Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires republicans to act in good faith.

šŸŽ¶ Those boots were made for mockin’ šŸŽµ

You cannot shame the shameless.

Let there be snark.

My years-long effort to drive family and friends away has really paid off this year.

Reality always lies in wait for … Democrats.

Peak wingnut was a lie.

ā€œEverybody’s entitled to be an idiot.ā€

I didn’t have alien invasion on my 2023 BINGO card.

I’ve spoken to my cat about this, but it doesn’t seem to do any good.

The cruelty is the point; the law be damned.

So it was an October Surprise A Day, like an Advent calendar but for crime.

No offense, but this thread hasn’t been about you for quite a while.

Consistently wrong since 2002

Wow, I can’t imagine what it was like to comment in morse code.

Let’s finish the job.

It’s the corruption, stupid.

Republicans are the party of chaos and catastrophe.

It’s always darkest before the other shoe drops.

rich, arrogant assholes who equate luck with genius

Russian mouthpiece, go fuck yourself.

Whatever happens next week, the fight doesn’t end.

Impeachment Inquiry Open Thread: The Way We Live Now

This post is in: Impeachment Inquiry, Open Threads, All Too Normal, Seriously

FacebookTweetEmail

The House is taking a procedural vote ahead of the impeachment inquiry rules resolution.

The floor was about half full even before they called the vote, which never happens. The gallery is packed. The pre-writes are filed. Somewhere on the Capitol grounds, a squirrel prances by.

— Matt Fuller (@MEPFuller) October 31, 2019

I thought this Kellyanne Conway clip saying Democrats "don't have the votes" for the impeachment inquiry must have been from a few weeks ago. But, nope, it was just this morning! https://t.co/ISVNz1bybc https://t.co/pZjShJuXDN

— Nate Silver (@NateSilver538) October 31, 2019

It passed 232-196.

— ?? Scarin' Tumulty ?? (@ktumulty) October 31, 2019

Because I’m old, my current earworm is Simon & Garfunkel’s Silent Night/7 O’clock News…

BREAKING: House has passed impeachment resolution, setting stage for televised hearings and ultimate impeachment vote. A big day and a big development. https://t.co/S8W2sDI9gj

— Greg Miller (@gregpmiller) October 31, 2019

Hey, @GOPLeader!

The impeachment inquiries against Nixon and Clinton also began with private hearings behind closed doors, so we’re going to be totally fine with this.

Sincerely,
Historians https://t.co/keYs7kAHCO

— Kevin M. Kruse (@KevinMKruse) October 31, 2019

"I'm increasingly worried that President Trump will want to shut down the government again because of impeachment … He always likes to create diversions. I hope and pray he won't want to cause another government shutdown because it might be a diversion"https://t.co/R3QOs3cWc7

— Burgess Everett (@burgessev) October 29, 2019

Question: If this was true and democrats DID want to impeach the Republican president right from the very first day, then WHY did Republicans elect a guy who basically dares them to do so pretty much every day?

Seems like you're kinda stupid, doesn't it? https://t.co/ydgCp44EtK

— Stonekettle (@Stonekettle) October 30, 2019

Apparently no one at the NRCC took a second to think whether sending congressional offices suspicious looking packages was a sound idea, which sounds about right.

!! Schumer says he’s ā€œincreasingly worriedā€ President Trump will shut down the government to distract from impeachment

Good for Schumer for getting out ahead on this. That can be his job while the rest of the party–Schatz, Murphy, Hirono, get Lady DiFi out there, too, The Village loves her– talks impeachment

From the immediately preceding post:the way we win is by mobilizing every last base Democrat and any actual uncommitted voter.

You can help flip Texas, by contributing to a proved-effective grassroots organization:
    https://juanitajean.com/ballot-by-mail-program/

Y’all remember that I came to you and flat begged for money two years ago. Y’all paid for ballot by mail, voter registration notices for Democrats who had moved into the county from other counties but not changed their registration, and a whole mess of other grassroots programs that did not require consultants. We had not won a county wide race in 25 years. We won them all in 2018. Every race where we
    fielded a Democrat, we won.

But not too surprising considering how the end of the Fairness Doctrine allowed the rise of FOX and “Free Market” dogma turned the internet into the worst wild west nightmare. Will the country have to implode before we can get regulation that is equal to the challenges of modern communication?

    Roger Moore

    October 31, 2019 at 8:31 pm

    @Mnemosyne:
I’m not sure how much this will help Trump with his taxes. People who have income from multiple states are generally taxed on that income in the state in which it is earned, not on the state they choose as their domicile. For example, professional athletes are taxed based on where their games are played, so they can wind up having to pay taxes in a dozen states. So how this will affect Trump will depend heavily on how his businesses are structured.

Sure, why not? (BBC) A herd of 500 goats has helped save the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library from the California wildfires.

In May, the library hired the goats to clear flammable scrub surrounding the complex as a preventative measure. The goats ate the brush, creating a fire break that slowed the flames and gave firefighters extra time to react.

The goats were hired from a local company – 805 Goats – to clear around 13 acres of land.
Scott Morris started the company last November and charges around $1,000 (Ā£771) per acre of land.
As California continues to have more wildfires, Mr Morris says he will need to double his herd to meet demand.

OT: I don’t really understand why Katie Hill is being forced to resign. I understand that she had “a relationship” with a staffer, but that in and of itself doesn’t seem necessarily resignation material to me (unless there are allegations of coercion or retaliation when the relationship ended). I can sort of understand not wanting to run for reelection or the party preferring someone without the baggage running to hold the seat in 2020, but why is she resigning? She we assume there’s more to the story?

Right now, it seems to me that it’s because there were nude photos and she’s a woman. Neither of which is a crime (although the non-consensual publication of the photos IS a crime).

Trump filed to change residency from NY to FL. Not sure he realizes that won’t stop the NY AG from investigating all of the crimes he committed in NY.

I am not a lawyer, or a Floridian, but I live in a state top-heavy with migrant snowbirds. Lots of my dual-loyalty neighbors declare themselves officially FL residents because the Sunshine State has a relatively low tax rate — especially for senior citizens.

I seem to recall Florida is also notoriously generous to bankrupts; if you can stand the ignominy, Florida’s ‘homestead rules’ gives you a much more generous ‘personal property’ exemption than stricter states like NY or MA. Bigger house, nicer / multiple vehicles, ‘personal’ jewelry, etc.

(I also seem to recall Florida divorce laws are much more favorable to the wealthier partner, but that’s another story… )

I don’t have a problem with her resigning for sleeping with a subordinate; I think not sleeping with subordinates is a good ethical line to keep. I just find it hard to keep up with what society decides is not acceptable. And I have a (hopefully incorrect) suspicion that if we were talking about Congressman Ken Hill, we wouldn’t be talking about his resignation.

It’s because her asshole ex gave 700 illegal nude photos of her to right wing websites, and there’s absolutely no way to stop them from publishing short of resignation. In short, it was blackmail and extortion.

    @trollhattan:

I’ve seen some people saying there are no rules about having relationships with staffers during a campaign if you’re not actually in the House yet. So you can question her ethics, I suppose, but she didn’t do anything wrong even by House rules.

Blackmailing by the ex is unforgivable and hopefully brings charges on his head from the state. Would she have resigned lacking that? No idea, perhaps. I’m not in her district, not even close.

From an HR perspective an affair with an underling is verboten. Period. Maybe just House censure lacking the other, but no way to begin your political career. Simply dumb, ill-informed, wrong. No defense.
