Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

But frankly mr. cole, I’ll be happier when you get back to telling us to go fuck ourselves.

🎶 Those boots were made for mockin’ 🎵

How can republicans represent us when they don’t trust women?

The arc of history bends toward the same old fuckery.

I like you, you’re my kind of trouble.

Bad news for Ron DeSantis is great news for America.

This year has been the longest three days of putin’s life.

The republican caucus is already covering themselves with something, and it’s not glory.

“What are Republicans afraid of?” Everything.

… pundit janitors mopping up after the GOP

No one could have predicted…

Republicans do not pay their debts.

Motto for the House: Flip 5 and lose none.

So it was an October Surprise A Day, like an Advent calendar but for crime.

… riddled with inexplicable and elementary errors of law and fact

Optimism opens the door to great things.

If you’re pissed about Biden’s speech, he was talking about you.

Let’s not be the monsters we hate.

Why is it so hard for them to condemn hate?

Impressively dumb. Congratulations.

The cruelty is the point; the law be damned.

Ah, the different things are different argument.

You are so fucked. Still, I wish you the best of luck.

And we’re all out of bubblegum.

Also, for us history nerds:

1) A stranger than fiction Roman ring mystery thread: this enigmatic Roman gold ring was found in a ploughed field near Silchester in 1785. The square bezel has a portrait of the pagan goddess Venus, inscribed backwards SUNEV for use as a signet ring by the owner. Curiously… pic.twitter.com/Ls0QcDVNzq

So…did the trash pandas get their 15 minutes or not? Someone has to have gotten them on the show. They would have been the most popular segment.

EDIT: those also look like juveniles. So da animal yoots are rising up!

I’ve had real world experience with cattle for many years and I can tell you that they are remarkably indestructible. Dumber than shit but amazingly tough. When humanity finally corkscrews into the ground, cattle will almost certainly survive until at least the next extinction.

Pretty impressive (over 4000 acres) brush fire nearby this week. Began immediately adjacent to a gun range.

Presuming the 90+ minute power outage at the abode this afternoon related, resulting from feeder line rerouting and/or temporary pole replacement.

Bit of excitement on our little island today.  Superspreader event on 4July has finally brought the virus into our midst.   I’m bummed enough at that news, as we’ve been COVID free until now.

But it gets… better?  My spouse (Salty Samantha?), who has been doing gig work as a housekeeper, found out today that while she cleaned a guesthouse yesterday, some of the people from the aforementioned superspreader event were mingling amongst her and her partners, all the while knowing that they had been exposed, and WHILE WAITING FOR THEIR TEST RESULTS!  And yes, they announced today that they are positive.

We’re a bit unnerved by this, to say the least.  On the upside, her contact with them was limited, brief, and in an open, airy and breezy space.  But still, gods DAMN these self centered assholes who, because of money, have no conception of consequences for their actions.

We’re self-quarantined for the next 14 days, basically in wait-and-see mode.  Medical services here are limited- the “hospital” on the island is less well equipped than your typical stateside strip mall minor emergency facility, and the hospitals in San Juan are filling up- med services here are not… exemplary.  We’re both fairly healthy for mid-60’s, but yeah, we’re kinda spooked.

    Fuck this timeline.

    BlueVirginia.US:

Note that Virginia entered Phase 3 on July 1, just ten days ago; prior to that, much of Virginia entered Phase 2 on June 5…and much of Virginia entered Phase 1 on May 15. So now, we are approaching two months since Virginia started “reopening,” and now there’s increasing concern that we might need to move back to Phase 2, with Gov. Northam stressing the importance of “avoid[ing] the same spike in #COVID19 cases that other states are experiencing,” while noting that “we are starting to see a concerning increase, particularly in Hampton Roads.”

