I asked Pelosi specifically about this Thursday. Her response was blunt: “absolutely not.” Waiting for courts means July or later for all this testimony. They’ll instead push impeachment next 2 months & continue these investigations/hearings next year. https://t.co/mxEoINQEQd

New CNN poll:
By 50-43, Americans say Trump should be impeached *and removed*
53% say Trump used the presidency improperly
56% say Trump's pressure on Ukraine was about benefiting himself politically
Only 36% say Trump cared about fighting corruptionhttps://t.co/iXoVeU49qv

Interesting little nugget from the Morning Consult poll: Slightly more respondents support removing Trump from office (50%) than support the impeachment inquiry itself (48%).
Support for Trump impeachment and removal up three points since last week's hearings to 50%.

it took 2 years of investigation to get Nixon to resign. Of course, he never admitted to his crimes on live TV. It should be pro-forma trial and removal in the Senate if the Republicans had a shred of decency left. But it has been obvious for some time that they don’t

Removal of Trump is important but not the only goal Pelosi needs to pursue. I don’t know how to shake up McConnell enough to get him to start doing his legislative duties (how many bills are now piled up in his inbox?). But I suspect, based on nothing but pie-eyed optimism, that she does. Maybe something involving a visitation from the Ghosts of Three Snapping Turtles or something.

Hey…I missed the thread on Indian food.
did someone say they had a good recipe for Indian Butter Chicken? The first time I had it was a a local restaurant when I visited India in 2009 I think…and I love it so much, I found a recipe to make it from scratch, but then I found a quick suace pack for Butter Chicken and I’ve made it with the packets ever since.
The from scratch recipe though, was the BEST butter chicken I’d ever cooked, but I’ve already lost that recipe so haven’t made it in like 10 years. So if any a good, from scratch recipe, for Butter chicken…please let me know!

I’m kind of stunned to say this, but Chris Cillizza had a good take on the CNN poll, which was to point out that the support for impeaching Trump is about 20 points higher than the support for impeaching any President since Nixon, specifically including Clinton, who peaked (well, valleyed) at 29% support for impeachment.

@guachi: I’m not so sure about that, its early enough in the game for people to actually read about it and see what it means, on the face of things, sure, and a lot of this “momentum” is being driven by what Iowa and New Hampshire feel about things as well. She should have stayed on message “2 cents, NBD?” and not be having childish sh*t like “Billionaire tears” mugs for sale. Biden likely sad that, though her likely is behind it, Buttigieg is getting the available white moderates. Bernie isn’t getting a boost at all, so I assume it’s the moderates leaving her.

The only polling that matters on impeachment, which is the only polling that actually matters for the election, is the state by state polling. Especially in the ten to fifteen or twenty states that will actually decide the Electoral College outcome. That’s the only voter information that matters and that’s the only place the election is really going to be contested. The candidates, the Democratic Party, the consultants, the campaign communications specialists, the activists, etc need a simple mantra to focus on from now until election day next November:
Everything else is mental masturbation. Every plan. Every policy. Every attempt to spin the plans and policies.

Nadler is a solid member of Congress. My understanding is he’s a good person. He’s the wrong person to be running the Judiciary Committee right at this moment. All of the investigations should be run by Schiff, all Nadler’s committee should do is vote on advancing the written articles of impeachment to the full House for a vote on the House floor.
Anne Laurie
@WaterGirl: Think “packing” as a euphemism for “carrying a weapon”.

I suppose, if one extends what seems to be Pelosi’s (and Schiff’s) thinking, that Trump could be impeached, tried, acquitted by an utterly cynical and corrupt Republican Senate, investigated, and then impeached again on new charges that emerge from crimes committed during the first impeachment.
Just remember, if a Democratic president had ever done 1/100th of the shit Trump has done, starting with welcoming a hostile foreign power to hijack their campaign right after they had paid off a porn star to cover up an extramarital affair, we’d be in year three of Civil War II by now, talking about which city will burn next.

@debbie: Goldman is employed by Schiff as his committee counsel (majority counsel) and director of investigations. He doesn’t work for Nadler or the Judiciary Committee. @Adam L Silverman: Respectfully disagree. You’re obviously correct that state by state polls are the only polls that matter when an issue is before the electoral college, but impeachment is not such an issue. Instead, I think there is a benefit in polls that give a sense of what the entire nation is thinking on this issue. 50% probably doesn’t do it, but a national poll that gets to 55% or higher for impeachment is going to be a “holy shit” moment for a lot of people, and could have a snowball effect. Provided, of course, that it’s sound polling, and is truly representative of the nation. Just my two cents, of course.

