The new site has been live for a week! We just received submission 100 through the Site Feedback form. Who knew you guys would actually use the form? I had faith, but I’m not sure anyone else did! LOL
This thread is specifically about any commenting issues that may remain. Have you have experienced any of these issues since Monday?
- Is @nym not consistently showing up when you reply to another commenter?
- After you post a comment, do you have to manually refresh the page or post another comment before your previously posted comment shows up?
- If your comment doesn’t appear right away, where do land after posting your comment?
- After you post a comment, are you taken to the comment you have been posted, or do you sometime bounce to the top?
- Are any of the formatting buttons disappearing?
- Does your edit window close before the 5-minute window has elapsed?
- Have any of your comments shown up after posting, and then disappeared after that?
If you are experiencing any of those things, or any comment-related issues, please speak up in this thread, and supply the following information:
- Since Monday, has it happened consistently, frequently, occasionally, or once in a blue moon?
- Have you noticed any sort of a pattern?
- Does it happen on a particular device or on all of your devices?
- Does it happen only when you use a particular browser, or device/browser combination?
Thanks in advance, everybody!
Update: I should have said this earlier, but… If you are not experiencing any of these issues, please share that in the comments, too!

On Chrome using Windows 10 on a Dell laptop:
– posting a comment takes me back to the top. New comment not shown. Refreshing after ~10 sec solves the issue
– If I use the back button to navigate, the forward button does not return me to where I was
It’s been a week? Just seems like a couple of days, though living in this timeline is exhausting.
The Dangerman
I had a #2 this morning.
As for where I go, I think I go to the bottom of the comments (because I scroll up a few to see if it posted before I refresh).
I also had a #6. Yesterday, IIRC. I might have had a #5 once, but only once, where the editing menu was in text and not icons. Don’t recall when.
Did I make a Yahtsee?
ETA: On a chromebook. Not sure how to find version right now to be honest with you. Long day.
Martin
People keep disagreeing with me. It makes me sad and I was hoping it would stop.
Frequently and consistently.
Yes. I post something and people come to a different conclusion.
Strangely, on all of my devices.
Same, every browser and device. I’ve tried all kinds of combinations and people still disagree with me. I haven’t found any fix so far. It’s highly annoying.
Omnes Omnibus
Some people keep saying really stupid shit.
What? I have an issue with it.
ETA: I mean just check out the comment above mine.
debbie
Nos. 2 through 4 are my issues. There’s no consistency, ie, sometimes I am taken to the top of the page, sometimes to an arbitrary point in the thread. I have to refresh two or three times. But these issues happen every time. I can’t think of a time where I’m returned to what I just posted.
Macbook Pro / Chrome.
Yarrow
Yes. Happens frequently. Windows 10, Chrome. Happened multiple times today. I can refresh several times before my comment shows up.
Usually the top of the page.
Not that I’ve noticed but I’ve seen that other people’s comments have shown up and then disappeared and then reappeared.
Weird commenting thing just happened. I was in Text mode, pasted the next quote I was going to answer, clicked b-quote and it flipped me back to Visual mode. Meh. Leave me where I was, please. I was still on this same comment and hadn’t posted anything. Happened again with next blockquote.
Yarrow
I only post on one device so no idea about different devices.
I think maybe comments show up faster when I post direct from Text mode but not sure.
Yarrow
@Yarrow: I have no ability to edit now.
debbie
@debbie:
Okay, another issue. There was no option to edit my previous post. I wanted to add that I had been returned to OO’s post for some reason. It wasn’t there when I posted and I wonder if I’m being returned to the same relative position on the thread (if that makes sense).
ETA: And yet, when this post posted, my previous post had the editing thing back!
?BillinGlendaleCA
I’ve not had this problem.
Yes.
Top of the post.
It bounces to the top on a consistent basis.
Yes, sometimes I just get ‘text mode’ formatting buttons, sometimes no formatting buttons.
I’ve not noticed this behavior.
No.
Windows 10, Chrome latest version.
ETA: One other thing that is particularly annoying, if I click on the nym of a person whose comment is being replied to, I go to that comment(as it should), HOWEVER the back button doesn’t reliably return me to the first comment.
Martin
@Omnes Omnibus: See! Watergirl, it’s 100% reproducible. Just look at this. This was Safari on MacOS X 10.14. The very next comment disagreed with me.
Is there like a button or a tag I can add? Maybe I need more omegas? Or maybe the magnets crashing into each other?
?BillinGlendaleCA
@Martin:
There’s your problem.
Yarrow
@?BillinGlendaleCA:
Yes. This. Happens all the time and then I get completely lost on the page. Have to go click the title to kind of start over and then scroll down. That’s how I find out I’ve missed comments. I’m skimming to find my place and I think “I haven’t seen that comment” but I’ve read ones before and after it. I think it’s part of the comments appearing and disappearing thing.
p.a.