So, increasingly, it seems possible – maybe even likely – that Virginia might have to pull back from Phase 3 to Phase 2. [Personally, I’d argue that we were too aggressive to move into Phase 3, and that the data really didn’t support it.] Note that if we do pull back to Phase 2, it’s going to be extremely difficult if not impossible to reopen schools, given Phase 2 guidelines, which refer to “limited in-person instruction to preschool through third grade and English Learner students,” “six feet of physical distance to the greatest extent possible,” etc. Of course, even in Phase 3, school districts are struggling to figure out a mix of distance learning and in-person instruction to try to balance educational and health considerations…and again, that’s only going to get more difficult if we move back to Phase 2, driven by worsening data/evidence on the COVID-19 pandemic in Virginia.

We have to follow the evidence and not keep to arbitrary timelines.

@Ruckus:  I never ate there but I remember the place. I lived in Temple City and we used the Mission Playhouse for our annual musical. We put on professional shows, except for the violins in the orchestra. They were mostly jr high kids and not very good, so every now and then the rest of the orchestra wanted to strangle them. You can imagine in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, the romantic moment the swelling strains of music in the number, “Rosemary!” when J. Pierpont finally notices her, and the sour notes coming from the string section making everyone cringe.

She hadn’t and seemed a little startled by the number. Then I explained that having her nose out of her mask makes wearing the mask useless. She hiked it up over her nose.

    True story.

Through a string of unfortunate events* the first time any of us in the cast set foot in the performance theater was opening night. One person fell off an extension of the stage, into the orchestra pit, shattering a violin into toothpicks.

Musician submitted a claim for 11 grand. This was back in the early 1980s.

Now it seems I only come when I need to say something but I don’t want everyone on Twitter or Facebook to know I said it.

Let me say this  clearly.  I lost my wife of 25 years overnight, but at least I was there in the emergency room and there when life support was removed.

I can’t see my father or my sister.  I’m in Houston where Covid is running wild.  Beyond the sadness of losing those I love, the constant awareness that they are in a hospital bed and no one can visit is horrific.  They are all alone except for the care givers and while I can speak to those nurses and doctors on the phone it’s not the same.

I used to always pay the check for any police or fireman having dinner at my local favorite haunt.  From now on caregiver’s drinks and fajitas are on me.

@Davebo: That is just heartbreaking. I can’t even imagine not being able to hug a loved one one last time, or speak to them. My grandmother died while I was hospitalized, but at least we could phone. Come and vent all you need to, especially about Abbott the Asshole and the Orange Shitgibbon.

    L0L!

Even after the federal government recommended Americans wear masks in places where social distancing is impossible, Trump declared he was unlikely to ever wear one himself. And even as some of his aides gently encouraged him to be seen following his own government’s advice, Trump insisted wearing a mask would make him appear weak and give off the impression that he wasn’t controlling the pandemic.

Yeah, can’t give anybody the impression he’s not controlling the frickin’ pandemic, can we now?! (Fat f*cking p*$$y grabbing dim-witted a**hole!)

@Salty Sam: Ugh. I’m so sorry.  Be safe.  I don’t know how you don’t spend the next 2 weeks on pins and needles, but I hope you figure out a way.

edit: Maybe putting together more submissions for On the Road would be distracting and would help you pass the time.  :-)

Pro tip:  Write whatever you want to say about the photos in advance, and then copy it into the form.  We’ve had a couple of submissions not make it through recently, so if you do it that way, it’s easy enough to copy and paste again if you have to re-do it.

    @Major Major Major Major:

Cute story about the ring, but Tolkein was intimately familiar with Germanic mythic cycles and very certainly got the idea from the Nibelungen saga.

This is certainly true, but on the other hand, these physical artifacts came into Tolkein’s hands when he was still relatively young and perhaps before his Ring tome was well formed in his mind.

So it seems legitimate to me to think the random discovery of these two related ancient artifacts influenced the whole ring concept. A fun new thing to learn, and on twiter, for crying out loud!! Amazing coincidence too!

Gold and lead, two nearly indestructable metals….
