Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Republicans choose power over democracy, every day.

We do not need to pander to people who do not like what we stand for.

They fucked up the fucking up of the fuckup!

Is trump is trying to break black America over his knee? signs point to ‘yes’.

Well, whatever it is, it’s better than being a Republican.

The only way through is to slog through the muck one step at at time.

You don’t get to peddle hatred on saturday and offer condolences on sunday.

Stand up, dammit!

“Loving your country does not mean lying about its history.”

The Giant Orange Man Baby is having a bad day.

“They all knew.”

No offense, but this thread hasn’t been about you for quite a while.

Museums are not America’s attic for its racist shit.

Let’s delete this post and never speak of this again.

You don’t get rid of your umbrella while it’s still raining.

So fucking stupid, and still doing a tremendous amount of damage.

“Facilitate” is an active verb, not a weasel word.

Giving in to doom is how authoritarians win.

Republicans got rid of McCarthy. Democrats chose not to save him.

Disagreements are healthy; personal attacks are not.

… pundit janitors mopping up after the gop

“Just close your eyes and kiss the girl and go where the tilt-a-whirl takes you.” ~OzarkHillbilly

Reality always lies in wait for … Democrats.

No Kings: Americans standing in the way of bad history saying “Oh, Fuck No!”

Part of Trump's 2016 appeal was that he was a way white America could debase the presidency so that a black man winning it was less meaningful. It was a statement from white people to black people: "our worst can do the same as your best." He doesn't have that behind him now.

Wasn’t going to but I started watching the new season of the Umbrella Academy on Netflix.  I was gonna wait until I could binge the entire season, but I ended up watching 5 out 10 episodes of Umberella Academy season 2 and it’s NOT ENOUGH!!! Now I’ve gotta go to bed, I got work tomorrow! DAMN WORK!

That’s less than 100 people on the tarmac at Tampa International. And that includes the half dozen or so Florida sheriffs who showed up to endorse him. That’s still an embarrassing turnout, even taking into account that all the yooper snowbirds are back in Michigan because of Florida’s summer heat

For me, one of the most hopeful recent events is when the Trump campaign hired the pollster known for producing ludicrously optimistic results. I think of it whenever Trump talks about great internal polls, or it’s reported that he said Stepien is “great with data.” Believing your own bullshit is essential to being a good con artist, but it’s fatal to a political campaign.

No doubt to assuage his shattered ego after that sheriff in Jacksonville basically put the kibosh on his convention. The article about peerages also notes elements of petty vindictiveness.

As widely anticipated, his nominations of ex-speaker John Bercow and his former deputy Tom Watson and Labour’s ex-general secretary Jennie Formby did not make it onto the final list after facing objections during vetting.

Bercow seemed to behave more honorably than many of his critics claimed, and also was often just damned entertaining.

An interesting little tidbit from the BBC.  Maybe those thinking about opening US schools should consider this as well.

Pubs or “other activities” in England may need to close to allow schools to reopen next month, a scientist advising the government has said.
Prof Graham Medley told the BBC there may need to be a “trade-off”, with the re-opening of schools seen as a “priority” for children’s wellbeing.

It came after England’s chief medical officer said the country was “near the limit” of opening up society.

    Drink up!

The speech had been proceeding for perhaps twenty minutes when a messenger hurried on to the platform and a scrap of paper was slipped into the speaker’s hand. He unrolled and read it without pausing in his speech. Nothing altered in his voice or manner, or in the content of what he was saying, but suddenly the names were different. Without words said, a wave of understanding rippled through the crowd. Oceania was at war with Eastasia! […] The thing that impressed Winston in looking back was that the speaker had switched from one line to the other actually in midsentence, not only without a pause, but without even breaking the syntax.

