Happy Mother’s Day (Open Thread)

If my mom were still around, I’d text her this photo of a Great Blue Heron I took this morning because she also loved birds:

Happy Mother's Day

A joyous Mother’s Day to those who are celebrating, and may the day land gently otherwise.

The mister and I did a contact-free drive-by to gift his excellent mom with virus-free veggies from our garden. We talked for a while from 10 feet or so apart. She told us there’s unrest in her 55-plus community because the HOA reopened some of the recreational facilities to residents so they can exercise but prohibited the resumption of league play.

One resident (who definitely voted for Donald Trump) compared these restrictions to Nazi Germany in a Facebook rant and posted a picture of the community clubhouse with swastikas Photoshopped on it. Attorneys were allegedly contacted. First they came for the pickleball league…

Anything fun or otherwise noteworthy happening today? My husband is making his grandma’s famous cinnamon roast chicken, so I’ve got that going for me. It’s a cloudy day with mild temperatures, so that’s nice too.

I asked Alice before I went shopping on Friday what she wanted for Mother’s Day dinner. So I’m making bacon cheeseburgers. It’s part of my “bar food you can’t get anymore” series. The Buffalo wings and nachos went well, hopeful these will, too.

so they opened the gym (sounds like a bad idea already) but aren’t allowing… what sports? trying to resist an agist pickle-ball joke here (being only just barely too young to move into this community) but what the hell do people want to do? work up a sweat and breathe hard and get close to each other in the middle of a pandemic transmitted by droplets of saliva (as this very much non-scientist understands

I have to say, one thing that has surprised me during the last several months is how many Americans have been revealed by their behavior to — like the current Oval Office Occupant — have an emotional makeup similar to that of a dim 10-year-old.

I mean, Godwin’s Law and all, but really?  Nazi Germany?  And by someone in a community of older folks, who are the most at risk?  Wow.

Happy Mother’s Day to all!  I made my 92-year-old mom some beef bourguignon (Julia Child’s recipe) and brownies, dropped them off, and waved to her from a distance.   I really wanted to give her a hug, but it was not to be.  My mom is the best!  I’ll do a group call with my daughters this evening.   Hubby asked what I want for dinner and after pondering a bit, I settled on Korean cauliflower, known around here as “cauliflower crack”.   Deep fried crispy cauliflower florets with a sweet and spicy gochujang-based sauce. And we happen to have a head of cauliflower in the fridge. I had to go to the liquor store to  get vodka for the batter (makes it extra crispy) and picked up a nice Italian red while I was there.  We’re all set!

On another note, we are having the most amazing weather today.  It was cold (41F) this morning, but now it is warm, but not hot, and sunny.   I think this spring is about the best one I’ve experienced here (Atlanta area) since moving here 30+ years ago.

My mother has passed on, but I used to love the way she would send Mr WayofCats a present on his birthday. Him being new to the family, he didn’t know her — eccentric — approach to gift giving, so he would sit there for a bit, package on his knees, getting ready to open it.

@debbie: My husband makes the cinnamon chicken, but having seen the process over the years, I can report that he melts butter with garlic cloves, combines it with olive oil and rubs that all over the chicken, then seasons it with salt, pepper and cinnamon. The accompanying veggies (potatoes and carrots) that go around the chicken in the roasting pan get the same treatment. So good! He says it’s important not to overdo the cinnamon (which would be how I’d screw it up). Just takes a sprinkling.

    Happy Mother’s Day to all.

