Another Friday Night Massacre

It’s Friday after hours, so President Donald Trump has fired another Inspector General. This one, for the Department of State, apparently was investigating Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

Trump is destroying our democracy. Intentionally. Methodically. This is nothing less than authoritarian overtures to increase his power. I can tell you of other countries who have done the same in history. It didn't end well for them or their country.

Pay attention America. https://t.co/0mqh2ZfcXd

House Foreign Affairs chair @RepEliotEngel: “I have learned that the Office of the Inspector General had opened an investigation into Sec. Pompeo. Mr. Linick’s firing amid such a probe strongly suggests that this is an unlawful act of retaliation.” https://t.co/lwhSMvmMZM pic.twitter.com/QrBPqCqMJf

The late-night, weekend firing of State Department IG Steve Linick is an acceleration of the President’s dangerous pattern of retaliation against the patriotic public servants charged with conducting oversight on behalf of the American people. https://t.co/VavmuJpX25

When’s the next time they need to vote on ANY appropriation, for ANY part of the government, that benefits Trump’s supporters, or even a larger part of the general public?  Cut it off!  Issue conditions, and if they’re not met, cut it off!  Who’s the public gonna blame?  Whom did they blame for the last shutdown? (HINT: IT WAS TRUMP)  Use the damn power of the purse! (You sure haven’t got very far with your investigations or subpoenas — wonder why…)  Kick him where it hurts!

Honestly, I despair of the Democratic Party sometimes …

There were all sorts of accusations about Pompeo and his wife’s misuse of government resources — to include planes —during his time at Langley. So this seems far from surprising. Only now is Trump brazen enough to axe an IG to try to make it go away. t.co/pl0nPYLa2A t.co/ODQFQ9d6pW

    @bbleh:

What does it take for them actually to DO something instead of sputtering and flapping their hands?

The actual power to do so.  It’s pretty damn hard to stop Trump when you have one half of one of three branches of government.  She has seriously slowed things down, but she can’t chuck him out without McConnell’s cooperation, which is not ever going to happen.

When’s the next time they need to vote on ANY appropriation, for ANY part of the government? Cut it off! Issue conditions, and if they’re not met, cut it off!

This sounds great, but is not practical.  It will do even more damage to the country than COVID is doing now, for… what?  What exactly?  Non-binding agreements?  What is McConnell going to be willing to pass that would significantly restrain Trump?  So what it will actually do is create a government shutdown that will cause incredible suffering, Democrats will be blamed for, and will destroy our very likely chance of fixing things in November.  In return we would get nothing.  Nothing at all.

Sorry, there is no simple solution here, and clapping louder will not fix anything.

The sacking of these IGs could “just” be that they were getting too close to uncomfortable truths, but if I put on my conspiracy hat, I think his team is planning ahead. There may be more use for having flunkies in key oversight positions going forward. It’s taken 3 years, but Trump has gotten his people in some key positions like the DOJ, USPS, DNI, Senate. plus the IGs he’s canned.

    Warning Politico:

A Democratic congressional aide said Linick had launched an investigation into Pompeo’s alleged misuse of a political appointee to perform personal tasks for him and Mrs. Pompeo. The State Department did not respond to an inquiry about the allegation.

Linick played a minor role in the House of Representatives’ impeachment proceedings against Trump, ferrying a trove of documents to lawmakers that had been provided to the State Department by Rudy Giuliani, the president’s personal lawyer.

    […]

Two of Linick’s most-read reports over the past year involved alleged retaliation by Trump political appointees against career employees.

@Anathema Device: N M  may be referring to the effort McConnell is making to persuade Pompeo to run for the Kansa Senate seat held by retiring Pat Roberts. The Democrats have a good candidate in state senator Barbara Bollier, while the Republicans have a 3 way primary that may be won by Kris Kobach. Kobach lost Democrat Laura Kelly in the 2018 governor’s race. Kansas hasn’t elected a Democrat to the Senate since 1932, but McConnell is worried.                                                        I think Pompeo is looking at a 2024 presidential run, and may figure that he’s better positioned out of the Senate.

The answer is OBVIOUS. As second-in-line for the Presidency, the Speaker can issue a proclamation that the Murderer-in-Chief is unfit for office, and therefore shall be dismissed, to await trial for Doing Stuff Intended to Destroy a Functioning American Government (“DSIDFAG”). The Constitution explicitly allows it — it’s in Article XI.

Although I like bbleh’s idea about making sure the budget goes out of its way to harm Red States, because that’s how the Demon-rats roll. Or something.

I think the idea of investigations, leading to another one, two, or ten impeachments, is also a winner. I firmly believe that Mitch McConnell will see the number of investigations, and say to himself “Well, they seem to be really serious about this, maybe it’s time to rethink my opposition.” And I’m sure Suzy Collins will be right there with him, because she’s a “moderate.”

    And so forth …

NO, it isn’t. The US constitution only has VII articles. Also Amendment XI is very brief and excludes the federal court system from being used to sue states, saying nothing about replacing a president.