Generally, my 1st comment in a thread posts as desired. Any further comments I need to refresh to see the post. Generally, not always.
Also, any thought to making ‘text’ the default, at least for non-frontpagers?
Mary G
Ceci n est pas mon nym
#2 for sure, consistently all week on Firefox / Mac OS X. Let me see what happens in detail after I hit the post on this one.
Huh. No issue at all. Posted immediately, with an edit link.
Also I’ve been having the issue that the Edit Comment went away after refreshing, but that seems to have cleared up.
I was struggling with the user interface on how to get outside the blockquote box once you quote something, I finally found out (because somebody told me) that hitting return twice does the trick.
I know a lot of people have struggled with embedding tweets. That’s not something I normally do. When I tried to fix somebody else’s tweet embed earlier today, the post was simply swallowed without comment. Twice.
There are a lot of new toys and I think we’ll all be very happy with them once we learn all the tricks. I think rather than mess further with the user interface, what’s needed is a tutorial page that tells how to do specialized things like embed YouTube and Twitter. Once the dust settles.
?BillinGlendaleCA
@Yarrow: Thanks, I was unsure if my comment was clear.
Yarrow
@p.a.: Or maybe it could remember what your last thing was–Text or Visual–and just keep you there until you manually change it.
Oh, look. Just as I did this, the Text & Visual tabs have disappeared. I’m apparently in Text mode because I see all the coding buttons with words not images. No option to switch back and forth, though.
jeffreyw
Well, let’s see…
cmorenc
Biggest issue for me is the buggy blockquote function – whenever I try to blockquote a passage, I cannot then escape the blockquote enclosure, although it is possible to work around this bug by:
?BillinGlendaleCA
@Yarrow:
I believe it’s supposed to do that.
different-church-lady
I have a what is probably a maddeningly specific thing to report:
* older ipad running 10.3.something, Chrome
* only when replying to annother comment
* the moment I start to type the reply, the whole page scrolls down to where one enters the nym, and I can no longer see the comment entry field.
* scrolling back up doesn’t solve it, it merely scrolls back down again.
Odd, eh?
debbie
@different-church-lady:
That’s happened to me a time or two on my aged iPad Mini.
?BillinGlendaleCA
@cmorenc: Getting out of the blockquote is easy, just hit return twice. The first return will add a line feed to the blockquote, the second will exit the blockquote.
jeffreyw
Pushing “post comment” button took me to the top of the page. Waiting a few seconds and a refresh took me to my newly made comment. Win 10 Chrome
cmorenc
OK – next bug is: how do I turn off auto-format in a comment box? That’s why I inadvertently left a hanging point 3) in my previous post, no matter how hard I tried to delete it in edit. (The same annoying default is in MS-Word in that otherwise *it* insists how your paragraphs and outline points must be formatted, but I’ve figured out how to turn it off in MS-Word).
different-church-lady
@different-church-lady: also on ipad: I don’t get a close box when I want to cancel my comment, and can’t escape without either posting or refreshing the page
Yarrow
@cmorenc: This blockquote issue is a problem for me as well. I generally go to Text mode right away if I’m blockquoting. There I can see the code and can move the cursor around.
@?BillinGlendaleCA: Maybe it’s supposed to but I have never had it do it.
Gin & Tonic
I don’t comment often from my phone, so I’ll try to reproduce this (Safari, iOS 12.) If I try to post a reply to a comment, the pop-up box that I’m used to seeing in Chrome on my desktop steals focus and I can’t scroll down to where the “Post Comment” button should be. This is sporadic, as I’m trying to make it happen now and it won’t
ETA: Actually it did happen. When I try scrolling, I can see that it’s scrolling the stuff behing, meaning the page with all the comments – I get to see about 1/4″ of that above and below the reply box.
?BillinGlendaleCA
@cmorenc: Bullet and numbered lists can be turned off by hitting the bullet or number button to turn them off.
Ex.:
I just hit the number list button to turn it off, no hanging ‘3’.
jeffreyw
@jeffreyw: Replying to my own comment.
ETA no problems!
Ceci n est pas mon nym
@cmorenc: I just mentioned that at #16. I finally found out that if you position the cursor at the end of the blockquote and hit return twice, you get out of it into normal text.
You can also go to the Text tab and type outside the </blockquote> tag, but that seems like kind of a hack.
Yarrow
@?BillinGlendaleCA: That is a bizarre workaround. It worked once for me and once not.
I really wish the default commenting was in the box at the bottom of the page instead of the pop up.
cmorenc
@?BillinGlendaleCA:
Yes, but that’s VERY non-intuitive – as much better as the new interface is in many ways, the blockquote function in the old interface was MUCH easier and more intuitive.
Be nice if there was a quote-reply function that would auto-quote the post you’re replying to. Another forum website I regularly comment in does have this feature, and I can enter the blockquote and edit it down to the relevant passages I’m responding to.
WaterGirl
So awesome when I got back from picking up dinner to see that there are 30 comments saying everything is working perfectly! :-) I am about to eat dinner, but I will check back in a few minutes when I am done.

