BREAKING: Tulsi Gabbard suspends her campaign and endorses Joe Biden. https://t.co/4TFk9JH5im pic.twitter.com/3WpZ9TOjAZ
— CBS News (@CBSNews) March 19, 2020
Our red buds in NoVA are starting to bud today.
And raven posted downstairs!
That’s about all I’ve got.
It’s a trap!
I honestly did not expect that of Tulsi
My wife made cookies. They’re wonderful. I’d share but social distancing…
And its raining in SoCal which remains bigger news than Covid, despite all of us being unable to go out.
Animal Crossing New Horizons comes out tomorrow. My daughter only needs to survive the next 8 hours and 20 minutes.
Goku (aka Amerikan Baka)
Has hell frozen over too?
Since I’m at home all the time now, I might foster some dogs.
We engineers are all trying to use our skills to help out. https://helpfulengineering.org/ – the slack is full of people coming together to help build masks, respiratory machine parts, new ways of doing respiratory machines from other sources.
All hands on deck. I joined merely to give money and help fund them.
our rich are completely detached.. they should be coming together and help pay for masks and what not? I thought private enterprise was sooo much more efficient in all this. Looks like our masters of the universe are not that great at helping society at large.
I went to my old hometown and took a hike that my dad and I used to often take. It’s a waterfall in a park that we used to hike in alot. I’d not been down there in 43 years.
I was able to order both dog food and hall’s lozenges online so that’s good. OH, and I purchased 24 vacuum cleaner bags and now and looking for a tutorial on how to convert them into masks. My good news kinda sucks doesn’t it.
Ok, how’s about this:
… has become unexpectedly convenient?
I want cookies, dammit!
Tulsi being more responsible than Bernie. Who coudanode.
At our house we are blessed to have a steady income so we’ve made a weekly schedule for take out from our favorite places.
It’ll be a change normally we eat out every couple weeks. Looking forward to some really good chocolate desserts.
Putin’s Congresswoman dropped out before Putin’s Senator?
I resisted watching Stephen Colbert’s Covid-related bits, but I watched his monologue where he’s sitting on his porch and it was really funny and really good. He hits just the right note — not mindlessly making light of it, but managing to be quite funny anyway, without a studio audience. It reminded me of his masterly performance in front of GWB at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, where he kept going despite the absence of laughter. He really is a master.
@Baud: do it. Though fair warning, that’s how I ended up with 8.
I was expecting Tulsi to endorse Covid-19.
@zhena gogolia: I’m just now listening and I can’t thank you enough for the link.
This made me laugh loudly enough to wake up the critters.
That last tweet sure woke me up!
My local CVS has something similar.
I’m taking tomorrow off to find wipes, paper towels, etc., and I bet none of the lines will be spaced correctly. ?
@Marcopolo: I’m planning on doing the same thing. Just bought lunch at one of my regular places (at 3:30. Sigh. Today was a bloody mess.) and am going to try to order dinner out twice a week or so.
The local government here is putting together a convenient directory of all places offering carry out or delivery, including places that didn’t usually do so. Might be worth checking if your area is doing something similar.
It was good, but are trees already blooming up there? I think there may not be a spring here this year.
OK, that’s it, I’m calling it. It’s a Ben and Jerry’s night and the store better not be sold out. I know store runs are supposed to be for emergency rations, but … Ben and Jerry’s should qualify, right?
Life’s too short (damn, that used to be kinda funny) for non-premium ice cream some nights.
Thanks, Martin’s wife.

Andrew Lloyd Webber has challenged Lin-Manuel Miranda to a play off.
Some fine country music right now on Twitch: https://www.twitch.tv/luckreunion
ETA: lead singer of Los Coast (missed his name) up now.
Yay I finished cleaning my house!
I started on the weekend. It usually takes a day with many breaks in between. Everything seems to take longer these days.
But I always feel good with a clean house.
And the kitties are fed
ETA: Also should have a big post up tomorrow on the Imperial College modeling study.
Lots of great bands are live-streaming on social media. Search up Parsonsfield on FB or IG and listen to some delightful live folk Music every afternoon!
