The President has been impeached, and that is forever.
He was frivolous with the Constitution, the Senate should not be. #DefendOurDemocracy pic.twitter.com/dzp1gJSND6

A Black woman is delivering the articles of impeachment. For the white supremacist president. That’s all.

This isn’t just an impeachment trial—the very integrity of the United States Senate is on trial. pic.twitter.com/F1Qk4pCQS4

The same people who say Nancy Pelosi should’ve waited longer to begin impeachment proceedings so we could’ve found this stuff out are of of course pretending not to know that moving impeachment forward is what dislodged a lot of the stuff we’re finding out now.

Flashback to 1999 when William Rehnquist showed up to the Clinton impeachment bedecked with shiny gold special impeachment stripes.
Alas, no such flair from John Roberts today. pic.twitter.com/Wmn04nqZUK

(It’s not so much fun when they’ve got your boy in the spotlight, huh, Chief Justice?)
Nancy Pelosi referred to the evidence released on Tuesday regarding Lev Parnas, Rudy Giuliani’s old running buddy, who, Pelosi noted, "was recently photographed with the Republican leader." https://t.co/vLPBULHTxP
— Charles P. Pierce (@CharlesPPierce) January 15, 2020
Every new piece of evidence is shocking. I refuse to let this feel normal.
But Parnas just confirms what’s been clear for a while:
The President of the United States personally directed a conspiracy to use taxpayer dollars to destroy his political rivals and rig the election.

House managers will come to the Senate at noon tomorrow to present the articles of impeachment and Chief Justice Roberts will arrive at 2 p.m. to swear in the senators. The trial will begin in earnest on Tuesday.

(Gonna be a loooong weekend for the Oval Office Occupant’s handlers… )
One former Clinton impeachment manager told me about the immense pressure that they face in the Senate
“if I say anything stupid my grandkids are going to be watching it on the History Channel.”https://t.co/7u6GFIB2yu— Ben Jacobs (@Bencjacobs) January 16, 2020
Prediction: The Repubs are not gonna worry about saying anything stupid. Quite the contrary.

It’s possible Roberts, he of “balls and strikes,” is an improvement over Rehnquist, who was a self-absorbed dick. We can only hope.

But Mitch McConnell says this is not an impeachable offense. And Mitch McConnell is an honorable man.

Foregone conclusion that the Senate acquits. One of the main focuses of the 2020 campaign MUST emphasize that the GOP does not care about the rule of law. Maybe this won’t matter to most people, but I hope that it might away a few independents.
Jim, Foolish Literalist
apparently in the Very Stable Genius book, which I am probably going to get sucked into, there’s a story of an early meeting between trump and Pelosi, and Steve Bannon says “She’s an assassin” and recognizes she’s going to be trump’s Nemesis (capitalized in recognition of the Greek goddess who punished hubris).
I think it was before she was Speaker she laid out trump’s MO and why it doesn’t work on her. First he tries charm, then he tries bullying, and she’s immune to both. I think a lot of people get or got sucked in by the first and thought, eh, maybe he’s not so bad after all

@Brachiator: I wonder if Mitch would be Ok with my kidnapping him and holding him in a storage container until his term is up to rig his next bid for re-election?

I totally did miss this, and I feel like it’s somehow appropriate that I am listening to Mozart’s Requiem as I read it. Confutatis maledictis, motherfuckers.

@trollhattan: Lord, I’d forgotten what a malignant clown Rehnquist was. Good riddance to that bad rubbish.

@SenyorDave: I have a feeling, and I hope I’m not being deluded, that after the GOP acquits more and more evidence of malfeasance will surface, to the point that by the time the election does come around they lose in places they didn’t think possible (like maybe half those “solidly red” TX congressional districts that are opening up due to retirements)

I don’t know how I missed the inevitable Gilbert and Sullivan parody inspired by Trump’s stupid, aggrandizing description of himself, but it is worth savoring: Randy Rainbow Song parody

Gee, I wonder why Trump is so concerned about Bernie and the rigging of the primaries and seemingly cheerleading for Bernie to get the nomination? I wonder why???? It’s one of those unfathomable mysteries!

well as we discover more about what specifically took place, the article of impeachment notwithstanding. As I understand my civics, there’s absolutely nothing that would prevent additional articles being submitted for a new batch of different crimes, say for the violation of campaign finance laws that surrounded Trump paying off Stormy Daniels with campaign cash. Or any of the other crimes that have been well documented. Make Mitch run thru this dance over and over.
Betty Cracker
@Jim, Foolish Literalist: I’ve read a few excerpts of it in the WaPo too, and I was struck by how often Bannon uses assassination metaphors. He “jokingly” told Ty Cobb that he (Cobb) needed to shoot Ivanka and Jared in the head to get rid of them. (He also called Ivanka “dumb as a brick” — can’t disagree there.)
I was determined not to get sucked into that book either because I agree with what Mix said yesterday about the harm caused by the political book industry. But on the other hand, the only justice I expect out of this hideous Trump circus is private gloating about the low-quality hires’ humiliations and discomfort, so…

This type of question exasperates me. Hunter Biden was a 45 year old man when he was on the Board of Burisma. He is not a child and he is not Joe Biden’s property. Why would Joe Biden’s office have any bearing on Hunter Biden’s career path?
Under what theory does the NYT think that a law like this would pass constitutional muster, not to mention all the additional questions it brings up. Why just restrict it to board membership, why not bar any employment with a foreign company? What about children working for any company with business in of the US? Why restrict it to the children of the President or Vice President? What about senior members of the Senate? Or the Supreme Court?
I understand the need to ask questions about conflict of interest and corruption that access to power entails, but solutions like this indicate they’ve given no serious thought to how one would actually combat it.