All the buttons are there, 2 tabs showing. The comments are doing well except for the first one in this thread, the one that took me to the top and needed a wait and a refresh.
ETA Oh Dear! This one top me to the top and needed a refresh.
Ceci n est pas mon nym
@Gin & Tonic: I have exactly this issue in Safari on iPhone. I’ve learned to look for the X on the popup and close it right away, then reply in the main window.
Yarrow
@WaterGirl: Have a good dinner. When you get back to things, is there anything you can do about Republicans being traitors? I think we could all live with commenting issues if that one issue would get addressed.
?BillinGlendaleCA
@cmorenc:
That is what I initially thought during testing, but it works pretty well once you adapt to it.
ETA: What I agree with you on is that the behavior of the blockquote and the bullet and number lists is inconsistent.
ETA2: What might work is have the blockquote button as a toggle like the list buttons are…
however:
two returns end the list, just like blockquote. Blockquote is the one that’s inconsistent.
Mary G
I came here from the last thread and once again the comment box has only the text options and not the visual tab.
ETA: in the edit function, both the visual and text tabs show up.
Another thing that I have thought of but not brought up, I do miss the navigation up and down arrows that only went a short way up or down, and I agree with someone who said in an earlier thread that the nav arrows would be easier to find if they were bolder. I’m gradually getting used to not looking in the bottom right corner, and I’m glad they were moved, because I get notifications there, but if they stood out more I would see them faster. This is a thing that will probably go away after more use, but for now I kind of have to look around for a while.

