Hey everybody, we made one change.
Any change on any or all of your devices?
Please try on all your devices and let us know whether it helped, or whether it made no difference – on each one. Please also describe what issues, if any, you are seeing related to the front page or to individual posts loading.
Please try from : 1) the front page AND 2) from within and individual post AND 3) from within an Anne Laurie COVID post.
I’ll start. It sped things up for satby on her Kindle, front page and in individual threads.
My computer never had an issue, and it made no difference on my iPad, regardless of front page or individual threads.
And because Cole thinks I post pictures of Henry but never of Tucker – (and he’s probably right – here are a couple of Tucker pictures.
Who doesn’t need 3 beds and a baby?

I look at Balloon Juice on my cellphone (not an iPhone). So far it’s better, but the real test will be tomorrow morning when I go through the very useful Covid-19 summary. I’ll let you know then.
jeffreyw
seems fast on this Galaxy s9, I’m usually on the desktop so I don’t know if it helps any for that because I didn’t have a problem before
WaterGirl
@WV Blondie: Can I talk you into opening the COVID summary from this morning and letting me know now whether it loads better or not?
WaterGirl
@jeffreyw: Did you try the morning COVID post and the front page?
Baud
I see no improvement in the content, especially in the comment section.
jeffreyw
Went to the covid post on s9, samsung internet, loaded the tweets flawlessly. Pretty quick I’m not sure if it has helped the android phone but it didn’t hurt it.
jeffreyw
Front page loaded nicely on the samsung internet browser for the s9
Ohio Mom
It is loading faster on
my ancient iphone, for which l am grateful.
jeffreyw
Samsung S3 tablet loads front page fast. Covid post lagged slightly filling in the tweets, then caught up as fast as I could swipe the page.
Croaker
Never an issue on the Macbook. Will check the iPad later.
Yutsano
Much better on my mobile (Firefox on Android)
WAY slow on my laptop. (Firefox on Win10).
A Good Woman
Loaded fast on my One Touch 6T phone/Android 10. If I have issues, it’s on the phone, and I am typing from the Dell/Windows 10. Can’t tell a difference there, but my phone thanks you.
debbie
Loading is no speedier on my Chromebook or aging Macbook Pro. My issue was with the delay in clicking on the thread title to open it. It used to be instantaneous. Now, it churns and sometimes jumps a bit so I end up clicking on something in the header (ie, politics, garden threads, etc.) and end up being taken to where I hadn’t wanted to go.
Rob
The Covid thread loads faster now than it did this morning. MacBook Pro with the latest Firefox (79.0).
eta: I delete all cookies on closing the browser at night, and many cookies during the day a couple of times.
WaterGirl
@Croaker: It will be much appreciated if you check back in, either way, after you check the iPad later.
Baud
I thought I had a problem with my ipad, but it’s better now (still slower than I would like, but it is an old ipad model).
raven
@jeffreyw: Same here iPhone Plus