This one does make me feel better as the previous one felt like an agitprop smear attempt like we saw a lot in 2016. I’m pretty paranoid right now.
I was writing novels today about how the whole thing was centered around the tweet giving a different meaning to the word “testifies,” removing it from the context where it felt like Pete was saying that kids look around and see that the system isn’t working at all, and putting into one where he was calling for a scared straight style program.
I felt like Pete’s full statement and the objection to it were very similar so I didn’t understand the hatred.

The reason why I feared the reaction was that the people who were passing it along were doing so under titles like, “Pete is a racist piece of shit,” and the one way that I could see keeping turnout low is if that sticks.

@JPL: So we’re no longer calling it Baud’s Day?
karen marie
@lamh36: Thanks for this. I had read the first article yesterday.
Harriott is a great writer and thinker.

@karen marie: Lots of system farts – including my own – but the one at issue right now is the lack of an ability to edit my just posted comment.
Anyway – that’s Harriot, with one T, not two.

@guachi: She always was for M4A putting out a plan may have been an error, but supporting M4A wasn’t a change.
It could be many things. The poll could be an outlier. Mayor Pete may have become the flavor of the day. People may be looking for more moderate in general. Misogyny may be rearing its head. The moneyed interests may have started the drum beat against her. But M4A isn’t a new position for her.

I’ve made a few snarky comments over the last week that were in a similar vein. I tend to catch Morning Joe clips to see the state of the race and other details that occur overnight. They’ve pretty much going after her for the last 3 weeks or so ever since she looked like a real threat.
Not sure she’s down for the count yet – Bloomberg entering the race might actually help her, plus with Buttigieg surging, they’ll suddenly start worrying about whether a gay candidate is electable at the national level.

Asylum-Seeker Held Incommunicado For Three Weeks By Border Patrol

Aaron Reichlin-Melnick @ReichlinMelnick
The extent to which the Border Patrol has over the past year aggressively defended its ability to disappear people for weeks at a time is something that hasn’t gotten enough attention.
Think how many families were left in fear that a loved one died crossing the border.
I think this is one more way that fear is used as a tactic in the US administration’s overall goal of controlling people’s decisions and bodies.
Aleta
@Baud: Aren’t most days at BJ called Baud’s Day?
Dan B
@lamh36: Much better than the last piece but probsbly much less likely to be read because the title is not clickbait. It points out that Pete’s “wisdom” about race in America is fairly shallow. That’s a very valid critique. At the same time the understanding of race in America by white Americans is so paper thin it is transparent. It’s so thin that a light breeze rips it to threads.
This causes problems for Democrats.
If a candidate goes full tilt on addressing systemic racism the white electorate rips to shreds, although they would never tell their friends, or themselves, that fear of black and brown people was the reason. So we have that horrible politucal problem: do we vote for the good enough or the sorta okay but electable?
And the other issue is Ben Gauzy Buttery Male. Every candidate is going to have a couple every time their poll numbers put them in sight of the nomination. Harris, my favorite but her sister may not be a great campaign manager, and she’s a cop…. Warren is unlikeable and will take away your healthcare and bankrupt the
billionairescountry!!My fear is we help the Russians and RW bots by failing to notice the Ben Gauzies.
At the same time we should not ignore the candidates shortcomings. People like people who acknowledge they have fallen short and know they need to fo better. Clinton’s ratings went up when he fessed up. So I’m glad that Pete stepped up. If he’s our leader he will have bigger challenges than this. The RWNJ’s, Putin, and Xi are far more adept and can be more subtle than Michael Harriot.
Let’s hope all the candidates, and all Americans who love democracy learn from this.

@Dan B:
stealing the Ben Gauzi Butterie Male reference.
one issue I have with some of the cantidates, is that their gaps in knowledge and life experience cannot be filled in with a crash course, ( it takes years), is not recognized by their staff ( so far, despite blunders and pushback) as a gap that needs to be filled, and they have not hired/woo’ed any one of the thousands who could fill that gap in their campaign.
I worry less about the cantidates with operational holes in their campaigns, because those rarely get ignored or dismissed as unimportant.

