Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

JFC, are there no editors left at that goddamn rag?

Impressively dumb. Congratulations.

Good lord, these people are nuts.

Peak wingnut was a lie.

The cruelty is the point; the law be damned.

The arc of history bends toward the same old fuckery.

Is it negotiation when the other party actually wants to shoot the hostage?

Today’s GOP: why go just far enough when too far is right there?

A democracy can’t function when people can’t distinguish facts from lies.

My years-long effort to drive family and friends away has really paid off this year.

They love authoritarianism, but only when they get to be the authoritarians.

And now I have baud making fun of me. this day can’t get worse.

When do we start airlifting the women and children out of Texas?

A sufficient plurality of insane, greedy people can tank any democratic system ever devised, apparently.

Putting aside our relentless self-interest because the moral imperative is crystal clear.

A last alliance of elves and men. also pet photos.

Come on, media. you have one job. start doing it.

I’ve spoken to my cat about this, but it doesn’t seem to do any good.

I didn’t have alien invasion on my 2023 BINGO card.

Something needs to be done about our bogus SCOTUS.

The republican caucus is already covering themselves with something, and it’s not glory.

Their freedom requires your slavery.

Consistently wrong since 2002

But frankly mr. cole, I’ll be happier when you get back to telling us to go fuck ourselves.

Reminder, for chroniclers of Donald the (Im)Prudent:

… Many ships were wrecked on the coasts of Scotland and Ireland and more than a third of the initial 130 ships failed to return. As Martin and Parker explain, “Philip II attempted to invade England, but his plans miscarried. This was due to his own mismanagement, including the appointment of an aristocrat without naval experience as commander of the Armada, but also to unfortunate weather, and the opposition of the English and their Dutch allies, which included the use of fireships sailed into the anchored Armada.”…

J. Hogan Gidley, “National Press Secretary Donald J. Trump for President”, admires another man’s thigh tattoo:

Epic: I attended my FIRST, EVER @realDonaldTrump boat parade this past weekend in Clearwater, FL and it did NOT disappoint. These videos and pics do not come close to doing it justice but it was amazing. Thanks to all those freedom-loving patriots who made it happen. God bless! pic.twitter.com/dPusa4O2hq

Do not joke with Trumpsters you know about his oleandrin cure, you might end up in court on a charge of some kind of manslaughter. That is a very seriously powerful deadly cardiac toxin if not used very carefully. Commenter Sab in previous thread says the experimental drug is made from flowers not other parts of oleander species plants, so maybe not so powerful as other forms. But generally that shit is super dangerous, and you think his dumbass followers will be careful?

The pandemic is having an impact on a country’s elections.

The prime minister of New Zealand, Jacinda Ardern, has postponed the country’s general election by a month amid a spike in coronavirus cases.
The vote was due to take place on 19 September but will now be held on 17 October instead.

Ms Ardern said on Monday that the new date would allow parties “to plan around the range of circumstances we will be campaigning under”.

Earlier this week, the country’s largest city went back into lockdown.

“This decision gives all parties time over the next nine weeks to campaign and the Electoral Commission enough time to ensure an election can go ahead,” Ms Ardern said, adding that she had “absolutely no intention” of allowing any further delays to the vote.

The opposition National Party has argued the election should be delayed as restrictions on campaigning mean Ms Ardern had an unfair advantage.

Every time their has been an outbreak in another country there are doom and gloom reports in the US about how hard it all is and report it like their shit is all falling apart. But guess what? They control the outbreak. S Korea, Hong Kong, Singapore, Germany, Greece, Denmark, Australia. Croatia is only country that had a resurgence that threatened to wipe out their whole control effort and be as bad as their first wave. But they controlled it. Wasn’t in the news because US media are useless slobs but if they wanted a scare story they should have written about that.

Worst outbreaks now are due to corporations negligent in worker safety: Spain, Poland…

Yeah, that particular myth was invented back when a dark-haired Spanish lord was considered ‘more respectable’ than a mere Irish peasant immigrant.

The dark-haired, blue-eyed Irish folk (like both my parents), if not actually ‘the original Picts’, were around long before the red-headed  (like me) Viking invaders.

Insufficiently known fact:  The archetypically ‘Irish’ surname Finnegan, as in Finnegan’s Wake, means ‘son of the fair-haired foreigner’.

Oleanders are planted, extensively in Florida along roadsides as they are drought tolerant. We were taught as kids that you had to throw away the trimmings and never ever burn them because the smoke was poisonous. I didn’t want to deal with all the cautions so I’ve never planted one. There are several nice plants that seemed too much worry to be worth it. On the roadsides though I don’t think they are trimmed.

