Malaysia’s daily numbers are climbing. 25 new cases. 16 cases from local infection, all but one Malaysians. 12 of these cases are from the new “Sivagangga” cluster in Kedah: 10 in Perlis, one in Penang state, one in Kedah itself. Nine imported cases: eight Malaysians, returning from the United Arab Emirates, Turkey, Australia, the Philippines (four), and Yemen; one non-Malaysian, arriving from Djibouti, east Africa. Cumulative reported total 9,063 cases.
The Ministry of Health reports that Perlis, which had only 28 reported cases as of yesterday and now has 38, is considering a temporary enhanced movement control order for areas affected by the new cluster. The Sivagangga cluster, whose index case returned from India and failed to comply with his quarantine order, is thought to involve a particularly contagious strain of the virus, but this has not been confirmed yet.
15 more patients recovered and were discharged. Total 8,728 patients recovered, 96.3% of the cumulative reported total. Active and contagious cases being isolated/treated in hospital rose to 210 patients; two are in ICU, one is on a respirator.
No new deaths. Total stands at 125 deaths, 1.38% of the cumulative reported total and 1.41% of resolved cases.

The US numbers in the Reuters tweet don’t look right. About 5 million cases, about 160,000 deaths. I suspect the death toll is higher grade given that when I look at various state numbers the deaths to total case numbers are between 0,5 and 1%.

Matt McIrvin
@Kirk Spencer: That’s about a 3% CFR, which makes some sense given that in the Northeast wave in the spring, infections were being grievously undercounted (and deaths were also being undercounted but probably not by as large a factor), which would tend to boost the apparent fatality rate.
There’s a countervailing effect which is that if there’s an outbreak exploding somewhere, it will tend to bring the apparent CFR down just because most of the sick people who are going to die haven’t died yet. When the current wave was taking off in Florida and Texas, you got some people saying “yeah, but look, the fatality rate is going down!” as if that meant something good.

Our next door neighbor, a fourth grade teacher at the elementary school, tells us the solution (I use that word loosely) our district has come up with is, families decide whether to send their kids in or do distance learning.
It’s all or nothing, none of this “three days distance, two days at school,” or whatever the convoluted schedules I keep hearing about.
Our neighbor will be teaching at the school, I wish him luck. And his youngest will be leaving soon for her first year at college at The Ohio State University. I wish her luck too.
Meanwhile, I worry if going for quick grocery shops more than once a week is too rash (maybe I should work on my meal planning instead of waiting until the last minute).

Scotland — sportsmen are being sportsmen here as well as in the US. The Scottish Football Association is trying to “bubble” major football teams so they can play games in empty stadiums. There was supposed to be a match between Aberdeen and St. Johnstone, it’s been called off after two Aberdeen players tested positive for COVID-19. It now transpires that eight Aberdeen players went to a pub together in Aberdeen at the weekend when the current pub-related outbreak started. The other six are self-isolating, supposedly. Bubble? What bubble?
It’s possible that all Scottish football might be called off now. It’s unlikely these players were the only ones that thought the rules didn’t apply to them, they just happened to break the rules in a way that meant they were majorly exposed to the virus.
In other Aberdeen news the outbreak cluster size is now up to 101. There were 43 new cases reported in Scotland in general, no new deaths from confirmed cases reported again.

The only reason why tRump can claim the U.S. has better numbers is because the R states have been cooking the books. Also, lack of adequate testing capacity means tons of cases are missing from the data. One person I know of (the boss of a close friend) caught it in February while in Europe and came home sick, became very ill and to this day can barely climb 2 flights of stairs because of the blood clots in his lungs. The first test he was given returned a false negative, and tests are in such short supply that his doctor just told him you obviously had it but we can’t ‘spend’ a test on you. So, his case, the case that has devastated him physically, has not been included in the totals because the reporting requirements are for positive testing results only.
