Of course Nancy Pelosi is right where she and the Goddess intended her to be, but let’s take some time away from the Inevitable Ugliness(es) to discuss Biden’s potential partner.

Right now, assuming she wants the job, Kamala Harris is my personal favorite — she’s ready, she’s tested, and she’ll drive the Squatter-in-Chief even further out of his nasty rotted little mind. My favorite senator Elizabeth Warren, I get the feeling, is salivating at the chance to head up the Democratic Senate rooting out corruption the minute Lord Smallgloves (and, it can only be hoped, #MoscowMitch) flee DC (possibly for dachas in the glorious motherland, where Vlad the Interferer can better keep an eye on them). To which I say: You go, Liz!

But Biden has any number of excellent options, including no doubt some that we’re not yet aware of…

Excellent read from Jonathan Capeheart, in the Washington Post — “Biden has four great options for a black female running mate. One is his best”:

… Biden knows how important it is to have an empowered governing partner who commands respect inside and outside the White House. That’s who he was as vice president to former president Barack Obama, and Biden is right to want the same for himself.

Before I list some popular choices, let me obliterate an argument that has cropped up in response to my first post. When folks say that whomever Biden selects should be the most qualified or that “identity politics only gets you so far,” they should be aware of how that hits the African American ear. Since Jim Crow, such sentiments have been used to question our abilities and snuff out our ambitions. No matter how brilliant we are, we are never brilliant enough in a world that still believes someone not straight or white or male (usually all three) is inherently unqualified for any role, let alone being a heartbeat away from the presidency.

The four black women most often mentioned as a possible Biden running mate defy that racist notion. They are worthy of the speculation…

A member of the Democratic Party, she has served as the U.S. Representative since 2011 for Alabama’s 7th congressional district, which includes most of the Black Belt, as well as most of the predominantly black portions of Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, and Montgomery. Alongside U.S. Senator Doug Jones, Sewell is one of two Democrats in Alabama’s congressional delegation. A native of Selma, Sewell is a graduate of Princeton University, Harvard Law School, and Oxford University. Before entering politics, she was a securities lawyer for Davis Polk & Wardwell. She is the first African-American woman to have been elected to Congress from Alabama, and, along with Republican Martha Roby, was one of the first women elected to Congress from Alabama in a regular election…

    I’m wondering if Duckworth will have an eligibility issue. She was born in Thailand to at least one non-citizen. It would be fun and she would slay, but I could see that challenge being upheld.

    Of course I’m still all in for Kamala. She’s got the largest national footprint right now and yes she would drive Dolt45 completely meschugnah. And she would DESTROY Pence. If he makes it that far.

    I just want a VP who will be electable on their own when Biden is ready to retire, though I freely admit I have no instincts when it comes to identifying “electability.”

    I didn’t think Obama as a black man had a chance, I thought Hillary was a shoo in against Trump, and Biden a nonstarter among the many other contenders crowding the debate stages.

    I think there’s been a Duckworth in military service in every American War since the Revolution. Her Senate opponent stepped on his… tongue on that point.

    During a televised debate on October 27, 2016, Duckworth talked about her ancestors’ past service in the United States military. Kirk responded, “I’d forgotten that your parents came all the way from Thailand to serve George Washington.” The comment led to the Human Rights Campaign withdrawing their endorsement of Kirk and switching it to Duckworth, stating his comments were “deeply offensive and racist.”

    As I recall Kirk tried to pivot to moderate as that election got closer. I can’t remember which big vote(s) he broke rank on.

    Duckworth’s father was born in America — IIRC, someone with many generations of honorable military service behind him, & in the military when Tammy was born.

    If John McCain was qualified, then so is Tammy Duckworth.

    I was convinced by Michael Cohen at the Boston Globe last week that Kamala Harris is the best choice but Duckworth is right there. But Harris doing the bad cop during the campaign and coordinating the WH effort at beginning the cleanup while Warren sharpens her pencils for some oversight work in the senate with Duckworth is tasty.

    And in the spirit of comity and blogger ethics, let me share this lovely interview between two Scousers.

