    @rikyrah: Agreed, those pictures are scary.

    We are definitely not ready to reopen in Washington, and yet even the worst-hit counties: King, Snohomish, and Pierce, all started a stage 1 opening: Restaurants’ indoor capacity only half allowed, barber shops and salons are open but capacity is restricted, etc. I’ve been keeping track of the daily numbers, both new cases and deaths, and the cases are still increasing.

    Malaysia’s daily numbers, which are really good today. Seven new cases: one from local infection involving a foreign worker being screened ahead of commencing work, six imported infections in Malaysians returning from abroad. Total 8,336 cases.

    A whopping 281 more patients recovered, total 6,975 recovered or 83.7% of all cases. Of 1,244 active and contagious cases in hospital, six are in ICU of whom one is on a ventilator. No new deaths, total still 117 deaths. Infection fatality rate 1.4%, case fatality rate 1.65%.

    Re The NYT opinion piece: it seems like the USA’s big obstacle in fighting Covid-19 is that President Trump regularly says/does something self-serving that soon turns out to be stupid and dangerous. Not many other countries have such a leader to deal with.

    It’s probably testament to my lack of taste but I love that Nashville Public Library advert. It made me smile and I love teddy bears! I blame it on too much Andy Pandy and Sooty and Sweep as a child.

    As for Boris Johnson, the best that can be said for him is that he’s not as bad as Trump. Unfortunately, that’s an extremely low bar.

    ‘As at 3:00pm on 9 June 2020, a total of 7,267 cases of COVID-19 have been reported in Australia, including 102 deaths and 6,720 have been reported as recovered from COVID-19.

    • Over the past week, there has been an average of 6 new cases reported each day. Of the newly reported cases, the majority have been from Victoria.
    • Of cases with a reported place of acquisition, 62% have recent international travel history, including over 1,300 cases associated with cruise ships.
    • To date, over 1,650,500 tests have been conducted nationally. Of those tests conducted 0.4% have been positive.’

    2 new cases today in NSW. 19 cases in hospital, 2 in ICU.

    That Italy article is the result I was hoping for. I was so terrified that tests would be closer to 5% than 50%. If that can be confirmed by other studies, then we can change a lot of our beliefs about the fatality rate and likelihood for new waves in heavily hit places.

    Interesting story from my son that may indicate some of what is going on: he is (now distant!) friends with a boy he went to high school with. His friend walked with his family from Hondorus around the age of 7 and is – as far as I can tell – a completely undocumented worker in Atlanta, living in a very large undocumented worker community for construction sites. He’s been sick for the past 2 weeks with a variety of symptoms and went to a doc-in-the-box where he tested negative for the flu.

    According to him EVERYONE in that community has it but can’t afford to stop working in Atlanta’s underground undocumented labor market. So wider spread than acknowledged in a large number of people who aren’t being counted or tracked.

    (Side note – they also hold crazy, conspiracy views on just about everything and seem to have a large anti-semitic streak)
