A term I never wanted to need…
Today I learned the German word "Krawalltouristen", which literally means "riot tourists."
— Tentin Quarantino (@agraybee) May 30, 2020
I was in St. Paul for the RNC in 2008 and the people who smashed windows, etc. were all mayhem tourists.

Silver-plate (tinfoil?) lining, for once the mantra BOTH SIDES seems to be true: The milky-pale anarcho-kiddies and wannabe-antifa are working in concert dissonance with the bent cops, Threepers, and grab-bag white supremacists to destroy minority communities in the name of FREEEDUMB!!!

If you cant stop yourself from weedling into every legitimate protest to act out a toddler's version of your ideology, the best thing you can do to advance the causes you're hijacking is to jump out of a plane and vandalize your parachute

Attorney General Barr says violent protests are being driven by far left extremists. But the Minnesota governor says he suspects white supremacists are fueling some of the violence.

As I’ve been saying: I lived in that neighborhood, & that crowd “protesting” is very different from the residents of that neighborhood. https://t.co/FfghTjrvny

We’ve seen this in South Africa before. Beware of agitators and instigators who use legitimate protests to ignite chaos between protestors and police.
— Trevor Noah (@Trevornoah) May 30, 2020
Speaking of which:
is this a strongman slyly calling for a pro-regime mob to mass at his mansion’s gates against aggrieved citizens exercising rights of speech and assembly? that’s what correspondents might reasonably ask were it outside usa— this bountiful, free, egalitarian, democratic land. https://t.co/0N02mL486y
— C.J. Chivers (@cjchivers) May 30, 2020
Or, hear me out, a bunch of white jackasses co-opted a spontaneous uproar among black people, made it last beyond its natural 24-48 hour expiration date, and the president with his numbers in freefall panicked and did the only dance he knows how to do. https://t.co/D5hAXNJAXd

I think at this point, they could fill up one of the Sunday hours tomorrow with twitter videos of black people asking white people to stop busting shit up

One thing the protests drove home was I miss my people.
I spend a lot of time alone but I also — I used to — spend a lot of time with my friends.
I need some dress up with the girls and a water-gun fight in the yard.
That’s what we’d be doing now. I ain’t been called the coolest uncle in the world and king of the river in quite a while.
Served
I have seen a lot of focus on looting and rioting and protestors here, but the nationwide campaign of violence by police today should have everyone terrified.
They are operating as unaccountable militias in our cities, at war with citizens.

I know white people, and I still predict Trump’s numbers to be *way* up once the polling periods get mostly past the 29th-30th or so.

How could they tell?

@Matt McIrvin: Well then, maybe tens of millions of you motherfuckers should throw your hands up and go, “

@David ? ☘The Establishment☘? Koch: I wonder what impact the riots will have, if any.

With six emergency vehicles in our cul de sac for the last hour couldn’t sleep. Disheartening to see the pictures and read the stories. I always thought the antifa shit was pretty much fictional crap from the right but I guess “outside agitators” does apply in part this time.
I think this would be a good time for Joe Biden to begin to be more visible. Both in person and in ads, and I hope to hell that his team is working 24/7 strategizing. It may be cynical but is is also reality, because you know trump will turn the protests themselves into a whine about how white people are being oppressed.
Jim, Foolish Literalist
He issued this statement at about midnight
He also spent a half hour on the phone with the Floyd family, which is making news, in the shadow on the disturbances

I actually participated in that poll a couple of days ago….first time ever on a poll. I found myself getting somewhat irate with the guy on the other end when he kept asking if my answer was “strongly” or “likely” or something else I don’t remember (I’m really into brevity). At the end, he asked me for my zip code which I had no problem with…..oh, and also asked about my governor’s response….

