I had no idea this was happening in Chile (and, if you watch the video, which is well worth watching, around the world):
A Chilean protest song about rape culture and victim shaming has become a viral anthem for feminists around the world.
Un Violador en Tu Camino – A Rapist in Your Path – was first performed in late November as Chile’s nationwide uprising against social inequality pushed into its second month. […]
According to statistics compiled by the Chilean Network Against Violence Against Women, 42 cases of sexual abuse are reported each day to the police (approximately two every hour). In 2018, only 25.7% of sexual abuse cases resulted in judicial rulings.
“In the Chilean judicial system, stereotypes and biases harm women victims of sexual violence,” said Bárbara Sepúlveda Hales, spokeswoman for the feminist lawyer group Abofem. “In many trials, the life and sexual behavior of the victim is exposed as if it were a justification for the aggression they suffered.”
Again, via AOC’s twitter.

The second or third impeachment of Trump should be for sexual misconduct. There are plenty of witnesses.

I’m not exactly sure why, but that video made me all teary eyed…in a good way. Maybe it was the solidarity of those women?
Anyway, thank you!
Wow! ?

I heard about this on NPR, and hearing all of those female voices in unison calling out against sexual violence was so powerful. Thanks for posting the video.

India is on the verge of mass rioting because of the pervasive spread of rape gangs in that country. They’re setting fire to the victims as they go into the courtrooms to testify for God’s sake. >:(

Yeah, the situation in America regarding unprocessed rape kits is tragic and sad, but the attitude in much of the developing world is horrific. Blaming young girls for being set upon by old fart relatives or neighbors…
But the newly developed style of gang rape followed by immolation in India is so despicable and horrific I can’t stand to get anywhere near the details.
Unbelievable lack of humanity on the part of these gangs, and no doubt caused in part because of the odd cultural bias towards having male births and aborting females so as to have sons who will never be able to find a wife!
Thanks, parental generation for your stupidity in following that particular crazed cultural bias. Can’t have grandchildren without having girl babies! What a surprise…

@MagdaInBlack:
Knowing how rapists always have more victims, it’s great to see women banding together and throwing it back.

@MagdaInBlack:
so, 30 years ago an Incel murdering women at School because they were women bears no relevance to the post,
global protests still ongoing because Govenments are non-responsive to their needs for security from depredations by the State, aided and abettted by the state, or ignored by the State, have no relevance to the post,
got it,

Men hate women.
they hate their power, hate their perceived control over access to their bodies, hate their agency, their aspirations, their presence in the workplace, their achievements and successes, their ability to speak truth to power, their demand for equality, their strength and their softness, their competitiveness, their very presence in the public square, their ability to laugh at men, their right to choose.
men hate women.
not all men, but far too many.
women are sick and tired and fed up with this bullshit.

Yes, you managed to include one post that was barely adjacent to the OP. Did you honestly expect a cookie for it?

@Jay: Jay, a little commentary with your posted tweets would be helpful. Otherwise it can look like Twitter just overflowing into the B-J comment sections.

@laura: It’s funny, I grew up thinking my dad was a feminist because he encouraged (as much as either parent was capable of that) me to do and be what I wanted. I later figured out he wanted me to go into geology because it supported his ego (geology was adjacent to his career). He went fully wingnut not long after I graduated and he swallowed all of Rush’s feminazi crap, though he was sure Bircher-curious when we were kids (also related to his career as a mining engineer). He’d never say it to my face, but FOX and Rush have turned him into not necessarily someone who would flat out say that women “should stay in their place” to his daughters but he sure thinks it about every other woman out there but only if they aren’t an R like all his “lady friends” on FOX. Those are OK. Maddening.

There are whip-smart, good-hearted people like AOC out there. I wish they were in charge.
Litlebritdifrnt
@J R in WV:
Same thing happened in China when the one child per couple was introduced. Couples would abort girl babies or take them out into the woods when they were born. The ratio of males to females in the Cities was totally out of whack. The only place where all these guys could find wives was out in the farms because the one child policy didn’t apply to them and they needed as many kids as possible to work the farms. The males would go out marry the girls and take them back to the city, so the farmers would breed some more :) The Wifeless Men getting ever and ever more desperate are the reason that the policy was abandoned.