I’ve always wondered why some people always have to look on the dark side of life. Sure it’s not like there isn’t a lot of company, nor like there isn’t a lot to see if it weren’t just a bit brighter. But they always have to be put upon by everything in the world. Their world is tiny, a little box they put themselves in. And because it’s a tiny, tiny world they live in, almost every word or event can be taken as hurting them in some way. I wonder if it’s because they only see darkness, a lack of, well life itself, that they can only see the bullshit side of life. Really we aren’t here for all that long, even though some days it feels like such a long time ago when one couldn’t barely dress themselves and everything was new, and most likely mom was the light of your life. My ship docked at Antwerp one time and Sunday an older gentlemen came by and offered a walking tour of the city. It was amazing, at one point we ended up at Rubin’s house, now a museum. Only 3 or 4 of us took him up on his walk. It was a great day, but they missed an amazing day because they couldn’t see the bigger picture, the better side. We have positive and negative numbers, and we need them, why do we need positive and negative people? Is that just nature as well?

Was Peter Daou ever a smart or insightful person? This morning he tweeted

The fact that a generic Democrat isn’t 30 points ahead of Trump in EVERY state demonstrates the abject failure of the Democratic Party to distinguish itself from the GOP.

It’s like he has no familiarity with American voters, particularly white American voters. In a reply, I suggested he had gone insane. Based on the replies to my tweet, he is not alone in his delusions about the appeal of lefty policies among ignorant, hateful bigot voters. They remind me of the narodniks – lefty intellectuals who preached revolution to Russia’s peasants. The villagers attacked them or turned them in to the Tsar’s secret police.

maybe the best solo tourist experience I ever had was in Canterbury Cathedral, I walked through, looking at all the things I was supposed to look at, was at the last stop before the exit– Becket’s tomb, as I recall, but it’s been more than thirty years and I unfortunately have never been back–when a little old man (probably not much older than I am now, he typed ruefully) started explaining the iconography to me, unprompted. He took me by the arm and led me back through the tour I had kind of mindlessly wandered through, pointing things out, explaining things, it was like a private tour. I was trying to figure out how to offer to buy him a drink in thanks (socially awkward, even then), when he said, “Well, I’ll leave you to it, then”, patted my arm and walked away.

Mothers Day and birthday all wrapped in one! Note: this is not how I envisioned spending a birthday weekend, particularly since I am now officially an old. Of course, I can’t envision myself being an old, either, but needs must – eyeing little girls with bad intent, indeed. It is rainy, windy and chilly outside so I am waiting for bread dough to rise, hanging out with family (spousal and daughter units plus cats) and perusing recipes for baby back ribs. Have sufficient Stubb’s Bar-B-Q Rub and the ribs are going on the grill if I have to bring the grill into the garage, with garage door open to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning of course. Of course, I haven’t checked the latest White House advice – I suppose it’s possible that carbon monoxide is now being recommended as a cure for covid-19…

With the oven still out of commission (which will remain the case until I get the kitchen renovated, hopefully in early June), I’ve had to do most things on the stovetop–today it was parsnips from the farm share, with carrots, onions, garlic, honey, and two Penzey’s spice mixes (Bombay and Sate). The waffle iron still works, though, and it turns out to be a good way to use sourdough discard (my starter has been getting fed more as a result, and is Very Happy with me). I’ve been subbing high-fiber stuff for some of the flour (oat bran, oats) and doing mix-ins; today it was a bunch of dried fruit (cranberries, oranges, some KAF baker’s blend), which will use up things that I will then not have to pack up in prep for the reno AND will provide food from the freezer. I’m trying to decide if I have the energy to microwave the purple potatoes and make gnocchi, which also can go in the freezer.

That article about what’s risky, how risky it is, etc from the earlier thread this morning is super helpful. I’m guessing the reason they didn’t want league play would have been to limit exposure that would happen if people are traveling to and from the locations.

The key equation is Infection = Time of exposure x Intensity of exposure

So being outside by definition limits intensity, and being outside while moving limits both factors. But sitting in a car/short bus with others for however long is a bad idea.

I don’t think I’ll be going to a restaurant or flying anywhere until there’s a vaccine. And I dread the idea of having to enter a hospital.

On a completely different subject, I heard one of the Obama bros talking the other day about election stuff. He said that a mistake Romney made in 2012 was running against the Obama pictured in right wing media and not the Obama that most people saw — a decent guy who was doing his best. He said that there’s a danger involved in running against the trump we all can plainly see and not against the one that many millions of our fellow citizens see.

