Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

There is no compromise when it comes to body autonomy. You either have it or you do not.

Wow, I can’t imagine what it was like to comment in morse code.

Make the republican party small enough to drown in a bathtub.

If you voted for Trump, you don’t get to speak about ethics, morals, or rule of law.

Baby steps, because the Republican Party is full of angry babies.

The poor and middle-class pay taxes, the rich pay accountants, the wealthy pay politicians.

Keep the Immigrants and deport the fascists!

Celebrate the fucking wins.

Bad people in a position to do bad things will do bad things because they are bad people. End of story.

Putting aside our relentless self-interest because the moral imperative is crystal clear.

Relentless negativity is not a sign that you are more realistic.

Come on, man.

Of course you can have champagne before noon. That’s why orange juice was invented.

When you’re in more danger from the IDF than from Russian shelling, that’s really bad.

I would try pessimism, but it probably wouldn’t work.

New McCarthy, same old McCarthyism.

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

… gradually, and then suddenly.

The desire to stay informed is directly at odds with the need to not be constantly enraged.

These days, even the boring Republicans are nuts.

White supremacy is terrorism.

You cannot love your country only when you win.

My wife and I took a long walk together a few days ago.  Usually we’ll walk for a half hour or maybe 45 minutes.  This time we walked for two hours, all over the neighborhood and up and down a long trail.

We had our masks, but many of the people we encountered were barefaced.  Plenty of distancing, though.

While on the trail, two young women jogged by, no masks.  We crossed over to the other side of the trail as they passed and one girl told us “thank you”

OT – Something has apparently changed here (or with Chrome) in the last day or so.  Or with the way tweets are embedded?

Videos in Tweets no longer play inside the B-J page any more.  “The media could not be played.”

If I click on the tweet itself, a tab opens and I can play the video fine.

It’s only happened to me in the last day or so – but it happens with every tweet with a video.

Chrome on MBP (Catalina 10.15.4) with uBlock Origin.  (Turning off uBlock Origin makes no difference.)

    FWIW.

    Cheers,

I try to get out a couple of times for long walks over the weekends.  Today was Too Damned Hot.  Tomorrow will be a little cooler; maybe then.

My neighbors/friends who have a place in Ocean Shores keep asking if I want to spend a few days there.  Which I do, but they’ve been in and out of the house every week, so probably not a good idea.  Also, the beaches there are closed. (At least, I think they are, but if they’re part of the state park system they might have re-opened by now.)

If there’s anybody here who’s really into physical culture, who has suggestions for ways to work the lats, I’d love to hear your thoughts.  Some constraints:

    (1) no place that’s safe to hang a pullup bar (old house, old/old/old wood, honestly, I’d be afraid I’d damage something)

    (2) can’t do dips (shoulder operations)

    So …. any advice appreciated.

Hrmmm this counts as respite for me, because I’m a twisted human being, but I’m celebrating a benchmark in my de-lurkerization today!!! I’ve been following B-J and LGM since 2006, but never bothered commenting until last year, when I was like, eh, fuckit, I think I’m mature enough to laugh at idiots insulting me, I can handle this internet shit. That has never been tested… until today!!! By an LGM commenter who called me an “over-educated prig”!!! And whose reply to my post was “look who I’m related to!” and implying that he’s more Chinese than me!!! I know I’m overusing exclamation marks, but I’m still laughing my ass off!!! (I don’t think he comments here, BUT I’M HAPPY TO BE PROVEN WRONG)

Anyway, if you are similarly inclined, please join me in a toast to being aware of all internet traditions!!!

@Chetan Murthy: I’m not, but having already slacked off from the gym before this all hit, I’ve started to realize I’m going to atrophy into a puddle if I don’t figure something out.

After a morning spent getting sticker shock over dumbbells, I decided to go with resistance bands as being able to support most of the immediate exercise needs. I’m pretty sure that there are resistance band routines for most upper body workouts. Not sure about the lower body, but I also ordered a foldable rowing machine that looks like it might work out well.

Space was also an issue, and both of these look like they won’t have huge storage demands.

Exercise has consisted mostly of running outside and doing lots of indoor cardio exercise. If going by weight, I am doing pretty well – I have lost 20 pounds over the past 3 months and am below the weight I ran my marathons at – but my upper body strength has definitely been shot. Holding my 8 month-old (crazy how time flies) definitely makes my arms sore. Unfortunately, I do not think there is anything I can meaningfully do until I have access to a gym…I have a set of dumbbells, but it’s just not enough to make a dent.

@Chetan Murthy: my knowledge of “physical culture” only goes so far as Jazzercise classes, but dumbbells and/or resistance bands is the first thing that comes to mind. Otherwise, and this is if you don’t care about toned muscles, I find that pumping and swinging my arms around while doing a dance-cardio routine ensures that I’m working the muscles there. There are also strength routines where you squat while stretching your arms out to the sides and doing quick rotations, but I don’t know if that fits your bill…

    @Jim, Foolish Literalist: Dunno.