Fucking thank you. I’ve been wanting to say just that to Matt for ages. I like the guy otherwise, but good god if he isn’t like Chicken Little most of the time
Martin
@bluehill: I think political scientists would say that it normally would favor a ‘law and order’ platform, but I think that only applies when you can campaign to the right of the incumbent. Trump can hardly save us from the riots that happened under his watch.
So I think in this case it’ll depend on how Trump responds, which I think we can be pretty confident will make it worse, not better.
Goku (aka Amerikan Baka)
@NotMax:
Hey, 538 is pretty good when it comes to polling. The trouble comes when they try to do deeper political analyses, like that BS “Dems don’t care about MeToo wrt Tara Reade” piece I linked to from there a while back.
They were right when it came to the 2016 results, giving Trump a much better chance than other pollsters/aggregators were. Sam Wang was talked about all the time in 2015-2016. Now, nobody mentions him anymore
Goku (aka Amerikan Baka)
@Martin:
Yeah, plus Nixon was more competent than Trump, could at least fake empathy, and wasn’t dealing w/ the worst pandemic since the 1918 Spanish Flu

@JWR:
Trump can’t pretend to care about anyone but himself, even for a couple of minutes in a condolence call.
James E Powell
@Matt McIrvin:
That’s certainly possible. But if it becomes widely accepted that he is going to lose – if Biden’s lead in the key states is still there on Labor Day – Trump’s support will collapse and the press/media will stop working so hard to prop him up.
opiejeanne
I haven’t looked for it, but did a bunch of MAGAts show up in DC at the protest on Saturday?
Rob
@opiejeanne: As far as I know, no. I live in the area, did a quick check of non-F*x tv news websites, didn’t see that mentioned at all. On the other hand, there was looting in the city.
Chris Johnson
@Served: Funny, I see a lot of people with familiar nyms understanding perfectly well that this is driven by police violence and alt-right provocateurs, something that’s sharply escalated. An unwelcome development, but utterly unsurprising.
I suspect SOMEBODY has figured out that riots with a lot of yelling are just as good super-spreader coronavirus events as choir practices, and if you send in undercover cops to destroy what hospitals and facilities they have… this is war and it’s being waged HARDCORE. Some of this is very intentional warfare.
I think a lot of people around here do understand what’s going on. It’s a pretty informed crowd, when you leave out the masses of unfamiliar nyms here stirring shit up, which also seems to be a tradition at certain orchestrated times.

@LaenCleardale: Somewhat, “snerk” as that’s the National Headquarters of that white supremacist organization, the Daughters of the Confederacy, who funded the majority of Confederate monuments across this country in an attempt to assert white authority and rewrite history. And I’d be fine with that as someone born Richmond, VA, BUT the headquarters is right next to the VA Museum of Fine Arts and the VA Museum of History and Culture. Fortunately, the fire didn’t spread to those institutions. Graffiti yes, Fire no.

@LaenCleardale: OMG. I was just there Saturday evening. I walked around the VMFA and that’s right next door.

This may be a dead thread, but I put together a montage of a bunch of the incidents from the last week, set to Trump’s words.

Elizabelle
@Cheryl from Maryland: I was taking photos, yesterday late afternoon and dusk, of many of the statues on Monument Avenue in Richmond, plus Kehinde Wiley’s fabulous new monumental statue, and the VMFA grounds. Was trying to put together an OTR, or a post on the problem of memorializing the wrong kind of history.
The Jefferson Davis monument just repels. And it’s the biggest one out there. Need to bring a real camera to deal with it — the wording along its top — the grateful people of the South stuff. Gah.
The JEB Stuart and Robert E. Lee bases were covered with grafitti overnight. In my photos, you can see that someone threw some pink paint on the Lee statue earlier — it was still there. Kind of funny — two guys were there practicing putting, and that has to be one of the best uses for that prime space of green grass around Master Robert.
As you know, the Daughters of the Confederacy building face is pretty much marble (or looks like it). Will head over and get some fresh photos today, if it’s possible. I did not photograph the front of the building last night; was walking along behind it.
