So should we in the rest of the world be knitting pouches and mittens for Australia’s future use? I am not being snarky. When my mom died she left a lot of unfinished kniting projects. Nobody much wants the wool, and I have lots of sweaters already, so I don’t need more. I already knit scarves and hats for locals, but I would love to knit pouches for future use in Australia.

I found this twitter thread both fascinating and horrifying:

I have always had a soft spot for Koala bears. My uncle met a girl when he was stationed in Australia during WWII, went back to marry her and never returned. I never met him, but his friends would travel to the states now and then over the years, and they would always stop by to see our family.
I was the baby of the family and they always brought me Koala bears – I had quite the collection! This brings back nice memories from childhood, but the devastation from fires is horrible.

yes, macrame locally, knit globally.

The fires have been horrible and are, in large part, due to the worst drought in many years. Farmers and graziers are really doing it tough as they rely on rain fall which we haven’t had. This should be the start of our rainy season but apart from a few intense and brief thunderstorms we have had virtually none.

If you like dogs and detective fiction, Robert Crais has written two books, “Suspect” and “Promise” (which I just finished) about a military dog named Maggie, who is wounded in war and finds new life as a Los Angeles police dog. The description of the world from the point of view of Maggie has remarkable empathy, her sense of the world, her loyalty and her remarkable skills. Good mysteries too.

Am I right in thinking that the koala population was already in trouble because of disease? And if so, would the rescue dogs also catch it?

OT: I never had kids but I did spend a lot of time with an eleven years younger sister, and many stepchildren.
Is it normal to criticize your kid’s every move and behavior in front of all your assembled relatives and your kid, who can speak and understand Emglish, when the kid is only being minimally cranky when his routine has been totally disrupted for the day? My sister and my husband think it is just moms being moms. I was kind of shocked: these kids can hear and also speak English. I realize they just tune Mom out, but still.

They’ve owned the place for 9 months, I’ve had to use this method of payment 7 times(they were physically present for two payments) and I’ve had problems 2 out of 7 times. Also, we were at a big table with no sideboard. Big jerk at the middle ( one of the dads) would not pass food. So everything at either end of the table stayed that that end because it couldn’t pass him. I am 65 years old and have been to many family gatherings and have never seen that particular jerkish behavior. We didn’t get half the food available because that jerk wouldn’t let it down to our end without a big hubbab. I would have liked to have a few veggies.
Family harmony is great, but I don’t think we will go to Columbus again for that particular crew. We will happily go out to California for them, but leave the Columbus (not native to the city) jerks behind.

As for the food hog, could you not just get up and get the dishes the jerk wouldn’t pass? Get up, walk down to his end of the table, grab the dish and sweetly say, “Oh, we’re so looking forward to trying some of these delicious-looking green beans at this end of the table” and walk back to your seat with the green beans. Do it as many times as you need to. You can always add, “I didn’t want to trouble you to pass them down” if you get dirty looks.

@rikyrah: Amazon prime offers it half price for a few months to try it out. I signed up today but haven’t drilled down to look at the offerings yet.
Martin
@?BillinGlendaleCA: You might want to pass along CA law on this matter.
You don’t need to be a dick about it, but they do need to provide you a different means of payment. If they have a property manager, they can accept rent payment through them. You can use this to negotiate a more convenient means of payment. Venmo or something like that if you’re comfortable, or I think you could just demand that they pick up the check from you if they won’t give an address to mail it to
[Edit] They can put a dropbox on the property and have you use that. I’ve seen that done before. Since it sounds like they’re local, they just need to swing by to empty it out. That way you don’t need to coordinate with them.
Raven
@jeffreyw: The nice thing about it an Acorn via Amazon is that you can cancel any time.
?BillinGlendaleCA
@Steve in the ATL: Actually my credit score isn’t bad, they did this with all 3 tenants.
?BillinGlendaleCA
@Miss Bianca: They don’t live locally, I think based on the area code(I know that means squat now) West LA or the South Bay. But this has become a real issue, it’s failed or nearly failed as payment over a 1/4 of the time.

@?BillinGlendaleCA: Well, if they have 3-4 tenants, they only need to swing by once a month to collect all of them. A PO box is about $20 a month, depending on where you get it.
It’s on them to provide a different mechanism. You can work with them to identify a mechanism that works best for you.

