I assume Geraldine Ferraro was talking about Maureen Dowd.
PaulB
Looks like someone at the FTFNY finally remembered 2016…
Baud
OTOH, it bodes well for the election that I’m seeing Maureen Dowd again in my information bubble. How soon before Andrea Mitchell appears with her stern look of concern and nod of disapproval?
Splitting Image
It’s already been edited. It now says:
“It’s hard to fathom, but it took another 36 years for a man to choose to put a woman on the Democratic ticket with him. To use Geraldine Ferraro’s favorite expression, “Gimme a break!”
Fortunately, voters have an alternative to the misogynist Democratic Party. The Republicans have consistently put women on their national tickets since 1984, or at least I assume they have, since Dowd doesn’t mention this as a failing of theirs.
Baud
@Splitting Image:
The GOP is more pro-woman because they made Sarah Palin a Veep candidate as recently as 2008. Doncha know?
debbie
@PaulB:
Like a chimpanzee flinging poo, fling Palin right back at her. ?
Jinchi
36 years?! The Trump presidency has seemed like it never ends, but even I didn’t guess it had gone on that long.
Ian
Remember that Dowd hates Clinton. I think Dowd also has some long term beef because a group of reporters gave her a mock award about her shit coverage of the Lewinski affair. So it wouldn’t be beyond Dowd to either A) not consider HRC a person, or B) pretend the whole last four years didn’t happen because she would have to admit some culpability for the trainwreck.
Baud
@Ian:
There’s going to be a lot of that going on next year.
Jinchi
The Times will quickly correct this to read “it’s been 36 years since a man ran for president with a woman on the ticket”, instead of, you know, just trashing the whole article.
Edit: And there it is
Benw
To be fair EVERYONE forgot about Kaine, even during the campaign!
geg6
JFC, are there no editors left at that goddam rag?
Calouste
It’s hard to fathom, that the New York Times is considered the paper of record, when they keep publishing trash like this.
Jinchi
@Benw: I admit to having to constantly look up the name of Hillary Clinton’s pick for Vice President.
Elizabelle
And the Democrats never ran and won with a non-white Anglo-Saxon male. Oh right …
O’Bambi!
Elizabelle
Also realize: that MoDo column made it through the FTF NY Times’ crack editing staff too. Assuming they read it.

@Ian: I go with Occam: She writes her columns in an alcoholic blackout.
Baud
I look forward to next week’s column about how Biden’s pick is a disappointment to all women.

So Hillary and Kaine don’t count as a man and a woman???
edit: and of course #2 got there first!
A Ghost to Most

different-church-lady
Hillary was a lesbian, so it doesn’t count.
Amir Khalid
I do remember with some amusement MoDo’s adventure avec pot-based edibles. Could one say that she was The FTFNYT’s Peggy Noonan?
Mo Salad
Maybe she had another full THC chocolate bar when she was only supposed to take a nibble to start and wait an hour.
ETA: Great minds think alike and also follow LFC, Amir. YNWA.
WaterGirl
@Splitting Image:
Thanks for the laugh.
Amir Khalid
@WaterGirl:
That was a woman choosing a man as her running mate, so of course it doesn’t count.
Ken
I’m sure it’s already written and submitted, with only a couple of blanks to fill in once we know the name.
lumpkin
Looks like Bennet’s top notch replacement is following in his footsteps.
Ken
@Elizabelle: You’re assuming the NYT has an editing staff. Most papers got rid of copy editors over a decade ago. Spell check’s enough, right?
Mo Salad
@Amir Khalid: I lost the race to the post researching whether she had a cookie, candy, or chocolate edible.
germy
Ken
@Mo Salad: The thing that’s always worried me about edibles is that MJ supposedly gives you the munchies. It sounds like an overdose waiting to happen – or at least a comic skit.
Baud
@germy: Good for her. Bring those receipts.
L85NJGT
It’s sui generis. The Grey Lady was firm in its support of Andrew Johnson.
Benw
@Baud: I am comforted that this is all in Chris Dodd’s capable hands
sdhays
@Elizabelle: Well, the head editor of the op-ed page resigned not long ago for not reading Tom Cotton’s ode to Hitler, so I assume the SOP for editors at the FTFNYT is to surf pron sites all day.
Baud
@Benw:
It’s not. It’s in Biden’s hands. And all the people being considered are excellent in their own right.
Another Scott
Oh, you rascals. You take everything so seriously. She’s actually quite liberal, you know. She pokes fun at everything – it’s her job and stuff.

