Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Something needs to be done about our bogus SCOTUS.

Reality always lies in wait for … Democrats.

I’d try pessimism, but it probably wouldn’t work.

We’ve had enough carrots to last a lifetime. break out the sticks.

They traffic in fear. it is their only currency. if we are fearful, they are winning.

Is it irresponsible to speculate? It is irresponsible not to.

Bark louder, little dog.

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

Anyone who bans teaching American history has no right to shape America’s future.

Not all heroes wear capes.

You can’t love your country only when you win.

Let us savor the impending downfall of lawless scoundrels who richly deserve the trouble barreling their way.

It’s the corruption, stupid.

Technically true, but collectively nonsense

It’s always darkest before the other shoe drops.

Yeah, with this crowd one never knows.

Sitting here in limbo waiting for the dice to roll

Russian mouthpiece, go fuck yourself.

Thanks to your bullshit, we are now under siege.

I wonder if trump will be tried as an adult.

Republicans don’t want a speaker to lead them; they want a hostage.

I know this must be bad for Joe Biden, I just don’t know how.

Battle won, war still ongoing.

They’re not red states to be hated; they are voter suppression states to be fixed.

One of the compensations of the Covid Time is that some things become available to us that otherwise would have been impossible to get to. I’m participating in a seminar at the other end of the country and a happy hour with interesting people from all over, for example.

And this week, the Democratic Convention.

Yes, some of it would be carried on television, but you’ll be able to dip in any time you want. Here’s the schedule. I’ve bolded people that Juicers will particularly want to hear from and my faves. All times in EDT.

The events will stream online at the DNC’s website, and on social media sites such as YouTube and Facebook. You can also tune on the major broadcast networks, ABC, CBS and NBC,  which plan to carry an hour of the convention live each night, from 10 to 11 p.m. on the East Coast.

I’m a delegate – woot! First time. We’ve already cast our votes for the nominee and platform. A few Bernie supporters are voting no on the platform because it doesn’t include the magic words “Medicare for All,” but I think they’re pissing in the wind.

I am pleasantly surprised about how buoyed I feel about the Biden/Harris ticket. I like our chances, despite Republican chicanery. They’ve overplayed their hand. People don’t like having their voting rights suppressed and I think we’ll see massive turnout as a result. Oh, and we’re working our asses off to make sure that happens.

Quite a contrast from this leaked Republican Convention schedule:

Monday – “The Greatest President Ever” – introduction, Jared Kushner; speaker, President Donald Trump (6:00 PM – 9:30 PM)

Tuesday – “The Sexiest President Ever” – introduction, Ivanka Trump; speaker, President Donald Trump (6:00 PM – 9:30 PM)

Wednesday – “The Impressivest President Ever” – introduction, Donald Trump Junior; speaker, President Donald Trump (6:00 PM – 9:30 PM)

Thursday – “The First Anointed President Ever” – introduction, Mike Pence; officiant, Jerry Falwell Jr.; speaker, God-King Donald Trump (6:00 PM – 9:30 PM)

    @Ken:
First Lady Melania Trump and several of Trump’s adult children will speak on Tuesday, Aug. 25. Other speakers during the convention will include Republican Sens. Tim Scott of South Carolina and Joni Ernst of Iowa, former Trump ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy of California.

Trump will be the central focus of the convention on each of the four days, organizers said, a plan that breaks with the long-standing tradition of waiting until the last day of the convention to showcase the presidential nominee.

@germy: Yeah, I’d seen that report and was riffing on it.  I was also allowing for a few more prominent Republicans to remember that they had to wash their hair that week – I expect Joni Ernst is weighing whether appearing with Trump will be a net gain or loss.

    https://thehill.com/homenews/house/512200-pelosi-weighing-bringing-house-back-from-august-recess-early-over-usps-issues

Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and House Democratic leadership are considering returning from August recess as early as next week to consider legislation addressing issues at the U.S. Postal Service (USPS), Democratic aides confirmed to CNN and Politico.

The chamber is currently in recess, with no votes scheduled until the week of Sept. 14, though they could reportedly return to vote within the next two weeks.

“Yes there are discussions to bring the House back to address the Postal Service crisis, timing not clear yet. Next week and week after (are) being discussed,” one aide told CNN after a Saturday call with party leadership.

    […]

Democrats are reportedly discussing legislation that would build upon a bill introduced by House Oversight Chair Carolyn Maloney (D-N.Y.) earlier this week. The legislation would forbid the Postal Service from making changes that Democrats and critics say would hinder mail-in voting.

Democrats are also considering including language in the bill that requires all ballot deliveries to have first class status.