After you post a comment, do you have to manually refresh the page or post another comment before your previously posted comment shows up?
Sometimes – Seems to happen the more I post on a thread. If I use your refresh button it doesn’t always show up – if I use the browser refresh button it usually works.
If your comment doesn’t appear right away, where do land after posting your comment?
Top of page
After you post a comment, are you taken to the comment you have been posted, or do you sometime bounce to the top?
both – top of page usually when comment doesn’t appear.
Does your edit window close before the 5-minute window has elapsed?
After doing an edit, the edit doesn’t show up & the edit option disappears. Refreshing the page via the browser refresh usually fixes it. Not sure how long the window stays because sometimes I don’t pick up that I need the refresh
When jumping to an earlier comment (via pressing a quoted nym) , the back arrow only takes me back to the original comment the first time I do it within an open thread. Where it goes after that seems random. If I close/open the thread it works again once.
Many thanks for all your work
Ceci n est pas mon nym
@?BillinGlendaleCA: As I said above, there are a number of things that aren’t intuitive, but that’s just because there are so many new toys. There are features we hadn’t imagined we need, but which I suspect we’ll be addicted to soon.
So I suggested that perhaps once we get the major bugs hammered out our IT team can write up a tutorial on all the new features.
The difference between the “COMMENT” link and the down arrow for instance.

On Firefox on Windows 7. I have inconsistent behavior with my posts showing up. Most of the time they do, and I’m taken to them*. Occasionally my comment won’t show up, in which case I wind up at the top of the page. ETA: This is consistent. If my comment shows up, I’m taken to it. If it doesn’t, I always wind up at the top of the page.
*With some error depending on how many embedded tweets there are on the page, since they seem to mess up the positioning. I’m pretty sure this is a browser problem, though, not a site problem.

Blockquote is working fine for me. Hit blockquote, paste text, hit enter twice. If you hit enter only once, it leaves you in the blockquote. If you hit it twice, it ends the quote. You can also try pasting the text, typing your response, and then going back, highlighting the quoted text and hitting the quote button.

Only 20 people reporting commenting problems. That’s not too bad. I’ve made a list of nyms, devices and browsers up top – if you are listed with ?? that means I don’t have enough information about your setup.
I am seeing an awful lot of “Chrome” up there! If you normally use Chrome but have access to another browser and are willing to see if that browser also has issues, that could be very helpful in figuring out what’s happening.
WaterGirl
@NotMax:
There’s nothing to be done about that. That’s what people see when they have social media turned off in their browser (Firefox for example) or in something like Ghostery. With as lean as you run your system, I am not surprised that you would see the issue.

All I can say to that is the extra vertical spacing (both above and below the text) within an FP post’s blockquote boxes appears on the new site and did not evidence the same way on the old one.

Compare the amount of vertical spacing above and below the specific blockquoted text on the front page right now – look at the difference between the display of any tweet in the post just below this one and a post with a non-tweet blockquote further down the front page.

@Ohio Mom:
That happened to me on my iPhone 6 on Monday when someone caught me just as I was walking out the door to say that Germy was able to fully embed tweets. I pulled out my phone as soon as I got to my hair appointment, and the comment box suddenly took up the whole screen. I was able to get out of it by hitting the X that is usually used to go “full screen” while editing. Have you tried that
P.S. What browser?

I have been experiencing commenting issues on my phone, an LG5.
When I leave a comment from my phone using the Chrome browser, I have to refresh to see the comment show up.
I think you said that “Comments” button takes you to the top of the comments section. It takes me all the way to the bottom of the comments on my phone.
When I tried to use the WYSIWYG editor on my phone to paste a link, all hell broke loose. I highlighted the text, used the link button, and the phone could not decide if it wanted to open the onscreen keyboard or not. The onscreen keyboard just freaked out opening and closing itself so I abandoned the comment. This phone is slightly smaller than modern phones, and the keyboard takes up a lot of screen real estate.