Dan B
@Jay: Pete supposedly has a very diverse staff, 40% minority, so the blind spots are weird. And you are right that a crash course is as likely to inspire overconfidence as real understanding. Understanding of facts and figures is not as valuable as feeling the connections thousands of tiny pinpricks in your bones. Our logic stores are slower than our feelings.
Jay
@Dan B:
the sad thing is, the gaps are not “unaparrant”, instead the gaps are dismissed as either attacks, or nitpicking.
it’s not that difficult to bring in people yo fill those gaps, ( some would even volenteer), but the blindness towards the gaps, pretty much ensures, like Hamilton, Ontario, they will bring in all the wrong people.

@zzyzx: I believe the Mayor Pete appeal is he is incredibly calm. That appeals to a lot of Midwesterners who feel that America would revert to being nice to each other if we had a nice President.
Adam has pointed out that we are at war, a cold civil war that could go hot. The nice polite people feel afraid because they sense the lutch towards war but are hopeful, probably naively, that politeness can put us back on track. But we need justice, honesty, transparency, and dignity. We need to point out when these are being betrayed. Soft talk, big stick is the moment we are in. Pete turned around a GOP town so he’s got part of the solution but the players on our national stage include Mercers, Kochs, Pence’s flying Chistianists, Putin’s minions, and Xi’s stealth warriors.

Don’t forget Nazis.
Normal people look at the book signing, the Conference, the Denny’s, where the Reichwing attacked, ( verbally) the Rightwing as a “epic fail”.
It’s not. It’s a calculated strategy by the Reichwing to force the Rightwing to adopt more eliminationist and racist rhetoric and policies, to avoid attacks from the Reich.
Basically the Still Dead Briebart, Daily Caller and Wingnut Teabagger Rep influencing op that Steven Miller used to get the ReThugs/BSA/ICE etc to go full Nazi on Immigration and Refugees.
Dan B
@lamh36: Enthusiasm worries me too. As a somewhat clueless high IQ, white gay guy I feel I recognize Pete’s cluelessness. I was him in the 60’s and still know how much I don’t completely and may never understand, about the experience of people of color. I also see the telltale signs that Pete feels his limited insights and good intentions are enough. It shows his lack of experience. It would be great for him to volunteer with Stacey Abrams voter registration movement, or others, for a few years. Earn some national cred, or even statewide cred. Indiana had a huge Klan, the biggest at one time.

@lamh36: Michael Harriot’s article has been read more than a million times. The comments on twitter call him CIA, stone cold racist, etc.
The damage is done. If Pete can pull out of this it will be a miraculous comeback. Ben Gauzy and Buttery Males followed the Himmler / marketing rules. And I don’t have to spell Benghazi right for anyone to understand what I’m talking about.
It seems like the trolls and bots dud their homework: Find a trusted and respected influencer, repeat through social media, wait for mainstream pundits to spread it. Seem like an ally to your target audience.
Harriot is not the cause. He’s the unwitting spark to hundreds of years of much deserved outrage. But the malevolent bots won. So far.

Loathsome, and continued interference with American politics.
Dan B
@Jay: I recall reading that some black leaders were frustrated that Pete didn’t feel he needed their input early in the campaign even after David Axelrod observed there were very few black people at his launch event.
At this point it will just be a series of trusted pundits and bloggers being used by the Russians to inflame followers around the fractures in our democratic society. Morning Joe seems to be carrying the flag for American and Russian oligarchs against Warren.
They’re quiet about Joe but he’s not needing much push to keep stumbling.
Jay
@Dan B:
the funny thing is, the criticism of Pete and his Campaign by most of the “influencers”, is substantive. Will Pete and his Campaign learn from that and adapt? Maybe, maybe not.
will the MSM amplify it and use it for their own purposes, yup they have for decades, even if few noticed the manipulation, playing of favorites and outright disinformation.
will the ReThugs and Russians try to amp it and slant it, make complete lies out of it, to sandbag the Democratic Party and create dissent and division, of course, but they were going to do that anyway. Even Bernie Bro’s have gotten into the “fake news” business.
if anybody who needed to learn anything from both of his op eds learned something, then it was worth it. If Pete went away from the conversation with anything learned, it was worth it.

