Also, for us history nerds:
1) A stranger than fiction Roman ring mystery thread: this enigmatic Roman gold ring was found in a ploughed field near Silchester in 1785. The square bezel has a portrait of the pagan goddess Venus, inscribed backwards SUNEV for use as a signet ring by the owner. Curiously… pic.twitter.com/Ls0QcDVNzq

So…did the trash pandas get their 15 minutes or not? Someone has to have gotten them on the show. They would have been the most popular segment.
EDIT: those also look like juveniles. So da animal yoots are rising up!
Big fan of the trash panda. Wickahd smaht, and destructive as hell.
Trash pandas know where the mother(fucker) lode of trash is.
I’ve had real world experience with cattle for many years and I can tell you that they are remarkably indestructible. Dumber than shit but amazingly tough. When humanity finally corkscrews into the ground, cattle will almost certainly survive until at least the next extinction.
This BBC segment is both gross and fascinating at the same time:
Near as I can deduce from the overeager reportage it derives from secondhand hearsay, but have a look and draw your own conclusions.
@NotMax: Live and learn. Ok, scratch the “live” part. First in among 237 “Darwin Award!” responses…..
I’m still recovering from this morning’s trip up 395. I got some great pics and some that didn’t work?.
In other news, they had a serious fire at Mission San Gabriel, very sad.
it figures that Wittes would be into the weird shit.
@Patricia Kayden: first reply to that tweet is the kicker.
@lumpkin: My farming experience is limited, but I was still surprised at the number of commenters on that thread who think that the star of the video is a “cow” when his family jewels are on such clear display. Also, most of them have never seen a plastic calf shed.
Pretty impressive (over 4000 acres) brush fire nearby this week. Began immediately adjacent to a gun range.
Presuming the 90+ minute power outage at the abode this afternoon related, resulting from feeder line rerouting and/or temporary pole replacement.
I wasn’t thrilled with the cow video. But the idiot who posted it blocked people who expressed that in his post. Which would be fine if he was just some twitter nobody, but this is his bio:
I’d question bringing him onboard any future campaigns. Triggered by criticism. Not a good look.
@?BillinGlendaleCA: Oh no! One of my teenage haunts was the playhouse next door, but also the Mission. My best friend from 10th grade got married there, when we were in our 20s.
The story of the ring was quite the thing
Bit of excitement on our little island today. Superspreader event on 4July has finally brought the virus into our midst. I’m bummed enough at that news, as we’ve been COVID free until now.
But it gets… better? My spouse (Salty Samantha?), who has been doing gig work as a housekeeper, found out today that while she cleaned a guesthouse yesterday, some of the people from the aforementioned superspreader event were mingling amongst her and her partners, all the while knowing that they had been exposed, and WHILE WAITING FOR THEIR TEST RESULTS! And yes, they announced today that they are positive.
We’re a bit unnerved by this, to say the least. On the upside, her contact with them was limited, brief, and in an open, airy and breezy space. But still, gods DAMN these self centered assholes who, because of money, have no conception of consequences for their actions.
We’re self-quarantined for the next 14 days, basically in wait-and-see mode. Medical services here are limited- the “hospital” on the island is less well equipped than your typical stateside strip mall minor emergency facility, and the hospitals in San Juan are filling up- med services here are not… exemplary. We’re both fairly healthy for mid-60’s, but yeah, we’re kinda spooked.
Fuck this timeline.
@Salty Sam: Sending you guys good thoughts and hope those covidiots kept their spittle to themselves. Fuck this timeline.

Cute story about the ring, but Tolkein was intimately familiar with Germanic mythic cycles and very certainly got the idea from the Nibelungen saga.

Jesus, what is wrong with people?
@Salty Sam: Prayers coming for the salty fam & the rest of the housekeeping crew. (And if y’all are not into religious stuff, just figure it’s wishes of excellent luck.)
Wish I were in a position to make those thoughtless goons read the #wearamaska__hole thread. Type in the “ss” part to find, didn’t want to get filtered.
Is she salty or more sassy? ?
I second Tamara’s good wishes.
@billcinsd: I just shared it with a friend who is all about Tolkien.
Moneyed privilege is a helluva drug…
Both actually. I vacillated between “Saltier” and “Saltiest”. Either one will do, but Sassy is what won my heart…
@Jim, Foolish Literalist:
They’re selfish sacks of shit.
@Salty Sam: Hehe
The earnestness of the people who debunk Qanon just kills me:
We have to follow the evidence and not keep to arbitrary timelines.
@Another Scott: Ack. Too many links. Help?