@Litlebritdifrnt: Women as cattle.
O. Felix Culpa
@Jay: Speaking as a woman and as a person who regularly reads yours posts, this particular string of tweets you posted in this particular thread felt like a hijacking – and yes, a rape – of the core topic. While one tweet was somewhat adjacent to the topic, the majority were not. It’s important and valid to alert people to injustices and issues around the world, but it’s also a fact of women’s lives that their experiences are erased by what men deem more important. While you presumably didn’t intend to erase or over-write a topic of particular concern to women, effectively that’s what you did. Maybe just think about it before unleashing a barrage of tweet-posts. Thank you.
Feathers
Jay – It’s not just that your tweets are off topic. (Do you seriously think the folks you are linking in the thread give a shit about violence against women?) It’s that you sent me to a TERF-y, racist, anti-Semitic, pro-Brexist shit fest. And I bet you weren’t paying enough attention to what you put up to notice, eh?
John Revolta
@Litlebritdifrnt: There are something like 50 million men in China now who have no chance of ever marrying or even getting a girlfriend. Population control is all well and good but this is a huge mess and should’ve been anticipated. :(
Feathers
@John Revolta: Part of the problem is that when fathers have daughters they may become more feminist, but in my experience, when women have sons they too often start to rep for the patriarchy on their behalf. Every problem is to be solved by girls being perfect and boys doing whatever they want, with a helping assist if needed.
Oh, and It was anticipated. There were articles at the time warning that this could provoke a global crisis when these babies came of age and had no wives. There also was a notion back then that when there were fewer available women they would become more valuable. Which may be happening in certain situations, but tragically what we find in many other places is that the patriarchy is doubling down on violent misogyny.

Poor Jay!
Someone else doesn’t think Jay’s posts of random tweets he likes is appropriate.
So Sad!
O. Felix Culpa
Relevant to issues around women’s bodies, someone recommended the Intersectionality Matters podcast yesterday (thank you!). I’m listening to episode 6 right now, which focuses on the lasting consequences of slavery, particularly for black women. These consequences include curbing of welfare, forced sterilization and mass incarceration. The discussion is both excellent and heartbreaking. Link to that podcast HERE.

Explaining Jay’s mistake: Still on topic.
Men using his mistake merely to insult him and renew past attacks:
Ignores the topic, just as he did. Derails the thread.
Or else, uses a thread about violence against women for your own purpose. Just as he did.
Sab
@J R in WV: The failure of American police to process rape kits is more than tragis and sad. It’s a serious dereliction of responsiblity by the police. Apparently they simple do not care about the safety of women in my city.
Rape is not all that rare here, but we have only one detective on the entire police force working rape cases, and she is due to retire in a couple of years without training a replacement.
When the Cleveland Plain Dealer ran their series on the rape kit neglect in Cleveland, my nearby city finally decided to process their rape kits. Turns out that we had two dozen serial rapists operating in a city of less than 200,000.
That’s nuts, but that is where we have been.
Sab
@MagdaInBlack: 45 minutes when nobody else made any comment at all. Jay wasn’t actually derailing anything at that point.
O. Felix Culpa
@Sab: I beg to differ. I think he was. People come into the discussions at different times during the day, especially on the weekends. I don’t look at the time stamp of comments when I begin to read a new post. I just take in the flow of the discussion and was stunned by what felt like a barrage of off-topic tweets almost immediately out of the gate, derailing the OP.

@Aleta: Thank you for saying this–I was afraid to point it out, but it makes me generally uncomfortable [and cautious about commenting because of snarly (not snarky) replies and piling on]. And @Feathers: makes a good point about the issue with Jay (whose ‘news’ notes I often enjoy) in this thread.