They still believe he’s a crackerjack businessman with an unfortunate “style” that’s kind of gross. They think he’s basically fine and has been the victim of a lot of unfair and overblown hit jobs. (I know.) I’m trying to keep that in mind when it comes to tone … as in:

Happy Mother’s Day! I would love to say I’m celebrating by indulging in something other than Gin and Low-Cal Tonics later, but thanks to the “COVID Quarantine 10” I won’t be indulging in too much decadent stuff today. This week I start back on a pause on alcohol, clean eating, and daily vigorous exercise, yes sir by golly.

Hubby called his 80+ Mom in PA this am. I’ve written here before about she and his Dad are lifelong Republicans who voted for Trump, etc  ( have lots of conflicting values with what the party has been and certainly is now, which has been so perplexing and disappointing to us) and of the stressful family trauma Trump has caused between he and his parents and his brother’s family. (His two sisters are Dems, for some blessed reason) So we–by mutual agreement– haven’t been talking politics with his parents for quite a while.

Hubby will call a couple of times a month and report Fox news playing in the background, which they leave on all day for sound wallpaper one presumes. Even so, we have sensed they may not be as enchanted with him as they were at first, however, mostly gleaned from what they say about other stuff that wouldn’t jive with them still being full blown Trump Cultists. They certainly are taking these COVID precautions seriously and absolutely don’t believe it’s a fricking hoax, which is a relief.

Anyway, Mom, after her standard listing off of her normal litany of old and new health complaints and local gossip suddenly veered into what has been off limits territory for years right in the middle of aa completely unrelated conversation and blurted out “Oh, What do you think about Biden?”.

Husband yanked phone away from his ear and looked at it and me with a “Oh my fucking God no she’s not gonna start this shit up is she?”. I mouthed “Don’t answer her, change the subject”. But he couldn’t resist.

He responded “Well, he wasn’t our first choice but I think he’s great, that’s what I think. He’s gonna save the country.” But given the massive amount of hurt feelings and disruption from some 2016-2017 convos, that’s as far as he went.

Completely out of character, all she replied was: “Really? You like Biden? [pause] I was so disappointed in him when he did that plagiarizing thing. But you know, looking back to when I used to write a lot of things I think I might have plagiarized a thing or two by not saying something I wrote was a quote from someone specifically…” Then she started talking about herself again like all pleasantly dingy early vascular dementia folks do.

We’re both taking it as a sign of hope that she didn’t respond with any of her previous pro-Trump shit.

    Happy Mother’s Day!

In a different focus group, IIRC an Obama voter in FL who stayed home in ’16 said she would probably stay home again in 2020, cause all politicians are the same. She was a single mother of an autistic son, both depending on Medicaid.

All this to please Party donors and the Right-Libertarian backbenchers who infest the Commons. Profit over People, as per usual, and when it all goes Pete Tong somewhere around the end of May it’ll be blamed on the feckless Public for not ‘staying alert’ to the microscopic mugger.

Speaking of moms and kids, we are currently enjoying (ok, not really enjoying) being serenaded by the bird family that has taken up residence in a vent on the side of our house.  We are hoping their little ones will fly the next within the next week or so, so that I can clean out the vent and get it properly closed/screened.  But in the meantime their near-constant screeching and flapping around is making life interesting.

Happy Mother’s Day, all! ? I’m missing my kids, though they’ve called.

Got to work later, at the damned grocery store. Yesterday was an absolute nightmare, way way too many people ignoring all social distancing, shopping in packs. I had a minor meltdown at one point; I looked around the self-checkout area I was minding, and each of the six machines had 3 or 4 people at it, all in their teens or young 20’s. Put on my best mom voice and said “ Only one person per machine!! Whoever’s not paying needs to leave! “ There was eye-rolling and muttering, but they did it.