Harbors are relatively small and too much speed creates too much wake. Not wake as in not asleep but wake as in can fill a small boat with water. It’s the primary reason that there are pretty slow speed limits in harbors. Yes I owned a 30ft sailboat that I sailed in the pacific. Also most boats do not have the degree of control like a car so more room is needed to manage. A 30 ft sail boat is bigger than a car but at slow speed handles more like a motorcycle with flat tires than a car and while a car accident can be disastrous there are seat/shoulder belts, air bags and a crush frame around you and you aren’t near as likely to drown if there is an accident. A group of drunk – and I’m considering some of them must drink a lot, to get a tattoo like that – people who don’t give a shit about others, and who would get a tattoo like that don’t give two shits about themselves.

That tattoo is pretty horrifying. Who would want Trump tattooed on his body? Let alone a horribly angry Trump with face tattoos?  And the tattoos are interesting.  MAGA, Self Made are prominent (and also pretty insane).  2020 on the chin, but other things are even more interesting.  There are a couple of  illuminati symbols above and to the right of his right eye, and on his left cheek a goat head — which I don’t get at all.

If you look closely though, you will see the tattoo artist had the last laugh, shaping his hair like a dead duck, with the bill just above his right ear and the eye just above that, the body lying across his scalp with the feet above the outer part of his left eye and ear.

I have seen tattoos emblematic of a person’s inner struggle with sanity before, and this one ranks right up there — horrifying mishmash of mental incoherence and turmoil, and distressing to look at.

@patrick II: There are a couple of illuminati symbols above and to the right of his right eye, and on his left cheek a goat head — which I don’t get at all.

I think the Illuminati symbols have something to do with QAnon. And the goat could be a ‘Greatest Of All Time’ callback?

But this is pure guesswork on my part, assuming that anyone who’d get a  Trump tattoo that large would also be hospitable to (shall we say) related hard-for-sane-people-to-decipher gestures…

Coast Guard in Ohio announced it has had a record number of search and rescue operations this number, attributable in part to record number of new boat owners. Newbies in boats on a great lake. What could go wrong?

It’s kind of depressing that my “happy place” is wishing for a latter-day* Kevin Uxbridge to deal with the Republican officeholders and their supporters/voters.

    * Although I guess, technically, he’s from the future, not the past.

I see that phrase, and I think about submarine bases in Kansas. I mean, I guess the Ohioans consider the lake shore a “coast,” but, seriously? There’s a 200-plus-acre pond in my town; maybe I should call the local beach the “coast”?

    @Anne Laurie:

The Knights Templar were condemned for worshiping a goat, often shown in the form of a goat’s head. I looked it up after.
Knights Templar had nothing to do with Illuminati, but you are probably right, it’s Qanon and to them that makes little difference.

@opiejeanne: …every summer we’d hear on the news that some kid would ingest castor beans and die, or nearly die as a result.

In backgrond reading for a report for USAMRMC about ricin, I read that at one time castor beans (possibly lacquered, don’t recall) were set as “stones” in cheap rings distributed in the USA. Sometimes a small kid would get hold of one & chew the “stone” off & swallow it. If the bean had gone down whole, it would pass through the GI tract & be excreted without any effect; but if it had been chewed on & its skin broken….

Needless to say, after a few kids died, those rings were banned very quickly.

@Anne Laurie: There is no truth to the rarely-repeated rumor that the song “I Get Around” was dedicated to the Norsemen, but it could have been.

I have friends from Germany & the Czech Republic with flaming red hair; there’s numbers of them on the old amber trade route from the Baltic source to Constantinople (did you know that Kievan Rus was founded by Vikings?); and there even are a bunch of fair-haired and -skinned Sicilians dating from ca. 1100-1250 CE, when la Trinacria was ruled by a series of Norman kings (did you know that the Sicilian Vespers and the origin of the Mafia date from disrespect shown to a native lady one Sunday after Mass by a member of the Norman nobility?).

@OzarkHillbilly: Adjusting for population, to get into the same Covid conversation as NZ, our current cases would have to be in the neighborhood of 5412.

ETA: and now I’m going back to bed in the vain hope that I can resume my charlie horse interrupted sleep.

I get that too some nights, and other times I get painful numbness in one or both hands… fortunately I very rarely get both cramps and the numbness/tingling/pain in my hands at the same time… it is very miserable at 3 am!

Usually if I can get up and stretch some, drink some water, etc, I can go back to sleep… but not always.
