Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

“Loving your country does not mean lying about its history.”

if you can’t see it, then you are useless in the fight to stop it.

Weird. Rome has an American Pope and America has a Russian President.

Not rolling over. fuck you, make me.

There are a lot more evil idiots than evil geniuses.

DeSantis transforming Florida into 1930s Germany with gators and theme parks.

A sufficient plurality of insane, greedy people can tank any democratic system ever devised, apparently.

Damn right I heard that as a threat.

The arc of the moral universe does not bend itself. it is up to us to bend it.

Roe is not about choice. It is about freedom.

“Facilitate” is an active verb, not a weasel word.

You cannot love your country only when you win.

These days, even the boring Republicans are nuts.

Wow, you are pre-disappointed. How surprising.

If you voted for Trump, you don’t get to speak about ethics, morals, or rule of law.

Disagreements are healthy; personal attacks are not.

Balloon Juice, where there is always someone who will say you’re doing it wrong.

Republican speaker of the house Mike Johnson is the bland and smiling face of evil.

Text STOP to opt out of updates on war plans.

Make the republican party small enough to drown in a bathtub.

Fight for a just cause, love your fellow man, live a good life.

People are weird.

We’re watching the self-immolation of the leading world power on a level unprecedented in human history.

Republicans: “Abortion is murder but you can take a bus to get one.” Easy peasy.

If you happen to be near a TV at 10 a.m. Eastern time today, take a minute to flip on TCM if you can just to see the necktie Eddie Mueller is wearing during his intro (runs from roughly 10:00 to 10:03 a.m.) to the movie. He has a collection of bizarre neckties and the one he chose for this week’s Noir Alley is a doozy. The jacket is somethin’ else, too.

Good morning, fellow jackals and jackalettes !

Beautiful flowers !  (I try to remember to say ‘thank you’ when I see people working in their gardens.)

    My birthday, today, it is…

“How terribly strange to be seventy…”

Got my first haircut since November, this week.  Still feel lightheaded.

Main computer – HP laptop – suffered hard disk crash this week.  Using older, quite flakey, one now.  Will be getting new model shortly, recommendations welcome.

@NotMax: Yea, our tenant/neighbor. He has a Jon boat in the driveway and parks that either rout front or across the street. He move in with the hairdresser a couple of years ago and has really put a lot of crap on the porch and in the driveway. We’r not crazy about it but they pay the rent and right now we can live with it.

1:15 a.m.: First sound of rains associated with approaching hurricane Douglas heard outside. Main body of storm itself remains hours away.

Maui County remains under a Tropical Storm Warning and Hurricane Watch. Forecasters say the latest models takes the system very close to the islands, skirting the islands on its path up the island chain, with potential impacts overnight into tomorrow for Maui.

It has veered a skootch north, so full impact on Maui expected to be lessened compared to what was anticipated only yesterday. Oahu and Kauai now in the path.

Verdant!  Such a nice variety of flowers.

My kinda organized veggie garden from June and July is at the tipping point where every plant is on the verge of sprawling over its neighbors into a disheveled August garden.  This year I planted my raised veggie beds according to the spacing in square foot gardening guides, but thanks in part to a mislabeled cucumber variety and a few volunteer marigolds and sunflowers, things are getting crowded despite my plan.

My volunteer sunflowers are starting to bloom, the day lilies are in full flower in the perennial beds, and I pick a few cucumbers daily.  Broccoli plants are big but not heading yet.  My purple beans are still climbing their poles, not yet flowering. A fair number of green tomatoes are on the vines, but no signs of ripening yet.   August is going to be intense!

The Immp and I are OK.  His college is still planning on receiving students in three weeks!  In Houston!  Yikes!

But he is thrilled.  At least the place is horizontal (mostly two or three stories with no need to elevator). Students are being organized into “families” which are even smaller than their resident housing.  And the campus although right up against Houston can be largely isolated like a medieval town. No visitors allowed during the fall.
Rice is putting up big outdoor tented areas for classes and dining.  Big tents plus hurricane season?  Hmmmm.  But go he must.

Sorry, Raven, but I am really hoping their football season is put off. No one needs 50,000 strangers on campus. Perhaps next year folks could meet at Rice for a game and a dinner? But, this year — Go Owls! (And I mean go!)

These are lovely, Raven. Thank you for sending them.

I have not been keeping up with the weeding, and I have an impressive crop of poke salat, if anyone would like some. I also learned yesterday that the plantain I have been trying to get under control is supposedly a good thing to use for bug bites and can be eaten, although that sounds like a bridge too far for me. It is a green plant, not the fruit that looks like a banana and can be sliced and fried.

“A fountain spout in the form of a stylized classical or Renaissance figural dolphin. It follows the conventions of those earlier eras, depicting the animal as having fins and scales and a fishlike face instead of the features of actual dolphins. The upraised tail and curved scaled body wrap around a central vertical cattail plant in an S-curve, ending in a stylized face with an open rectangular mouth for spouting water. This object has three holes for hanging as a decorative plaque.”

Last week I mentioned West of Eden’s new butterfly garden was margerinal as a consequence of having attracted no flying caterpillars. A commenter here, suggested adding a mudhole to attract the oleoflies.

Well, in terms of unmitigated disasters, this mudhole project has been Chernobyl on steroids.

Worse, when completed (sort of), the mudhole did not attract fluttering aerial flowers, but the precious grandflakes. The Motherlode, like a frog stuck in the mud, is not hoppy.

And I picked up two rosemary and three oregano at Walmart last weekend, in 4″ peat pots for 87 cents each. They went in also. I hope to plant some Anaheim and bell peppers this evening after a little more bed prep.    I live in central va and it’s hot, but after 4 days with good thunderstorms we are no longer in drought, at least for now.

Garden news: my 16 year old drip system has been failing for 2-3 years and finally made it official. I was suspicious last year but since I was doing knee replacements I couldn’t do anything but throw a sprinkler out once in awhile (it’s all xeric plants but they have limits).  I had the brass stuff looked over and repaired this spring, but that wasn’t it so now I’m slowly pulling up segments, testing a d rebuilding. I haven’t found the failure point yet but I am looking suspiciously at the two pinyon pinesthat have grown a ton in the last 5 years…

@frosty:  LOL!  I hope to remember next year to leave even more room.

I put up 4′ high trellises for my ‘short vine’ (Ha!) pickling cukes.  The vines are now trying to expand WAY beyond the trellises, smother the nearby pepper plants and grab unwary passers-by. They do have tasty cucumbers and are so far totally disease free, so with a much taller trellis, I’d plant them again.