    I’m so tired of people.

In the case of my local builders because work had dried up as nobody wanted them in their homes and in the case of a local factory because their supply chain was disrupted and they couldn’t get the raw materials. I don’t think that’s going to change in the short term.

That’s what you use to “grease” a bowl or a pan for baking. Put that sheen of butter – that’s left on the paper – to good use!

I’m a slovenly old guy, but when I grease a pan going into the over, I either use butter and my fingers to smear it all around for sweet things like pie or cake, OR I use a liquid like EV Olive Oil for casserole like potatoes au gratin etc. No paper needed, just a clean hand.

My mom was an angel, my cousins (who had an imperious mother) remember her as a source of maternal love. Wife also too.

@WaterGirl: I love this one because it doesn’t need a springform pan OR a waterbath! Makes just the right size for two people in quarantine :)

    Easy Pie Pan Cheesecake

Make a graham cracker crust in a 9 inch pie pan, and pre-bake for crispy. I find it even easier to mash butter with almond flour, spread evenly, and let that sit in the oven while it pre-heats to 325 degrees.

    • 2 packages 8 oz cream cheese, softened in the microwave
    • 2/3 cup sugar (or other granular sweetener; I use 1/4 cup monkfruit/erythritol mix since I always add fruit)
    • 3 eggs
    • 1/2 cup sour cream
    • 1/4 tsp. vanilla extract
    • 1/2 – 1 cup chopped fruit, chocolate chips, etc

Beat all ingredients until good and smooth. I do it by hand.
Pour into pie pan. Bake at 325 for 50 mins. Cool to room temperature. Then refrigerate overnight.
Optional topping (after cake cools for 20 minutes)
    1 cup sour cream
    1 tsp vanilla
    3 tablespoons sweetener
Mix and spoon on top of “crust”
Bake another 15 minutes at 325. Now cool and refrigerate.

My sour dough starter is all awesome now! Lots of bubbles, it is thriving. Which of course means I’m going to have to dump it. In the end, it’s stressing me out. I don’t make any bread, I don’t eat any bread, and I’m just wasting flour that others can use.
I think I’ll just amke a bunch of loaves and call it good.
This reminds me of the whole garden thing where I spent all summer growing tomatoes and they all ended up rotting in the fridge because I couldn’t figure out what to do with them because it was late September and I didn’t feel like having tomatoes.

@WaterGirl: My mom died when I was young, so I always had issues with Mothers’ Day (even though it was started by a woman who’s mother had died, so really, should have been perfect for me).  Now, I tend to look at it as the day I call my aunt (who stepped in for SO many things after my mom died) and my stepmom, who, despite how much head-butting we did when I was growing up, is a most excellent person.  I kind of forget that I fall under the title, too. :)

I am feeling very pleased about getting my aunt a good Mothers’ Day gift (she’s hard to buy for)- I sent a care package via Goldbelly, which is an aggregator of restaurants all over the country.  She and my uncle like BBQ, so I was able to send them a pork sampler from North Carolina  (to Pennsylvania).  She mentioned the thing that’s hardest on her during this pandemic is waking up every day and thinking, “What am I going to cook today?” and so FedEx dropping off a solution to that problem for the next 3 days was a great surprise.  I think one of the differences between being a kid and an adult is as a kid you like getting good gifts and as an adult you like giving good ones.

We were able to converse meaningfully right to the end, and she was spared the worst part of final lingering that many suffer. Missing her today, I cannot but feel thankful that her final illness is not taking place now. This epidemic must make hospice care as we have known it impossible.

we are currently enjoying (ok, not really enjoying) being serenaded by the bird family that has taken up residence in a vent on the side of our house.

Our first or second full summer in the (then new) house we live in, we heard strange noises coming from the fireplace in our bedroom — pretty quickly we learned it was a nesting pair of chimney swifts who had built a nest and laid eggs on the smoke shelf. They couldn’t get out into the actual bedroom because the damper was closed.

