Great collection of international stories about the pandemic! Very useful! I don’t mean to be a cynic and all prognostication is folly but I bet we are closer to half a million fatalities in the US by Thanksgiving! And the most tragic aspect is that it didn’t have to be this way! Smart, disciplined societies can beat pandemics. Unfortunately, the US is neither.

I caught part of Governor Northam’s Covid-19 briefing this week. He said the overall test positivity rate in Virginia was down slightly at 7.2%. The rate in the eastern portion of the state was 10%. He emphasized that citizens cannot relax social distancing measures, that we are still in the the middle of the pandemic. I’ve seen little push-back against social distancing measures here, unlike in the story out of Lancaster Pa. But I haven’t looked too hard. The example of New York is heartening, shows what determined political leadership and an aware populace can do.

Malaysia’s daily numbers continue their up-and-down trend; today it’s down. Seven new cases. One case from local infection, a Malaysian detected in a workplace screening in Negeri Sembilan. The new Sivagangga cluster hundreds of km to the north had no new cases reported today, but that could change as more test results come in. Six imported cases: three Malaysians, returning from China, Yemen, and Myanmar; three non-Malaysians, arriving from Japan, Pakistan, and Mexico. Cumulative reported total 9,070 cases.
47 more patients recovered and were discharged, total 8,775 patients recovered or 96.8% of the cumulative reported total. That means a big drop in active and contagious cases being isolated/treated in hospital, to 170 patients; two are in ICU, one of them is on a respirator.
No new deaths since 31 July; the total remains at 125 deaths, 1.38% of the cumulative reported total and 1.40% of resolved cases.
Today the (federal) Government launched a public campaign to inculcate the new Covid-19 era normal into Malaysian society.

I wasn’t there, but even in the heavily censored days of WWII Hollywood, there was a lot more unity and sense about shared sacrifice and the public good.
Republicans are the opposite of that, starting with their embrace of outright racism, the greed and spite they use to prop it up, all culminating in the outright sociopathy towards American citizens they have gleefully displayed during this crisis.
It really is that scene in the 80s mini-series, V, where the Resistance corners the alien leader and rips off their false face to reveal the lizard beneath. (In case you were wondering where the lizard brain conspiracy theories came from.) The collaborators all yell “False news!”

The PA story is so depressing and demoralizing. This week I had to listen to a co-worker spout the same conspiracy theories mentioned in the comments along with one about Chinese scientists having created the virus. This week I was also walking on the main commercial street in Manchester, NH and had a driver lean out his car window and yell at me to take off my mask. We are completely failing as a country at even muddling through this pandemic. Failed leadership but also a failed culture of self centeredness. Sturgis is going to be a disaster, but New Hampshire is going to do it’s part by having it’s bike week which also draws hundreds of thousands of bikers the end of this month. Watch the New England numbers start to climb too. I’ve lost all hope.

So I get to the market and get treated to our market manager’s chirpy little weekly newsletter about how business is doing (it’s down a lot), but she thinks that the people who said they wouldn’t shop until the vendors all wear masks must be our weekday shoppers, not weekend (wrong), and that she knows there’s good reasons not to wear masks because they don’t protect the wearer (wrong), but if everyone would just please wear masks maybe we would get our previous customers back (at this point with the assholishness on display plus the economy, unlikely). I just read her the riot act about spreading misinformation. What a bullshit way to start the day.
Seriously, before this is over, I’m going to be serving time for murder.

Yesterday, China reported 25 new domestic confirmed cases and 8 new domestic asymptomatic cases, all at Ürumqi in Xinjiang “Autonomous” Region. 10 cases in critical condition, and 24 in serious condition. There are currently 640 confirmed cases (637 in Ürumqi, 1 each at Kashgar, Changji Prefecture and Xinjiang Construction Corps), and 127 asymptomatic cases (126 in Ürumqi, 1 in Changji Prefecture), plus 1 asymptomatic case exported to Shaoxing in Zhejiang Province. 28 confirmed cases recovered yesterday and were released from hospitals, 9 asymptomatic cases were released from medical quarantine. 2 serious cases have stabilized to moderate conditions. There are 20325 close contacts under quarantine and medical observation. According to Ürumqi CDC, DNA analysis shows that the outbreak there is caused by a single source, which is still unknown.
Dalian in Liaoning Province again did not report any new cases, confirmed or asymptomatic, yesterday. 4 confirmed case has recovered and was released from hospital, and an asymptomatic case was also released from medical quarantine. 1 serious cases, 75 moderate cases, and 11 mild cases are currently in the hospital.
All 355 patients from the Xinfadi outbreak in Beijing have recovered and been released from hospitals, and all true asymptomatic cases have been released from medical quarantine.
Yesterday, China reported 6 new imported confirmed cases, 6 imported asymptomatic cases, and 5 suspect cases:
Today, Hong Kong reported 69 new cases, 67 from local transmission.

@OzarkHillbilly: Thanks, I found her dashboard. She’s reporting a big drop. I didn’t see an explanation, though a doc commenting at her site pointed out that a significant number of hospitals (maybe about a quarter – I should’ve looked closer) stopped reporting once DHHS took over from CDC as a report repository.
Just fucking great.
Drdavechemist
@Chief Oshkosh: I also heard that the hurricane suspended/interrupted testing and/or reporting this week, which wouldn’t be active skullduggery but would still be obscuring what’s really going on.
Gvg
@Chief Oshkosh: Florida testing was shut down last weekend while the hurricane passed by, which would have meant fewer tests for several days. The state and counties aren’t the only ones giving tests so it’s not none, but it would be lower.
My sister said Harvard had the Florida numbers and that North Florida was now as bad as South Florida. I assume she meant per capital, because we don’t have the population.
The lab corporations say they are doing fewer tests to catch up on what has already been done and not processed. I had a test done a month ago that never gave me results. I had it redone at my University, I’m negative, but this is a sign of what’s going on. They just can’t handle the volume and they are recognizing it.

Today’s figures from the UK.
There have been 758 new cases, bringing the cumulative total to 309,763. These are broken down by home nation as follows:-
England – 679
Scotland – 60
Wales – 19
Northern Ireland – 0.
There were 55 new deaths (54 in England, 1 in Wales), bringing the total nationwide to 46,566.
There are 1067 people currently in hospital with a diagnosis of COVID-19.
The usual words of caution regarding these figures. This is a weekend so there will be delays in processing and reporting and I would expect figures for Monday and Tuesday to be higher as the delayed cases are included.
