Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

A snarling mass of vitriolic jackals

Wow, you are pre-disappointed. How surprising.

The revolution will be supervised.

Proof that we need a blogger ethics panel.

JFC, are there no editors left at that goddamn rag?

Whatever happens next week, the fight doesn’t end.

Nancy smash is sick of your bullshit.

New McCarthy, same old McCarthyism.

Optimism opens the door to great things.

Republicans are the party of chaos and catastrophe.

White supremacy is terrorism.

Fuck the extremist election deniers. What’s money for if not for keeping them out of office?

Russian mouthpiece, go fuck yourself.

Imperialist aggressors must be defeated, or the whole world loses.

We are aware of all internet traditions.

I’d like to think you all would remain faithful to me if i ever tried to have some of you killed.

It may be funny to you motherfucker, but it’s not funny to me.

Not all heroes wear capes.

Black Jesus loves a paper trail.

You can’t attract Republican voters. You can only out organize them.

Second rate reporter says what?

And we’re all out of bubblegum.

“Can i answer the question? No you can not!”

Authoritarian republicans are opposed to freedom for the rest of us.

We engineers are all trying to use our skills to help out.  https://helpfulengineering.org/ – the slack is full of people coming together to help build masks, respiratory machine parts, new ways of doing respiratory machines from other sources.

All hands on deck. I joined merely to give money and help fund them.

our rich are completely detached.. they should be coming together and help pay for masks and what  not? I thought private enterprise was sooo much more efficient in all this. Looks like our masters of the universe are not that great at helping society at large.

I resisted watching Stephen Colbert’s Covid-related bits, but I watched his monologue where he’s sitting on his porch and it was really funny and really good. He hits just the right note — not mindlessly making light of it, but managing to be quite funny anyway, without a studio audience. It reminded me of his masterly performance in front of GWB at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, where he kept going despite the absence of laughter. He really is a master.

The lettuce is almost big enough to start harvesting (yay!) but the real happy news comes from the tomatoes: 3 of them are about to bloom! Yes, great big buds on the Juliet and both Whoppers and it’s only March 19. So happy. We may need that garden produce this year, unlike normal times when it is nice but not necessary.

Not exactly happy, but I was comforted by this post on Chuck Wendig’s blog: It’s Okay That You’re Not Okay

Shit’s fucked up. It just is. As I noted yesterday, it’s as if we’re witnessing the ghost of normalcy rather than normalcy itself — it died so fast, it hasn’t yet left this plane of existence, and so it lingers, refusing to be banished until an exorcism finally sends it packing. These are abnormal, bizarre, confounding, dipshitted, batshitted, extraordinarily fucked-up times.

You don’t have to be okay with that.

You probably shouldn’t be okay with that.

More to the point, you also don’t need to do it all. You don’t need to get it all done. You don’t need to clean your house from top to bottom. You don’t need to homeschool your kids into super-geniuses. You don’t need to write King Fucking Lear or discover a new scientific principle. You don’t need to be happy. We’re all in mourning from the death of normalcy. We’re all knocked off balance, like someone just kicked your bike as you were riding it. You ended up in the ditch. We’re all in the ditch with you. It’s okay to just sit here in the ditch for a while and say, “Fuck.” It’s okay to wait before you stretch, before you stand up with a groan and see what’s broken. It’s okay to sit on your couch and gorge on bad TV. It’s okay to read a shitty book. It’s okay to not finish the shitty book. It’s okay to let your kids be kids and just tell them they’re on spring break right now. You don’t need to be an A+ parent, and they don’t need to be A+ kids, and you don’t need to be an A+ spouse. Christ, you don’t even need to be an A+ human. Aim for B, maybe B-, C+, just hold it the fuck together.

Forgive it in yourself and forgive it in those around you, too.

Back to the office first time since last week to check out my shinyold, slow and tiny laptop and do some not-from-home stuff. Pretty empty, I should work there.

Then dared a Costco run and while the lot wasn’t packed the store was really busy. They were restocking the aisle that normally has TP so none to be had, even if they had it in store which I never verified. Got a few needed items and got the hell out. Not everything on the list, but it’s March 2020, yo.

Normally jammed midtown freeway was more like 2 a.m. Sunday. Everybody going 80.

    Can hardly stand the excitement.

Spouse bought made-in-China “bamboo fiber” TP at the hippie coop. Don’t, if you don’t have to. In addition to the meager and rather rough roll it’s nearly an inch narrower than real ‘murican stuff. Next, I’ll probably discover we have bamboo sprouting in the sewer. By the willow.

    A few things,

One, my efforts as a Teacher apparently have borne fruit. Several parents, many from my AP Government class have Emailed to say their kids miss me the most.   Other parents from other classes too. It’s something that matters to most of us teachers.  A lot.

Second, my kids are actually getting more outside time, we have a small yard and the enforced, “Go out an play” is pretty much a great thing, the weather is awesome the last week we’ve been out of school.

Third,  I’m beyond grateful my 70 something parents are doing better than John’s in terms of hunkering down and accepting the new reality.   It takes a burden off my mind.

Stay safe out there fellow jackals.  This community is a good one.

