Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

“Cheese and Kraken paired together for the appetizer trial.”

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

Not so fun when the rabbit gets the gun, is it?

Whatever happens next week, the fight doesn’t end.

Within six months Twitter will be fully self-driving.

Let’s finish the job.

We’ve had enough carrots to last a lifetime. break out the sticks.

It’s always darkest before the other shoe drops.

It’s the corruption, stupid.

Technically true, but collectively nonsense

I like you, you’re my kind of trouble.

I’m sure you banged some questionable people yourself.

“And when the Committee says to “report your income,” that could mean anything!

I’d hate to be the candidate who lost to this guy.

Usually wrong but never in doubt

When do we start airlifting the women and children out of Texas?

“The defense has a certain level of trust in defendant that the government does not.”

This really is a full service blog.

You don’t get to peddle hatred on saturday and offer condolences on sunday.

Let us savor the impending downfall of lawless scoundrels who richly deserve the trouble barreling their way.

Stamping your little feets and demanding that they see how important you are? Not working anymore.

Meanwhile over at truth Social, the former president is busy confessing to crimes.

Wow, you are pre-disappointed. How surprising.

Come on, media. you have one job. start doing it.

Wednesday Evening Open Thread: Tomb Looter Hopes Own Tomb Will Be Looted

I don't believe that Forrest Fenn's treasure has really been found. And I'm certain that if it has been found, the finder has no idea what he or she is holding. I'll explain, but first here's the news today: https://t.co/MW1AnqcJ6f

— Tony Dokoupil (@tonydokoupil) June 8, 2020

But I didn't come to Fenn for the story everyone knows today, the tale of a twinkly-eyed gentleman who buried treasure so kids could fall in love with the outdoors. On the contrary. I learned about Fenn from the FBI. On a grave-robbing case.

— Tony Dokoupil (@tonydokoupil) June 8, 2020

But there had been questions for years about where Forrest had made his money. When I visited his compound in Santa Fe, I found a house that operates like a museum, but with no guards, better inventory, and a price list.

— Tony Dokoupil (@tonydokoupil) June 8, 2020

When I asked Fenn about the FBI case, he told me that he couldn't discuss it because his lawyer told him, "if you talk about it, you could lose it." (Then later he told me he misspoke.)

— Tony Dokoupil (@tonydokoupil) June 8, 2020

Fenn told me he filled the treasure box with ancient figurines, a Spanish ring, turquoise beads, American eagle gold coins, gold nuggets, a vial of gold dust, two gold discs, and "a lot of jewelry," including rubies, sapphires, and diamonds. But Fenn wasn't done.

— Tony Dokoupil (@tonydokoupil) June 8, 2020

Where would he get such an idea? Well, it turns out that Fenn's plans for death mirrored the way he lived. (And I promise this is all coming back around to why I don't believe the treasure has been found.)

— Tony Dokoupil (@tonydokoupil) June 8, 2020

You can read the rest here, but if you click on any tweet above, the comments are kinda interesting, too:

Just saw this! Super sickening! No word where it will be held as yet. My friend and I can’t think where he might like it. She says all the streets in the city are torn up now.

He liked the TPD cop who told recruits in a Tulsa suburb in January 2020 that cops need to kill 20% more blacks, right?—-the man is disgusting!

My friend had theories where the treasure was hidden and was all packed up and ready to spend the next two weeks looking for it…until the news broke about it being found. If someone actually found it, my friend missed his chance, though where he was looking for it may not be where it was hidden. I scoured through that poem trying to identify possible locations. It was a fun puzzle.

Since this is an open thread.  I’ve been doing “classic movie nights” with my 14 year old daughter during quarantine.  And yes, we are using the more expansive definition of “classic” that extends into the 1980s.

Last night we watched “Back to the Future” which she absolutely loved.  That came out in 1985 when I was in college.   I did the math.  The 1955 “past” in “Back to the Future” was more recent in 1985 than the 1985 “present” is from today.  The 1950s sock-hop era was 30 years in the past in 1985.  Today 1985 is 35 years in the past.

My daughter commented as much on the 1985 fashions as 1955, asking “did all the girls have that same weird hair?” and being intrigued by the “mom jeans” that the girls were wearing in 1985.

Driftglass and bluegal look out on a cornfield in downstate Springfield, IL where “Chicago” is code for ‘crime,’ ‘liberal,’ and ‘black.’

I might have to disagree with you on that.  I’d say that if “Chicago” is code for anything downstate, it’s that Chicago gets all the $$ and the perks, and downstate gets screwed.

Not speaking for myself, of course, because I grew up in Chicago, and I, and this college town, don’t have that attitude.

On another note: looks like the House impeachment managers get to take…well, not exactly a victory lap…more like a “we told you so” lap

After the trial concluded, Trump focused on undermining institutions that could provide accountability and transparency. He fired or removed five inspectors general for simply doing their jobs: including reporting on shortages of PPE and other gear in hospitals and investigating potential misconduct by the SoS.

The president has made clear his interest in turning the traditionally independent Justice Department into a political arm that can punish enemies and protect allies. In Attorney General William P. Barr, Trump has an enabler of that corrupt mission. Barr allows the president to intervene in criminal cases with implications for his personal interests, and Barr carries out Trump’s orders in shocking fashion.