Once the eggs hatched, there was an all day commotion in there, and it went on for a very long time, because the parents have to feed the young birbs until they develop enough to fly nearly 20 feet straight up the flue. As soon as they were gone, we found a pro chimney sweep to clean thing up, there was a least one dead mummified birb, and a ton of bird waste. We also put big ventilated screens on all the flues to prevent a re-occurance of the”blessed” event.

Regarding the quarantine situation… I’ve been going to Kroger’s every 2-3 weeks, But then the tree fell, which meant a trip to the roofing warehouse, a visit from a friend to help patch things, people coming to review the damage and prepare estimates, and eventually there will be removal and replacement of the ceiling in the guest bedroom and reconstruction of a small knee wall that was crushed above the front door.

This makes it hard to maintain the degree of separation we would prefer. Dammit all to heck!!!

True, but this is the seal of approval for forcing staff back to the workplace when it’s clearly not safe. All the guff about ‘Covid-19 appropriate social distancing guidelines’ is just that, guff. shoulder-slipping the responsibility from Government to the private sector. But the Government have said people have to go back to work, so it’ll be a race to see which is more ruinous to the economy – the spiralling infection rate once people are forced back into the workplace or the tidal-wave of litigation brought under H&S in the workplace legislation by the infected and/or their families. The cynic in me thinks that’s going to get ‘solved’ by the Tories taking a post-Brexit axe to said legislation, all in the name of ‘saving the economy’, natch.

And yeah, the “Well we said people should avoid public transport, didn’t we?” dodge is typical Tory-bubble bullshit. Surely everyone has at least a company car? Yah? Can’t they just toss a few thousand on a zippy little runaround? Don’t they want to help the econony?

I guess one thing this has done is that it is teaching all of us a lesson that we are not top predators that nature will find a way to reveal you and you must still bow down to the queen.

That said, I think this virus is nature’s way to tap down on global warming. We are only doing a fraction of the green house gases we were doing before.

Happy Mother’s Day! It’s been a lovely one for me. Daughter came over to chat and bake homemade strawberry pie with scratch crust. We Zoomed my mom who lives two states over — still independent at 88 years old. Then daughter whipped up a batch of Italian pretzels — who knew there was such a thing? It has been wonderful that she still lives nearby. She and her boyfriend are being careful with their outside contacts so they can still come and see us older folks. After she left, I went for a walk outside — beautiful day here. And that’s why I’m so late to the thread!

cain: don’t pancakes freeze? Put wax paper between them and you can pull out a couple for breakfast each day.

And 9/10ths of it is Liberals saying how wonderful Obama was compared to Trump.  I’ve noticed a trend lately in hashtags being taken over by the people mocking the hashtag, until that’s the only reason the hashtag is still going.

I couldn’t say, but if I had to hazard a guess I’d say Cole’s light touch and willingness to allow genuine debate/shitflinging/venting has attracted a diverse mix that basically runs itself. Without that commitment to letting people be people along with the general misanthropy and shocking record of ‘hilarious’ accidents, somewhere like this just couldn’t exist.

“An elementary school teacher who tells him that she really supports him and prays for him asks him to stop being a bully and stop rambling and to let go of his negative behaviors. Trump replies by saying he’s been treated worse than Abraham Lincoln. I am not making this up.”

I don’t see going after Obama as a winning strategy.  Trump’s base hates Obaba, but Democrats love him and most independents seem to generally have a decent amount f respect for him.  And if he pushes the Obama is corrupt narrative the comparison to himself looks pretty absurd to all but his base.

@WereBear: I’ve been looking for you in a live thread. Some time ago I posted about my housemates’ cat Gizmo being diagnosed with lung cancer. They helped her pass on Good Friday. Later that month was one of my housemates’ birthday. Since they are talking about eventually getting another cat, I gave her your book.

Gizmo was a very easy cat, never climbed on the counters or scratched the furniture. They (and I) might not get so lucky next time.
