Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

A dilettante blog from the great progressive state of West Virginia.

This blog will pay for itself.

I’d hate to be the candidate who lost to this guy.

Putting aside our relentless self-interest because the moral imperative is crystal clear.

Since when do we limit our critiques to things we could do better ourselves?

The republican caucus is already covering themselves with something, and it’s not glory.

A Senator Walker would be an insult to the state and the nation.

We still have time to mess this up!

T R E 4 5 O N

I see no possible difficulties whatsoever with this fool-proof plan.

The willow is too close to the house.

Yeah, with this crowd one never knows.

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

The cruelty is the point; the law be damned.

If you tweet it in all caps, that makes it true!

Whoever he was, that guy was nuts.

This fight is for everything.

Republicans are radicals, not conservatives.

An almost top 10,000 blog!

“Everybody’s entitled to be an idiot.”

Only Democrats have agency, apparently.

Eh, that’s media spin. biden’s health is fine and he’s doing a good job.

If senate republicans had any shame, they’d die of it.

Whatever happens next week, the fight doesn’t end.

HEY EVERYONE – NIXON’S FINALLY GOING TO PRISON!! #RogerStone pic.twitter.com/Ic2lidQJmc

A jury has now found Stone guilty of committing crimes to hide the Trump campaign's efforts to optimize the release of emails stolen by Russia.

— emptywheel (@emptywheel) November 15, 2019

The press treated him as a valued off the record source, thus tacitly protecting him from scrutiny for years

Remember when the Nixon Library had to publicly clarify that Stone had no role in the Nixon campaign, because they felt Stone could tarnish Nixon’s reputation.

— Every Chicken Sandwich Is A Policy Failure (@agraybee) November 15, 2019

The real point of the Yovanovitch hearing was underscored by the Stone conviction and Giuliani's pending charge: Trump is surrounded by crooks https://t.co/7JEweA1Lgj

— Jonathan Chait (@jonathanchait) November 15, 2019

Bannon is really the only non-family member of the Trump Campaign's inner circle not in prison.

Dump pardoned those war criminals tonight to send a signal to Sondland and Stone to keep silent and he’ll reward them with a pardon.

I mean Dump could have pardoned the war criminals months ago, but he picked the day Stone is convicted and the day testimony backs Sondland into a corner.

I saw Trump on the local news and he was saying that the evil Democrats are taking away his rights and all Republican rights.  He can’t even engage in a little bit of witness tampering which noted legal expert Donald J. Trump says is a violation of his freedom of speech.

    Poor Donald.

@NotMax: Can’t speak for other commentors, but in its current incarnation, putting together a legible post is a real chore.

I haven’t been as pissed off at a ‘helpful’ tech platform since the unlamented Clippy days, and for much the same reason — the ‘improved’ system wants to help me do all sorts of crap that is of no interest or use, while obstructing me from doing what I know & want to do.

Took me almost two hours of frustration & start-overs to finish this crappy little post, and I already had all the materials at hand.

But at least it’s sorta working, so I can’t afford to bitch (except on empty-ish pre-dawn threads).

Hopefully everything will shake down, eventually…

It’s not giving us our edit function, is it?  And surrounding text with “ol” does not seem to have done anything.

Subaru:  Put the commands tab at the top right (of your commenting box) in Visual (vs. Format) and a color function comes up.  Near the A with an underline.

WRT Roger Stone: I am thinking how I wake up every morning and check if Trump stroked out overnight. Cuz it’s gonna happen one of these days. Stone will be doing that even more fervently. And more slowly. Cannot imagine he will have the access to wifi that he takes for granted (along with his choice of clothing, food, daily activities) …

I hope Amb. Yovanovitch is sleeping more soundly tonight. Hoping her testimony will change the game.

Irony isn’t dead, it’s just on vacation in Italy:

Venice council flooded moments after rejecting climate crisis plan

Veneto’s regional council rejected a plan to combat climate change minutes before its offices on the Grand Canal, in Venice, were flooded, it has emerged as the city continues to battle high water levels.

Venice has been hit by recurrent flooding since Tuesday, with 70% of the lagoon city engulfed on Friday morning as the acqua alta, or high water, level reached 1.54 metres amid heavy downpours.

On Tuesday night, as Veneto councillors were debating the climate emergency in Ferro Fini Palace, Venice experienced its worst flooding since 1966.

Politicians from the regional council’s majority rightwing parties: the League, Brothers of Italy and Forza Italia, rejected amendments to fight the climate crisis in the 2020 budget that were proposed by the centre-left Democratic party.

Sharing pictures of the room as water entered, Andrea Zanoni, the Democratic party’s deputy chairman of the council’s environment committee, wrote on Facebook: “Ironically, the chamber was flooded two minutes after the majority parties rejected our proposals to tackle climate change.”

I’ve had a few times in my life when that hasn’t been the norm, but the few have a lot of years in between. At least I’m not working 60-80 hrs a week any more.

Just an observation, but all this talk about overhearing a cell phone convo is entirely plausible to me, because my neighbor often talks on his phone while walking along the driveway that separates our houses, and I can, (or could, if I wanted to), easily hear whoever he’s talking to. So yeah, DJT prolly wouldn’t have to be screaming into his phone to be recognizably heard. The End.

    @David ??Booooooo?? Koch:

No way.  If Trump was willing to pardon people who took a dive for him, he’d have done it by now.  I’ve heard “Trump will pardon him” a dozen times about coconspirators and it has never happened.  Trump throws people under the bus, he never rescues them.  Personally I think he’s such a mean shit he doesn’t grasp the concept of protecting someone else to protect himself.

The war criminal pardon has been in the works for awhile.  He’s said they should be pardoned before.  It’s consistent with his pardoning pattern making sure that government brutality to non-whites is not a crime, which is consistent with his previous statements and his personal philosophy.  If there is any relation to Stone at all it’s just that Trump is in a bad mood and being an asshole soothes him.

    @satby:

The opinion writer for the Guardian nails it all the way through that article. A large part of the problem is Faux Mews, building an alternate reality based upon evil misinterpretations of the facts in front of our eyes daily. Along with Republicans who no longer believe in American values at all.

The rest is the regular media in the charge of committed corporate stooges  and true-believer fascists — look at Chris Matthews, acting as if Trump is a legitimate politician instead of a petty mob boss hanger on. Matthews is as bad as the worms acting as the faces of Fox News, or nearly so.

He manages to pretend to be an impartial news opinion broadcaster, but when the steel hits the grindstone, he can be counted upon to twist the facts to meet the needs of state fascism, like he did last night. Despicable wurms; like Hannity, Fucker Carlson and all the rest of those ilk the names of which I thankfully do not recall at this time.

ETA:  Comment looks pretty good this morning. Obviously work is going on behind the scenes all the time. These guys are good, regardless of the oddities a large group of users in daily functioning are finding. Note that I use guys as an ungendered term, to include Watergirl and all the other B-J folk who have helped, as well as the development team they found and led on this project.
