Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Insiders who complain to politico: please report to the white house office of shut the fuck up.

Shallow, uninformed, and lacking identity

When do we start airlifting the women and children out of Texas?

I did not have this on my fuck 2022 bingo card.

Sadly, there is no cure for stupid.

I’m pretty sure there’s only one Jack Smith.

Just because you believe it, that doesn’t make it true.

Accused of treason; bitches about the ratings. I am in awe.

They traffic in fear. it is their only currency. if we are fearful, they are winning.

Let us savor the impending downfall of lawless scoundrels who richly deserve the trouble barreling their way.

Bark louder, little dog.

It’s the corruption, stupid.

Republicans are radicals, not conservatives.

If you’re pissed about Biden’s speech, he was talking about you.

If senate republicans had any shame, they’d die of it.

When do the post office & the dmv weigh in on the wuhan virus?

A sufficient plurality of insane, greedy people can tank any democratic system ever devised, apparently.

I see no possible difficulties whatsoever with this fool-proof plan.

The republican caucus is already covering themselves with something, and it’s not glory.

When I decide to be condescending, you won’t have to dream up a fantasy about it.

“Everybody’s entitled to be an idiot.”

Seems like a complicated subject, have you tried yelling at it?

The poor and middle-class pay taxes, the rich pay accountants, the wealthy pay politicians.

Second rate reporter says what?

Are they working under the assumption there are no Republicans on this committee, sitting in on the hearings?

And why are they not in handcuffs?

Contemplate this and other profound thoughts in this open thread.

They’re not in cuffs because it’s an attention-getting stunt, and that would just make it worse.

They’re like little kids throwing a tantrum. Trump’s presidency is a tantrum. His election was a tantrum by his supporters. It is the Age of Tantrum.

The only silver lining is, a lot of them will be dying off soon. My condolences to their families.

We don’t negotiate with terrorists and neither should Adam Schiff. Either they leave their phones with police, remove themselves with their tails between their legs and have anything recorded on the phones removed, or they can be held in contempt of Congress, thrown in jail and have their phones confiscated anyway.

This development is a corollary to the old saw about lawyer courtroom tactics:

If you have the facts on your side, pound the facts. If you have the law on your side, pound the law. If you have neither on your side, pound the table.”

Also, I doubt the democrats on the investigating committees will be anywhere remotely as easily intimidated as were the local Florida election officials by the “Brooks Brothers rioters”.

When will we call it what it is – a treasonous coup. These people know exactly what they are doing and why they are doing it. We cannot solve the problem until we accurately call it exactly what it is and handle it accordingly. The mass lawlessness accepted from the governmental class (white males) is truly astonishing. After years of claiming to be about the Bible and the Constitution, we can now clearly see that what really motivates them is remaining in power and superior to non-white people. “Democracy” is no longer palatable when white people are in the majority. Let’s quit pretending a thing is not a thing. Russia is the perfect partner for these folks because Russians have white skin.

This is a Brooks Brothers riot.
    1) they are trying to interrupt and stall the hearings in order to force Schiff and the Democrats into shutting the hearings down altogether.
    2) they are trying to present themselves as “heroes” to the wingnut Fox Not-News fanbase

they don’t care about the reality of what a closed hearing is about. they don’t care that they’re violating a high-security section of Congress that’s not supposed to have smartphones or cameras (some of the GOP geniuses are getting caught live-tweeting from the SCIF and are blaming their staffers for such illegal acts).

I swear to God, the only sane response to this would be to arrest every single GOP congresscritter involved in this stunt for security violations. At the very least, have Pelosi revoke any Top Secret clearances they have.

    Meanwhile, via WaPo:

    Oct. 23, 2019 at 11:23 a.m. EDT
NEW YORK — President Trump’s private attorney said Wednesday that the president could not be investigated or prosecuted as long as he is in the White House, even for shooting someone in the middle of Fifth Avenue.

The claim of “temporary presidential immunity” from Trump’s private attorney William S. Consovoy came in court in response to a judge’s question that invoked the president’s own hypothetical scenario. As a candidate in 2016, Trump said his support was so strong he could “stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoot somebody” and not “lose any voters.”

The president’s lawyer was asking the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 2nd Circuit to block a subpoena for Trump’s private financial records from New York prosecutors investigating hush-money payments made before the 2016 election. The judges seemed skeptical of the president’s sweeping claims of immunity not just from prosecution, but also from investigation.

Ukraine is going to bring down all the Republicans. Natasha Bertrand finds some more including, of fucking course, Devin Nunes.

Kashyap Patel, a longtime Nunes staffer who joined the White House in February, was so involved in the issue that at one point Trump thought he was in charge of Ukraine policy for the National Security Council, according to congressional testimony by Fiona Hill, the former senior director for European and Russian Affairs whose portfolio included Ukraine.

When Democrats had their gun control sit-in last term, the Republicans handled it by letting them do it and punishing no one. Like it or not, the whole thing fizzled after that. Now wondering– there was the cell phone “leak” last night of the Ambassador’s statements. There was speculation about how it happened and the motives. Now I’m wondering if it wasn’t actually done maliciously. There was one suggestion that if all the Reps. got copies, the copies may have been made by a staff member on the side. I’m mentally linking this cell phone stunt today with that leak from the previous hearing, i.e. as giving an excuse for today’s disruption. It might mean some pre-planning, or might just be taking advantage of a perceived opening to spread some chaos. Or am I overthinking this?
