope and not be too afraid of the height. But that is an advantage that you wouldn’t have without the rope.

DS: Even if you accepted the premise that the border wall is something worth spending money on, how would you assess the specific execution of it?

PF: Well, I would definitely take issue with that premise [laughing]. I’m sure that, not I really want to—does it make it less fun if I don’t express an opinion on that? I’d rather engage with the premise than just accept it.

“I don’t think he knows what he’s doing.” — Brett McGurk, interview with Chuck Todd.

This would be a hilarious addition to standard New Yorker cartoon captions, except that McGurk is talking about some of the ways in which TFG’s actions in Syria and with Erdogan are both a strategic disaster in the making for U.S., and a humanitarian disaster for the Kurds and others in the way.

“So President Erdogan is heading to Russia to see president Putin in four days and I suspect they already have lines on a map that they’ve divvied up and the president of the United States is pretty much irrelevant here,” he noted. “And our influence is just rapidly receding as we leave our bases and blow them up or hand them to the Russians. So our ability to influence this situation is extremely limited.”

“And it is deeply troubling when President Erdoğan announces to the world, as he did again today, that he plans to clean out this entire area and repopulate it with two to three million people, as Richard just reported. And United States appears now to have ratified this plan,” McGurk said. “I don’t think Trump understands any of this. I don’t think he knows what he’s doing. I think diplomats are trying to scramble to buy some time in what has been a cascading crisis with Americans in harm’s way.”

Our glorification of oafish clowns will be the end of us.

I kind of wonder what HRC’s motive was for dropping a bomb like that on Tulsi Gabbard, what with Gabbard polling less than half the margin of error at any given time.

Makes me think she knows something, and is getting it out there preemptively before TG suddenly starts getting lots of dark money from nowhere. Or maybe she’s preempting TG’s inevitable third party run, based on feigned indignation of unfair treatment. She was already tipping her hand on that score before the last debate.

    Maybe a bit of both?

He stopped making American troops defend an entire race of brown people from being killed by a petty dictator. It legitimately baffles him that anyone sees anything in that sentence as bad.

When I get fundraising calls from committees and organizations, I tell them first how many orgs we support monthly (Planned Parenthood, ACLU, SPLC, Eric Holder’s anti-gerrymandering group, a couple of others) , and then tell them I mostly support individual (liberal Democratic) candidates in specific races (mostly that we might flip!). Somehow, the ATF is still allowed to do their job in this administration. I expect changes forthwith.

A Nevada man has been indicted by a federal grand jury in Sacramento on charges that he sold dozens of firearms in California, including weapons that were later seized by law enforcement as far away as Chiapas, Mexico.

Gary Keith Osterhout, a Sparks, Nevada, man who formerly lived in Tracy, was charged in a six-count indictment that resulted in federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives agents seizing nearly 500 weapons from him.

The case began with the ATF and Sacramento Police Department jointly investigating guns being purchased by a south Sacramento gang. Their efforts led them back to Osterhout as having originally sold one of the weapons, authorities say. Osterhout could not be reached for comment, but court documents say he sold 45 weapons to undercover buyers – 35 of them in roadside sales from his car in Truckee and Emigrant Gap – as part of an illegal firearms dealing business he operated by buying weapons at gun shows in Reno or online and reselling them at a profit.

Court documents say that undercover buyers purchased 45 weapons from Osterhout from May through November 2018 at buys in Truckee, Emigrant Gap, Reno and Verdi, Nevada, and that authorities seized another 436 weapons from his home.

Osterhout first came to the ATF’s attention after he purchased a firearm from a federal firearms license dealer and it later ended up being sold by a convicted felon during an undercover buy operation.