IMO alla yinz’re right, but for the wrong reasons. The MOTU are simply using their housebroken “poundits” to remind the electorate that the rich always skate. That none of Warren’s grandiose plans to reshape the economy are going to pry an extra dime from the plutocrats’ moneybins to pay for them – their flunkies installed in the Senate and the courts will see to that.
The bitter choice of a Warren (or indeed any progressive Democratic) Presidency would be: Abandon the plans, or find other ways to pay for them. We won’t do the former – we’re too convinced that our plans are necessary and right. Instead we’ll do what we’ve always done: Raise taxes on the middle class. Because “That’s where the money is” (bank-robber Willie Sutton) – at least what money is left after the plutocrats have stolen theirs. The middle class will be asked to pay for programs whose value to them they doubt** but also to pay for those poorer than them. While the rich skate.
** You wonder why the Trumpanzees love it when their Furor owns the libs? Look no further than Monica Potts’ op-ed “In The Land Of Self-Defeat” from the Oct. 4 Vichy TImes, It’s about a hardscrabble Arkansas county that decided (by means of a committee) to use the windfall of extraction fees from frackers to build a new library – which ignited a firestorm of criticism when the revenues fell & the residents got stuck with the bill for the remainder. The critics’ attitude in effect was You hoity-toities decided what was good for us without asking & told us it’d be free & now you want us to pay for it – well, fuck you! And the author, who left for the Least Coast decades earlier & has now returned to write a book (presumably in the spirit of rural anthropology) about the people she grew up around, cannot wrap her hoity-toity head around the residents’ resentment about spending money that (it turned out) the county didn’t have for a fancy library with all sorts of obscure & arcane facilities they didn’t think they needed.
There is in fact economic anxiety afoot in the land, twisted up with bigotry & misogyny & tribalism. It’s all about people who bought the “American Dream” (“You have to be asleep to believe it” – George Carlin) that every generation is mandated to do better than the ones before, but haven’t seen it for a couple of generations now, as the rich scarf up all the value of their increased productivity & leave anyone who dares to demand better for themselves & their families no choice but to take it away from those on their level or below – while we “progressives” insist that instead they have to share whatever’s left after the rich skate with people who don’t look like them, talk like them, love like them, worship like them, or live like them.
I would feel much better about Warren if she made a solemn vow that none of her wondrous “plans” would be put into place unless & until they could be funded without anyone with an annual income under (pick a number, say $250, 000) having to pay a single penny extra in taxes. Because no one but the most crackbrained of “activists” think those “plans” could otherwise fly without triggering Tea Party 2.0. It doesn’t matter whether she has ways to implement X% of them in the face of a hostile Senate. All that matters is who pays for them. People who feel for decades they’ve been screwed out of their share of the American Dream (which to be honest expired once the rest of the industrialized world recovered from WW2) don’t care about anything but “who pays – not me!” Whether or not they’re bigots, misogynists, and/or tribalists. Keep telling them “the rich will pay” & they’ll laugh in your face out of bitter experience. And Mango Mussolini will get a second term & finish destroying American democracy without needing the Russian trolls to lift a finger.
Kathleen
@Aleta: I know what you mean. I traveled for years when I was in college and loved it. I think it could be age. I just focus on “one thing at a time what is the most important thing I need to do in this minute strategy”. Sorry to be so late in responding but I went to bed early!

@guachi: Bullshit. Shenanigans. Somebody badly wants to create that impression and has their talking points ready, which you are conveniently trotting out.
Chris Johnson
The thing about Warren is if she really could not win an election, a primary, if she could not put a muzzle on the out-of-control oligarchs and banksters, they would not have to fight her in this way. I’m seeing desperation moves, well ahead of any primaries. It’s an existential crisis for the MOTUs (or at least it seems like it to them because God forbid they pay or give up anything ever, they will die if they don’t have every bit of the tax cut or subsidy they got two weeks ago. Global competition will obliterate them if they can’t march on a road of our bones themselves! Oh noes!)
I might have to hit the bricks… again. Last time I felt compelled to go out and work for Bernie. This time I would be in a position of telling people I worked for Bernie LAST time, but wanted Warren even back then, and now I am working for Warren and intentionally not for Bernie. It’s much, much harder to astroturf a wave election than it is to astroturf a poll, or simply fake it, or pay for a lot of media to try and manipulate the area where the poll is to be taken, and then tout the results of the poll where you spent a lot of money to condition the results. It’s illegal to doctor the votes of an election, but it’s not illegal to do any fucking thing you like to try and change the conditions of the election.
Warren threw the gauntlet at Bloomberg, saying this is about who votes: people, or money. This is what it looks like to have that gauntlet taken up. This, in some way (possibly legal, even!) is what it looks like when money fights back and says NOPE. No no, you serve only me. You do not get to choose.