Hmm. Chrome on Android, first generation Pixel XL. About two weeks ago maybe, the tweets started to load a lot slower, 20-30 seconds for the COVID post to completely load. It may be a little faster now, but not much. It doesn’t bother me too much, I just wait, except that sometimes I can’t tell if they’ve failed to load and I refresh. I read posts from RSS, so I don’t generally load the home page on my phone, but it seems about the same when I try it now.
The weird thing is that it seems like it isn’t cumulative time from the tweets loading one by one, once one is loaded, I can scroll through and they’re all there. (Other than that occasionally the top one will fail to load or take a lot longer to load.)
Loading in Chrome on my Mac desktop is much zippier, maybe ten seconds max for the COVID post, and the front page seems to take even less.
Let me know if there’s anything else I can try for you. In any case, I can live with this if it’s okay for most people.
FelonyGovt
Front page and COVID thread load much faster now on my iPhone XR.
Beth in Virginia
Twitter embed is still last thing to load up, but it seems somewhat faster.
zhena gogolia
I think it’s a little faster on my macbook pro with Chrome. But it didn’t bother me anyway, so I’m not the best test case.
zhena gogolia
Tucker is adorable! Cole is right, I don’t recall ever seeing Tucker.
Sab
Quite a bit faster on my Nook ( Galaxy tab E) and the ads loaded blazing fast.
Ad people: What is the point of ads of stuff I already just bought or chose not to buy?
OT: spouse doesn’t want to drive to see comet. I think he is making a mistake, but on the other hand it will look like an incoming airplane with lights. Still, everyone should see a comet at least once if they can. I saw one twenty or thirty years ago and remember.
If our ancestors had a bad ruler then a pandemic then a comet they sat up and noticed. Us, not so much.
HinTN
@WaterGirl: I opened the COVID summary from this morning just now on my Android S8 running Chrome and it loaded right up. What I observed was that the content from the Twitterverse waited for the ad at the top to load but then popped into being with alacrity. Better!
Percysowner
COVID post still slow in getting Tweets loaded on both Iphone 6s and Macbook Air
HinTN
@Baud: Thhbbbppppttttt
BruceFromOhio
@Baud: I strongly object to this behavior, and demand to speak with the bwahahahahaha almost made it all the way through with a straight face
Madeleine
My MacBook Pro is fine. I’ll check the iPad later. It was still slow earlier today, though better than a few days ago. It is not remembering my nym, email when I comment (MacBook is remembering), and there’s no edit prompt.
WaterGirl
@zhena gogolia: Tucker thanks you! He was looking kind of sad because no one noticed him on his solo blog debut.
Sab
@zhena gogolia: My first marriage I married a guy with 6 golden retrievers. I had two elkhound mixes plus their lab/greyhound mix best friend (she was an amazing dog but she looked like a prawn.) Weird, fun times. Nine sweet large dogs in a tiny house.
HinTN
@Redshift:
Same here, both previously and now.
WaterGirl
@HinTN:
To make certain I understand what you are saying…
BEFORE, the tweets wouldn’t load until the banner ad a the top finished loading. NOW that the banner ad is gone, the tweets loaded up much faster. Is that the correct interpretation of what you wrote above?
WaterGirl
@Madeleine: Is it possible that you are loading BJ using private browsing, or whatever name your browser has for that? That is the only reason that BJ would not remember your name.
Well, that and clearing cookies clears it out also.
If you’re not doing either of those things, please let me know. Actually, please let me know either way. :-)
HinTN
@WaterGirl: I still have a banner ad that slides down and which I immediately make slide right up again. The tweets loaded after it slid down.
BruceFromOhio
Windows 10/FireFox on a hardwired connection flies like it always does on all three tests. So does iPhone 6s running 13.5.1 on full-bars wifi.
Poor little Kindle Fire HDX on full-bars wifi crawls like a viper through these suburban streets, and takes 30-32 seconds to load the main page when it has the COVID post as one of the first seven, and also takes 30-32 seconds to load the COVID post itself. This is timed on multiple trials, it appears to be very consistent in the amount of cycles it needs to chew through the twatters.
Now that BGinCHI’s post is up, the COVID post from this morning has rolled to page 2, and the main page loads in 3-4 seconds on the Kindle.
WaterGirl
@HinTN: The Prosper (Proper) ads are still there, but the big banner ad is gone, correct?
mrmoshpotato
Did it help?
Don’t we need a TBogg unit in the comments to know for sure?
Ruckus
@Baud:
You do understand that we create comments based upon what might annoy you, don’t you?
zhena gogolia
@WaterGirl:
Oh, I keep coming back to look at his pictures. Tell him!

At work so on the phone iPhone XR but everything is zippy as normal. I’ll check when I get home.

