Miss Bianca
I laughed my ass off when I saw that yesterday. Chonky Kitty just ain’t havin’ it!
Yutsano
She’s obviously building up her left paw to enact swift and mighty justice upon all who have wronged her. That and hello it’s in WATER people!
raven
BJ, come for the politics stay for the fat cats.
Betty Cracker
@Yutsano: I guess they make them walk in the water so they won’t lay down? Poor kitty.

@Betty Cracker: It takes the weight off their legs to have them in a partial float. Source: local vet has a whole therapy wing.

@Betty Cracker: I read somewhere that the water, once she gets sort of used to it, will be chest deep. That both supports the chonk and adds resistance to the exercise.
ETA: Heh, see above
Yutsano
@Betty Cracker: @chris: I mean I do aquatherapy myself but I’m not a cat. I happen to love water and honestly working on a treadmill under water is trippy and fun. Maybe it’s her first session and she just wasn’t even close to used to it yet.

The only thing I’m hearing Cinderblock say is, “I am going to kill you, human.”
germy
I don’t know.
I’m usually the one to find cats a rich source of humor, but I find this sad.
Cat didn’t get this fat on her own. She was overfed by a human, probably high-starch, low-protein food inappropriate for a cat.
So now she’s dangerously obese and is being tortured, forced to march in a shallow pool.
I hope she gets healthy, and I’d like to see a video of the idiot who overfed her. Perhaps in a dunk tank.
sukabi
Once Cinderblock gets svelte someone better change her name.
So now we know where drumpf got his “windmills kill birds” …and it’s ALWAYS about Russia with him.

Speaking of dangers to birds, does anyone know whether reflective metal roofs cause harm to them? My partner wants to get a metal roof so the roof won’t need raking in the winter. (We rake snow off the edge of the asphalt shingle roof to prevent ice dams.) We were thinking of gavalune (which is not painted with a color). Thinking if it reflected clouds and sky colors that might be interesting.
Cat question: since snow sometimes slides off a metal roof all at once (my friend got buried once), I began to wonder about possible danger to any cats walking around the foundation edge, as they do in the winter to stay out of drifts.
Barbara
@Aleta: I would be more worried about icicles (known to be risky) but you should definitely try to keep your roof clear.
Major Major Major Major
Haha I saw all that! There was also a mini-pile-on by people accusing the whole thing of being fatphobic fat-shaming, which is ridiculous, but you can find all types on Twitter.

Fascinating that the turbines vs birds thing that Trump is obsessed with also came from Russia. I’ve thought about Pelosi’s “all roads lead to Russia” comment a lot. I assume she knows many facts investigators found that haven’t been made public. And she chose to caption the iconic photo of her confrontation with Trump with that statement. Hmmm.
Steve in the ATL
Speaking of which, the other day I caught about 15 minutes of an episode of “Mork and Mindy”. My god, was that show bad!
And now back to fat cat discussions.
OzarkHillbilly
@Aleta: They put what I call “snow dams” 1 to 2 feet up from the edge of a metal roof specifically to keep it from all sliding off at once (which can do lots of damage to a house) As far as I know metal roofs have no deleterious effects on birds.
Kelly
@Aleta: Our barn when I was growing up had a plain galvanized steel roof and I didn’t see any birds crashing into it. The shiney weathers away in a few years. You may want it installed with a small air gap between the metal and the structure to prevent ice dams.
germy
Hmm…
OzarkHillbilly
@germy: Not necessarily. A friend of mine had a cat that was as big and round as a basketball. IIRC it had thyroid problems.
OzarkHillbilly
@Betty Cracker: Wind turbines are known to kill birds and bats. There are a number of studies underway to reduce the numbers killed.
Sab
@Cheryl Rofer: I just showed this to my Shadow as an object lesson on gluttony. Being a cat, she couldn’t see it, but she sure could hear the feline outrage. She shares it.
Kelly
@Betty Cracker: Windows kill many times more birds than wind turbines. Of course there are many more windows than wind turbines.
zhena gogolia
@OzarkHillbilly:
We had three cats, two sisters and a brother. They all got the same food. The brother was obese but the sisters weren’t. (Not as obese as Cinderblock, but still.)
I think people are just loving on Cinderblock and hoping she can lose some weight. She’s very cute and such a cat in her attitude.
Sister Golden Bear
@Betty Cracker: IIRC, Trump’s wind turbine obsession started after a plan to build a wind farm offshore near one of his golf courses in Scotland, which he thinks would ruin the view.

