Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

This really is a full service blog.

I’d hate to be the candidate who lost to this guy.

I’d try pessimism, but it probably wouldn’t work.

Too often we hand the biggest microphones to the cynics and the critics who delight in declaring failure.

It’s the corruption, stupid.

Only Democrats have agency, apparently.

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

I like you, you’re my kind of trouble.

Optimism opens the door to great things.

It’s always darkest before the other shoe drops.

They traffic in fear. it is their only currency. if we are fearful, they are winning.

“Squeaker” McCarthy

This fight is for everything.

“Can i answer the question? No you can not!”

Our job is not to persuade republicans but to defeat them.

Damn right I heard that as a threat.

An almost top 10,000 blog!

Their freedom requires your slavery.

Nothing worth doing is easy.

They love authoritarianism, but only when they get to be the authoritarians.

If you’re pissed about Biden’s speech, he was talking about you.

Republicans are the party of chaos and catastrophe.

Whatever happens next week, the fight doesn’t end.

Russian mouthpiece, go fuck yourself.

Malaysia’s daily numbers. Eight new cases. Five from local infection, all Malaysians, from the Tawar memorial-service cluster in Kedah. Three imported cases: one Malaysian, returning from the Netherlands; two non-Malaysians, one arriving from Bangladesh, one from the Philippines detected in screening while in detention. Cumulative reported total 9,257 cases.

Four more patients recovered and were discharged, for a total of 8,949 patients recovered — 96.7% of the cumulative reported total. Active and contagious cases currently being isolated/treated in hospital rose slightly to 183 patients; eight are in ICU, four of them on respirators.

No new deaths since 31st July; the total remains at 125 deaths — 1.35% of the cumulative reported total, 1.38% of resolved cases.

According to the data of California it’s more so for Latinos than any group too. “After adjusting for population, Latinos are now 3.3 times more likely to test positive than white people.”

Also something I noticed from the data that is really skewed is the majority of those most infected are 18 to 34 and the majority of those who are dying are 50 +. so the kill your parents and grandparents disease.

Like a lot of jackals I read Anne’s COVID-19 update every morning and find it very useful, but also feel a bit guilty about just taking advantage of all Anne’s work.  I realized I have at least of bit of relevant experience and decided to try to make a contribution. I will try to keep up with the FDA’s COVID-19 related Emergency Use Authorizations (EUA). The FDA web site lists all of them and gives the letter of approval (which includes all the conditions and restrictions) , an overview of details, the required patient information sheet, and an information sheet for health care providers. There is a ton of information in these documents and I doubt most people will find it useful to read through all of them, but I hope that it will give people a sense of the amount of work that goes on that doesn’t make it into the media.

COVID-19 related Emergency Use Authorizations (EUA) for Aug 15 – Aug 21, 2020
See FDA page for details and a full list.

    Diagnostics

    1. LumiraDx SARS-CoV-2 Ag Test (LumiraDx UK Ltd) – detection of nucleocapsid protein antigen in nasal swab. Authorized for patient care settings, while most of the 184 diagnostic EUAs require a full certified laboratory. Also supposed to take 12 minutes from collection to result. It uses a kind of slide that fits into a machine that looks somewhat like a credit card reader. The news reports talk about it being “low cost” but I haven’t found actual prices for either the test or the machine. It does seem like it has the potential to be very valuable in physician’s offices, tracking and tracing, and potentially other situations, depending in large part of how “low cost” it really is.
    2. COVID-19 Nucleic Acid RT-PCR Test Kit (ZhuHai Sinochips Bioscience Co., Ltd.) – RNA detection in upper respiratory specimens.
    3. BioCheck SARS-CoV-2 IgG and IgM Combo Test BioCheck, Inc.) – detection and differentiation of IgG and IgM antibodies in serum
    4. Diazyme DZ-Lite SARS-CoV-2 IgM CLIA Kit ( Diazyme Laboratories, Inc ) – Qualitative detection of IgM antibodies in serum and plasma

Yesterday, China reported 0 new domestic confirmed cases and 0 new domestic asymptomatic case, for the first time in over a month.
In Ürumqi, there are currently 227 confirmed and 78 asymptomatic cases at Ürumqi, with 17 cases in serious condition. 47 confirmed cases recovered yesterday and were released from hospitals, 15 asymptomatic cases were released from medical quarantine,  3 serious cases improved to moderate conditions. There are 5,342 close contacts remain under quarantine and medical observation.
At Dalian in Liaoning Province, 11 cases are currently in the hospital. There are 686 individuals remaining under quarantine
Shenzhen and Shanwei in Guangdong Province did not report any new domestic cases. Guangdong Provincial Heath Commission just announced that the strain of COVID-19 virus from the recent small outbreak is 99.99% March to the HK1 strain that is currently prevalent in Hong Kong, so most likely the source is some kind of import from the territory.
Yesterday, China reported 22 new imported confirmed cases, 34 imported asymptomatic cases, and 1 imported suspect case:

    • Shanghai Municipality – 13 confirmed cases, 9 Chinese nationals and a British national returning from the UK or Turkey (via Moscow), 1 Chinese nationals returning from Ethiopia, South Sudan and Ecuador (via Amsterdam): 1 suspect case, no information released
    • Shijiazhuang in Hebei Province – 3 confirmed and 13 asymptomatic cases, no information released
    • Rizhao in Shandong Province – 3 confirmed and 5 asymptomatic cases, all Bengali nationals off a cargo ship
    • Xi’an in Shaanxi Province – 2 confirmed cases, both Chinese nationals returning from Singapore; 2 asymptomatic cases, 1 Chinese National each returning from Singapore and the Uk (via Lisbon)
    • Fuzhou in Fujian Province – 1 confirmed case, a Chinese national returning from Madagascar
    • Tianjin Municipality – 4 asymptomatic cases; all Chinese construction workers returning from Singapore
    • Guangzhou in Guangdong Province – 3 asymptomatic cases, 1 Chinese national each returning from Singapore, Saudi Arabia and Mexico
    • Shenzhen in Guangdong Province – 1 asymptomatic cases, a Chinese national each returning from Indonesia
    • Foshan in Guangdong Province – 1 asymptomatic cases, a Chinese national each returning from Australia
    • Jiangsu Province – 2 asymptomatic cases, no information released
    • Chengdu in Sichuan Province – 1 asymptomatic case, a Chinese national returning from Moscow the Philippines
    • Hefei in Anhui Province – 1 asymptomatic case, a Chinese national returning from the Ukraine
    • Yanji in Jilin Province – 1 asymptomatic case, a Chinese national returning from South Korea

Today, Hong Kong reported 26 new cases, 24 from local transmission, 7 of whom do not have clear source of transmission.

    The numbers Down Under:

    Australia overall:

200 cases in the last 24 hours

    4546 active cases (estimated)

    485 total deaths

    Victoria:

182 cases in the last 24 hours

    4293 active cases (estimated)

    398 total deaths

13 deaths in the last 24 hours

That’s a substantial drop from the more than 7000 active cases earlier in the week, and it’s now the second day running with less than 200 new cases in Victoria (the lowest since mid-July). A substantial portion of the cases (and the large majority of current deaths) are in the aged care sector, with (I think) over 1000 cases in health care workers. Things are definitely going the right way here, but it’s not dropping as fast as hoped. We’re three weeks into Stage 4 restrictions in Melbourne, with another three to go – and no guarantees at that point, as decisions will be made based on what’s happening by then in terms of numbers, unexplained transmissions etc

Meanwhile, there’s been an outbreak of nine cases in Queensland, with six linked to a youth detention centre. In response, more stringent restrictions have been reimposed on the Greater Brisbane area and more broadly in the state (though not nearly as strict as Melbourne). A couple of security guards at a quarantine hotel in Sydney have been diagnosed, and the contact tracers have yet to establish any link between those cases. Coupled with the resurgence in New Zealand, there are still a lot of nervous people (and politicians) all over the country.

    @Enhanced Voting Techniques:

People of color make up just under 40% of the U.S. population but accounted for approximately 52% of all the “excess deaths” through July,

According to the data of California it’s more so for Latinos than any group too. “After adjusting for population, Latinos are now 3.3 times more likely to test positive than white people.”

State and county health officials need to stop lumping all people of color together, and get more sophisticated in looking at groups and behaviors. A recent LA Times story looked at another group that appears to be suffering disproportionately.

In L.A. County, Pacific Islanders suffer the highest infection rate of any racial or ethnic group, more than 2,500 per 100,000 residents. That’s six times higher than for white people, five times higher than for Black people and three times higher than for Latinos, according to county health demographic data that exclude Long Beach and Pasadena, which have their own health departments.

Health experts say the reasons are similar to why Black people and Latinos are falling ill and dying at higher rates: reduced access to healthcare; higher levels of poverty; crowded housing; multigenerational households that make it more difficult to physically distance or quarantine; and higher rates of underlying health conditions that increase risk for severe illness from COVID-19, such as heart and lung disease, asthma and diabetes. Many Pacific Islanders also work in front-line jobs, such as food service, hospitality and healthcare, at which they are more likely to contract the virus and bring it home.

But as with college students, insistence on holding social gatherings and ignoring the use of masks, social distancing and other safety practices is taking a toll.

You have to look more deeply into behaviors, which overlap ethnicity.

ETA: link to the LA Times story is not provided. I had to jump through some hoops to get past the site pay wall.

I see the higher infection/death rates for non-whites simply illustrates the burden POC have always dealt with in the US.

When you look at people with money and power, they are overwhelmingly white, and only slightly less monolithically male. They are coddled, catered to, and access by far the larger number of resources.

That’s before we even get into how easily they work at home, and how big those homes tend to be.