Wise words from my friend, and fellow cynical Gen Xer, especially for younger folks:

i’ve lived through the AIDS crisis and 9/11, blackouts and hurricanes and a kidnapping and none of those things prepared me for this.

so this is just to say, to the younger people who are freaking out: no one is prepared for this. it’s not because you’re young. it’s because there is and was no plan in place….

i am not the one who can lighten the mood by any means but i am here if you don’t want to freak other people out about how gloomy and despondent you are. you will not freak me out with your pessimism or fear. these are my normals.

a new normal will emerge, but these first days are a period of adjustment to change none of us wanted.

we’re all making this up as we go. your core of self reliance, your ability to appreciate beauty, your love of the small things – all of these are muscles and this will strengthen those. lean into the growth, even into the fear. you are more than you know.

    March 19, 2020 at 7:50 pm

Let’s *make* it happy news! …My senior kitty Milo (working at his desk in April on the BJ calendar) just came home from his follow up visit at the vet. They gave him anti-nausea and antacid shots, sub-q fluids (and taught me how to do it, and supplies to take home to start), and though he is completely dopey and has that creepy fluids bulge, this is the first time he’s eaten like he’s hungry in more than a week, which is great news for his diabetes. We’ll take it!

Also great: just paged through the calendar to remind self which month he’s on for this note and am reminded how fabulous it is. Great work! And lovely pets, y’all!

The key statement at issue—“she’s a Russian asset”—which does not mention either Rep. The pronoun “she,” in context, is logically read as referring to Jill Stein, who is identified as the subject in the preceding sentence.

I’m doing more music streams, techno and ambient jams, and a guy named Colin Benders who’s much more famous than me has also returned to music streaming! You might check out his youtube stuff if you like synthesis.

Also, I have an unorthodox approach to apocalypse. If I think ‘what happens if my bank goes bust and the money is all gone’, I might respond ‘what tool did I always wish I had, that I never got, and now I technically could and still have something of a buffer financially?’ And the answer to that is, a Wacom Cintiq. Art tablet/monitor thing. So I will be trying to do visual arts and animation, hopefully it’ll work out for me. Also 3D stuff in Blender, which can also use a screen/tablet and it’s supposed to be so much better that it’ll be really interesting.

The Cintiq takes some getting used to, but the picture is GLORIOUS. Which I guess of course it is, that’s the whole point. And it’s so much closer than I usually use a screen, that I gotta use my reading glasses :)

Not “happy” news, but I am currently “in class” via Zoom conference software.Teacher is droning on and I’m tired AF trying to pay attention.  Which is much harder to do when the person teaching isn’t RIGHT in front of you.

Going to be that teacher in a week. Not happy about it but what am I gonna do?

SACRAMENTO (KABC) — California health officials predict that about 56% of the state’s population — 25.5 million people — will be infected with the novel coronavirus within the next eight weeks, Gov. Gavin Newsom said in a letter to President Donald Trump.

The letter, dated March 18, echoes a phone conversation with Trump on Tuesday in which Newsom formally requested that the Navy’s USNS Mercy, the largest hospital ship in the world, be deployed to California.

Tucker Carlson currently throwing GOP Senator Burr under the bus for his insider trading after receiving a classified briefing on the real threat posted by the coronavirus.

    WOW.

They get it.  They know they’re not going to survive this unless they go all-in on day-is-night, the GOP-is-the-party-that’s-always-been-on-top-of-this.  Sorry, Burr!

Loeffler (who did the same thing) will be next.

I think in 2024 the Democratic party should have the superdelegates vote before the primaries to determine who is going to be an official Democratic candidate that is eligible to receive delegates. Anyone who doesn’t get 5% of the votes or finishes outside the top 6 or something like that doesn’t get any delegates. No further vanity runs by billionaires or foreign assets.

Roadie brother the elder works for a bass player who did a couple of duets with Brad Paisley for a cancer fundraiser in the San Francisco bay area a year ago. Thought he was a super swell fella and musician. I’d  request the song they rehearsed:

“First Kiss, First Love, First Cousin.”

IIRC, when Cole & Paisley were both teens, Brad used to play his guitar at Cole Senior’s Elderhostel weekends.  Cuz Paisley was another professor’s kid (at a different college) although he didn’t exactly advertise that bio during his early years in the country-music biz…

Tucker Carlson is calling on Burr to resign. Didn’t see that coming.

Another Republican senator, Loeffler of Georgia, has been found apparently trading on inside information.

My youngest daughter works at the local University in a management position. Last week one of her workers came back from a vacation from China and said she had the flu there that she recovered from before coming back. She called in sick the next day saying the flu came back. Today my daughter said she is now going to work from home starting tomorrow. I have another daughter working at student accounts there. The provost has not shut down the entire school. Students are still living in the dorms. News now from another daughter living in CA. She is trying to see if she has to go to work. She is in the medical/technical field at a hospital. The governor just announced a massive shut down of the state. If I drank, I would need a drink now.

Our 5 year old seems to have deemed himself the local virus warden.

Over the fence to our neighbour:

‘JEAN YOU NEED TO GO INSIDE’
‘Okay I will in a minute’
    ‘YOU’RE OLD AND THERE’S A VIRUS’
‘I’m not that old thank you’
    ‘HOW OLD ARE YOU JEAN?’
    ‘I’m 68.’
    ‘THAT IS NEARLY 70 JEAN.’
    — Adam Bedford (@adambedders)

I am hearing that in the “I’m sorry, Dave, I can’t do that” voice from 2001.