I still have a massive crush on chonky Mr. B. but I hope that this poor unhappy queen tubby gets into a fitter, trimmer, happier state.

@Mary G: I wonder that all the time. Don’t they have anything to do? Doesn’t Trump have a job?
Or as my unsympathetic mother used to say, that should be the worst thing that ever happens to them.

@germy:
Name’s not Hunter, so it’s cool.

Betty Cracker
@OzarkHillbilly: Yeah, but if Trump gave a shit about birds, he’d show other signs of it, such as not putting oil lobbyists in charge of the EPA or maybe encouraging people to keep their cats indoors. It’s about propping up fossil fuels, IMO, and maybe a grudge about the view at his stupid resort, as someone mentioned upthread.

I’m reading Graham Moore’s The Last Days of Night, the novel that’s the basis for the Current Wars movie I’m seeing ads for. It’s about the legal battle between Edison and Westinghouse over the future of electricity with Tesla thrown in for good measure. I want you to know that Tesla is one weird dude. When he first began working for Westinghouse, he was invited to dinner at Westinghouse’s home. As they were all shaking hands, one of Mrs. Westinghouse’s hairs got on Tesla’s sleeve and he fled the house, never to come back.

We had a rescue cat, was tiny when Wife pulled her out of a bramble patch, Vet told us she was 6 month old and tiny from lack of food. She wound up near 20 pounds and spherical. We put her on a part-pumpkin diet so she would still feel full on a restricted diet.
She’s about 14 pounds now, named Punkin for being rounder in her youth. We feed her in the bathroom, all alone and don’t let her out until all the other critters’ food is eaten or picked up. Black and dark brown tortie, but very affectionate.

@Amir Khalid: before—it wasn’t THAT bad! Mork fell in with a group of white supremacists, but Mindy was able to resolve it in between commercial breaks. She revealed that her her grandmother came over from Warsaw when Mork went out to get a Polish six-pack—“four beers!”
Still better than “Mrs. Doubtfire” though.

Jim, Foolish Literalist
@Steve in the ATL: so many of those old shows don’t hold up– I caught a rerun of LA Law last year and after five minutes I was thinking “I used to watch this shit, every week”. I will say for latter day Mork and Mindy, Jonathan Winters was fucking brilliant, but I’m not gonna look for any of those on youtube so the memory will remain.
a couple of weeks ago, I looked up Phil Hartman’s legendary “Reagan is secretly a brilliant mastermind!” sketch (for a discussion here), and damn me if, true to SNL form, it din’t go on a minute too long and lean too heavily on a then popular cast member doing an impression (Carvey as Jimmy Stewart)

@germy: more relevant: Amazon web services was awarded a big DOD data contract. Trump complained about it, they re-competed it, and surprise! AWS did not win. Since that is owned by Bezos, who also owns the WAPO.

@OzarkHillbilly: You know the biggest killer of birds—cats. About 4 billion a year (https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.usatoday.com/amp/1873871). Surprised no ones mentioned it considering the topic of the thread. Though I think the chonky ones do less of the murdering since they aren’t in prime physical condition. But, hey, unlike wind turbines at least cats don’t cause cancer, right?
PS Upon rereading my comment I want to make clear I am passing no moral judgement on cats being cats.

Many things in mass popular culture sucked in the 70s (which actually started on August 9, 1974) – network TV, prog rock, haircuts, fashions, brown and orange as a popular color combination (they didn’t get rid of that in the Oakland airport jetways until many years afterwards). I spent those years keeping my head down and staying out of mass popcult.

Question: I know the Trump campaign owes money to a lot of municipalities where he’s held rallies. What do we know about how other candidates in this year or the past handle these bills?
Marcopolo
@sukabi: Also in regards to this I swear I read a story that birds that were tagged with these kinds of transmitters were being caught in Iran (though I guess it could have been another country) because they thought the tracking devices were really a plot by another country to spy on them.
If I recall, this became apparent when the researchers saw that the birds gps locations had become fixed instead of continuing on the migratory route.

@Another Scott: I just checked and 2020 Obamacare price previews are available on Healthcare.gov. The premium for our Kaiser Bronze HSA will almost double to $6.49. Yes, that’s around the price of a modest lunch.

@Dorothy A. Winsor: Assume you are referencing this story (https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.businessinsider.com/trump-campaign-racked-up-1-million-unpaid-bills-us-cities-2019-10)? And using my phone so sorry about the naked links.
I think it is: 1) the consistency with which his campaign has shirked paying combined with 2) the size (and thus greater expense) of his events then multiplied by 3) the sheer number of rallies he is doing.
But here is another article noting BS also had unpaid bills as did KH.

