Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

A dilettante blog from the great progressive state of West Virginia.

You can’t attract Republican voters. You can only out organize them.

Roe isn’t about choice, it’s about freedom.

Prediction: the GOP will rethink its strategy of boycotting future committees.

We still have time to mess this up!

They’re not red states to be hated; they are voter suppression states to be fixed.

Infrastructure week. at last.

It’s the corruption, stupid.

John Fetterman: Too Manly for Pennsylvania.  Paid for by the Oz for Senator campaign.

Historically it was a little unusual for the president to be an incoherent babbling moron.

Republican obstruction dressed up as bipartisanship. Again.

And we’re all out of bubblegum.

I’m pretty sure there’s only one Jack Smith.

Let’s delete this post and never speak of this again.

Conservatism: there are some people the law protects but does not bind and others who the law binds but does not protect.

Putting aside our relentless self-interest because the moral imperative is crystal clear.

Is it irresponsible to speculate? It is irresponsible not to.

Why did Dr. Oz lose? well, according to the exit polls, it’s because Fetterman won.

Take hopelessness and turn it into resilience.

Americans barely caring about Afghanistan is so last month.

I’d like to think you all would remain faithful to me if i ever tried to have some of you killed.

Hot air and ill-informed banter

I like you, you’re my kind of trouble.

Black Jesus loves a paper trail.

Incredible time capsule here. Also shows how very old (and tiresome) the conservative deficit con is. Buckley's attacking Dukakis on fiscal responsibility at the very time Reagan has predictably exploded the deficit. https://t.co/5H48ZFiCT7

— Chris Hayes (@chrislhayes) November 18, 2019

Per the Washington Post:

The fifth Democratic debate is tonight and is co-hosted by The Washington Post and MSNBC. Here’s what you need to know.

When: Coverage starts at 8 p.m. Eastern time, and the debate will run from 9 to 11 p.m. Eastern time.

Where: It’s being held in Atlanta, at Tyler Perry Studios, and you can watch it on washingtonpost.com or our apps or on MSNBC.

Who: Ten candidates have qualified to be onstage, hitting at least 3 percent in four approved polls or at least 5 percent in two early-state polls, plus bringing in donations from at least 165,000 unique donors…

@Baud:  I don’t have the oomph to watch the debate. Been keeping an eye on impeachment hearings today. Tired of politics. Wonder if others feel like I do.

Anne Laurie, I just put up a site post, but I don’t think it will be any competition for the debate threads.  I figure debate threads will be going up all night, so I figure now is as good a time as any.  Plus, it will give anyone who can’t bear to watch the debates something to read, if they are so inclined.

    @susanna:

Anyone know what a “unique donor” is?

It means a specific person.  So if you give your favorite candidate a monthly donation for a year, that’s 12 donations but only one unique donor.  If you convince 11 friends to donate with you, that’s 12 unique donors.

  22. 22.

    mrmoshpotato

    November 20, 2019 at 8:09 pm

@susanna: Different people.  You and I would be considered 2 unique donors, me donating to a candidate 5 times would not be considered 5 unique donors.

@zhena gogolia: Maloney’s questioning was featured for a couple minutes last night on something my Mike’ster and I were watching.  I said to the Mike’ster that Maloney was the gay one.  I was met by disbelief because a decade ago this would have been “openly gay Representative” Maloney.  The Mike’ster was bombarded by a fussilade of pictures of Maloney , his very handsome and very happy looking husband, their wedding, and their three happy, adopted kids.

It’s deeply moving for a couple old gay guys who grew up with the Joe Mc Carthy hearings being the only place we’d ever heard the word homosexual – the only time we realized we might mot be alone but we were not saved from endless loneliness but instead thrown in with pedophiles and loveless perverts.  And the AIDS era.  Need I  say more?

To watch Maloney’s superb interrogation caused the living room to fill with dust and chopped onions.

    https://www.google.ca/amp/s/www.theglobeandmail.com/amp/arts/music/article-spirit-of-the-west-singer-john-mann-dies-at-57/

A clever lyricist and charismatic showman, Mr. Mann is no doubt best known for his band’s anthem Home for a Rest. The song, from its slow, signature start (“You’ll have to forgive me, I’m not at my best”) to its rollicking chorus (“I’m so sick from the drink; I need home for a rest”) has been sparking sing-alongs and bringing down the house at frosh parties, New Year’s Eve celebrations and weddings since its release in 1990.

But when Mr. Mann revealed his Alzheimer’s diagnosis in 2014 and continued to perform with the support of his band, he became as beloved for his bravery as he was for his musical brilliance.

I’ve just come back from a moving Transgender Day of Remembrance  service at a local church. I have no heart right now to watch either hearings or the debate. I want to fast forward to the day when one of the Democratic candidates is elected President, and I’m becoming deeply agnostic about which one. Just as long as Trump is gone.

@Yarrow: One advantage of living in a place that has elections every year is that I’m sorry in the afterglow of having kicked Republican ass all over the state, which has rejuvenated me quite a bit.

I’m not watching the debates, though; I never do. They always just make me tense, and I’d rather read transcripts afterwards.

@WaterGirl: No, I’ve got 2,112 emails piled up in my box because even though I’ve been unsubscribing like crazy more keep coming. Somebody who’s running for city council in a small town in Iowa?

I went and looked at it, and just ignore that complaint; scratch it off the punch list. I’m the only person with the problem and it’s probably due to cranking up the Chrome zoom to 125%. The site looks fine on the tablet and laptop. Some people were talking about a Google app that might help. I am getting used to it as is.