I can’t stand that mothers don’t realize the damage they’re doing to their kids. Especially when other people are around!
As for that table pig, I’d have just gotten up, walked to the other end, picked up the dish, walked back to my seat, and shared it with the table neighbors. It wouldn’t have taken much shaming for him to grow the fuck up and start doing the right thing.
?BillinGlendaleCA
@Martin: I’m pretty flexible, but it shouldn’t involve a great deal of effort on my part(that’s just good business you want to make it easy for folk to give you money). Them picking it up is fine, a drop box works, mailing it to a PO Box works(we suggested that), credit card works. Venmo won’t work cause there’s an upper limit($500).
Yarrow
@?BillinGlendaleCA: Sounds like they don’t want to be accommodating. Do you know Tenant X? Maybe it isn’t as convenient for them as you were told. If there’s also Tenant Y and Z and they also hate it, perhaps you could all ask together for another way. Best to have a few suggestions, though. You have to decide if the inconvenience is worth it for the place. Sometimes it is.
Yarrow
@?BillinGlendaleCA: They sound shady. If you raise too much fuss be prepared for them not to renew your lease.

?BillinGlendaleCA
@Sure Lurkalot: The lease is still a holdover from 2 landlords ago, we mailed it in with the first landlord and the second until the USPS lost the rent payment one month, then he hauled his butt out to collect in person.
Fair Economist
@?BillinGlendaleCA: I’d just be hard-nosed and say they can come by pick up the rent or give you a mailing address. What are they going to do, evict you? Cali is a renter-friendly state and their case is ridiculous.
catclub
@Fair Economist: I would be fine with them giving me deposit slips to mail to the bank. Now you don’t know their snail mail address. You know their bank account number and the bank’s routing number.
?BillinGlendaleCA
@catclub: I picked up a stack of deposit slips at the bank, but I have to fill them out and then go to their bank during business hours.
Gvg
@?BillinGlendaleCA: um, my experience does not sound quite relevant but it might be. Weird can equal fraud. I was living in an apartment complex and paid my rent by check, turned in at the office. It wasn’t my first apartment so it never occurred to me to ask, that was the way it always worked. I had no problems until I had a deposit on a house and they were doing the credit check. I came back to the apartment to eviction notices on mine and 90% of the apartments in the complex. People were walking around asking what is happening and I found out from maintenance that the manager had been taking money and reporting to the company that people weren’t paying the rent. Suspected gambling problem. Just before out of town company owners got suspicious, manager disappeared. It turned out that with a high number of first time renters (collage town) she had told many of them to just pay her cash, or write the checks to her not Lyons apartments. Some didn’t get receipts, some didn’t keep them.
i had to get copies of 2 years of canceled checks to get my credit cleared and had a very stressful first time home purchase. My credit union was great, put a rush on a Saturday morning emergency copy request. My fathers lawyer friend and my realtor both said the management company was breaking state law by doing those eviction notices improperly but they wanted the proof fast in case they could catch her.
I think maybe you should not believe the story they are telling. It’s hinkey. They need to act like a reputable landlord, or maybe you need to move before they at a minimum damage your credit.
Mary G
@?BillinGlendaleCA: When I rented out my house there were timing problems – mortgage due on the 4th and timely-mailed rent checks sometimes delayed caused panics. My tenant arranged auto payment of rent from his bank account into mine. It was great for both of us. See if your bank can do it?

This would be the best way. It might be worth your time talking to landlord’s bank about how that could work to avoid fees on landlord’s end and talk to your bank about how it would work for you to avoid fees. There are lots of ways to transfer money. Some have fees, some don’t.

@Minstrel Michael:
Koalas have been under threat from disease, predation by dogs, road kill, but most of all from forest clearing for agriculture and urbanisation.
Until now. Now they have to cope with so-called 100 year droughts and accompanying super bushfires happening every 10 years due to climate change. This is going to take out koalas even in the remote mountain areas.
In 20 to 30 years there will be almost none left outside of zoos. But don’t tell our government, that would be an example of alarmism.
?BillinGlendaleCA
@Gvg: Thanks for the heads up, I think they’re legit, they kicked out a long term tenant out front and have renovated the place and have it listed. I do have a vib that they want tenants of their choosing, but as Fair Economist said, CA is a renter friendly state. It’s just really a problem every month especially when the 1st falls on day when their bank isn’t open or days when parking is a problem when I return here(I usually don’t leave home on those days).
Mary G
@?BillinGlendaleCA: Sounds to me like they may want you out so they can get more rent. There’s no freaking legitimate reason why you have to physically go to the bank.
?BillinGlendaleCA
@Mary G: Auto payment only works if it’s the same bank, we checked on that. I really don’t want auto payment either, I want some control over it.
?BillinGlendaleCA