Good news for me, my bi-weekly club level sailing race is on for this weekend. We’ve amended the Racing Rules of Sailing:
18.2(a) When two boats are overlapped, the outside boat shall give the inside boat social distance, unless rule 18.2(b) applies.
@zhena gogolia: Finished and I am so in love with him. That was emmy worthy.
Good news for my family: BIL, who is in ICU at Florida Hospital with lung infection just tested negative for COVID-19. So he is still in ICU, but not in air-borne isolation, so my sister can visit him.
We are all so relieved.
My excuse for not dusting is that I don’t want to disturb whatever viruses are all over my furniture. At least I’ll know they aren’t swirling around in the air.
Heh :-) 18.2(b) no doubt involves exchanging martini shakers and such. Wear gloves.

@Baud: Putin sees the value of his assets melting. Knows economy runs better under Democrats.
A friend of mine is taking requests for a song a day and on day one someone requested “the three leaf clover that could”. He composed the song that morning and recorded it that afternoon.
Thanks for the link. Will push some $$$ their way
NYT headline says that the Senate GOP plan includes ‘large corporate tax cuts’. Fuck those assholes. Their solution to everything is raining money upon big companies. I hope Nancy Smash laughs in their face and passes something before the Senate does.
Did someone say happy?
White & Gold Purgatorian
Did some digging in the garden this afternoon. Planted some spinach seeds. The lettuce is almost big enough to start harvesting (yay!) but the real happy news comes from the tomatoes: 3 of them are about to bloom! Yes, great big buds on the Juliet and both Whoppers and it’s only March 19. So happy. We may need that garden produce this year, unlike normal times when it is nice but not necessary.
Obama used to riff on tax cuts being the Republican solution to virtually everything. It was very funny and reminiscent of Chris Rock’s “put some Tussin on it!” routine.

In a similar vein, here’s Jimmy Fallon broadcasting from home, and a few minutes into the program interview Lin Manuel Miranda, from his home.

My dogs are certainly loving the lockdown. We play all day, every day.
@NotMax: such nice gams
At his press conference, Trump declined to promise that he would insist bailouts not be diverted to CEOs and their ilk or used for stock buybacks. We all know how this will turn out.
I must say I was surprised that he had dropped the “Chinese” from “Chinese Virus.” Someone got through to him.
@PsiFighter37: My plan for Senate Russthuglicans includes baseball bats to crotches.
(They’re not being used in the Majors.)
@Dorothy A. Winsor:
Did you forget the link?
I don’t have to put out my “You Can’t Spell Tulsi Gabbard without LGBT” signs.
Not exactly happy, but I was comforted by this post on Chuck Wendig’s blog: It’s Okay That You’re Not Okay
@Marcopolo: The plan here is twice a week to visit my local cafe for as long as it’s open. Still dining in for now but diners are seated far apart.
Ah, nice to see that again. How about this for happy?
Willie Nelson, Paul Simon and more to play free online concert tonight: Here’s how to watch it live.
Which park? I’m looking for a nice waterfall hike that isn’t insanely crowded like Eaton Canyon is.
@mrmoshpotato: college is suspended too; I call dibs on the Aluminum ones!
I’m working on some DIY guillotine plans.
@raven: NIce. I had a colicky baby who now is in his forties that loved Willie

Here’s a post someone left on my FB page today. I thought it was good.
Daily Quarantine Questions
Well, here’s happy: Graeter’s is staying open!
@zhena gogolia: Thanks for the pointer. He’s a great, great man.
@Poe Larity: I was just telling a friend about The Widow of St Pierre.
@JPL: Did you watch Burn’s “Country Music”? The Outlaw part was really good.
@Benw: Fine by me.
Back to the office first time since last week to check out my
shinyold, slow and tiny laptop and do some not-from-home stuff. Pretty empty, I should work there.
Then dared a Costco run and while the lot wasn’t packed the store was really busy. They were restocking the aisle that normally has TP so none to be had, even if they had it in store which I never verified. Got a few needed items and got the hell out. Not everything on the list, but it’s March 2020, yo.
