Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

We are builders in a constant struggle with destroyers. let’s win this.

I’m pretty sure there’s only one Jack Smith.

The truth is, these are not very bright guys, and things got out of hand.

Do not shrug your shoulders and accept the normalization of untruths.

Republicans seem to think life begins at the candlelight dinner the night before.

“Jesus paying for the sins of everyone is an insult to those who paid for their own sins.”

Teach a man to fish, and he’ll sit in a boat all day drinking beer.

Why is it so hard for them to condemn hate?

Come on, man.

Not so fun when the rabbit gets the gun, is it?

Perhaps you mistook them for somebody who gives a damn.

A lot of Dems talk about what the media tells them to talk about. Not helpful.

American History and Black History Cannot Be Separated

If senate republicans had any shame, they’d die of it.

Just because you believe it, that doesn’t make it true.

Red lights blinking on democracy’s dashboard

You don’t get to peddle hatred on saturday and offer condolences on sunday.

Thanks to your bullshit, we are now under siege.

Sadly, there is no cure for stupid.

I was promised a recession.

Shallow, uninformed, and lacking identity

They’re not red states to be hated; they are voter suppression states to be fixed.

Schmidt just says fuck it, opens a tea shop.

I really should read my own blog.

Edward Good, a 95-year-old WWII and Korea War veteran, is a lifelong Republican who voted for Donald Trump in 2016, but he is now backing Joe Biden: “I think Trump has been the worst president we’ve ever had, so I’ll be glad to see him go.” https://t.co/6DLWHOY082 #DemConvention pic.twitter.com/bUZEOekQNb

And for those who wondered about the effectiveness of tonight’s targeting, note the sender here:

In 2016, Jon Meacham compared Trump supporters to terrorists hijacking an airplane. Inviting him to speak is further proof that Joe Biden despises working-class Americans.#DemConvention

These kids are adorable. I love watching kids.

I think this is an appeal to the female demographic — a rather much softer approach than trying to terrify them about their low income neighbors.

Something like 2/3 of Biden voters are voting AGAINST Trump. So I think so much of the convention building up Biden is the way to go.

“Too much anger” says Biden. Saw a poll that 51% of Americans are “very angry”, far higher than any other time the question was asked in the CNN poll.

    @Geoduck:

I read an article recently claiming that there have been surprisingly few COVID clusters centered around air travel, possibly because with modern systems the air on board gets entirely recycled every few minutes.

    Some salient points:

    1. historically, we’ve all been told (and I’d guess there’s some research behind it) that in fact the opposite is true for respiratory infections: that being in a plane is a great way to get a cold or flu from other passengers.  It seems kind of ….. suspicious that all of a sudden, there are people claiming “nopes, covid don’t work like that” when many of the interventions that protect us against covid, also do so against flu/cold.
    2. This really early days: we were also told that kids don’t get it, and kinds don’t spread it, and soon as we start reopening schools, voila! we find out that both of those are wrong.

What I’m saying is: it’s a little early to be making judgments like “It’s safe to sit around unmasked a foot away from other passengers” when we really don’t know enough to say, and we’ve purposely shut down air travel (between the companies and countries, and the passengers themselves).  And certainly history gives no good reason to expect that air travel is safe in this regard.

Maybe someday they’ll make premium ice cream infused with a statin.

Yes.  It’s not like Trump goes back in private and becomes suddenly intelligent, reasonable, or sane.  I attribute a lot of the most public actions of the administration – particularly the goon squad in Portland – as attempts by his aides just to get Trump to stop yelling at them.  Lunatic shit like the Ukraine pressure campaign is because Trump is so stupid he really believes the proof that Hillary is a criminal who framed him is there.

Did I mention he’s actually a PRC intelligence asset who travels on an Emirati passport and his assignment was to infiltrate as many major American conservative groups and financial benefactors as possible?

The Emirati passport is important too as the Emirati crown prince is a bridging and controlling node in a network that runs from the UAE to Saudi and MBS to DC and Jared as the Emirati crown prince is a mentor to both MBS and Jared. @bluehill: If the person who we think is now doing the drops is the actual person doing the drops, then yes.

And the violence is beginning to increase. And once the bulk of the 11 or so QAnon adherent GOP candidates get to Congress it will get worse. This and the Proud Boy/Patriot Prayer/Oathkeeper/Militia nexus all wrapped within MAGA/Trumpism is the future of the GOP because the only young people willing to be involved in the GOP are the people adhering to these beliefs. This will make it easier for Cotton to beat Hawley in becoming the next leading Republican because Hawley doesn’t have the angry, nasty persona that Cotton does.

Biden has decades of experience and he can and does draw on that. It’s the flip side of getting older. The reward. He doesn’t have to “think on his feet” as much because he knows a lot. I see it in older lawyers and it’s really true. They just don’t have to work so hard at staying ahead of others because they really, really know the content. Biden wasn’t breaking a sweat in those debates and a lot of the younger people were busting ass.

