Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Only Democrats have agency, apparently.

Since when do we limit our critiques to things we could do better ourselves?

“What are Republicans afraid of?” Everything.

They punch you in the face and then start crying because their fist hurts.

The gop is a fucking disgrace.

Trump’s cabinet: like a magic 8 ball that only gives wrong answers.

I did not have this on my fuck 2025 bingo card.

The lights are all blinking red.

When they say they are pro-life, they do not mean yours.

The press swings at every pitch, we don’t have to.

Imperialist aggressors must be defeated, or the whole world loses.

It’s pointless to bring up problems that can only be solved with a time machine.

This fight is for everything.

It may be funny to you motherfucker, but it’s not funny to me.

Second rate reporter says what?

Speaker Mike Johnson is a vile traitor to the House and the Constitution.

Human rights are not a matter of opinion!

Republicans in disarray!

Black Jesus loves a paper trail.

Nothing worth doing is easy.

Washington Post Catch and Kill, not noticeably better than the Enquirer’s.

It’s a good piece. click on over. but then come back!!

Republicans: “Abortion is murder but you can take a bus to get one.” Easy peasy.

Rupert, come get your orange boy, you petrified old dinosaur turd.

Pre-Debate Open Thread: Not Yet Endorsing, But You Know I Have A Favorite

Warren now has a health care plan, a backup health care plan, and a backup backup health care plan. https://t.co/ETcvwXuPwj

Two years ago, Elizabeth Warren invited a well-known single-payer advocate to a meeting at her home.

Over tea, the senator peppered her guest with questions about universal coverage.

Days later, she called for Medicare for all for the first time.https://t.co/cmpz5wVyqs

— Sarah Kliff (@sarahkliff) November 18, 2019

'She would also seek to add a dental benefit to the Medicare program, by reinterpreting language in the statute that says dental care can be covered only if it is “medically necessary.”'

This is the most significant bit. Can you create a $20-30bn entitlement by executive order? https://t.co/7Ilh5GjSS8

This is one of the oldest Warren plans, pre-dating not just the 2016 Bernie campaign but the 2014 effort to draft her into the race. https://t.co/hjAGIWyP75 https://t.co/vdR7Fw1C7S

— Dave Weigel (@daveweigel) November 19, 2019

The morning after the Nevada Dems dinner, Warren is speaking at the Nevada Partners "Westside Pride" Black Community Summit. She’s starting with a focus on housing: “Safe, decent, affordable housing is a basic human right.” pic.twitter.com/jvKgplgrNt

I was busy all day, haven’t had a chance yet to watch the video of today’s hearing, and now I am reminded there is a debate tonight — I am never going to catch up.

I really like Elizabeth too.  Because I think she’s big on whacking capitalism back to size.  We’re in the predatory phase now.  Capitalism works best when it’s restrained, as in Europe.

I like Kamala Harris as well.  Just drove by the Blue Bee Cidery in Richmond, where she spoke maybe a year ago.  Felt a bit sad that her campaign has not taken off more, because she’s a wonderful and inspiring retail politician.

I am sick of the morons who argue that Warren was a Republican for too long, and that Kamala is a cop.  Immediate sign those are not serious people with whom to converse.  Just move along.

Mainly commenting to say Watergirl is the greatest!!

(I find it amazingly helpful to see the number of current comments when I’m down at the bottom of a post after reading it and she got that done :)

I still like Warren, but after reading more WOC’s reservations about her on race, reading this post about media erasure of Harris, and seeing more of Harris speaking, she my current #1 choice.

Homer trains for whacking day. To give Warren some ideas, doncha know.

I travel a fair amount on business and the disparity between rich and poor areas is staggering; it’s always been a problem, of course, but it is so much worse now.

I’m in a Catch-22. I will vote for any D candidate, so don’t want to get so invested in one that I resent pulling the lever for the person who beats them. But if you don’t go out and work for a candidate you like, they have less chance of winning.

They are all fine. Some would make me happier to vote for than others.

    Thanks for the post.

Warren is still my favorite, though of course, no politician is perfect. I think her approach to health care reform is the right one, but politically risky. Seems like both the Biden-Buttigieg unspecified something to restore and strengthen Obamacare and diehard M4A camps hate it. Goods news is that it has quite a bit of union support. Krugman loves it, so I believe it is economically sound, but not sure Krugman has good feel for politics.

Harris is the only candidate with the guts to say (finally, after waffling) that if we do go for mixed M4A and private insurance system, private insurance has to be regulated enough to be forced to provide equivalent coverage for any comprehensive policy they sell. Which I think is the an absolute requirement for a mixed system to be stable. Harris is my second choice.

So, I think my first and second favorites have the economics and politics for getting in done once in office better on health care than the others. Whether that politics is better for getting elected than the Biden or Bernie approaches, I have no clue.

    @JR:

    the simple answers to M4A are;

    a). It’s a National Security Issue,

b). Mexico will pay for it,

c). What do you mean there is a double standard?

Argh…the next round of the impeachment hearings just started…debate in three hours…argh…

That being said, I’m still firmly w/ Warren. I have made my peace w/ every other D candidate except TG (yes, even BS). Harris is 2, Castro 3, there’s a big jumble in the middle and Yang is the lowest of the acceptable. All that being said, I don’t think anyone polling at 2or 3 percent right now has a chance of winning. Also, I do think there is a serious likelihood we wind up w/ a brokered convention. We will know a hella lot more after the first 4 contests.

So, apparently according to that WaPo “which candidate are you” quiz – as in, “how do you feel about these policy issues?” – Cory Booker is my dream candidate, with Tom Steyer (!!??wtf) second, and Kamala Harris third!

And speaking of Cory Booker – hmm, smart guy, Rhodes scholar, mayor of a big city – how come Pete Buttigieg is getting all the love in that lane? Is there some It Factor that I’m just overlooking?//