“This transaction took place 31 days after Osterhout lawfully purchased the firearm,” according to a search warrant affidavit by ATF Special Agent Mark Giacomantonio. “I subsequently reviewed firearm purchase records for Osterhout, which revealed that Osterhout has been the initial purchaser on at least 14 firearms that have been recovered by law enforcement as part of criminal investigation(s).”

i sit and wonder, if our worst fears about what has transpired come true, and by that I mean that one of our political parties have sold themselves out to a foreign entity in exchange of being able to execute their political agenda and subverting 200+ years of Democracy (more or less), just how ludicrous its going to be in the media, if all of this comes to light and the players that we’ve long suspected to have been acting in bad faith are proven to have done so in regards to denying people their right to vote, subverting local elections local, state and nationally and packed the courts in order to make them a partisan extension of their agenda to extend far beyond the elections themselves…How is it that these people that have been in the wrong, for so long and so egregiously, are forced to spin that they’ve been carrying water for traitors, people with no more moral and ethical compass other than what’s in it for me?

I shudder at the thought of the long slog that will be needed to remove this shit from our discourse/society/everyday lives and how to keep from surrendering to my outrage at what they have done, in seeking not only punishment but retribution. @piratedan: I think we’re there. Fortunately we still have journalists who are doing excellent work. We also have too many (NYT political reporters) who have been engaged to pimp propatainment for the regime. My framing is over simplified but it explains why certain actors are behaving they way they are. I’ll include AMessNBC in there as well. I’ve been saying for the past 3 years there are forces who want to destroy the Democratic party who, like it or not. are the last line of defense against fascism. It’s that simple. Now ask yourself why Dems are treated the way there are in the media and why the Sanders and the Michael Moores (who constantly drag Democrats) are constantly softballed on TV talk shows.

That being said we are not powerless. I’m always thinking about African Americans particularly in the South who endured fascism, terrorism, suppression, beatings, rapes, and lynchings for hundreds of years. We white people are just scratching the surface of comprehending what they’ve known for centuries. They have not been defeated and we don’t have to accept defeat either.

For those that haven’t done it, the harness hooks around the vertical element, lean back and you create a lever which puts force into your legs forcing your feet against the vertical element. So long as you have enough friction between your shoes and the vertical element, you’ll stay there. Periodically shift your weight, scooch the harness up, and just climb upward.

Similar technique here. This person is using their arms instead of a harness to create the lever, and hooks a loop of rope or whatever around his feet so he can increase the surface area against the tree in order to improve the friction so his feet don’t slip. A heavy rubber strap (pretty common in moving kits) would work quite nicely. $2 each off Amazon. A metal beam is a bit slipperier, but that’s easy to address as well – surf wax, etc.

Fixed fortifications are a monument to the stupidity of man.

It’s just sitting there. It’s going to be trivial to defeat.

    @Cacti:

If Clinton is anything at all it is EXTREMELY cautious and thorough when it comes to this sort of thing. I think there is zero chance she is just doing the GOP thing of flinging shit at the wall to see what sticks. She must know something and is pretty damn sure about it. That doesn’t go to her motives but she definitely knows something.

As to why now? I’m guessing that Clinton is fresh out of fucks to give when it comes to being polite about Russian meddling in our elections and figures at this point there is really really no reason to keep the gloves on.

@Duane: Saw your reply. I am aware of many of the schemes/tactics (but not all) that folks use to knock people off voter roles. But it is because I live in St Louis that I was curious about the specifics of your situation. Voter roll management can happen at either the state or county level & I haven’t experienced anything like what you are describing where I live.

Sadly, I think we are moving to a time/place where in a lot of states you’ll just have to regularly check each election to see if you are registered to vote prior to the voter registration deadlines. Which, obviously, would be a burden falling the hardest on lower income/POC/ESL folks.

@J R in WV: I’m also giving a regular small monthly donation to PP & the ACLU. I’m also doing Fair Fight 2020, Vote Riders, EarthJustice, and a couple folks who I got to know working on their near miss state lege campaigns in 2018 who are back in it for 2020. I feel blessed to be able to fit this into my budget. I know a lot of folks who don’t have the flexibility.

In all honesty, if you’d asked me about doing recurring monthly donations before Trump became Prez I would have probably argued against them & instead for making discretionary donations for specific reasons at specified times. Now my perspective is that the fight for a better more just & equitable world is an ongoing fight not particularly tied, say, to election cycles and there are folks making calls, knocking doors, registering voters, filing lawsuits, etc… all the time & small ongoing contributions to groups doing this important work make that possible.

Anyways that’s my thinking on how to play a small role in making our world a better place & put it on autopilot.
