Coronavirus is “my worst nightmare,” worse in ways than Ebola or HIV, said Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases https://t.co/z6k1HVprTP

Video at the link:
… “Ebola was scary, but Ebola would never be easily transmitted,” Fauci said speaking at the BIO International Convention.
“HIV, as important as it is, was drawn out and over an extended period of time,” added Fauci, who is also a top member of the White House Coronavirus Task Force.
Many never felt threatened by the disease because it was always a threat “depending upon who you are, where you are, where you live.”
In the past, when people would ask Fauci to describe a disease that would be his worst nightmare, he said he would often describe it as something that was a brand new respiratory infection that likely jumped from an animal, and had a very high degree of transmissibility. The world has seen outbreaks that have at least some of those characteristics, he said, but Covid-19 had all of those characteristics combined…
Widespread mask-wearing could prevent COVID-19 second waves, study shows https://t.co/pR78BKDKdX pic.twitter.com/Ed7AsMNEK6

… The study found that if people wear masks whenever they are in public it is twice as effective at reducing the R value than if masks are only worn after symptoms appear.
In all scenarios the study looked at, routine facemask use by 50% or more of the population reduced COVID-19 spread to an R of less than 1.0, flattening future disease waves and allowing for less stringent lockdowns.
“We have little to lose from the widespread adoption of facemasks, but the gains could be significant,” said Renata Retkute, who co-led the study.

From the Australian Dept of Health:
‘As at 3:00pm on 10 June 2020, a total of 7,276 cases of COVID-19 have been reported in Australia, including 102 deaths and 6,744 have been reported as recovered from COVID-19.
9 new cases today. Many of the new cases in recent days have been detected in people who are in 14-day quarantine, having recently returned from overseas. There are 20 cases in hospital, 3 in ICU and 2 ventilated. The last death occurred 18 days ago in Victoria. In my state, SA, the last death was 59 days ago.

Malaysia’s daily numbers. Just two new cases, one local infection (a non-Malaysian contact of another case), one imported by a returning Malaysian. This is the lowest daily number of new cases reported since February 18. Total 8,338 cases.
39 more patients recovered, total 7,014 recovered or 84.1% of all cases. Of 1,206 active and contagious cases, five are in ICU of whom none is on a ventilator. One new death, total 118 deaths. Infection fatality rate 1.4%, case fatality rate 1.65%.
Today Malaysia enters the recovery phase of its movement control order, which is expected to last to Merdeka (independence) Day on August 31. During this period the Government expects to reopen more and more economic sectors subject to standard operating procedures for each sector. DG of Health Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah says the priority now is to step up surveillance in the community and in hospitals to ensure there is no new spike in infections during this period. He urges Malaysians to keep up the discipline that has helped bring down the infection rate so low. If we can maintain a low infection rate up to Merdeka, he says, it might then be possible to move on to an exit strategy including the reopening of international borders.
In other news, the Education Ministry announced that schools will reopen on June 24 to fifth- and sixth-formers preparing for nationwide exams, as well as students preparing for international exams.

The peak in April was about 2800 deaths in one day. About 15k per week that month. It would not take too long to get back up to those levels, if we’re back at nearly 1100/day now. And it’s also possible to go above April levels.

And a good chunk of the world is about to enter what used to be peak summer travel season. I wonder if people will try to fly again, or will we see more auto travel and more camping, etc.
Will Australia and New Zealand impose restrictions on people flying into those countries?
Amir Khalid
@Brachiator:
That’s the general idea. What countries are generally talking about is whitelisting a very small group of other, nearby nations from which they will allow incoming travellers — who may still be required to quarantine for 14 days upon arrival. I think the US is not going to get on such a whitelist anytime soon.

@NotMax: At this rate the official number of COVID-19 deaths in the US** will surpass US military fatalities in World War I (106,516) just in time for Agolf Twitler’s birthday. Have a miserable 74th, Shitgibbon!
NB in the Great War, fewer than half of US military fatalities occurred as a result of combat (53,402 or 45.8%) – most of the rest, one would surmise, caused by the Spanish (probably, in fact, Kansas) flu.
** The actual number is no doubt higher, but we’ll never be sure by how much.

Here in LA county we are still required to wear masks in stores, but it looks to me that maybe 10% are wearing them outside. The vehicle traffic is not fully up to normal, but it’s not far off. It’s quieter in the evening than normal. And that is very, very bad in a pandemic. Most people have seemingly no appreciation for the situation and are demanding their lives back, which is of course the exact wrong thing to do.
J R in WV
@Ruckus:
I went into town yesterday, thinking I had a routine dentist appointment, because the reminder card they handed me 6 months ago said 6/9/20 — but their computer said 7/9/20 — oh well.
Bought a 10-pack of disposable masks, not much less comfortable than my big 3M industrial respirator, actually. My glasses did fog up, and it wasn’t nearly as heavy. But I think I’ll rely on the big industrial respirator, which in a non-volunteer trial completely eliminated the odor created by the old Suburban running rich and burning oil next to me at Kroger’s, spewing slightly blue smoke on my feet.
Most folks in Kroger’s were wearing masks. After I quit and checked out, I noticed that the same sorts of people who were not wearing a mask at all, who I saw walking towards the store, were all smoking cigarettes to get a nicotine fix before entering the no-smoking grocery store. And it clicked for me.
People who smoke have a very distorted view of how health works — it can’t happen to me is their belief, otherwise they wouldn’t still be smoking. These are the people who refuse to take any steps to protect their health, no masks, no self-separation from others, nothing like that. Maybe not 100%, but in the high 90s at least. The most dangerous people to be around — fortunately, you can smell them coming and run away!

@Brachiator:
NZ will retain the present restriction. You are welcome to visit but be prepared for the 14-day quarantine. There is talk of relaxing the quarantine for Australians, when their own COVID rate reaches 0 (and if track-&-contact systems can harmonise).
Annamal
@Sm*t Cl*de: I would like to see a stepped up entry process to allow more people to come in and quarantine (at the moment it’s causing real pain for families and workers who have been separated) but I can’t imagine New Zealand dumping the 14 day quarantine for anyone other than the Pacific Islands (who are covid free) and potentially Australia after an infection cycle with no community transmission in any of the states.
