Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

This must be what justice looks like, not vengeful, just peaceful exuberance.

Every decision we make has lots of baggage with it, known or unknown.

Hey Washington Post, “Democracy Dies in Darkness” was supposed to be a warning, not a mission statement.

Republican also-rans: four mules fighting over a turnip.

Shallow, uninformed, and lacking identity

They fucked up the fucking up of the fuckup!

Republicans do not pay their debts.

Impressively dumb. Congratulations.

Take hopelessness and turn it into resilience.

The “burn-it-down” people are good with that until they become part of the kindling.

I did not have this on my fuck 2025 bingo card.

When someone says they “love freedom”, rest assured they don’t mean yours.

People are weird.

Republicans want to make it harder to vote and easier for them to cheat.

But frankly mr. cole, I’ll be happier when you get back to telling us to go fuck ourselves.

The truth is, these are not very bright guys, and things got out of hand.

“The defense has a certain level of trust in defendant that the government does not.”

You cannot love your country only when you win.

A snarling mass of vitriolic jackals

You know it’s bad when the Project 2025 people have to create training videos on “How To Be Normal”.

The Supreme Court cannot be allowed to become the ultimate, unaccountable arbiter of everything.

Stop using mental illness to avoid talking about armed white supremacy.

The cruelty is the point; the law be damned.

Dear Washington Post, you are the darkness now.

That is an incredibly thin list. We’ve heard from three former US presidents.

As I said a little differently in the earlier thread, as much as the Trumpified GOP resents GWB, it also likely burns them up that he avoided 2016 and is in total hiding now.

    Open thread?

The mountains on both sides of Silicon Valley are afire, lit in literally hundreds of places by lightning a few nights ago, and now growing and joining.   The governments have nothing like the resources required to fight fire on this scale.

Big Basin Park has burned.  The mountain communities of Bonny Doon and Felton have fire on their outskirts, and are losing houses.  Felton and Boulder Creek and La Honda have evacuated.   The Santa Cruz mountain fire is only a mile from the campus of the University of Santa Cruz.

On the other side, part of the front side and the entire back side of Mount Hamilton are burning, and I fear for the observatory.  Del Valle regional park is burning.

North of the Bay, an enormous fire is building strength in the hills above the wine country.

These are huge fires, and are pretty much 0% controlled.

The state government has advised everyone in the entire state to make preparations to evacuate if so ordered.  We’re filling the gas tanks on the cars, parking nose-out, buying bottled water, and thinking through what belongs in the go bag.

No rain in the forecast — only continued high temperatures.

Trump does not want to send emergency aid to California, because most of us won’t vote for him.

I’ll be glad when 2020 is over.

We sold the cabin in Blue Jay a year ago because I decided I was too old to sift through the ashes of a place I love, because I know that the next time that mountain catches fire, they won’t be able to save the town, let alone a cabin 800 feet from town.

I’m now thinking Pismo Beach: unlikely to burn, outside the fire areas,  there’s a way to get there that isn’t much threatened by the fires, many motels, reasonable temperatures, a beach where we can get some socially-distanced time together.

He also expressed annoyance at an article in the FTFNYT by Peter Baker that disingenuously tried to pretend that Obama’s speech was about how much he has at stake, how much Obama’s legacy would be destroyed, as if Obama was that shallow. As if Obama wasn’t raising the alarm for the loss of our country and the end of democracy.