@?BillinGlendaleCA: Can you go to the bank prior to the 1st of the month when the 1st doesn’t work (Sunday/holiday)? Is there a grace period?
It still sounds like something isn’t right. Maybe they have 3-4 tenants now but what if they buy another place and have 10-15 or more? It’s not manageable for all those people to go to a bank to deposit a rent check every month. Something is weird.
?BillinGlendaleCA
@Miss Bianca: Yes, I went to their bank with a filled out check and deposit slip. The teller said the account number was wrong, I’ve deposited rent checks for the last 8 months(last month was in person since they were here to kick out my neighbor). The last time I had an issue(they eventually accepted the deposit) they said the name didn’t have llc on it. The landlord’s business is obviously in flux since they’re setting stuff up and changing things.
Barbara
@?BillinGlendaleCA: Would it be possible to use an e-check? It would go directly from your bank to theirs, no shoe leather needed. Some people don’t think Zelle is secure enough, but that is another way to transfer money directly.
?BillinGlendaleCA
@Barbara: We looked into Zeelle but they have an upper limit(I think $500).
ETA: We’ve looked at other payment options(E-payment via Quicken which is more for credit cards) and talked to our bank.
@Yarrow: I’m not sure about the grace period, there certainly will be this month since I hauled my ass to their bank sharing a parking lot with a Costco and Best Buy. I’ll text her that there was a problem and I’ll try again on Monday. To be quite honest, I think the teller misread the account number(It’s the right number and is pretty legible).
The story about the landlord is they’re a young couple(I’d say in their mid to late 30’s) that bought the place, this is their first experience with owning rental property so they had nothing really setup at the beginning. They’re also trying to make things as easy and cheaply on their end.

@?BillinGlendaleCA: Also many banks have internet banking. Our bank lets you set up another person’s account as a payee and then pay into. subsequentlythe account. There are two kinds, one is just like a check, the other is a wire transfer and has a fee. Also, the first time you do a payment, you have to leave time for it to go through in case there’s an error to correct. Afterwards it works smoothly, and you can make an automatic schedule.

There’s obviously too many places for this approach to break down and I don’t know why they seem to be so fixated on it. As I said, I ran into a problem before with the name on the account being different(I guess they changed that to have a LLC as part of the account name), that should have been a warning as to how it can fuck up. But she just chalked it up to a stupid teller. There are just too many points of failure with this approach.

@Kayla Rudbek: I used Rosetta Stone for Spanish. I’d had several informal classes and it helped pull it all together. It was the first time I really learned all the prepositions!

@Jay: malarkey and barnstorm? That’ll shed the “too old” image lickety-split!

@Minstrel Michael: You might be thinking of Tasmanian devils, who contract infectious cancer from one another.
Dogs are susceptible to that cancer, too.
More information here, but be warned that there is a very distressing picture, too.

@?BillinGlendaleCA: Since you have a phone number and can text it, I’m assuming it’s a cell. You have their name? Have you tried to do a records search on their name? Here in Florida, if it’s an absentee owner, the tax records show the name and address of the owner. If you run the tax records for the property you are renting, does it give their name and address? (For some unknown reason, tax assessors want to know where to go to collect their taxes.) Once you find the name and address, you could text them and ask if you could just mail a check there? You said they were new at this. Maybe they aren’t quite aware of how much is public.

@SWMBO: I’d rather not go there, I’d rather do above board.

@rikyrah: If you have or can get NordVPN ($3.xx per mo.) I can walk you through the steps to stream the BBC and ITV without haveing to subscribe to Britbox. Streaming also avoids having to pay for again all the programs that are on Netflix or Amazon Prime.

@mrmoshpotato: No, they apparently don’t. There’s a show called Brexitcast, which isn’t really comedy, but is occasionally funny, considering the subject matter.

@?BillinGlendaleCA:
I am in no way an expert on property law, but it sounds like they’re trying to hide their earnings from someone. The government? An ex-spouse? Outstanding creditors? Extended family members who’ll try to get their hands on “extra” funds? Some combination of the above?…
Understand why you don’t wanna (have to) move, but I’m glad you’re saving all your receipts! Can you archive all correspondence with them, too?

@Felixmoronia: I’m interested in this too, but will try it when less fraught. My tv costs are in the nosebleed seats.