WaterGirl
@Ruckus: Were you in private browsing, by any chance? Or have your browser set to not being able to save cookies?
TS (the original)
Just to mention – as a win 7 user – I don’t think it is worth testing further on Win 7 as it won’t be supported by MS after the end of this year. Much as I luv my 10 year old machine, it is being replace at Christmas
I mentioned my errors above because I don’t think they are particular to win 7 – other folks have the same issues
Edit1 And – that worked perfectly, took me to the comment with edit available
Edit 2 – and that also updated the comment instantly & brought me back here
NotMax
@WaterGirl
Just put together a screenshot showing both those posts together for purposes of comparison. (Reduced the image size so as to have it show up in full on the screen more readily.)
jeffreyw
reply test not so good- four tries
WaterGirl
@Ruckus: Oh, please test that, if you can. Does it behave differently with a reply than with a totally new comment from the comment box at the bottom?
jeffreyw
@jeffreyw: another go at it
eta better! one try and ok
WaterGirl
@jeffreyw: 4 tries with what result? i am bouncing from bottom to top so I can add people’s information and results at the top, so I may have missed that detail.
WaterGirl
@NotMax: That’s super helpful.
Yes, what you have in that screen capture is EXACLTY how you see tweets if you have turned off social media in the “helpful” Firefox setting or if you have blocked social media in Ghostery.
jeffreyw
@WaterGirl: I poked the button and nothing happened – 4 pokes and no salad

Switched to Firefox to see if I can tell any difference in comments showing up.
ETA: comment showed right up. Now trying to see if I can edit more than once.

@WaterGirl:
ON my system, System 76 laptop, Ubuntu 18.04.3, Firefox 70.0.1 my spacebar does a page down, always.
WaterGirl
@jeffreyw: I’m sorry. which button did you poke 4 times? using which device/browser combination?
NotMax
@WaterGirl
To which I reply that no settings or add-ons in Firefox at this end have been altered, added or subtracted from what they were before the new site rollout, yet the display pattern (blockquoted tweets versus blockquoted non-tweets) is vastly different from previously.
WaterGirl
@J R in WV: Yes, I was being imprecise. My spacebar takes me down one screen at a time on my laptop. So if I can see #19 in my list on the bottom of my screen, if I hit the spacebar, it rolls up and #20 is at the top of my screen.
WaterGirl
@NotMax: Maybe debbie can tell you which exact setting it was in Firefox that allowed her to see the tweets in a more normal way. I directed her toward her browser and/or something like Ghostery, and she found the setting in Firefox.
Paging debbie, debbie, please come to the courtesy phone.
WaterGirl
@Cheryl Rofer: Reporting everything is helpful! Like the cops always say on the TV, you never know which details will be important. It’s easy to ignore information that isn’t useful, but sometimes you don’t know what you don’t know, until someone tells you. So I appreciate all details!
P.S. Experiment with the other ways to refresh and see if it makes a difference. The REFRESH in the white bar is super helpful on a tablet or a phone, but on a computer I get more accurate results with the browser button or Cmd-R.

Not this debbie. I’m in Chrome.
WaterGirl
@NotMax: I am just trying to point you in the direction of a solution that can resolve your problem with the site we have now. The old site is gone, there is no going back to see what was different, etc.
JaySinWA
I have seen the need to refresh after post infrequently. A new post not showing will send me to the top of the page. An edit not posting sends me to some random area in a comment chain.
I haven’t seen the formatting buttons disappear recently, but I haven’t been posting much either. When I did see it, it seemed to be during times with a large number of comments.
ChromeOS Chrome.
jeffreyw
no trouble so far
jeffreyw
lost tabs now
WaterGirl
@debbie: You can’t see me, but i am making a face, though not at you. Am I remembering the right debbie, with all the spacing in the tweets, and it was Chrome and not Firefox? (I don’t use either.) Or do i have the whole thing wrong and it was someone else entirely? (the 4 days of Testing are a bit of a blur.)

My three devices all use Chrome. FWIW, tweets don’t have excessive white space for me. (Blur totally understandable.)

