Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Insiders who complain to politico: please report to the white house office of shut the fuck up.

If America since Jan 2025 hasn’t broken your heart, you haven’t loved her enough.

Dear legacy media: you are not here to influence outcomes and policies you find desirable.

It’s a good piece. click on over. but then come back!!

We still have time to mess this up!

The Supreme Court cannot be allowed to become the ultimate, unaccountable arbiter of everything.

These are not very smart people, and things got out of hand.

Lick the third rail, it tastes like chocolate!

Republicans choose power over democracy, every day.

Every decision we make has lots of baggage with it, known or unknown.

The truth is, these are not very bright guys, and things got out of hand.

Russian mouthpiece, go fuck yourself.

Since when do we limit our critiques to things we could do better ourselves?

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

I swear, each month of 2025 will have its own history degree.

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires Republicans to act in good faith.

We can’t confuse what’s necessary to win elections with the policies that we want to implement when we do.

Red lights blinking on democracy’s dashboard

Come on, man.

fuckem (in honor of the late great efgoldman)

If a good thing happens for a bad reason, it’s still a good thing.

This must be what justice looks like, not vengeful, just peaceful exuberance.

She burned that motherfucker down, and I am so here for it. Thank you, Caroline Kennedy.

Keep the Immigrants and deport the fascists!

MSNBC had minimal, short interruptions last night, but there is a permanent chyron at the bottom on the screen.

I watched the official Democrat Party streaming site and had no complaints, and loved the lack of interruption. Of course if I wanted to run to the bathroom or get a snack I might miss something.

I don’t know if this was MSNBC or the DNC feed, but on MSNBC, they would sometimes reduce the video size to put on bio information about a speaker.  It usually stayed up for less than a minute.

@Baud: Was that annoying?  I would think it might be.

Also, with 17 people in less than an hour, that’s only 3 minutes apiece at best, assuming they all get the same amount of time, which they won’t.

Wondering if that would be helpful with a lot of folks we might not recognize, or annoying because something will be up on the screen nearly all the time?

Pretty amazing line up of speakers every night. I notice that Bill Clinton is tonight, along with both Carters, AOC (is that the infamous 60-second slot?), Chuck Schumer, John Kerry and other familiar names. Tomorrow we have Hillary, Nancy Pelosi, Elizabeth Warren, Kamala Harris and President Obama.

It’s so heartwarming to realize just how many great people we have on our side. You could arguably drop any one of those convention speakers into the hot seat in the Oval Office and they’d pull together a great team and do a creditable job. But I wouldn’t trust any Republican at the national level to watch my dog for the weekend.

They’re probably also keeping track of whether or not you cut away to surf other sites or check your email. And if you have Alexa, they’re also monitoring your conversation and how many potty breaks you take.

Not that I’m paranoid or anything. Just don’t see the point in bugging my own house just so I can talk to my speaker.

I thought the MSNBC coverage was good. Few interruptions and what there were seemed rational. I like the chemistry of Joy, Nicolle and Rachel and hope they’ll be anchoring again tonight.

My long-suffering husband slept through most of it. Poor guy. He’ll vote the straight Dem ticket so doesn’t understand the fascination. Good thing I have y’all to talk to about it.

Another of my arcane fascinations: campaign messaging. I did an online survey with a burner email to get Trump campaign emails, and the tone between Trump campaign outreach and Biden’s messaging is…like two different species. I’d almost say the Trump stuff is in Klingon (original series), but that would be a grave injustice to Klingons since they had honor. It’s just so aggro! Example:

I need you on my team now more than ever.

The Radical Democrats are hosting their 2020 National Convention this week with the theme “Uniting America.”

These phonies are using their dancing puppet, Joe Biden, and the word “unity” to distract the American People from what they’re really trying to do: create a radical socialist America.

We can’t let that happen. It’s up to us to protect this Nation from that dark fate, and I need YOU to step up.

SIGN UP FOR OUR NATIONAL WEEK OF TRAINING TODAY AND HELP US STOP A RADICAL TAKEOVER.

It’s always doomy and whiny like that. Never anything upbeat or uplifting. All rage, all the time. Not surprising, but striking nonetheless.

It was sort of interesting afterward to hear some of their editorial page writers who I normally only read in “print” (or what passes for it on the internet).

The best part was there were no interruptions by talking heads spewing bullshit.

Bingo.  They do not add value.  Judy Woodruff should get the memo.

It would be great to forego in person conventions (for the masses and delegates, if not the business and platform meetings) in the future.  It’s a lot of money that can be better spent.

I  just looked at your link to  PBS streaming, and it’s not the same as what we saw on TV.  Quick look, but it appears to be the whole convention, presented straight.

I don’t know if my comment was the reason for putting the link to the PBS streaming under “Annoying”  “(commentators)” ?    The link above seems fine–I could be wrong about it but I don’t see the annoying commentators of the TV show.

Four years ago we watched the DNC party with great interest, and I saw Andrea Mitchell Greenspan tell us lies about what we had just watched speakers say.

I couldn’t believe my eyes/ears, we watched and heard what the speaker said, and then Ms Mitchell Greenspan told us our eyes and ears were lying to us. Will never trust that ancient crone to tell anyone the truth about anything, ever again.

We watched MSNBC’s stream, and during the part we watched, there was about 180 seconds of Rachael Maddow telling us what was coming up, tiny inserts between actual speakers or events on stage. Not a bother to us, esp. compared to their shitty coverage of the DNC in Philly last election cycle. Which was terrible!!!

According to this, their digital livestream is the full convention and is separate from Judy Woodruff, who was anchoring for PBS’s television Newshour with “reports from the floor, podium and outside the venue.”  David Brooks and another dreadful guy were among the  jerk commentators with her last night.   We were all complaining about Woodfuff’s show, not the livestream.
