Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

When do we start airlifting the women and children out of Texas?

The truth is, these are not very bright guys, and things got out of hand.

The words do not have to be perfect.

Black Jesus loves a paper trail.

A sufficient plurality of insane, greedy people can tank any democratic system ever devised, apparently.

I see no possible difficulties whatsoever with this fool-proof plan.

Insiders who complain to politico: please report to the white house office of shut the fuck up.

Give the craziest people you know everything they want and hope they don’t ask for more? Great plan.

Take hopelessness and turn it into resilience.

Tick tock motherfuckers!

Imperialist aggressors must be defeated, or the whole world loses.

The next time the wall street journal editorial board speaks the truth will be the first.

Don’t know a ton about Rep. Val Demings because I don’t live in her district, but she’s impressed me during these hearings. Democrats have a pretty weak bench in Florida, so every time I see an impressive politician, I hope they’ll run for governor someday…

    @Gin & Tonic:

    A) I really like the Z7.  It’s considerably smaller and lighter than my old D800, and they’re just getting started with the amazing lenses.

    B) Pixels.  I like to be able to print really big- I have several 24×36 prints of my photos- and more pixels is always better when you want to do that.

    C) I have mostly been shooting with the Z-mount 24-70/4, which for me was a big selling point of the camera.  I love that it’s a lot smaller and lighter than my old 24-70/2.8, and it’s incredibly sharp across the frame.  I do use the FTZ adapter when I have a lens that doesn’t have a Z-series equivalent, or where it doesn’t seem worthwhile to buy a replacement.  Some of the rock art photos in the gallery I posted recently (and have as the link for my name) were taken with my F-mount 300/4 and the FTZ adapter, including some using a 1.7x TC.

I’m not him but if I were pondering the line, it would be Z7 or nothing, because of the sensor.

Pretty much.  And you’re right, it’s not just the pixels- though that was very important to me- it’s also the dynamic range.  At ISO 64, the raw files have an absurd amount of detail, very low noise, and enough dynamic range that you can really squeeze a lot out of them in post.  And it doesn’t hurt that they still have low enough noise at ISO 1600 that they require only a tiny bit of noise reduction, even after some vigorous tweaking of the contrast curve.

I’m sure tomorrow, someone here is going to be hearing from a friend/colleague/relative about how “Nunes and Jordan sure shredded those State Department hacks!!”, and be (possibly honestly) amazed than anyone could think otherwise…

Why We’re Impeaching Our Student Body President Over Trump Jr.

I consider Donald Trump Jr. to be a barren banana stand in the marketplace of ideas. No one would ever mistake him for an intellectual or accomplished individual, so why pay him even close to such?

@Soprano2: I just saw a 1-minute clip of him interrupting Holmes and I find myself reflexively reaching for a bat.

@?BillinGlendaleCA:   Yes.  Val Demings.  I listen more than I watch, and I miss some of the names.

Gonna read the transcript of this hearing today.  It’s incredible to me that you can have this level of testimony and still have people proclaiming the Senate will never convict.

The Republicans have indeed gone to the devil since Watergate.

A lot can change, and come out, between now and a Senate vote, though.

@Jay: Rick Perry is also well into this scandal – sitting high at the table in one of the pictures

I thought it interesting that when Gym Jordan gave his post hearing interview, the only person standing with him was Kevin  McCarthy? Previously, there was a whole gaggle of Republican nodding heads behind him. Their tails are definitely between their legs at the moment.

I was watching on CNN but they switched to coverage of the Bibi indictment so I missed Fiona Hill’s testimony about Lt. Col. Vindman. I understand that she defended him against Republican smears. Can someone fill me in please?

Question for you legal beagles…Any chance Rudy gets charged?  If so, he can’t claim attorney/client privilege since he would likely be charged with a felony, amirite?

@Sloane Ranger: My very rough recollection and paraphrase is that she first said it’s really awkward/unfair to have an individual’s performance review or skills assessment brought up in public, particularly out of context. Second, she said that Lt. Col. Vindman was very good at his job. Third, her one and only reservation about him arose in the context of the politicization of Ukraine dealings, namely that his background and training are in the military arena and that he might not have the temperament or skills to handle a political situation – which by that time it had clearly become. So she was giving Morrison (her replacement) a commentary on Vindman’s – and other staffers’ – strengths and weaknesses, which she correctly said was normal in providing employee info in a handover situation, and one to which she is also subject. She made it clear that Vindman had done nothing wrong and was a valued colleague of highest integrity.

@Sloane Ranger: Mark Meadows but since they both have the same Grey Sponge Bob heads its an easy mistake to make

@Ella in New Mexico: The strand of hair Jordan wears across his forehead makes me physically ill. In addition to a new tie the idiot needs a haircut. I think there’s a barber in the House. I know there’s a mirror.