I have experienced the jumping keyboard thing with the link on my Android tablet in landscape mode. I can eliminate it by turning the tablet to portrait mode, but of course that won’t help on a phone which is already in portrait mode. The other workaround that helps me is to use an external bluetooth keyboard.
WaterGirl

Thank you! I had the developers put that in, but I had forgotten about it because I never use it myself. :-)

@Starfish: You may want to try a different onscreen keyboard. Google’s Gboard or another may behave better than LG’s stock keyboard.

Working fine for me right now! I was frequently having to use the refresh button to see comments (and being taken to the top of the page) earlier in the week, so it’s a big improvement. If it comes back, I’ll let you know.

@NotMax: I see that it looks different, as you said. We are using much more up-to-date software and things behave differently. You are seeing stripped down tweets rather than full tweets, so for the solution, i can only point you to whatever you have in place that is blocking tweets from displaying in their tweet format.

I’ve had pretty much all these problems since the new site went live, but most of them have self-corrected (or been corrected – thanks, WaterGirl!). About the only issues I have had – intermittently – are:

I also have a iPad, but don’t use it for BJ much.

No, but I just typed the URL instead of attempting to paste it.
This is weird; I get the edit countdown on my phone but not my desktop (BJ is open on both).
WaterGirl
I do not know how you guys that post with phones on Balloon Juice do it. I would rather drill holes in metal or eat bugs than try to comment on a blog from a phone. As my Dad always said, people are different, that’s what makes the world go ’round.
But it does surely help explain why phones may see more issues than other devices. I feel like i spent the last 3 months testing the new site, but I was not able to do much testing on my phone.
edit: and I wasn’t able to test with cache turned on.
jeffreyw
Watergirl —
Worst performer is win 10 chrome, chrome is my daily driver on several desktop machines
A switch to firefox on these machines yields no improvement. symptoms = delays in seeing comments, needs one or more refreshes, sometimes goes from button push to top of page, sometimes works fine comment tabs mostly there but not always, been seeing comments that when the comment is a no show that the result is usually a trip to the top. I think this is the caching issue you have mentioned
Two phones both running Brave browser a Pixel 3 – running android 10 – that is the one that successive button pushes were needed to see a change . May be a screen sensitivity issue unrelated to site.
2nd phone samsung S9 running android 9 has been working well albeit needing a refresh to see the edit I just made.

@jeffreyw: Thank you so much.
Redshift
@JaySinWA: I’ve experienced some weirdness with an on-screen keyboard (GBoard) and the editor, too. If I’m not at the end of the text, it seems to get confused about where the cursor is when it autocompletes a word, and it sometimes replaces the next word instead of inserting before it, and other times it inserts the word in the middle of a following word.
(I reported it and WaterGirl said the developer said it’s not something they can fix, sadly.)
WaterGirl

I’m havng some of these same problems on my Win7/Firefox laptop; am I on the list? Just checking.
WaterGirl
@jeffreyw: Thank you so much for the testing and the summary! Chrome seems to hold on to cache much longer than other browsers, so it’s no surprise that Chrome would have more of these issues than other browsers.
We all have our favorite browsers, and I would never dream of telling someone that they need to switch in order to have the site behave. Just trying to suss out patterns here, because the more I can help define the issues for the developers, the easier it is for them to solve.
WaterGirl

On to something completely different.
Can we (meaning you) fix things so browser is not overridden and any visited link shows in a different color (as per browser settings)?
If interrupted by a phone call, nature’s call, etc. cannot always remember which links people have provided that I may already have clicked on to visit, and the current iteration of the site keeps the link color showing in the unvisited color.

Tonight was the first time testing, ’cause I don’t do it much. But since I pontificated, I thought I should check. No bouncing, but it isn’t straightforward either. I was going to see if I could recreate it with LG’s default. I may yet, but it is tedious to do. I would probably just paste blind links rather than use the link tab. That seems to behave.

