bourbon (n.)
type of American corn whiskey, 1846, from Bourbon County, Kentucky, where it first was made, supposedly in 1789. Bourbon County was organized 1785, one of the nine established by the Virginia legislature before Kentucky became a state. The name reflects the fondness felt in the United States for the French royal family, and especially Louis XVI, in gratitude for the indispensable support he had given to the rebel colonists.

@dopey-o: MO #s come from the Missouri COVID-19 Dashboard: The Spread of COVID-19 in Missouri
It gives a pretty good overall picture, but the CoVid Project only gives it’s data a grade of B. KC, STL, the SW and the bootheel are the main hotspots, but there is an ebb and flow to the numbers so the “percentage increases” change week to week. Scotland — 47 new COVID-19 cases confirmed from yesterday. 24 of those cases are in the Grampian health board area where the Aberdeen outbreak is located. The current lockdown in the city will continue for another week, according to the First Minister who was speaking in the Parliament today, facing questions from the opposition parties.
No further deaths from confirmed COVID-19 infections were reported and hospitalisation numbers remain stable. From the update today on the National Records of Scotland website, “of the total number of deaths registered in week 32 (3 to 9 August), there were 5 where COVID-19 was mentioned on the death certificate.”

The “skeptics” believed the virus spread primarily via airborne droplets too large to hang suspended in the air, that would fall to earth fairly quickly after being shed – which was the justification the current 1.5-2 m “social-distancing” guidelines.
It was not as stupid a notion as some people seem to believe, particularly when it was discovered that SARS-CoV-2 dies off (maybe we should say “deactivates” since it’s not clear the stuff is actually alive) fairly quickly on surfaces (within minutes IIRC). That suggests the virus needs some protective covering to stay dangerous.
Aerosols are particles small enough not to fall immediately to earth, that can hang suspended in the air much longer & disperse over a much wider area. If Thuh Varss remains infectious when aerosolized, it means social distancing isn’t quite as effective in preventing transmission as was believed. It remains somewhat effective – some of the stuff will still emerge in ballistic droplets, and the concentration of virus from a single source of dispersal will decrease with distance – but the risk does not drop to zero. In environments with vigorous vertical circulation of air, aerosols will disperse upward, but will persist and concentrate in enclosed environments, particularly where the A/C is set to recirculate air that’s already been cooled (or warmed) to a temperature comfortable for humans.
The bottom line: Our best bet to keep from catching COVID-19 is to keep doing what we’re doing – masks, social distancing, avoid enclosed environments with high densities of H. sapiens – but with more emphasis on the last. If you have to encounter others who might be spreaders, do it outdoors.
(You’re very welcome!)

Morans.
YY_Sima Qian
@Yutsano: I don’t think it has registered, yet. Chinese media and academia are more focusing on the potential China policy of a Biden administration. The consensus is that Biden administration would be a mixed bag for China and the CCP regime. In the one hand, Biden will probably stabilize the Sini-US relationship, and seek to avoid a lose-lose Cold War 2.0 development, and grasp opportunities for mutually beneficial engagement (such as Climate Change and Pandemic response); on the other hand, Biden will likely continue to be confrontational with China on areas of sharp disagreement (of which there are many and growing), seek to contain and constrain China, and possibly be more effective at it by rallying more support among western nations. On the one hand, Biden will likely slow the decline of the US, and potentially address some of the debilitating issues plaguing the country; on the other hand, Biden is unlikely to actually arrest the relative decline of the US, any more than Obama was able to do so. That is the general consensus opinion I have read. I don’t think people in China, average citizens or political and intellectual elites, knows anything about Kamala Harris.
I personally like Senator Harris a great deal, and think it is an outstanding pick.
Yutsano
@YY_Sima Qian: Thanks for the answer. We’ll have to see regarding the American decline. It would take dislodging the dollar as the major reserve currency (not going to happen any time soon) and getting a military that could match the US in land, sea, or air. But America probably isn’t going to fade that far especially when we figure out how to keep people like Drumpf from even getting close to taking office in the first place. But yes there will be a lot of work that a Biden administration will have to do. I just pray that we also have the tools in Congress to make that happen.
Also: Kamala vs Kampala is going to be a bugaboo typo for at least the next few months. Who knew the capital of Uganda would cause such a kerfuffle?