It goes on to list many more Bad Things Going On under trumpov & Co and asks that the enablers think about, um, something.

C’mon, Schiff!  You guys did a righteous job during the impeachment trial.  No more second, third, and fourth chances.  Pass more Articles (against trumpov, Barr, or both) or just scorch the GOP – none of this “please find your way” stuff.

The Louisville Courier Journal has issued a strong endorsement for Charles Booker in the Kentucky Senate race:

Charles Booker is the kind of political leader and change agent that our commonwealth needs. We believe he is worthy of the Democratic nomination.  The Kentucky state representative, born and raised in Louisville’s West End, has the background, experience, commitment and vision to help transform our state and nation. He brings a perspective and several well-crafted ideas that Kentucky voters need to consider as we approach November’s general election.

While Amy McGrath has broad support, as evidenced by her successful fundraising, she has not shown the progressive ideas and bold leadership necessary to move our state forward. She has been overly moderate, measured and cautious throughout this campaign, focusing more on her military service (which we applaud and sincerely respect) or her motherhood than offering a sweeping vision for the commonwealth — especially in these turbulent times. Unfortunately, her message to voters has been unimaginative and uninspiring.

We also believe the national Democratic Party was too quick to offer its full support and fundraising apparatus to a candidate who has never held public office and stumbled out of the gate when announcing her candidacy.

Booker’s vision for Kentucky and the United States is bold, progressive, positive and passionate. We believe he’s the strongest in this field of Democrats in Kentucky’s June 23 primary and encourage voters to look closely at his record and vision for our commonwealth.

Ambrosia Salad was noted among a list of foods falling out of favor.

Sounds… interesting? Serious Eats says ambrosia salad dates back at least to the late 1800s, and adds that it likely became popular because at the time, all those ingredients were special, exotic treats. It became linked with Christmas traditions, and it just sort of stuck around in the South.

While there’s a small portion of the population — again, mostly in the American south — that is trying to give ambrosia salad a makeover and re-popularize it, NPR found many people are just happy this weird stuff is going the way of the dodo.

An audio recording of  “D.C. National Guard General Congratulates Troops on Protest Response ”  is at the start of  a NYT article about the National Guard being ordered to attack protesters in Lafayette Square.

Transcript of the recording of the General speaking to troops

The eyes of the world were upon the DC The National Guard. The actions that occurred this past week were absolutely historic. The United States Armed Forces continues to have a great credit score. And the National Guard coupled with the greater Guard Nation performed magnificently. I cannot begin to explain to you, and those of you on the line know this, the risk we have. These commanders, service members out there with ammunition, equipment moving into the field. Everything that everyone alluded to with the stress of social, mental, physical, emotional fatigue— It doesn’t go unnoticed. For all intents and purposes, we’re calling that Monday, the immediate response day was a 911.
We were able to get out there, do link analysis to figure out how that happened. It’s quite obvious how it all happened. If you haven’t heard, uh, Wednesdays is considered the Alamo in Lafayette Park and the Saturday, which was the sixth of June, was D-Day. It was the Super Bowl. The Secretary of the Army was here with water in his eyes on Friday night June 5, setting conditions for operations on June 6.

    From the article

(O)n one point everyone is agreed: The first days of June, a calamitous period for the Trump presidency, have been a debacle for the National Guard.  There has been a torrent of criticism from Congress, senior retired military officers and Guard members themselves.

    …

D.C. Guard members … say they feel demoralized and exhausted. More than 60 percent are people of color, and one soldier said he and some fellow troops were so ashamed in taking part against the protests that they have kept it from family members.

Interviews with two dozen military officials as well as texts, internet chats, audio recordings, emails and documents obtained by The New York Times also show that:

    * Senior Army leaders — in an effort to prevent what they feared would be a calamitous outcome if President Trump ordered combat troops from the 82nd Airborne Division holding just outside city limits to the streets — leaned heavily on the Guard to carry out aggressive tactics to prove it could do the job without active-duty forces.
    * Guard leaders issued a flurry of ad hoc orders that put thousands of Guard troops in face-to-face conflict with fellow Americans.
    * Some of the Guard troops were just out of basic training, and others had no experience in controlling disturbances in the streets. Troops were allowed to drive heavy vehicles on the streets without the usual licensing.

In the next days, the Army is expected to release the results of a preliminary investigation into why the helicopters — a Black Hawk and, in particular, a Lakota with the Red Cross emblem designating it a medical helicopter — came to be used to terrorize protesters in Washington.

Ryan McCarthy, the Army secretary, acknowledged that he gave the order for the helicopters to respond, but by the time that order reached the pilots, officials said, it was interpreted as high profile and urgent to disrupt the protests. Officials expect the pilots who flew the helicopters will receive some type of punishment.

And when National Guard officials requested written guidance allowing troops without military licenses to drive armored vehicles around Washington, the officer in charge of the task force, Brig. Gen. Robert K. Ryan, said it was a verbal order from the Army’s chief of staff, Gen. James C. McConville.

Written confirmation never came, and a Defense Department official with direct knowledge of the situation said General McConville never gave such an order.

    It’s much longer.
