Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

We’re watching the self-immolation of the leading world power on a level unprecedented in human history.

Why is it so hard for them to condemn hate?

An almost top 10,000 blog!

The media handbook says “controversial” is the most negative description that can be used for a Republican.

Wake up. Grow up. Get in the fight.

A snarling mass of vitriolic jackals

There are no moderate republicans – only extremists and cowards.

Our messy unity will be our strength.

I would gladly pay you tuesday for a hamburger today.

And now I have baud making fun of me. this day can’t get worse.

Hey Washington Post, “Democracy Dies in Darkness” was supposed to be a warning, not a mission statement.

Well, whatever it is, it’s better than being a Republican.

He wakes up lying, and he lies all day.

Republican speaker of the house Mike Johnson is the bland and smiling face of evil.

We will not go quietly into the night; we will not vanish without a fight.

“Until such time as the world ends, we will act as though it intends to spin on.”

When I was faster i was always behind.

If rights aren’t universal, they are privilege, not rights.

Only Democrats have agency, apparently.

Of course you can have champagne before noon. That’s why orange juice was invented.

One way or another, he’s a liar.

Republicans: The threats are dire, but my tickets are non-refundable!

When tyranny becomes law, rebellion becomes duty. ~Thomas Jefferson

MORNING: Trump calls into Fox & Friends, pushes bogus Crowdstrike theory
AFTERNOON: https://t.co/vztlM7VKOY

— James Poniewozik (@poniewozik) November 22, 2019

It could be worse, you could be a Republican (assuming you could drop 40 IQ points and every moral qualm)…

With Thanksgiving coming up, Doocy and Kilmeade give a masterclass here on uncomfortable inquisitive faces when a relative is saying something widely inappropriate or awkward. https://t.co/webrJpXHg5

— andrew kaczynski? (@KFILE) November 22, 2019

I insist that you take 5 minutes and listen to every mini-clip in this thread from this morning. No, don’t read the summaries: LISTEN. 5 minutes. This is the President of the United States. https://t.co/z6jz72TLkj

— Sherrilyn Ifill (@Sifill_LDF) November 23, 2019

Dunno why people are assuming he misspoke ;) https://t.co/yEGntYMlIT

Trump's ramblings on how many "stars" he's made over the years are completely off the rails pic.twitter.com/8k9rSguomE

— Aaron Rupar (@atrupar) November 22, 2019

“I want a trial,” Trump said of the Senate. Says he wants Hunter Biden and “nut job” Adam Schiff to testify. He also called Pelosi as “crazy as a bedbug”

— Manu Raju (@mkraju) November 22, 2019

[Projection sidebar: ““Crazy as a Bed Bug” is an old expression that (according to the website Why Do We Say It) owes its origin to the almost insane antics of a bedbug crawling around on a mattress. Its motions are zigzag, its direction uncertain. Thus, it would appear that the bedbug’s “craziness” was more along the lines of unpredictability rather than dementia… “]

Another of the President's go-to weird hiccups: "It's going to come out, it's a thing that'll shock you, it's coming." It never does. https://t.co/p7fT6246SE

— Tom Nichols (@RadioFreeTom) November 22, 2019

What the whole thing ultimately boils down to is this: the President and his supporters aren't disputing what happened and they don't care that it's wrong. https://t.co/79CJ5SiGwT

— Ari Kohen (@kohenari) November 22, 2019

“We’ll do it more often,” Trump says, as Fox & Friends tries to wrap up this phonecall which is going on an hour! ??

— Miriam Elder (@MiriamElder) November 22, 2019

The running joke here is that the GOP keeps coming up with increasingly impossible standards for impeachment which Trump casually meets within a week.

“Anything short of an audio recording of him explicitly stating he did it…”

Since Trump is motivated only about squelching corruption, I assume that means we will soon be cutting off aid to Israel?  Or at a minimum, cutting it off until they strip Bibi of his position and toss him in prison where he belongs.

I mean seriously, the corruption there goes to the very top.

As things currently stand Spencer has gone on record with his version and Esper hasn't (and Trump is just a liar, period). So it seems reasonable to treat Spencer's account—that he refused to carry out Trump's orders re: Gallagher—as the credible one, for now.— Susan Hennessey (@Susan_Hennessey) November 25, 2019

Did anyone else notice the handwritten date at the top of the letter Spencer sent?  Sort of like he had it drafted and just needed to date it.  Mattis also apparently had a letter ready.  I wonder if any other Trump staffers are thus prepared.  Of course, anybody with any degree of competence and/or character is long gone.

What I hate about this Crowdstrike nonsense is how Trump and his enablers are quick to push conspiracy theories, but they never even try to provide any evidence to support them.

Trump also blocks people from testifying, and then he pretends he’s exonerated.

Trump ties the world in knots with lies before the truth can put its boots on. He knows the media won’t do the work to clarify matters, which also works to his advantage, if someone tries to pin him down he just dodges or changes the subject — he knows they’ll have to quickly move on. Tragically, these cheap tactics work time after time.

Problem for “sane” Republicans (electorally versus the myriad of other issues) is they cannot win elections any more (except in the most gerrymandered / backwards districts / states) without the support of Trump and the deplorables.  But deplorables can win without “sane” Republicans.  So as always, self interest rules the “sane” Republicans and they have to shift with the wind to stay in the good graces of the Chief Deplorable and his rabble.  Or they could grow principles and lose (Ha!).  There’s always a deplorable in the wings ready to take on a RINO.

One hopes the Californication of the national Republican party will happen sooner rather than later, but structural impediments at the national level allow minority parties great leverage (at least if impeding good governance is the leverage).