Ugh. The Washington Post feed had a reporter in the parking lot interviewing people after the fireworks. One woman said that she was supporting Joe but sort of shrugged about the Democrats. Of course, the reporter jumped on this. The woman then said that she wanted more about racial equity (OK) and wished that there was something specific about black women’s health and infant mortality. And I was just, woman, they talked about this last night! Do you not know that you just gave permission to people to shit on the ticket?

I’m just fed up with the rose crowd. Trump is actively killing Black women and children (along with the men). Harris has specifically spoken to black maternal mortality. But I guess she did her “research.” She apparently works with an advocacy group in Delaware. Would love to know how they will react to her interview.

The fight to defund the police will be long and hard. It will take enormous activism to get it done in one major city and then will have to spread out from there. It is going to be one local election and union contract at a time, every one a battle. I can see so many upset that it hasn’t happen already. Sigh.

But there do seem to be a lot of people who understand what a brutal slow slog this will be. Looking forward to helping them.

They basically stalked this woman here because they believed she had been trafficked out of Milwaukee as a child and sent to South America. They made this connection because there was a real little black girl who disappeared in Milwaukee so they just combined these two real people and jammed them into the conspiracy. The dates were all wrong, and the woman denied it, but they got enough traction locally that the sheriff (stupidly) got involved and the woman eventually consented to DNA testing just so they would leave her the fuck alone. She was, of course, not the person missing from Milwaukee and that’s the last I heard.

@Adam L Silverman: It would make sense that people with agendas greater than getting clicks and views on YouTube would want to force the creators out.

You’ve probably seen this before, but I found it interesting when I came across it today – https://www.nbcnews.com/tech/tech-news/how-three-conspiracy-theorists-took-q-sparked-qanon-n900531 (from 2018):

Meanwhile, Diaz kept making videos, racking up hundreds of thousands of views. Over the next several months, Diaz and the two moderators picked up tens of thousands of followers on Reddit and YouTube and added even more moderators to their 8chan and Reddit boards.

They also began to break into what might be considered the mainstream of the conspiracy world. Conspiracy theorist Dr. Jerome Corsi, an Infowars editor and a best-selling author of books about the “deep state,” had taken an interest in Q and was decoding the messages on the Reddit board. In December, Pamphlet Anon and BaruchtheScribe even made an appearance on InfoWars.

Corsi has since disavowed the Qanon conspiracy and called the current Q poster “a fraud,” citing a supposed takeover of the channel by someone posing as Q in April. But last week, facing backlash from his base, Corsi tweeted that he supports the Qanon movement and its supporters’ “excellent research.”

Soon, as Diaz explained on her blog, their expanding crew was spending all their waking hours in chat rooms on the gaming-focused forum Discord analyzing and decoding Q messages and planning for a larger dissemination of Q’s message.

It’s hard to see this thing surviving as a unified entity, but even if it splits up it will be dangerous to civil societies.

@Kattails: We can’t. We’ve got the decade long discussed epistemic closure problem now combined with an epistemic overload problem. People who join new religions and cults, and the dividing line is not always clear between the two, as well as those who adopt conspiracy theories to help them make sense of the world and their lives are in many ways cognitively and emotionally like people who have been conned. Trying to get them to understand that they’re a mark and that they’ve been targeted and victimized – to give money, to do something they normally wouldn’t do, both, etc – is exceedingly difficult because the cognitive and emotional costs of admitting what has happened is very, very, very, very high. And given that in a society and state with a 1st amendment it is almost impossible to remove the information, the purveyors and manipulators of the information, and the information sources.

Lots of the institutional problems could be fixed easily if we could just pass a law. All those absurd, trollish attacks on the ACA, and the weird holes punched in it by the Court–all that could be patched up in a day if we could just pass simple legislative fixes. @Omnes Omnibus: It was apparently Beau Biden’s favorite band. Chris Martin actually performed at Beau’s funeral.

    @Geoduck:

I agree of course that you should mask up on a plane, but I read an article recently claiming that there have been surprisingly few COVID clusters centered around air travel, possibly because with modern systems the air on board gets entirely recycled every few minutes.

    Fixed it for you.

@Geoduck: I read an article recently claiming that there have been surprisingly few COVID clusters centered around air travel, possibly because with modern systems the air on board gets entirely recycled every few minutes.

It also might have something to do with the fact that the humidity of air at operating altitude is practically 0%. Tends to dry out any airborne droplets & might deactivate the virus.

(As a side note: Cabin air is sucked in toward the front of the plane & passes through to exit at the rear. So safest place to be from a virus-transmission standpoint is closest to the front. Of course, safest place from a crash standpoint is as far back as possible. You pays your ticket, you takes your choice…)

@J R in WV: I prefer a football metaphor, but YMMV:

Joe baited him into throwing to the sideline, jumped the route & took it to the house for a pick-6.

@trnc: …one of the employees suggested – I kid you not – a screen door.

No, no, your hearing (from decades of 300 dB listening no doubt) is so damaged you misunderstood: He said buy a scream door. //

@Matt McIrvin:  So the longterm solution is a new GOP whose policy objectives are not the wholesale destruction of our democratic institutions.