Repeating – our ancestors knew in 1919.
We used to eat at a Mexican restaurant across the street from the mission. Called Panchitos it was an institution and had some of the best food I’ve ever eaten. It closed almost 30 yrs ago.

@Another Scott: Well now we get to have both posts!
@?BillinGlendaleCA: Saw that and thought of you immediately. Did you ever get to photograph San Gabriel? Looks like the altarpiece survived …
(And yes, I have not read the thread….)
@Major Major Major Major: Thank you kind sir!
15+ minutes on hold before got to speak with a human but the service person at the cable company was eventually able to resolve the absence of audio on all channels which cropped up after the power returned this afternoon. Sixth “try doing this” was the charm; it was an obscure setting in their box which had reverted to some prehistoric mode.

@NotMax: My dad was born in 1916, fought in WW2, and would not be amused were he alive today.
@NotMax: Humans can be quite valuable!
This would be obvious to anyone who could read a graph, follow the numbers, and understand basic principles.
The worst part of this nightmare is that those in power are blithering idiots who refuse to open their eyes.
TCM noir host Eddie Mueller’s home bar screams fire hazard.
@NotMax: Just like today, there’s always one asshole wearing the mask under their nose.
@Ruckus: I never ate there but I remember the place. I lived in Temple City and we used the Mission Playhouse for our annual musical. We put on professional shows, except for the violins in the orchestra. They were mostly jr high kids and not very good, so every now and then the rest of the orchestra wanted to strangle them. You can imagine in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, the romantic moment the swelling strains of music in the number, “Rosemary!” when J. Pierpont finally notices her, and the sour notes coming from the string section making everyone cringe.
@Inventor: The last time I went to the grocery store the young checker had her nose hanging out of her mask. when we were finished paying I asked her if she had heard that WA had hit a record number of cases, at 716. She hadn’t and seemed a little startled by the number. Then I explained that having her nose out of her mask makes wearing the mask useless. She hiked it up over her nose.
I realize she probably pulled it down again as soon as we were gone, but damn it, I am tired of these yahoos.
Through a string of unfortunate events* the first time any of us in the cast set foot in the performance theater was opening night. One person fell off an extension of the stage, into the orchestra pit, shattering a violin into toothpicks.
Musician submitted a claim for 11 grand. This was back in the early 1980s.
*Beginning with the original theater burning to the ground the day after auditions.
@opiejeanne: Bravo! When you see a viral video of brunette in a cat mask telling people to put on a damn mask and that they are horrible parents, well, you’ll know that’s probably me.
I am so far beyond over these covidiots.

@Elizabelle: I photographed Mission San Gabriel in 2016 and earlier this year.