Postmaster General Louis Dejoy, a GOP donor and Trump appointee, recently made sweeping policy changes such as adjusting delivery policies and reassigning or displacing over 20 agency officials including two top officials in charge of day-to-day operations.

A USPS watchdog on Friday announced that Dejoy’s policies were undergoing review after Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) requested an inquiry into the changes.

House action could include prohibiting the Post Office from changing mail sorting devices, preventing the closure of postal facilities, stopping efforts to prohibit overtime pay and ensuring expedient mail delivery, according to the source familiar with the matter, CNN reported.

    […]

    Good, good.

I mean it’s ridiculous that administrators have to be told – in no uncertain terms – that wrecking their agency and destroying its purpose is not why they’re there, but it’s good that they’re putting a bill together and are going to vote on it.

    Cheers,
    Scott.

Because the Democrats planned on a virtual convention, the convention has great speakers, great entertainment, and will undoubtedly come off with minimal glitches. Because the Republicans couldn’t part with the whole live convention thing, they’re throwing theirs together at the last minute, and it will show.

And there they are – one right after the other for contrast.

I don’t want to be pissed at my own party. So please, Nancy, bring everyone back.  This week, if possible. Next week, if not. Hearings as soon as the House Oversight Committee can get a quorum.  In prime time, as David Plouffe recommends.

BUT: She won a district that is solidly Democratic and she parachuted into Kansas to back a Bernie bro running against Sharice Davids. Fortunately Sharice beat AOC’s candidate and BEAT the Republican in the general, flipping the vote by about 17 points.

HOWEVER: AOC has been good about backing Pelosi in her plays and she passive/aggressively complained about her minute, quoting a poem about it. So a minute for a first term Congressperson? Sounds about right.

When I was a delegate to the DNC in 2012, on the night of the vote (half-hour speeches by each state) we got to the arena and there were “Reserved” signs on most of the seats we’d been sitting in all week.  While the one-night political luminaries from our state hogged the good seats, near the podium, most of us ordinary delegates – whose votes the luminaries would report and speechify about – had to sit two states away.

As I remember, our state’s report was given by the Speaker of the Assembly, who was later indicted for corruption and, I think, is currently in jail.

    Lyz Lenz @lyzl 11h
This is cedar rapids, Iowa. Where we have gone FIVE FULL DAYS without a coordinated local, state or federal response to this disaster. On Monday, our governor says she’ll submit a federal proclamation. ONE FULL WEEK of people living as refugees.

It might not be good politics for Joni Ernst to be giving a speech that, I’m sure, is vetted to make sure nothing distracts from puffing up the Presidential ego, like talking about what bad shape much of Iowa is in. Judging from my own politics-dominated media bubble– MSNBC, NPR, twitter– this story isn’t getting enough attention.

    FYI (NYT link).

The Trump campaign is launching an aggressive four-day digital advertising campaign that will take over some of the internet’s most conspicuous real estate during the three marquee days of the Democratic National Convention, which most viewers will watch online.

Adhering to the president’s penchant for focusing attention on himself during major Democratic events, the Trump campaign will be taking over the banner of YouTube for 96 hours starting on Tuesday, the second day of the convention, an expensive and far-reaching digital gambit.

The campaign will also blanket the home pages of The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post and FoxNews.com with Trump campaign ads. Even non-D.N.C. programming will be inundated with Trump ads, as the campaign has bought premium, or “unskippable,” ads on sites like Hulu.

The campaign amounts to “high-seven figures,” a significant sum to spend online in such a short period of time, and could top $10 million based on the engagement metrics of some ads (a few digital ads are sometimes charged extra based on engagement). The takeover of the YouTube banner and the news sites’ home pages are national buys, while the spending for Hulu and others will be in swing states. Source

@Groucho48: This schedule is erasure of Tom Steyer!  What does is say about the “big tent” of the Democratic Party when they ignore Steyermaniacs!

@NotMax: The Trumpublican Convention will climax by dropping 99,000 Griftballoons, each with a commemorative 1-ruble note inside featuring Mango Mussolini’s mugly ug. (Total cost <$2,000 – these are cheap barstids.)

@Ken: If one should occur to me in the course of this thread, it most certainly will. At which time you will be cordially invited to whine your no-taste-in-humor arse off about it.

    And if not, not. :^p

@SiubhanDuinne: As if Trump has feelings like a normal person.

I commend Joe for writing that, but I’ll bet Trump’s first, second, third, fourth and fifth thoughts were about how his brother’s death was going to affect Donald J. Trump.

    @Yutsano:

So…they’re going to try to persuade the people who are watching the Democratic convention to install ad blockers?

And to make sure that people watch the convention somewhere other than on YouTube. Don’t open the Washington Post, don’t watch Hulu, etc.
