My sister and her husband came down for father’s day and because we care about our parents, they socially distanced on the porch:
Devon brought down a bunch of strawberries that I am eating right now- they are so ripe and sweet I cut the tops off with a butter knife.

Good on you, Cole. Sounds like a good day.
Martin
Once again I ask, how the fuck were you ever a Republican.
jl
Happy father’s day, father of Cole. As Cole has explained to us, you have been through H… … a lot…
Happy daughter’s day to his sister. And son-in-laws day to son-in-law.
Edit: Happy son-from-hell day to Cole! Be a good kid today.

@Martin: take it easy on John. The northern panhandle has always been a republican stronghold. They used to be Lincoln republicans but change is slow here.

My West Virginia mother raised me to take the tops off strawberries with my thumbnail. Allows just scooping off the green top without wasting more of the berry.
jl
@Honus: I’ll take over on Cole.
Cole’s father looks kindly and wise. Cole’s sister looks beautiful, nice and sweet and kind, and totally wonderful, as usual. Her husband looks stolid and nice, the best of W by God Virginia (tho have no clue if he is from there or not, but the view out the window looks gorgeous, so let’s go with it).
No pic of Cole. Need a pic of Cole, all masked up. I’ll assume a deadhead mask. Or his univ logo. Pic of Rosie growling, something.

Happy Father’s Day to your dad John, and all the BJ dads!
Hope you all had a great day!

Happy Fathers Day to all. My dad was born in 1916, so he was too young to remember the last pandemic. He wouldn’t have been amused by this one.

Happy father’s day!
I watched Knives Out with the fam today, which we picked basically because we’d heard good things, but turned out to be a film about a father eventually trying to do right. Life is weird

Father’s Day deserves a song

@jl: if you look close there’s CLEARLY a doggo sniffing Cole’s brother-in-law’s butt

In honor of Father’s Day, ugly neckties.

Happy Happy to the Best Dad Dog and Cat Dad along with the best Baby Birdies Dad one could wish for. Sam and Charlie are so lucky to have you in their loves! You love them as I do and that means the world to me. Never forget how special you are to all of us! Love, love, loves x 13 plus 1!

Happy Father’s Day all! Samwise didn’t get me a card and I’m kind of mad.

@Benw: I just finished watching it too, and I got a big kick out of seeing that Rian Johnson named his production company after the beach by my house. Great cast

Today was a great day.
This afternoon we had — for the first time this summer — daughter / son-in-law, and son / daughter in law over to our backyard to sit in a circle of chairs (not too close together) and tell stories. Five kids playing in the yard. (And these were the most observant families about minding virus protocols.) We got into the extended extended family stories. I asked the SIL and DIL, “OK, we know your parents. Tell me about your grandparents.” And we were off. It seems that the stories that young adults have been told about their g’parents and g’g’parents fit into several categories:
[* In my family the story of g’g’pa C____ is that he was knifed in a political argument in the 1880s, they asked him “who did it?”, he said “I’ll tell you later,” and died. Totally bogus. He was injured in a railyard accident, took a week to die from the injuries. My brother tracked it down in the papers. It never happened, and yet all four brothers of my generation heard the same story. Who made up the “I’ll tell you later” story? My father? My g’pa? Could be either of them. We’ll never know.]
[** What does it mean when in the 1970s, my g’mother (then in her 80s) says that her sister-in-law was “kind of wild” and then clams up? What was my great-aunt ______ actually like, in her 20s, in 1900? The kids get only the edited version. The next generation gets even less.]
But it was a great afternoon.

John, you gave your dad an excellent father’s day. I know, because I am a dad, and I know what I like.
What I like best is seeing my kids happy, and seeing them taking care of each other. The best feeling in the world is knowing that my kids will love and help each other, long after I am gone.
So, you gave him that, and that is a lot. The strawberries are just, I don’t know, icing on the cake. (Though I would rather have strawberries than icing, anyhow).

Happy dad here. My son and his great wife came over for rounds of back porch darts. Distancing, but laughter. They brought local beer and six bags of mushroom compost. What can I say, they know what I like.
Damn, Cole, I’m wearing the same shoes as your father.
Benw
@Mary G: cool, what beach?
Holy hell, he took that Last Jedi (a good SW movie!!) money and spent it on a great cast

@BC in Illinois: I just know that thanks to my Québecois great grandfather I’m second cousins with the Dionne quintuplets. My great-grandmother’s cousins help settle Kern county in California. And apparently purchasing wives is a thing in my ancestry. Including my parents.

Invest in a simple strawberry huller. They are a unitasker, but they take up little space and make the stem removal so much quicker and easier.

Happy Father’s Day to Papa Cole?????
Yutsano
@Geoduck: You don’t really even need that. Just a sharp paring knife and one little precise cut and you’re done. I mean we are talking about Cole here so…maybe your idea is better. Although you know he will figure out a way to damage himself on one.

@BC in Illinois: I know the feeling. I am trying to bash into publishable form a memoir written by my late father (who is sort of famous – known by his work more than his name). I read the part about his early years to his sister (my aunt) who said they must have had different childhoods. Almost every story I was told growing up I have been unable to verify. Making the job a bit harder than it should be.

@Yutsano: I stand by my statement, tho I will emphasize, get a SIMPLE one, not one of those stupid overworked things that look like a robot claw.

@Geoduck:
This test supports your position. I’ve never used anything other than a paring or utility knife.

Coming in very late but also very sincere to wish Daddy Cole a Happy Father’s Day. He (and Mama Cole, of course) raised a bunch of incredibly good, kind people.
Also, Daddy Cole looks great!

Had a somewhat quiet Father’s Day. Wife is in the hospital (back surgery) and daughter is an RN at St. Joseph in Orange (labor & delivery) and works weekends. Had breakfast at a restaurant next to leisure world (I live a short distance from there) and have gotten to know a number of them from there…..and they all wear masks. Had dinner at my favorite restaurant, Gourmet Pie, where during their down time, did a reconstruct and the tables and booths are well spaced. Not many dining in, mostly take-out that I could see.

Happy Father’s Day to Papa Cole and the Cole family. My step-daughter visited for Father’s day, I’ve not seen her since January. She hasn’t had any COVID patients in over 2 weeks so felt that visiting was safe.

There’s a little farm stand down the road from me (mistermix – on Knickerbocker) that has the best strawberries around. We have been getting 2 quarts every day for the last week. Straight, with sugar, with whipped cream, or strawberry shortcake…. heaven.