@Sab:
Wow, this sounds like one of my favorite movies, I Know Where I’m Going! I guess those were wolfhounds.
WaterGirl
@zhena gogolia: I just told Tucker that you think he’s a handsome boy! He is watching me intently, so I think he is pleased.
Omnes Omnibus
I notice no difference on any devices, but I was not having any problems either.
Redshift
@HinTN: That’s what I saw the first time I tried this new version, and I thought it was that the windowshade ad was what it was waiting for (since the tweets popped up immediately after that), but on subsequent tries, the tweets took a while to load even after the windowshade ad.
I do notice now that the big banner ad at the top of the post isn’t there any more; that’s probably speeded it up a little.
Doug R
It’s readable right away, I can see it’s still loading but I’m able to read and scroll almost immediately.
JaySinWA
No appreciable change on the Covid post on Chromebook / Chrome.
Front page loaded well when clicking on the banner, but after scrolling down and asking for the 2nd page of posts, page load never completed before loading Covid page.
I actually missed the Covid post as first on the second page and went to page 3, realized I over shoot and went to page 2. Loading so slow that I did not wait for tweets/images to paint on either, I just went to the Covid post and waited for the tweet storm to die down.
Kristine
No Covid crash today on iPhone with Safari.
PJ
@HinTN: On an iPhone, the banner ad at the top still hides the “comment” button for me when you click the arrow to slide it up. I still have to press the down arrow at the top to get to the very bottom of the page and then scroll up to comment.
But it looks like if you click on a link within the comments (to go to the earlier comment referenced by the newer comment), the entire banner at the top does not reappear, which used to happen, though the tap with the arrow blocking the “comment button is still there. So that’s some improvement.
HinTN
@WaterGirl: On this phone I’ve only had one ad. I’ll send you a screenshot.
namekarB
PC running Windows 10 and Google Chrome. Everything loads faster except for Twitter pics. I checked both Home page and the morning Covid report page. I then cleared the cache, closed the browser and started fresh. Same results, everything faster but Twitter is still the last to load.
WaterGirl
@namekarB: Twitter will always be the last to load. That was true even when the new site went live. It’s a function of how twitter behaves.
But in the last small number of weeks, it has gotten SLOWER. That’s what I’m trying to address. Where the page hangs while twitter loads, as opposed to filling in twitter while the page was already usable.
Hope that helps explain the situation I am trying to solve.
HinTN
@WaterGirl: Ok, I’m tracking now. Yes, there’s no big ass ad.
Sab
@zhena gogolia: Vastly more fun than to live. Nobody got sent to the pound soit was all okay.
One of the things I have prided myself on is I have never adopted a dog or cat and then dumped it, or killed it with medical neglect. And I have adopted a bunch of dogs (a dozen.) We still have all buy one of our cats.
namekarB
@WaterGirl: I am able to scroll and otherwise use the page while twitter finishes loading. Prior sometimes I could and other times I could not. I’ll keep checking and let you know if something changes
Sab
@zhena gogolia: Plus we moved a lot. Took them cross-country one time in a rental truck.
Goldens are stackable. Pile them up like puppies and they are okay. Elkhounds and greyhound mixes are offended.
WaterGirl
@namekarB: Thanks!
WV Blondie
@WaterGirl: Everything loaded like a dream. Thanks!
Mike S (Now with a Democratic Congressperson!)
The morning Covid thread loaded the tweets faster. Chrome on win 10.

@zhena gogolia: I know this thread is deader than dead but I had to jump in and say how much I love I know Where You’re Going too. Just a lovely movie in every way.
ETA: Where I’m Going. Jeez.
WaterGirl
I’m still checking back for feedback, and will be checking again in the morning.
Thanks to everyone who is sharing their info. Feedback is super helpful!

Aging iPad running iOS 10: it’s difficult to say whether there’s no improvement, or just a very slight one. So far I’ve had no outright freeze-ups like in the past, but I still frequently need to wait a number of seconds for major chunks of the page to appear (the entire page, not just the Twitter stuff).
Oddly this seems to be the same for Safari and Chrome — either one will have the same problems with the same sites.
FYI: BJ’s problems are nothing compared to what happens at LGM when I click the Twitter sidebar. Not only do the Twitter pages conk out or freeze, but when I go back to the LGM tab it’s now an empty background and I have to reload. And when the Twitter tab is stalled, I can’t stop the load and go somewhere else in that tab; I have to abandon using that tab by closing it. But open tabs that have nothing to do with the LGM/Twitter paring continue to function just fine.
Belaboring this story because I starting to wonder if Twitter might be throwing so many trackers on the pile that mobile processors just can’t keep up. What else would explain the linkage between the two tabs?
Redshift
@WaterGirl: I’ve definitely seen it get slower, but I don’t think I’ve had it hang. It definitely isn’t hanging for me now while Twitter is loading, so it’s fine.
JimV
I read BJ a couple times most days on a Windows 7 Acer (ugh!) laptop, with an Ad Blocker. Prior to just now, and over the past couple months, it took about five minutes for the embedded Twitter screens to be fully displayed, with many brief messages in the lower left corner (“submitting …”, “processing …” or some such things).
Just now, everything seems to have displayed immediately. Assuming this is not a fluke, thanks a lot!