    Trent Alexander-Arnold, 21, (who obviously must struggle to get the attention of young women and I hope he one day gets a date) plays for Liverpool FC and is one of the finest players in the world and is a native of the city.

    He surprised Scouser taxi driver Tony Cavener, a man who has asthma but who has spent the quarantine delivering care packages to the needy.

    Human beings can still be warm, loving and beautiful.

    Didn’t say ‘voluntary’ would be part of the equation.  I’m open to possibility that Putin would give his loyal servants a choice between moving to Russia, or having a tragic ‘accident’.

    Not that either of those two have much to offer an American (or Hague) prosecutor, but leaving them free to run their little mouths would be… untidy.  I am told that President Putin does not care for untidy!

    COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina Democratic Rep. Jim Clyburn expressed “amazement” that Sens. Kamala Harris and Cory Booker have not had “more of a surge” in his state at this point in the race, referring to early polls that show the two black senators trailing far behind former Vice President Joe Biden.

    During an interview in Washington this week with NBC News, Clyburn assessed the state of the Democratic primary race ahead of 22 of the 24 presidential hopefuls barreling into his home state Friday for South Carolina’s Democratic convention and Clyburn’s own “World Famous Fish Fry” event that night.

    The state boasts a massive African American voting bloc — in 2016, black voters made up more than 60 percent of the Democratic electorate — meaning campaigns must work to woo voters of color to succeed here.

    Booker and Harris have “been a little bit of amazement to me as well, because I thought for sure that there would be much more of a surge and I can’t quite figure that out yet,” Clyburn said.

    Of Harris, he offered that she “hasn’t spelled out the policy stuff with her vision” — vision that he praised as “tremendous.”

    “Of course, I just thought Kamala because this just seemed to be the year of the black woman. I thought she would be surging a little more than she is,” the third-ranking House Democrat said.

    About Booker, on the other hand, Clyburn said, “I think he is suffering from the shadows, coming out from under the shadows of Barack Obama.”

    But another man carrying the mantle of the Obama administration is the former president’s number two: Joe Biden. Clyburn shrugged off complaints from one local Democrat, Bakari Sellers, who accused him this week of breaking his own pledge to not endorse anyone in the primary by “tacitly endorsing” Biden.

    “I don’t pay attention to that stuff,” Clyburn said, noting that he’s “pretty close to 12 of these people” and co-sponsoring legislation with several. “So you don’t walk away from your friends because you don’t want somebody to criticize you for what you might say about them,” he said.

    In explaining Biden’s strong lead in South Carolina, Clyburn — who spoke to NBC before the former VP talked about working with segregationist senators earlier this week — chalked it up to the former vice president’s “long history” in the state. Biden gave eulogies for senators from both parties in recent years, and has spent years building relationships in the state.

    “So, it doesn’t surprise me — that’s what I said — if he got into the race, everybody would also be running for second place. That’s just a fact,” Clyburn stated.

    I received an invitation the other day for a fundraiser for Joe Biden moderated by Tammy Duckworth and Whoopi Goldberg taking place on May 28.  Details would come after sending the RSVP.  Special guests included Sheryl Crow, Joe Walsh (I assume the guitarist, not Senator Duckworth’s former opponent), David Crosby, and Rufus Wainwright.  Don’t know if that means anything about possible VP selections.  Sen. Duckworth is very popular in my house (my wife is from Thailand).

    I like Harris and she has no purple state issues. I like Duckworth. I do think the RWNJs will make her out to be a ‘red Chinese woman’  because that’s what they do. At the same time the Dems were never going to get those votes anyway.  I also think NM Gov Michelle Lujan Grisham, Nev Sens Catherine Cortez Masto and Jacky Rosen are worth a look. They’re around 60 so they’d be good for 2024. I know Hispanic GOTV has never worked that well but maybe this is the year. Maybe Disaster Donny has woken people up to the importance of voting.

    I’d like to see the net cast beyond women who ran for the presidential nomination and women who’ve served as high level, elected officials.  Specifically, I’d like to see both Susan Rice and Sally Yates seriously considered.