Normally jammed midtown freeway was more like 2 a.m. Sunday. Everybody going 80.
Can hardly stand the excitement.
Spouse bought made-in-China “bamboo fiber” TP at the hippie coop. Don’t, if you don’t have to. In addition to the meager and rather rough roll it’s nearly an inch narrower than real ‘murican stuff. Next, I’ll probably discover we have bamboo sprouting in the sewer. By the willow.
Let’s peek in what the kewl college kids do.
@Poe Larity: Make sure you include some art, so you get full credit for Arts and Crafts.
@Scout211: Great news!
West of the Rockies
That must have been a weird experience… I’d guess 25% was familiar and the rest quite different.
@Mnemosyne: One of my neighbors did Eaton over the weekend. He said it was not nearly as crowded as usual.
A few things,
One, my efforts as a Teacher apparently have borne fruit. Several parents, many from my AP Government class have Emailed to say their kids miss me the most. Other parents from other classes too. It’s something that matters to most of us teachers. A lot.
Second, my kids are actually getting more outside time, we have a small yard and the enforced, “Go out an play” is pretty much a great thing, the weather is awesome the last week we’ve been out of school.
Third, I’m beyond grateful my 70 something parents are doing better than John’s in terms of hunkering down and accepting the new reality. It takes a burden off my mind.
Stay safe out there fellow jackals. This community is a good one.
Sister Golden Bear
Wise words from my friend, and fellow cynical Gen Xer, especially for younger folks:
Congrats! That kind of feedback from your students’ parents is awesome.
Sister Golden Bear
Also in personal happy news: Illinois elected its first transgender state official.
You think the willow would allow that? I would expect an epic beatdown of the bamboo. I mean, the bamboo would put up a good, pokey fight, but… Fuckin’ epic sewer battle!
I liked the entire series more than I thought I would. Especially since they only gave 15 minutes to the Spangly Period.
Let’s *make* it happy news! …My senior kitty Milo (working at his desk in April on the BJ calendar) just came home from his follow up visit at the vet. They gave him anti-nausea and antacid shots, sub-q fluids (and taught me how to do it, and supplies to take home to start), and though he is completely dopey and has that creepy fluids bulge, this is the first time he’s eaten like he’s hungry in more than a week, which is great news for his diabetes. We’ll take it!
Also great: just paged through the calendar to remind self which month he’s on for this note and am reminded how fabulous it is. Great work! And lovely pets, y’all!
Huh, never knew about Joan McCracken. Thanks!
@Sister Golden Bear:
Good. It’s been a difficult time for your community. Nice bit of news.
@Baud: That’s a nice thought. Not ready for anybody permanent yet?
Brad Paisley, huh?
Wait … isn’t he … wasn’t he … the guy in a Balloon Juice rotating tag once upon a time?
ETA: Like, he mentioned BJ on an episode of Prairie Home Companion or something?
Not “happy” news, but I am currently “in class” via Zoom conference software.
Teacher is droning on and I’m tired AF trying to pay attention. Which is much harder to do when the person teaching isn’t RIGHT in front of you.
@Scout211: What a relief!
@Sister Golden Bear: Yes! ?
@WaterGirl: Probably not.
Cats really do accept sub-q fluids more easily than you’d think. I think it makes them feel better quickly enough that they can make the association between the bag o’ fluids and feeling better. Good luck!
@Mnemosyne: Wildwood Park in TO, another waterfall a bit closer is Millard Falls above Altadena. I’ve not been to Millard, but the pics look nice.
Dorothy A. Winsor
Your students’ missing you is a great tribute to you. And it made me smile.
@Baud: You’re ready when you’re ready.
@West of the Rockies: I was surprised how much had NOT changed.
@Baud: Hey, you were in one of my dreams last week, but it wasn’t x-rated, so no one is probably interested in the details.
Probably took a few days of yelling at him that we need their expertise and production. He will backslide.