So much of the article reminds me of the way Republicans bring up the democratic connection to the kkk 150 years ago. Sure Democrats are choosing a woman for vice president and have a lot of great women candidates now! But remember when they were just awful towards women!?! Doesn’t this just mean that women are chained to the stove on the democratic plantation or something?
WaterGirl
@lumpkin: There’s too much going on for me to track everything – If you would be so kind, can you supply a bit more information about what you’re referring to?

@geg6: lol They put in strong controls after Cotton was allowed to publish his trash. ???
Although I posted this below, it needs to be mentioned again.
From the Hoarse Whisperer
For the first time in 30 years, Maureen Dowd forgot about Hillary.

@SiubhanDuinne: I remember that like it was yesterday. It came on the car radio, I cheered, and my mother yelled at me.

I know we’re supposed to ve paying attention to 2020 but 2022 has Ron Johnson, Chuck Grassley , Pat Toomey, Rob Portman and Richard Burr up for reelection. I know midyear elections are supposed to be bad for the presidents party but there’s some nice opportunities there to get to 60 if we do good this year.

And since this is a politics related thread, I just want to share a cool tool from the group RunForSomething. You enter your name, address, and birthday and it tells you all the elected offices nearby that you can run for. If anyone here has the itch to run or knows anyone please use/share this around.

Wishing my fellow BJers a great weekend.
Nora
@Marcopolo: I just played with it, and while it suggested vice president of the U.S., it didn’t suggest I could run for mayor of my city or councilwoman for my city (it did suggest school board). Odd, huh?
Marcopolo
@Baud: I saw this yesterday. Good to know that our media learned its lesson about covering women participating in presidential campaigns from the crappy job they did covering Clinton in 2016.
The headline for the article she is criticizing reads: “It’s ‘The Bachelor: Campaign Trail.’ Which of Biden’s veep candidates deserves the rose?
Another Scott
@WaterGirl: At least for me, it work for every Twitter tab in the browser. One has to repeat it for every machine, of course.
Dunno if one has to do it again if one closes the browser – I haven’t tried that yet.
HTH!

@Mai naem mobile: i fully expect those to be open seats after we get done prosecuting those fuckers for treason….
Marcopolo
@Nora: Assume you tried 2021 as well as 2020 in the year. I suppose it is possible that: 1) it is too late to get your name on the ballot in 2020 & that most elected seats near you won’t be open until 2022. In the meantime, you still have a few days to make a pitch to Biden.

If we and Joe Biden should have the good fortune to win this election — are their any criminal laws that Trump’s corrupt postmaster can be held to account for? Or is all of this in the prerogative of the right to manage a government agency by a duly appointed postmaster general? Because he is clearly doing his best to corrupt democratic elections and I would like to see his ass thrown in jail.

I remember in ’08 when HRC teared up at a New Hampshire town meeting while talking about the problems the country was facing and how these issues were personal for her, MoDo quoted a female colleague at the Times (I think was the phrase she used) saying something about is she gonna cry about Osama bin Laden too? I’ve always had a hunch she was quoting herself.
Around that time I used to send her emails suggesting she needed a sabbatical. She never answered.

If that is the best we can do, then the first order of business for any democratic administration that can pass laws would be to put some hard-ass punishment into law for election interference. Because this won’t stop as long as there is a chance it will work and there is no punishment. It will keep going long past Trump.

Fuck, no. Twitter is the devil if they make you be logged in to twitter to see tweets. I bet they have no idea how negatively that will affect the impact that twitter has.

I thought I had heard that Richard Burr R-NC was retiring, and so that might be an open seat race. If OTOH Burr does run for re-election, he will have quite an inside self-dealing scandal hung around his neck – he took advantage of his access to classified info via his seat on the Senate Intelligence Committee to make some timely stock $ales ahead of public bad news about some company, and avoided a shit-ton of losses for his investment therein.

I will always regret the outcome of the 2016 election, for the Nation, for myself and for her. She was the Person who should have led us through the last four years, and especially the last 6-7 months. Hillary was not my choice in 2008, as I was angry with her over a threat to annihilate 75 million Iranians if the Mullahs attacked Israel. Over the top I thought, like Margaret Thatcher declaring war in the Falklands. To say nothing of the fact that I was in the bag for Barack Obama from the Keynote Speech at The 2004 Dem Convention