OT: My parents are outside of the evac zones in California but they’re about 20 miles away and expected to lose power for two days. We’re 30 away and expected to maintain power, so they’re coming to stay with us for the next couple days.
We’re also opening our house to our Santa Rosa friends that might need it. My 5yo daughter is excited – she thinks it’s going to be great to have all her favorite people here “camping out”.
The kids simultaneously make everyone calm down and add some stress, because you cant talk about potential disaster in front of them.

@Marcopolo: Interesting. I suspect Trump’s history of not paying contractors etc makes this feel more salient for him.

So yesterday about a million Chileans took to the street to protest their government.
Chile has a population of ~17.5M. If we had that kind of turnout in DC it would be ~19M protesters. So wow.
Today the Chilean president fired his entire cabinet.
Not sure how that necessarily meets the protesters demands. Anyone want to take any bets on whether/when the president resigns?

Reuters – FB takes down PAC ad saying Linsey Graham voted for the Green New Deal:
FB’s trying to be too clever by half here. PAC ads are clearly political speech, and they’re clearly willing to stifle it. Breitbarf is clearly a FWNJ trolling outfit.
I don’t know the best way to draw the lines, but the First Amendment isn’t a suicide pact. When FB collects information on just about everyone on the planet (even those who don’t have accounts) and allows companies to tailor ads to everyone, it’s not just being a publishing platform. They’re enabling propaganda and worse.
Grrr….

Quick kitten update:
Maysie is definitely a Max groupie.
Unfortunately, I didn’t have my phone handy this morning when Loki climbed my husband trying to get to the ceiling fan’s pull cord.
Both kittens are warming up toward the seafood-based cat foods preferred by the older cats. Rotisserie chicken is still their #1 favorite food. They also come running when the treats come out, but they just play with any treats tossed their way.
Good photos and vids are harder to come by now that they have the run of the house. To make matters worse, Pixel has developed an ear infection, and a lot of time has been spent managing an extra-cranky curmudgeon. I’m trying to assemble an email to TaMara before I have to take a deep dive into a presentation I’m scheduled to do in a couple of weeks.

@germy:
Up until just a few years ago, even good veterinarians were telling owners with fat cats to feed dry, “weight control” kibble. Problem is, it had a ton of starches, cereals, and fiber that some cats literally could not tolerate.
We now known that cats, being obligate carnivores, need less than 5% carbs, and a ton of water, fat and protein in their diets. You can still over feed them, of course, but in general, they stay pretty slim and healthy on a wet diet because it also satiates them better than dry. I strongly suspect that like humans, diet can change gut microbiomes in animals and cause them to gain or lose weight, depending on what bacteria we’re feeding.
About 10 years ago, I adopted my best friend’s older cat when she started doing travel nursing and couldn’t keep him with her on the road. When I first got him he weighed 23 lbs and literally his fat belly hit the floor and almost stopped his paws from reaching it if he sat up. He was only eating 1/2 cup a day of prescription weight loss food she was getting from her vet. He was an indoor/outdoor kitty, did a lot of roaming all over her property, so he wasn’t inactive. I did some research back then and came upon this idea that cats were developing insulin resistance from so many carbs in their diet, (including some of the fibers being put into weight loss kibble, that they actually seemed to be able to digest and turn into calories). I researched how to transition them to hi-pro/fat wet food safely (you have to go slow or you’ll kill their liver). After about 6 months he was down to 14 lbs and he pretty much stayed there give or take 2 lbs the rest of his life. (He really could have uses some post weight loss plastic surgery for that flapping belly, though lolol).
I’m definitely seeing the messaging from vets now about wet/hi-pro diets, which is good. But I own four cats and lemme tell ya, feeding them canned food BID is expensive and can be a pain in the ass (if you need to go away for the weekend, for example). I can imagine some fixed/low income person thinking they’re doing the right thing just buying giant, cheap bags of Meow Mix and dumping it into a bowl so the cat grazes all day–which is actually normal for them–but because it’s chock full of crappy carbs it turns them into a Metabolic Syndrome Chonk cat.

@Ella in New Mexico: Thanks for this.
I imagine that in 50 years people will look back on how little we know about eating and metabolism and all the rest and recoil in horror, much as we do about stories from the Civil War about amputations and people dying from infections…
Cheers,