Speaking of Costco, their house brand Côtes du Rhône Villages is now available. Doesn’t stay in stock for a long time here when it shows up each year. Haven’t yet tried the vintage available this year but have been far, far from disappointed in years past. Protip: let it breathe for a bit.
Also, many (but not all) states do not allow members only retail sales of wines and spirits, so even if you’re not a member you can go to the service desk and get a free temporary Costco card to enable you to purchase liquor. Same with making use of their pharmacy.
Or can always ask a friend who is a member to purchase a Costco gift card for you.

Interesting! So: here’s my experience: I posted the comment at 222. I then zoomed to the top of the page using the up arrow, confirmed that it was at the top of “recent comments,” clicked on it to get back to the comment and had no edit window! So I replied to it instead and I get the thing with only text version for making the comment! No selection of tabs to toggle between. And moreover my cursor lands to the left of the code for “@me”, so scrolled over to the end of it and hit return before typing. Hope this summary makes sense. Off to see how it looks & where I land..
[adding an edit: this looks fine!
[edit #2: just now used the @me to go back to my comment at 222, which worked fine, but the back button to get back to this comment did not. Whoops, I do seem to remember if you hit the back button twice, that can work, but did not try it just now in my haste to get back to the edit window : )
[edit #3: …and now, did not see edit #2 upon hitting refresh, at all. Hit it twice more with a few moments in between and now here it is. Have no hypotheses whether it is to do with the number of times I hit it or time elapses or sunspots or what, though.

On the work computer, almost all of the commenting functions are missing, the nym is never there the first time but then is there for the rest of the session, and the happy navigation arrows along the top, to the right of “Our Store” aren’t there at all. The Comment and Refresh functions appear at the top, middle of the box. Nonetheless, the comment box works. This is in IE 11 (not possible to change it),Win10 HP Laptop, with a proprietary ad blocker that is impossible to get to.
The personal computer shows all the commenting functions in their proper places. Usually the nym is there but not always & so has to be typed in, and it stays for the rest of the session. Having to refresh to see the first reply is now a habit, but is a bit disconcerting. Other navigational aids are fully functional, and the flyout tabs are a little bit better, but still too big and don’t fade when inactive. This is in Firefox 70.0.1 64 Bit, Win 7 Prof, Lenovo ThinkPad, AdBlock Plus.
WaterGirl
@TomatoQueen: Yeah, you and I have talked before about Internet Explorer on your work computer, and I was pleased during testing that the site worked as well with IE as it did. So there’s nothing to be done there
I have not seen a problem with the nym not being retained unless the person does one of two things, either 1) coming to BJ in private mode, because then the cookie is not saved, or 2) having set your browser so that cookies are not saved. Does your setup resemble one of those two situations?
If the flyouts aren’t pale blue and quite see-through on your computer, I think there must be something that is set on your system that is causing you to see them only a little bit better, because the change is quite dramatic in terms of being able to easily read what is below them.
WaterGirl
I feel certain that there are hundreds of hardware / operating system / browser / setting combinations represented here by Balloon Juice commenters, and it’s not possible for everything to be exactly right on every combination, no matter how varied or old or how unusual the setups. No matter how talented the developers – and we are lucky to have our developers, who are most certainly clever and are quite talented – there will definitely be “edge” cases where it’s not possible for every single thing to be perfect for everyone on every possible permutation.
But the issues of comments sometimes not showing up until they are manually refreshed, sometimes even multiple times, the edit window disappearing, not landing in the proper place after posting a comment, having to hit the reply button twice before @nym shows up… all of those things are almost certainly cache related and can be fixed so they can be counted on to behave in a reliable fashion.
Not patting myself on the back, because I did none of the actual programming, but I expect that anyone with much experience at all in the area of website development and rollouts for a site this complex could tell you that we are in really great shape for being just one week out from the rollout. You have all been quite patient, and I hope you can all be patient for just a little while longer.
Omnes Omnibus
@WaterGirl: Just don’t tell us we are internetting wrong and we should be okay.
TomatoQueen
@WaterGirl: I have the “do not track” check box checked to avoid backtracking by evil sites, as well as the “delete cookies & site data when Firefox is closed”, and in spite of that box, such cookies and data are taking up 1 GB of space–somehow. There’s a button that calls itself manage permissions which at this hour is to be looked at but not touched.
As to the flyouts–I have my display setups set to enlarge everything slightly, use Times New Roman where feasible, and use system colors, with everything looking as close as possible to Windows Classic. So somewhere in all that display stuff is some setting or other that will affect the flyouts. I may or may not find it or them! But the effect occurs in both browsers, so I’ll just need to find the common element.
Otherwise it all looks lovely. Thank you very much.
WaterGirl
@Omnes Omnibus: Fair enough. If you catch me saying something that sounds like i think you are internet-ing wrong, you can be assured that I will have somehow bumbled my communication. Because telling people they are using the internet wrong is beyond arrogant and insulting, and that is most certainly not how I view things.
Omnes Omnibus