@Salty Sam: Sue them for lost income.
Had to make a late night burrito run to the local Love’s Truck Stop/Taco John’s. Those folks and the Truckers are wearing masks.
@Jay Noble: And you’re not going to tell us what kind of burrito you got?
@Another Scott: Yeah, the move to phase three felt like it was the result of pressure from businesses and idiots more than data, at least in Northern Virginia. Disappointing compared to earlier decisions.
Seems I only come to BJ to vent. Sorry guys.
Mom passed 3 weeks ago, Dad, 82 with 1 lung has tested positive for Covid and older sister comatose after a second brain surgery. My family of 5 is soon to be down to 2 and the only one left is my Trump loving useless brother.
When Mom passed I got 3 cemetery plots because I knew this was coming but fuck, it really sucks.
Losing those you love is obviously the worst. But knowing I have to do 2 more funerals and play nice with my asshole brother before writing him off permanently, which I’d done before is just too fucking much.
Related fashion link.
@Davebo: That is awful and like you said, way too fucking much. I’m so sorry about your mom, dad, and sister.
I’ve gotten 3 emails from the Washington Examiner in the last week. Some ass sold them my email address. I want revenge.
They may not have liked my second request to unsubscribe me from their feed. At least I hope so.
@Davebo: I’m so sorry to hear that. It’s terrible news.
No apology necessary. Sharing begets caring and this enclave suffers no shortage of shoulders ripe for leaning on and sympathetic ears. Best possible wishes for getting through triply trying times.
Sorry. That is a lot going on all at once.
@eclare: I appreciate it really I do. There was a time back when John was still a Republican that I spent far too much time here.
Now it seems I only come when I need to say something but I don’t want everyone on Twitter or Facebook to know I said it.
Let me say this clearly. I lost my wife of 25 years overnight, but at least I was there in the emergency room and there when life support was removed.
I can’t see my father or my sister. I’m in Houston where Covid is running wild. Beyond the sadness of losing those I love, the constant awareness that they are in a hospital bed and no one can visit is horrific. They are all alone except for the care givers and while I can speak to those nurses and doctors on the phone it’s not the same.
I used to always pay the check for any police or fireman having dinner at my local favorite haunt. From now on caregiver’s drinks and fajitas are on me.
Though hot damn do I wish Red Rooster was in the US.
@Davebo: I can’t imagine not being able to visit loved ones, the anguish that must cause. And of all places to be, Houston. Please be safe in the upcoming services.
@Davebo: That is just heartbreaking. I can’t even imagine not being able to hug a loved one one last time, or speak to them. My grandmother died while I was hospitalized, but at least we could phone. Come and vent all you need to, especially about Abbott the Asshole and the Orange Shitgibbon.
@Mary G: A friend who lives in Plano refers to Abbott as Our-butt.
Here’s some love from the Lost Coast.
Sister Golden Bear
@Davebo: I’m so sorry, that’s awful.
Da Yutes on Tik Tok and various and sundry other intertoob things are still owning Trump.
@HumboldtBlue: Very good to see
Odie Hugh Manatee
I’m so sorry to hear this and send my best wishes to you. I’m just shaking my head at your situation and having to deal with it all at once.
Take care of yourself.
Yeah, can’t give anybody the impression he’s not controlling the frickin’ pandemic, can we now?! (Fat f*cking p*$$y grabbing dim-witted a**hole!)
I am sorry for your loss, and for the upcoming sad times????
@Davebo: All I have to add is that I’m so sorry and I can’t imagine the pain you must be feeling. Please check in often to vent or whatever.
@?BillinGlendaleCA: The pictures of the fire show the total destruction of the interior.
@Jim, Foolish Literalist:
Sound like republicans.
@Davebo: I’m so, so sorry. The load on you must feel unbearable. At least you can vent here, so vent away. Condolences.
What a terrible time for you. I’m in Houston also and staying in and as far away from the outside world as possible. I wish you strength and peace for all you are having to face.
@Lyrebird: Yep…they seem to miss that telltale part in the middle of the “cow’s” abdomen…or they are just city people who don’t understand the terminology lol
And if those flimsy looking plastic things are creep feeders, they don’t seem to be doing the job very well..
@Salty Sam: Ugh. I’m so sorry. Be safe. I don’t know how you don’t spend the next 2 weeks on pins and needles, but I hope you figure out a way.
edit: Maybe putting together more submissions for On the Road would be distracting and would help you pass the time. :-)
Pro tip: Write whatever you want to say about the photos in advance, and then copy it into the form. We’ve had a couple of submissions not make it through recently, so if you do it that way, it’s easy enough to copy and paste again if you have to re-do it.
@Davebo: I have no words. Only tears. So very sorry.
You know the BJ door is always open for talking, venting, crying, raging. And friendship, even if you haven’t been here for a long time.
@Davebo: I’m very sorry. :-(
Condolences to you. Hang in there.
Remember the good times.

@Major Major Major Major:
This is certainly true, but on the other hand, these physical artifacts came into Tolkein’s hands when he was still relatively young and perhaps before his Ring tome was well formed in his mind.
So it seems legitimate to me to think the random discovery of these two related ancient artifacts influenced the whole ring concept. A fun new thing to learn, and on twiter, for crying out loud!! Amazing coincidence too!
Gold and lead, two nearly indestructable metals….

So sorry for that news. Take a deep breath, while being separate from other people, and hang in there.
We are all with you in that strange intertubes way.
@Davebo: I am so sorry you are going through this. No one deserves all that loss and grief and family members in peril. I wish you peace, and know it may be very slow in coming.
@Davebo: Very late to the thread. I’m so very sorry all of this awfulness is happening to you in one big dump. Hugs!
@Davebo: Peace and comfort to you in these troubled times. I hope your brother tries to maintain civility during all this. Take care of yourself as best as you can.
