On the Road is a weekday feature spotlighting reader photo submissions.
From the exotic to the familiar, whether youâre traveling or in your own backyard, we would love to see the world through your eyes.
Good morning everyone,
A little midweek joy!
After seeing the moonrise from the Baldwin Hills, this morning we’ll see the sunset from Ascot Hills. Ascot Hills is east(technically northeast-east) of downtown LA near Cal State LA. If you drew a line(I did on Google Maps) between the Baldwin Hills and Mt. San Antonio where we saw the moonrise, it would cross the Ascot Hills. The Ascot Hills is two ridges with a valley between them. The east ridge is higher than the western ridge and there’s a reservoir at the northern end of the valley. A racetrack was at the southern end of the ridge to the west that was known for it’s high number of fatal crashes. The park is home to a fair amount of wildlife; I saw a rabbit, two coyotes and an owl.

A gate on the western edge of Ascot Hills Park frames the downtown LA skyline as the sun sets between a gap in the skyscrapers.

The setting sun casts it’s last light as it falls next to LA City Hall in this wide shot. Skyscrapers in West LA are visible at the right and buildings near LAX are at the right.

The setting sun lights up the high clouds over downtown LA.

The sun has set, but lights up the clouds in hues of red and orange.

The light of the sun fades and the light of downtown LA’s building spring to life.

The sun sets between two of LA’s tallest buildings, the US Bank tower and the Wilshire Grand.

The remaining light of the sun lights up the wester sky as the lights of the city begin to shine as a palm tree sets to the right. The bright light over downtown is the Goodyear blimp.

Bill, I didn’t know you were the cinematographer of the 1988 film, “Tequila Sunrise”
Baud
Sunrise, sunset. Sunrise, sunset.
Nice work.

@David ??Merry Christmas?? Koch: Thanks, I tend to avoid sunrises.
@Baud: Thanks, the Ascot Hills is a great location for January sunset pics.
JPL
Nice pictures.  It’s been a dreary couple of days so it nice to wake up to such a beautiful sunrise and sunset.

@JPL: Thanks, we’ve had sunny weather for the past 2 months(we need rain badly), so I’ve got more.

@p.a.: Thanks.

What an extraordinary set of photographs. Â Took my breath away.

I especially liked the one with the radio towers. I enjoy puzzles (especially the 15-second variety), and I initially couldn’t understand how structures could soar above the cityscape so.

@karensky:
Thanks, so did the hike up those hills?.
@Embra: From the eastern ridge you get the radio towers as well as a nice reflection from the lake(East Lake) in Lincoln Park.

Absolutely stunning! Never seen such amazing colours at sunset here on the eastern side of Aus. If I had to pick a favourite it would be the last one. What talent you have BillinGlendale.
PS: saw a house hunters renovation episode with a couple looking for a house in Glendale, immediately thought of you ?