Yes. Sometimes takes 2 or 3 refreshes before my comment does appear, tho there appears to be a time factor involved.
At the top of the page.
How often? 1 out of 10 comments or so
Windows 10, Firefox.
Also, when I am reading comments and say Spanky replies to something Kay says. If I click on Kay’s name to see what elicited Spanky’s response, when I then click on the return arrow it takes me nowhere near Spanky’s comment, and I have to start scrolling in search of it, which is especially a pain if I didn’t notice what # comment it was.
Also, if you are taking a poll, I am in favor of getting rid of the pop up comment box when I am replying to a person.
Lastly, thanx for all you do WG. I know you aren’t getting paid near enough to put up with a bunch of baying jackals. Or should that be braying?

Came here to report ongoing problem on Android with Samsung browser, i.e., after posting a comment I am left at the top of the original post or a few screens down from there, and I have to refresh the page to see my comment.
Now that I’m here (Win10, Firefox), the pop-up comment window does not appear. I get the “in-line” comment box, which appears to be in Text mode. (Limited set of buttons, no option to switch to Visual.)
ETA: This comment posted successfully, appeared spontaneously and left me at the correct spot. And now the pop-up comment box appears as I edit.

Just had a problem with the pop-up comment box (Win10, Firefox). After posting (in the “Kicked Up a Notch” thread), I was left at the top of the thread, and I had to refresh the page two times to see my comment.
ETA: This comment appeared immediately, and I was left in the right place (at that comment).
ETFA: But I had to refresh the page to see the ETA.

2. Yes. Always.
3. Back to the top. Always.
4. See #3.
Windows 10; Chrome
ETA: However, nym is sticking consistently for the first time in months. Kudos.

Comments have been working well for me this week, and it’s been overall a better experience on the new site. I especially like that my name and email saves now.
My only pet peeve is the Post + Comments button that takes me back to the top of the post I just read. I liked the way the old site comments button at the bottom of the post jumped straight to the comments or to whatever was under the fold.

@Bobby Thomson:
And now I see no refreshing is necessary for the comment to stick, but I bounce up randomly into the middle of the thread.
Bobby Thomson
@Bobby Thomson: And no sooner did I post that then the comment required refreshing and I once again bounced up to the top.

Link button present but did not work.

@Omnes Omnibus:
Omnes, your comment was nominated by someone to be a rotating tag. :-)

? I haven’t been commenting enough lately to have these problems. But I just had #2 happen to me just now when I commented on a thread I came back to after reading something on another site. I’ll try to reproduce it.
Details:
iPhone 6S Plus, iOS 13.2.3, Firefox 20 for iOS, Private browser window.

ETA
1. does it show after posting a 2nd comment wo leaving this page for another window or website=
worked fine— but this edit did require a manual refresh to see it.
2. popped over to another website in this “browser tab” & adding this—edit timer resets & the cursor is back at my comment after I posted the edit

@Tenar Arha:
3. Cute. As long as you don’t close the open “tab,” you can still edit your post if you navigate over to another site & return. But if you close that tab, your ability to edit your post is gone. Which makes sense.