    MayoClinic:

What are the risks of sitting too much?

Answer From Edward R. Laskowski, M.D.
When you sit, you use less energy than you do when you stand or move. Research has linked sitting for long periods of time with a number of health concerns. They include obesity and a cluster of conditions — increased blood pressure, high blood sugar, excess body fat around the waist and abnormal cholesterol levels — that make up metabolic syndrome. Too much sitting overall and prolonged periods of sitting also seem to increase the risk of death from cardiovascular disease and cancer.

Any extended sitting — such as at a desk, behind a wheel or in front of a screen — can be harmful. An analysis of 13 studies of sitting time and activity levels found that those who sat for more than eight hours a day with no physical activity had a risk of dying similar to the risks of dying posed by obesity and smoking. However, unlike some other studies, this analysis of data from more than 1 million people found that 60 to 75 minutes of moderately intense physical activity a day countered the effects of too much sitting. Another study found that sitting time contributed little to mortality for people who were most active.

    […]

    ;-)

Another bit of exercise that might be worth considering is the humble jump-rope. When my J was in college and ran every day and had a resting pulse rate of about 35 (seriously), she would often spend an hour jumping rope, too. (She was a bit insane about exercising back then!)

I’ve been thinking about getting a modern one – it might take some searching around to find a good one for < $35 or so (the cheapest ones on Amazon make me nervous).

    Cheers,
    Scott.

@WaterGirl: My Catalina upgrade on this machine was months ago.

(As I understand it, the main change with Catalina was finally getting rid of 32-bit app support, but that’s not an issue here.)

(The videos in the tweets play fine if started directly from a tab with just the tweet – they just don’t play within the B-J tab, so that wouldn’t seem to be indicative of an OS issue either.)

    Thanks.  :-)

    Cheers,

I don’t have a prescient bone in my body but I took up video fitness over 2 decades ago. Prior to that, I went to studio classes but my job got more demanding and I found it stressful to get out of the office and to the classes in traffic and/or inclement weather, also getting exercise clothes in the bag in the morning. So I have tons of DVDs, all with variations, cardio, weight work, yoga, etc. Dumbells from 2 to 20s and a barbell, lots of bands.  It’s an everyday habit for me, but 45 minutes to an hour and I’m good. Walking and cycling I like to go longer because I love being outside.

None of this makes me any less susceptible to the Rona or any more or less likely to have a poor outcome. I’m an old and have plenty of not so good habits (thank dog).

I was shocked when I weighed this morning and discovered that I’ve actually lost eight pounds in the past several weeks. Some of it is just anxiety, I think. I live in NYC and don’t go out much at all these days because I find wearing a mask so uncomfortable, and I miss walking.

But I march/run in place while watching TV, and log 16-20K steps on the Fitbit most days. It keeps the anxiety at a manageable level and apparently burns off the popcorn and ice cream I’ve been eating too much of.

Don’t rely on me, though, one factor at play was watching a series of shows where the protagonist must deal with the whole spectrum of difficulties the guys from the other show had to deal with just with different accents and flavors but still tinged with the same story arc.

@HumboldtBlue: You set your expectations too high.  The first two seasons of the Medicis were fine.  The actors were better looking than the historical people, everything was far cleaner than a Renaissance Italian city would have been, and they weren’t speaking Italian for some reason, but other than that they were fine as historical soap operas as opposed to history.

@different-church-lady: In pre-COVID-19 days I would also pick up a cart left in the parking lot, I don’t do that now.

@Jim, Foolish Literalist: I bet a lot of people would be like, “Hey, I can buy a shopping cart for only a quarter? Quick honey, help me load this thing in the SUV!”

    @Omnes Omnibus:

Again, the costumes change, the setting is different the voices are varied and somehow there’s a rape, a fire, a resurgence, a double-fire-rape, a calm, an awkward pregnant pause and then a halting step forward and BAM! Here come the fucking DANES/CELTS/SLAVS/TURKS!!!

Somehow they never show the fleas.

@PsiFighter37: You have an 8-month old – why do you need weights? They like to be curled and dead lifted and snatched :-)

Seriously there are of course YouTubes on this

    1. @?BillinGlendaleCA:

I don’t either. The cart retrievers return the carts and hose them down with disinfectant. I’m worried if I return them, they might not get disinfected.

    @Another Scott:

My Linux laptop running Firefox latest version does that too.

I do have some security stuff tighter than some people, but I don’t mind clicking on the twits to see funny pet videos…

    @different-church-lady:

Re, Cole’s shopping cart tweet: Not only do I return my cart, but when I’m going into the store I grab a misplaced cart out of the parking lot and take it in with me so that the cart guy has one lousy cart less to have to push inside.

I used to be like that, but now at Kroger’s they have a process of bringing the carts into the cart storage space, and disinfecting them pretty throughly with a spray disinfectant. Plus, wife pointed out, taking your cart back is like stealing work from the union workers who would otherwise be doing that work on the clock. Same as self-checkout.

And I see that lots of folks want to let the store staff disinfect the carts! Good!!