Good: found some tp for my GF’s 2 preschool grandkids, the ‘rents are running low, and a big pack of Ivory bar soap for me (the Alton Brown ‘how to wash your hands’ vid recommends it.)
Groceries and druggists should (taking their lives in hand I acknowledge) limit shoppers’ numbers. It’s really difficult to maintain social distance in a market aisle when there are people everywhere. Forget where I was but they were counting off to allow 25 in at a time.
PPV is going to cover my Trumpcession losses post haste.
My money’s on willow, but those bamboo shoots are awfully tasty.
I once had a dream that Cole invited us all over to his house for a giant sleepover. It was actually really fun even though some people had to sleep in the hallway in sleeping bags.
@?BillinGlendaleCA: Bad me, I didn’t mention the name of the falls in TO for Mnemo…Paradise Falls.
ETA: Another cool “waterfall” is Brown Mountain Dam on Arroyo Seco.
I made chocolate cake with chocolate chunks yesterday, and I have only had it 3 times so far, so I’m doing pretty good, right? I also have vanilla ice cream with it, but not much ice cream because it has to last.
@Mnemosyne: Back when Cole was still on the bottle, he did invite us all over.
@Mnemosyne: would he consider that dream, or nightmare?
Thanks! We’ll see how this weekend goes.
He has his frat kids over, so I think he doesn’t mind cooking for a crowd. He just doesn’t want people trying to make conversation all the damn time.
Ventured out to Costco today to make sure that we are well stocked with food supplies in the freezer and pantry. There was a line to get in as they only allow a small number of people in at one time, but I only had to wait about 15 minutes. No TP, sanitizer, paper products, wipes, etc. but I was just there for food anyways. My low-level anxiety is much improved now that I have meat in the deep freezer, a 25 pound bag of rice and many cans of Spam and sardines. It’s the little things… :)
I assume he’s in South Carolina.
Yes, I think so.
Oh, I’m glad. I hope he feels better soon.
One of my go-to rabbitholes on the internets is Lia Kim choreography videos.
Lia Kim: Ed Sheeran – Shape of You
Lia Kim: Starship – Nicki Manaj (Beginner’s Class)
Lots more. 96 videos in 1Million Dance Studio Playlist. La La Latch, This is What You Came For, Drunk in Love, Redbone, and Down are some of my faves. She dances first, sometime alone, and then it repeats with other dancers, IDK if students or teachers. BTW, beginners in this context means one clear move per beat of the music.
She’s Korean and her studio in Seoul seems to have reopened.
@raven: Good movie! Recalling conversations from some years ago, my candidates to replace Bogart and Bergman in Casablanca were Denzel and Juliette. And I don’t know if this exactly qualifies as good news, but–two of my favorite actors, Kristofer Hivju and Idris Elba, are apparently doing OK with isolation-at-home after being diagnosed with coronavirus.
@David ? ☘The Establishment☘? Koch:
I think he’s about to have some serious problems on his own hands, if reports from there are accurate, and I’m sure they are.
@zhena gogolia: What reports?
@Mary G: That made me laugh!
@Sister Golden Bear:
That’s really good.
Reports from my friend in Moscow. It’s happy thread, so I can’t go into detail. Pretty much like here, only with even worse hospitals and national leadership.
I am rethinking my support of Biden.
Gin & Tonic
@?BillinGlendaleCA: A bit far for you folks, but I was pleasantly surprised by Darwin Falls in Death Valley. It was the middle of July, IIRC, and Badwater was ~120, but that was a real nice oasis. And nobody there.
I think I’ve posted a pic or two from there, but right now I’m on the wrong machine to look for my photos.
Not good news for my Monday class! I’ll try not to drone on. I think it’s going to be a kind of Monty Python sketch.
He promised a woman Veep. Just saying.
Gin & Tonic
@zhena gogolia: Ukraine seems to have things reasonably under control. My son is ignoring the DoS advisory and staying in Kyiv, but he’s there until September-ish at least, and there are other complicating factors. Just means it will be a while before anyone from here visits him.