    • one person per household allowed to go shopping once per day within 5km of home
    • 1 hour exercise within 5 km – 2 people together only
    • curfew 8pm – 5 am unless going to care for someone or work
    • all school back to virtual classes
    • more tomorrow about what business can/cannot do

That’s from the press conference. I’ve probably missed some items. The state is declared as a disaster area. I think I saw that weddings are banned (not sure about that)

@TS (the original): That covers most of it. Funerals still allowed with max 10 people, I think. Weddings are indeed banned for the duration except possibly on compassionate grounds (e.g. someone not likely to live long enough to do it later). I’m a teacher and I’m simultaneously relieved and saddened by the school decision. I teach Year 11 & 12 so I’ve been at school full time. It’s been very surreal with all the students wearing masks all the time, and teachers when not actively teaching. I have so enjoyed actually being in the classroom with them for the start of Term 3, especially my Year 12s, but I’ve been very aware of the health risk it poses to me and my family (my school has students from all over Melbourne). I’m feeling preemptively exhausted at the thought of going back to remote learning, but that’s where we are. It’s the right call given how it seems to be getting out of control, but it’s going to be so hard for everyone. At least I and my wife (also a teacher) have pretty secure jobs; lots of people don’t have that right now.

At least this announcement came the day after my son’s tenth birthday. No party obviously, but a nice day for the three of us. Now it’s back to a none-too-pleasant reality.

Oh my. A bolognese is so much more than a meat sauce. Very light on the tomatoes, heavier on the soffritto, slow simmered with milk and wine, finished with cream.

@James E Powell: i would also cite his turn in The Natural as being noteworthy and he was never going to be a romantic lead  (excepting Cocoon) but in the right role, he was pretty damn good.  It’s so strange to watch Absence of Malice and see the likes of Newman and Fields and Balaban and that guy comes in for a scene that takes no more than five minutes and just embodies the ever lovin crap outta that role and steals the whole damn movie (imho)

The WaPo story cracks me up:

Trump briefly lamented his predicament during a taxpayer-funded event Friday in Florida that doubled as a political rally and a showcase of poor public health practices.

“We had an easy campaign, and then we got hit by the China virus,” Trump said as uniformed sheriff’s deputies stood behind him and a crowd of dozens of supporters huddled before him. Few people wore masks or practiced social distancing.

    Bold mine.

OTOH, pubs have been open nearly a month now without leading to any increase in cases where I live. Of course we’re a small market town where the pubs have generally been responsible.

@Mary G: a taxpayer-funded event Friday in Florida that doubled as a political rally and a showcase of poor public health practices.

I was afraid he flew in to personally coordinate the preparations for Isaias, and was thinking “haven’t the people of Florida have suffered enough?”

Thank goodness it was just his normal (illegal) use of taxpayer money and Air Force 1 for a campaign event, with his usual (immoral and insane) handling of the pandemic.

Just saw Bernie on MSNBC. He called on his supporters to work to get all their friends out to get Joe elected. He was good. He said it was no secret he had disagreements, but that’s “coalition politics,” something that never seemed to come naturally to him or his fans. He said next year we can work on making the Biden Administration the most progressive in history.

    @PST: Yep, that makes sense.

The thing to keep in mind there is, he has purged at least some of the Russia influence out of his inner circle, and that might have been the time Russia flipped on him. I keep tabs on some of the uber-lefties, the ones who were frothingly psycho about Elizabeth Warren, and what happened there was that they turned on Bernie: the official ‘leftier than thou’ take on Bernie now is that he has flipped and become the biggest evilest evil ever.

Which means they have nobody and are left making sad noises about how maybe they will get more progressive action, or at least stuff like unemployment insurance, out of Trump? Which of course is immediately and repeatedly made to look ridiculous by Trump himself, so they are rendered almost totally helpless.

All they have is to spread despair, and to demand that nobody listen to or investigate what Dems are actually doing. Basically, you have to be pilled to believe ’em, and they’ve had a breakup with Bernie: whose base of support is that much weaker, but also that much realer.

I’m pretty sure it means Bernie is also neutered politically, which I don’t think will dismay many people here. He stopped getting the support out of Russia when he cut ties with some of his less trustworthy people.

I keep asking my BernorBuster friends who are still bitching about Biden (mercifully fewer these days since I purged my FB account), “Bernie endorsed Joe Biden. Are you questioning his judgement?” Strangely, I never seem to get a straight yes or no in response.

@Jay: With my conservation on line I can believe that Germans have a really problem with Fascism. It’s hard to describe but a lot of German men have this weird obsession with rules being enforced and passivize to authority that almost comes across like their are Autistic.  Germans have also said things like they find that United flight were the passengers spontaneously attacked the hijackers as terrifying. So I take some heart that part of the reason Trump is a failure as a strong man is Americans in general make lousy good little Nazis just following orders.
