Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

We are builders in a constant struggle with destroyers. keep building.

He really is that stupid.

It is possible to do the right thing without the promise of a cookie.

Republicans want to make it harder to vote and easier for them to cheat.

If you cannot answer whether trump lost the 2020 election, you are unfit for office.

“When somebody takes the time to draw up a playbook, they’re gonna use it.”

Stop using mental illness to avoid talking about armed white supremacy.

Narcissists are always shocked to discover other people have agency.

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

Second rate reporter says what?

Prediction: the gop will rethink its strategy of boycotting future committees.

We can’t confuse what’s necessary to win elections with the policies that we want to implement when we do.

The real work of an opposition party is to hold the people in power accountable.

Today’s gop: why go just far enough when too far is right there?

I did not have this on my fuck 2025 bingo card.

A sufficient plurality of insane, greedy people can tank any democratic system ever devised, apparently.

Balloon Juice, where there is always someone who will say you’re doing it wrong.

Weird. Rome has an American Pope and America has a Russian President.

The republican ‘Pastor’ of the House is an odious authoritarian little creep.

They are not red states to be hated; they are voter suppression states to be fixed.

Take hopelessness and turn it into resilience.

People are complicated. Love is not.

Well, whatever it is, it’s better than being a Republican.

Why is it so hard for them to condemn hate?

Because the GOP is engaged in such bad faith discussion that they would immediately lie and obfuscate, insisting it was political persecution, to the point that people with actual information would feel like they were going crazy.

I remember the aluminum tubes: the IAEA – the organization that found Saddam Hussein was cheating, remember! – said they weren’t for centrifuges, they couldn’t be; and, Iraq had documentary evidence (including an explanation for the super-tight tolerances – with higher tolerances, their testing failed) showing they were used for rockets.

BAM! Rice, and others, saying “these are for centrifuges, and they can only be for centrifuges.” A clear, flat out, no questions asked, lie. But, hey, it only caused a bunch of foreigners to die, and created suffering for a lot of others, it brought about ISIS (but on the plus side, caused a war that lasted until a Democrat was in office, so they could blame all the perfectly predicted [sic] ill effects on him.

At least “He kept us safe, if you ignore 9/11, and don’t count deployed troops as ‘us’.” Seriously, I’m not sure how anyone believes anything any GOPpie says.

Just down the street from St. Michael’s Monastery in Kyiv is a place called O’Brien’s Irish Pub. It is as authentically Irish as I am authentically a carioca, but it is a place where you will invariably encounter an upper-middle-aged American guy drinking by himself waiting to meet a young Ukrainian woman who’s looking for a green card. When I think of Rudy in Ukraine, I think of nothing so much as those pathetic losers you see in O’Brien’s.

First post since the new site was put in, but can one of the front pagers address all of the fainting couches that have been pulled out every time Obama talks about not alienating people who would otherwise be receptive to the Dem message?
Bernie has specifically always had a following that is toxic to anyone not already within the fold. Now there is a Politico hit piece about him “personally intervening” to stop Bernie which seems really out of character for him considering how 2016 passed with Bernie helping so enough damage to Hillary to be a factor in Trump winning.

An alternative theory would be that since the arrest of parnas and fruman, one or both have been cooperating witnesses, and the SDNY has been given more leads and the development of a much larger investigation, which is taking some time.  The subpoenas this past week show they are going after Rudy for varied crimes.  Following the expansive misdeeds of Giuliani is not done in a day.  Plus, the saying is that if you come at the king you must not miss also applies to his first level acolytes.  When they come for Giuliani it had better be airtight.

It always astounds me that Giuliani was the frontrunner for most of the Republican presidentail primary in 2008. His support only collapsed in the month before voting started.

Instead of retiring as an elder statesman he decided to cash in as the fixer for every despot and criminal oligarch on the planet.

Source (just because I have the link handy, and the whole comment is worth reading):
    Frank Wilhoit, 03.22.18, on conservatism
And the bit about anti-conservatism is worth quoting too:

The core proposition of anti-conservatism requires no supplementation and no exegesis. It is as sufficient as it is necessary. What you see is what you get:
The law cannot protect anyone unless it binds everyone; and it cannot bind anyone unless it protects everyone.

@Felanius Kootea: This article from Rolling Stone is a must read!  Thanks for posting it.

It reminded me of the piece Michael Harriot posted.  1. He is trusted. 2. The title was inflammatory but made it a must-read.  3. It got more than a million retweets within days.

It brings up questions.   How many people are regular readers of Michael Harriot?   How did it get so many retweets so rapidly?   Were any of the people sharing the piece Russian bots?  Hiw many bots would it take to make the piece go viral?  ( I don’t think it woukd take many since the pump  -Pete is a white elite.- has already been primed.

Since every Democratic candidate has some flaws that create anxiety or hostility in some group will any be able to overcome the coming onslaught?  Can we stand up for any of them in a way in which we won’t further the circular firing squad dynamic?

Why did Giuliani get away with making Kerik (who’d worked for him in the Intelligence Division) Prison Commissioner and then Police Commissioner,  after he’d been officially informed that Kerik accepted mob money ?

Why did Giuliani get away with having Bush appoint Kerik (his partner in Giuliani Partners and in Giuliani Security) to be Interior Minister of Iraq , so he could restructure the ministry, intelligence service, customs, and police while accepting a $250,000 bribe from Eitan Wertheimer.  And after that, how did he manage to get Bush to nominate Kerik to be Director of Homeland Security?

Rudy Guiliani isn’t in jail because he hasn’t been convicted of a crime as yet nor even charged with one.  If one believes in the rule of law, then there are certain preconditions to someone being incarcerated; including the legal presumption of innocence and the requirement of due process of law.  Now, there may well be corrupt reasons that no charge or conviction has occurred as yet (cough Bill Barr), but that doesn’t overcome the prerequisites required by the rule of law.  I suspect most jackals know all this, including John.  Happy Thanksgiving!

    @patroclus:

the question is why is Rudy not in jail already. It’s pretty clear that he has been criming in various ways long before “Mr. Noun, Verb, 9/11”, and pretty obvious about the criming.

Minions, confidantes and partners have been found guilty of criming and gone to jail, but like Dolt 55, Rudy’s always been ignored.

The answer to John’s question is really pretty simple. The US Justice system really doesn’t care much about White Collar  Criming unless it’s their friends and family being ripped off.

And of course, in a time of Citizen’s United, the whole idea that Foreign Governments can’t buy influence or pay for ratfu€king is just, how do we say it,…….

This was reported in The Economist magazine at the time, and must have been reported in other places.
