Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

The most dangerous place for a black man in America is in a white man’s imagination.

When do we start airlifting the women and children out of Texas?

Disagreements are healthy; personal attacks are not.

Anyone who bans teaching American history has no right to shape America’s future.

Thanks to your bullshit, we are now under siege.

This has so much WTF written all over it that it is hard to comprehend.

Take hopelessness and turn it into resilience.

Welcome to day five of every-bit-as-bad-as-you-thought-it-would-be.

“But what about the lurkers?”

How any woman could possibly vote for this smug smarmy piece of misogynistic crap is beyond understanding.

Whoever he was, that guy was nuts.

People are complicated. Love is not.

I really should read my own blog.

Incompetence, fear, or corruption? why not all three?

A democracy can’t function when people can’t distinguish facts from lies.

These are not very smart people, and things got out of hand.

Marge, god is saying you’re stupid.

Polls are now a reliable indicator of what corporate Republicans want us to think.

Giving up is unforgivable.

Happy news from Atlanta. I know Pres. Carter says he’s ready, but I have to admit, I am not. Speedy recovery.

Still testing out the embed feature – this is ABCNews.  Let me know in the comments if there are any issues. I’ve put it below the fold because I have to run out and if it’s autoplaying or something, I won’t be able to address it until I return.

Mid-morning open thread

ETA: Hey everyone it’s autoplaying for – is it autoplaying, or doing the short half-second preview loop? That’s what I’m getting. That’s not really autoplay, it’s just a dynamic preview.

Also, if it is fully autoplaying, tell us what you’re using to view it.  Also, is the site running super slow for anyone else?

Thanks. Running out now…

Meanwhile over in the Roger Stone trial, Rick Gates just confirmed candidate Trump, Manafort, Bannon had advance knowledge of wikileaks releases in 2016 — which, you know, was one of the first questions in this whole investigation.— Molly McKew (@MollyMcKew) November 12, 2019

BREAKING: Rick Gates just testified that the Trump campaign had no knowledge of the Wikileaks releases and that's why they were in contact with Roger Stone (as Stone has always maintained) This case continues to be devastating to the Russia truthers— Jack Posobiec ?? (@JackPosobiec) November 12, 2019

Was it always like this? Or did it begin with Karl Rove’s dismissal of the “reality-based community” ??

Blatant lies, and the people who believe the lies are anxious to vote for president.

It’s sad to face the prospect of losing an elder, especially a national treasure like President Carter. The world would have been a much better place if Carterism rather than Reaganism had taken root in the early 1980s. Carter may not have been the most effective president, but he was a good human being, and that matters, as our current political situation underscores, italicizes and renders in bold font.

My husband and I are at the age now when our family elders are showing their frailty, and that really sucks. We’ve each lost a parent, and I lost both grandmothers over the five or so years. As sad as that is, at least it’s not unexpected.

The universe threw a curve ball at our family late last month, and now we’re losing one of my husband’s brothers, a fantastically nice guy who’s in his mid-50s. Totally out of the blue, so we’re all feeling blindsided and trying to help his mom get through this horror show.

    (not) So much winning…..

Donald Trump’s company is to pay the Scottish Government £225,000 to cover its legal bills after the US president’s firm was defeated in a long-running and acrimonious court battle over a windfarm development near his inaugural Scottish golf resort…

Trump International Golf Club Scotland’s latest accounts, published last month by Companies House, show that it posted annual losses of £1.07m in 2018, marking the seventh consecutive year it had failed to turn a profit. Its cumulative losses total more than £9.4m, and it is reliant on interest free loans from Mr Trump worth £40.6m.

Really? I’m with the “ineffective nice guy” any day of the week….

What he’s most proud of, though, is that he didn’t fire a single shot. Didn’t kill a single person. Didn’t lead his country into a war – legal or illegal. “We kept our country at peace. We never went to war. We never dropped a bomb. We never fired a bullet. But still we achieved our international goals. We brought peace to other people, including Egypt and Israel. We normalised relations with China, which had been non-existent for 30-something years. We brought peace between US and most of the countries in Latin America because of the Panama Canal Treaty. We formed a working relationship with the Soviet Union.”

@Mike in DC: I raise for Guide Dogs, and every now and then one of our clients will have their dog attacked like this. The dog does not recover in a way that renders it still usable as a service animal, the losses on the resources put into raising that dog to be a successful guide alone are well north of 50k. I’d like to see owners of the attacking dog hit with the full costs of that, in the form of an absolutely non-dischargeable debt.

There are no bad dogs (really) but there are a shitload of bad owners and we really need to start hitting those folks with the costs of their failure to raise a well-behaved animal.

    @Betty Cracker:

It’s sad to face the prospect of losing an elder, especially a national treasure like President Carter. The world would have been a much better place if Carterism rather than Reaganism had taken root in the early 1980s.

The bitter irony is that had Gerald Ford managed to win the squeaker election of 1976, it would likely have been a solidly progressive epoch rather than a reactionary conservative one that would have taken solid root after the election of 1980 – because the same forbiddingly difficult economic and geopolitical problems which sunk Carter’s chances of success would have unavoidably fallen on Ford’s head instead – and the popular will for change would have turned in the other direction with President Edward Kennedy (or some other progressive nominee) elected President in 1980, and some form of universal health care would have been enacted in the 1980s and SCOTUS would have had three far more progressive-friendly justices instead of O’Connor, Scalia and Kennedy.

I’m not dissing Jimmy Carter here – it’s just a bitter irony that his success in getting elected left him in office during a period of intractable stagflation economic distress that would have likely sunk whomever held the office in 1980, plus the Iran hostage crisis. And frankly, Jimmy Carter’s decision to not send a sufficiently redundant number of helicopters on the hostage rescue mission (in an ill-considered effort to make the optics appear like a rescue mission not a more aggressive military attack) – was what doomed the mission’s chances, sealing Carter’s fate in the 1980 election..

    @Betty Cracker:
My best to you and your family. I know how tough it is to deal with these family health issues.

@Betty Cracker: My sympathy to you, Betty. My wife lost both her older sister and younger brother at 62 and 60. It’s very hard.

In July 1979, Carter gave a televised speech (dubbed the Malaise speech by the media, although he did not use that word) in which he told Americans the truth about the country’s problems. He assumed Americans were adults who wanted to hear the truth and were willing to roll up their sleeves and help solve those problems.

He was wrong. Americans were (and by and large still are) petulant children who wanted a Big Daddy figure to pat them on the head and tell them everything was going to be okay.

That’s how we ended up with that bastard Ronald Reagan.

And on the personal machine (Lenovo laptop Win 7, Fireyfox) without sound to start there was the little preview, with sound the whole vid went, and then at the end shut itself the fuck off, which I consider half a win.
