Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Wake up. Grow up. Get in the fight.

Dear Washington Post, you are the darkness now.

Boeing: repeatedly making the case for high speed rail.

One of our two political parties is a cult whose leader admires Vladimir Putin.

No offense, but this thread hasn’t been about you for quite a while.

One lie, alone, tears the fabric of reality.

Whatever happens next week, the fight doesn’t end.

The unpunished coup was a training exercise.

It’s easy to sit in safety and prescribe what other people should be doing.

Why is it so hard for them to condemn hate?

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Today’s gop: why go just far enough when too far is right there?

It is not hopeless, and we are not helpless.

Yeah, with this crowd one never knows.

If you’re gonna whine, it’s time to resign!

Proof that we need a blogger ethics panel.

Prediction: the gop will rethink its strategy of boycotting future committees.

Let there be snark.

They are lying in pursuit of an agenda.

Putin must be throwing ketchup at the walls.

Sitting here in limbo waiting for the dice to roll

He really is that stupid.

He seems like a smart guy, but JFC, what a dick!

Republicans don’t lie to be believed, they lie to be repeated.

I am fortunate to have a small cave in my back yard. The cats like it too. Other animals use it – Ric found the remnants of a bird in it yesterday. Ric in green, Zooey in purple.

Just happy or animal stuff, please.

White Zooey with gray spots and purple harness stands on ledge above cave, looking down. Pinon tree to the right
White Ric with gray tail walking away from us toward the cave from below. Tree on the left is the same one as in the other photo.

I’m sitting with my 15 years young tuxedo cat in my lap and he’s purring loud enough to drown the sound of the furnace turning on.

Good news. We adopted a rescue cat last week. She is settling in just fine and seems extremely tolerant of the exuberant little humans in the house. Having a pet again is a much needed antidote.

I’m watching a pretty terrible pre-Code film and the most shocking thing about it is that Warren William’s hair is messed up.

@CarolDuhart2: You can get some idea from the photos. It’s about 3-4 feet deep, front to back at the deepest part, and is about 15 feet wide, under that ledge Zooey is standing on.

I just finished a batch of split pea soup in the Instant Pot, using some of the turkey stock I made earlier with the carcass of the Thanksgiving bird. It’s waiting for the pressure to release now. Never used turkey stock in this before, hoping for a deeper flavor.

    @Gin & Tonic:

I’ve made split pea soup in the Instant Pot, and I like it a lot.  My big trick is to use my favorite bacon seasoning in place of a ham hock.  The bacon seasoning is very cheap, since it’s made from the little pieces that can’t be turned into nice slices no matter how they fiddle with them, and it’s extremely flavorful.  Also, for Instant Pot split pea soup, I’ve been told it’s best to release the pressure with the valve rather than waiting for it to cool down; the rapid boiling when you release the pressure breaks up the peas and turns them into a nice puree without any further ado.

I know lamh has posted things from TLo, AKA Tom & Lorenzo, Fabulous and Opinionated, here before. They mostly write about celebrity fashion, TV and movies, but Tom Fitzgerald is a writer that can make you cry, and he has done a piece for the Philadelphia Inquirer about growing up gay during the AIDS crisis you won’t regret reading.

    His TLo piece about it.

    The Inquirer piece.

AIDS exploded into the public consciousness, promoting paranoia, fear, and suspicion of gay folks in the mid-1980s, at exactly the moment my teenage self realized he liked boys. Like so many queer people, my initial response to the realization of my gayness was one of despair and self-loathing, but because it happened concurrently with the explosion of AIDS cases, I also saw it — in my mind, quite indisputably — as a death sentence.

To be 13 years old at any time, for any person, is to live through a period of hormonal rushes and exciting but confusing new desires and developments. When I was 13, I became burdened with the dual thoughts that the thing I wanted most in the world would not only kill me but sentence my immortal soul to an eternity of torment.

AIDS kept me in the closet for an additional 15 years.

AIDS made me fear my own attractions and question my worth as well as the worth of potential friends, partners, or lovers.

And since I am such a longtime fanwoman of TLo, a plug for their book coming out next March, “Legendary Children: The First Decade of RuPaul’s Drag Race and the Last Century of Queer Life.”

We recently passed our first cativersary with our most recent pair of rescue meows. Our previous cat brothers were the most affectionate cats I had met up till then, but these two sisters might have them beat. Nearly every morning, it’s purr purr smooch smooch headbutt… and they almost always politely wait until we’ve woken up. Coming home after work, same deal. The smaller one is a tabby who’s missing a hind leg and nearly all of her tail, so she hops around looking a lot like a cat-rabbit, sometimes at fairly high speed. The other is a majestic black cat with a huge floofy tail; my wife calls her a goth squirrel. We love them to pieces, and as this is my first experience with adopting kittens instead of moving in with established cats, I’m almost a little scared of how attached I’ve gotten. We spent some time before that fostering a series of kittens, which is great [if you don’t mind a lot of diarrhea] but they always go away just as you’re getting to know them.