@Omnes Omnibus: I was perplexed at first, but I guess you’re rethinking because Tulsi endorsed him.
I went for nice walk in the woods along the river
@WaterGirl: “I kept driving on this neverending road lined with Baud! 2020! signs!”
Starting tomorrow at 12 EST and going through the weekend, a group of international musicians will be live-streaming from their Instagram accounts. There are Spanish, Scottish, and many others. It’s free, but there is a PayPal link to support the artists. More at https://stayathomefestival.com/
@Gin & Tonic:
I hope he’s well.
Two birds that made me smile:
@Mary G: LOL Cute.
Baudma Shave signs?
@Omnes Omnibus: You cheeseheads haven’t had your primary yet.
@David ? ☘The Establishment☘? Koch: Has anyone seen Pootiee-Poot live recently? Maybe one of his once-loyal goons shoved a potato down his throat, and he’s intuberated…
@Gin & Tonic: I’ve been wanting to go back to Death Valley and Madame has never been and wants to go, the problem is our girls(4 legged kind).
@mrmoshpotato: You know what’s sad? I have already forgotten the dream. I remembered it when I woke up, but all I remember now is that it was sweet.
indeed. Apparently Brad Paisley did a similar streaming show earlier, and Benjamin Gibbard of Death Cab for Cutie is doing one at 7:00 Eastern tomorrow.
I ain’t happy…
@Benw: I want one of the ones with railroad spikes driven through the barrel end.
@Baud: If I were a conspiracy theorist, I would say Hillary very efficiently destroyed Tulsi’s ability to serve as a 3rd Party spoiler, and so she decided (was ordered?) to make nice with the mainstream Democratic Party in order to preserve her viability in the future.
Gin & Tonic
@?BillinGlendaleCA: Doggie day care?
@Citizen Alan: Hillary never mentioned names. Tulsi just decided on her own, “Hillary’s calling me Kremlin trash!”
@WaterGirl: Well, yeah. But I’ve been talked down. Somehow endorsing Biden is vital to the next stage in her grift and does not reflect poorly on Biden qua Biden.
@Walker:”I honestly did not expect that of Tulsi”
Me neither. Maybe the COVID19 response finally convinced her.
Biden crushing Wilmer now makes me happy.
I’m also tempted to sign up for Twitter – to call Kyle a whiny-ass baby bitch.
@mrmoshpotato: “Putin’s Congresswoman dropped out before Putin’s Senator?
Putin’s president still ruling and running in 2020.
@delk: “I don’t have to put out my “You Can’t Spell Tulsi Gabbard without LGBT” signs.”
Her father was a local politician here and a vicious homophobe.
@Citizen Alan: “@Baud: If I were a conspiracy theorist, I would say Hillary very efficiently destroyed Tulsi’s ability to serve as a 3rd Party spoiler, and so she decided (was ordered?) to make nice with the mainstream Democratic Party in order to preserve her viability in the future.”
That’s a good assessment.
@Arclite: True. Putin’s orange bitch is still in, instead of fleeing the country, but the fewer Russki ratfuckers the better.
I was undecided, waiting to see who Tulsi Gabbard would endorse.
@Matt Smith: hahahahaha
I got some things :)
I’m doing more music streams, techno and ambient jams, and a guy named Colin Benders who’s much more famous than me has also returned to music streaming! You might check out his youtube stuff if you like synthesis.
Also, I have an unorthodox approach to apocalypse. If I think ‘what happens if my bank goes bust and the money is all gone’, I might respond ‘what tool did I always wish I had, that I never got, and now I technically could and still have something of a buffer financially?’ And the answer to that is, a Wacom Cintiq. Art tablet/monitor thing. So I will be trying to do visual arts and animation, hopefully it’ll work out for me. Also 3D stuff in Blender, which can also use a screen/tablet and it’s supposed to be so much better that it’ll be really interesting.
