    Maybe that’s next. Though it’s pretty common for wives of that era to cook what their husbands preferred. That’s why my German-Irish grandmother had to learn to cook Italian food.

    @trollhattan: Haha! She will have some great memories of this event, and possibly more in the future.

    My youngest was in HS and was one of the featured performers at the Dec 2000 New Year’s Eve party on the Hornet. The band was Les Brown, she performed in a group of swing dancers, all teens, and as a solo tap dancer. During the rehearsal Les Brown was there to watch, and his son led the band.
    We came in a little early, ok a lot early, to pick her up at the end and got to see a lot of the dance party. She has some really super memories of performing with various Big Bands, or their remnants. There was a 40s style party every quarter on the Hornet and everyone came in period clothing or their uniforms. The guy at the door was a marine with one eye, a cane, and more fruit salad on his chest than I’ve seen on anyone other than Idi Amin. I seem to remember the Glenn Miller Band playing at one of the parties.

    It’s been a heck of a week, and it’s only Tuesday. Sunday, the elevator in my building goes out. “Hey dmsilev, you speak fluent Electrician, can you deal with this?”. Sigh. Call elevator company, talk with tech. He thinks it’s the motor. Monday, two elevator techs arrive w/ replacement motor. Additional tests are made; motor is fine. It’s the power coming in, and that’s the city’s problem (municipal power). Call city, explain to operator that while the single-phase transformer providing power for most of the building is fine, the three-phase running the elevator has one bad phase. Power tech comes out. Verifies that yes, one leg drops way down in voltage as soon as any load is put on it. Calls for “underground” crew to look at transformer. Two more trucks arrive, manhole is opened. “We’ll have to pump out that standing water, and do it now before the transformer explodes”. One more truck, with pump, shows up. It is now Monday evening. “We’ve gotten the water out; looks like there’s corrosion and we need to replace the transformer. That means cutting off power to the whole block, including the traffic light, so we’ll wait until tomorrow.”

    Today: Transformer swapped. No explosions rocked the neighborhood. Tomorrow, elevator guys come back out to check that the stupid thing still works, and then, finally, my neighbors with the limited mobility can, you know, actually get out and about.

    Is it Friday yet? Can I just jump straight to Friday?

    At least the local market had ice cream on sale this week so I have a plentiful supply of junk food on hand.

    Possibly an urban legend, but a NYC crew was once called out for a transformer fault, to find that a restaurant had been emptying its used grease and oil into what looked like a sewer drain. The transformer was nearly submerged in rancid fat.