The Cintiq takes some getting used to, but the picture is GLORIOUS. Which I guess of course it is, that’s the whole point. And it’s so much closer than I usually use a screen, that I gotta use my reading glasses :)
@Mnemosyne: —and, too soon for good news. :(
Just had a low blood sugar crash. Shoved a bunch of honey in his mouth and then he ate a bunch of his own food on his own, so will wait and see for a few minutes before choosing whether or not to go to the *emergency* vet for follow up to the follow up. Because of course the vet who just saw him is closed now; new shorter hours during these times. Arrrrrrrrrrrgh.
A Ghost To Most
Thanks to AL, I’m sitting here with a brass sheet and a dapping block, banging out a comic death’s head for my new door decoration.
Wut?Tulsi endorsed Biden? I am tempted to check Rose Twitter and Reddit just to watch the meltdown.
Going to be that teacher in a week. Not happy about it but what am I gonna do?
She senses what the winning team will be in November, and it ain’t gonna be the one the Russians picked.
Ugh — good luck! Feline diabetes can be hard to manage, but hopefully you’ll both get the hang of it.

Add Sen. Kelly Loeffler (R-Greed) to the list of roycohnicans who dumped stock.
Tucker Carlson currently throwing GOP Senator Burr under the bus for his insider trading after receiving a classified briefing on the real threat posted by the coronavirus.
They get it. They know they’re not going to survive this unless they go all-in on day-is-night, the GOP-is-the-party-that’s-always-been-on-top-of-this. Sorry, Burr!
Loeffler (who did the same thing) will be next.
Just received word a friend’s husband received a liver transplant- very happy news!
I think in 2024 the Democratic party should have the superdelegates vote before the primaries to determine who is going to be an official Democratic candidate that is eligible to receive delegates. Anyone who doesn’t get 5% of the votes or finishes outside the top 6 or something like that doesn’t get any delegates. No further vanity runs by billionaires or foreign assets.
Can we get a thread on Burr/Loeffler/Inhofe soon, plz mods? Thanks!
Roadie brother the elder works for a bass player who did a couple of duets with Brad Paisley for a cancer fundraiser in the San Francisco bay area a year ago. Thought he was a super swell fella and musician. I’d request the song they rehearsed:
“First Kiss, First Love, First Cousin.”
@Jeffro: I want Burr’s head on a pike, and will not be deterred in that desire even if Tucker Carlson agrees.
@hueyplong: Bonus: North Carolina has a Democratic governor.
IIRC, when Cole & Paisley were both teens, Brad used to play his guitar at Cole Senior’s Elderhostel weekends. Cuz Paisley was another professor’s kid (at a different college) although he didn’t exactly advertise that bio during his early years in the country-music biz…
There’s already been one downstairs from this, went up at 5:30pm.
Jim, Foolish Literalist
@Anne Laurie: how about just an open thread? there are very many things going on
@Sister Rail Gun of Warm Humanitarianism:
Thank you for this. Went on Lloyd Webber’s Twitter feed,.he is playing songs??
Tucker Carlson is calling on Burr to resign. Didn’t see that coming.
Another Republican senator, Loeffler of Georgia, has been found apparently trading on inside information.
My youngest daughter works at the local University in a management position. Last week one of her workers came back from a vacation from China and said she had the flu there that she recovered from before coming back. She called in sick the next day saying the flu came back. Today my daughter said she is now going to work from home starting tomorrow. I have another daughter working at student accounts there. The provost has not shut down the entire school. Students are still living in the dorms. News now from another daughter living in CA. She is trying to see if she has to go to work. She is in the medical/technical field at a hospital.The governor just announced a massive shut down of the state. If I drank, I would need a drink now.
@HRA: I’m sure you are beside yourself. I wish there was something I could do to help. Waiting is hard.
@WaterGirl: Thank you! CA daughter just sent a photo of tanks coming into her mountain area from San Diego.
Jim, Foolish Literalist
@HRA: That’s shocking.
@Jim, Foolish Literalist: Done — look up top for your chance to jeer at Tucker Carlson…
@HRA: Others in the Anne Laurie Dubious Conversation thread are hoping for more information about the photo of the tanks.
If you’re still around, maybe you can think about popping into that thread?
This is seriously cute.