Thanks again for these daily summaries, AL.

Something that has been bothering me for a while is the “active cases” numbers at WorldOMeters.

    https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/us/

One of the important ways to know whether we’re making progress is when Active Cases is much less than Total Cases.

Sorting on the Active Cases column lists Virginia as #6 and Ohio as #28. Why? By others measures, like fatalities, Ohio is doing much worse than Virginia. Well, it seems that Virginia does not have a central repository for recovered cases.

    https://www.whsv.com/2020/07/12/the-latest-virginia-covid-19-cases/

Ohio may report things differently. All states may report things differently. :-/

I’d say it ships in November, but arrives on January 20.

As many others here have noted, Anne’s daily updates are essential reading for me. Over a month ago, I started posting similar daily updates to a local chat group. I do check other sources but Anne’s links probably form about 3/4 of my own daily posts. For the record, I do give her credit in those posts.

That said, I have been remiss in posting my own gratitude for these posts of hers and also wanted to pass along the compliments I have been receiving for my own daily posts, since I think they rightfully should go to her. On average, I get about 4 “thank you” emojis a day. In addition, here are some comments from others in the forum:

“Lots and lots of gratitude and appreciation for all your work!” [7 people added their agreement.]

“Your summaries are the only place I look to right now for covid-info, so I really appreciate it. I get a little overwhelmed trying to sort through articles myself.” [7 others added a “+1”]

“I just wanted to say how much I appreciate your covid updates, they have become my main trusted source of covid news and I appreciate how much time must go into them. I’d love to support a cause on your behalf to say thank you – please just let me know if anything comes to mind!” [I suggested the local food bank.]

“Thank you soo much for putting in the time and effort for these updates everyday! I take a look at this every morning for my news haha”

“I really appreciate all of the constant updates. You’re my main source of COVID news these days and its been invaluable to be able to wake up and check each day!”

“Thank you. Really appreciate all the work you put into this every day. I can only imagine the time and research that goes into it. Thank you, thank you!”

“Same. I really appreciate it. This has become one of the regular reads I do and regular sources of information that I keep in mind when verifying/validating/challenging my biases.”

So Anne, please accept my belated but very heartfelt thanks for your efforts, as well as the grateful appreciation of those in the local chat group who also benefit.

@PaulB: Thank you for reminding me that I’ve been remiss. Such effort demands recompense. I couldn’t find a way to donate to Anne Laurie specifically, but since the information comes through this site I donated there. This is a *super* valuable public service, consistently of higher quality than any other source/aggregator I know of. *Thank you* Anne Laurie and everyone else who participates.

It was looking hopeful for our county WRT new daily case counts, well down from all-time highs in July. Then California fixed the data base glitch and poof, hundreds of “new” cases appeared on the graphs, and the trendline is barely downward. Sigh. 20-29 is the highest infected age range while by far the most deaths are 60+.

The fundy Christian high school began classes by calling themselves “day care” but the county figured out that little scheme and shut them down. Schools are all going with remote learning for fall.

The UK-wide figures were published at 4pm as usual. There were 190,434 tests processed today and 1,288 new cases nationwide. As far as the Home Nations are concerned, they break down as follows. As Robert Sneddon hasn’t looked in I’ll include the Scottish figures today.

England 1,060; Scotland 123; Northern Ireland 71 and Wales 34. The Scottish figures show a big jump. I assume this is related to the idiots in Aberdeen some weeks ago and the cluster in the meat packing plant he mentioned previously but, overall, the number of new cases seems to be holding steady.

There were 18 new deaths reported today, 17 in England and 1 in Wales.

There were 97 new admissions to hospital, the majority in England with Wales a close second. There are currently 834 patients in hospital nationwide with COVID-19, of which 72 are on ventilators.

“we think there is a miracle around the corner…a tribute to President Trump’s leadership”

I have managed to ignore Pence for the last four years, but something about this vile combination of self-abasing toadying and promising the True Faithful on God’s behalf that deliverance is just around the corner if they just stay the course, to be handed down by God in the same way I’d deliver a pizza, just really ground me the wrong way.

we think there is a miracle around the corner.

It could happen – Trump could stroke out during one of his “staff meetings” with Pence and accidentally get his cock stuck all the way back in Pence’s throat as he’s convulsing, suffocating the little pig bottom. COVID response problem solved.

    @Matt:

If by “miracle” Pence means a large man with a club and “around the corner” he means the large man will appear suddenly and smack Pence in the kisser, then I approve.

“Trust us” from the Trump admin can only be taken as a threat.

Hey Pence, that miracle is named Joe Biden.  Actually he’s the bonus: the miracle will be simply seeing you two finally tossed.  Insofar as that’s a reflection on T’s “leadership”, I suppose one could call that tribute.

And uh, didn’t he put you in charge of all this BTW?

There was a study of the infection rates in various Massachusetts small cities – Brockton, Fall River, Holyoke etc. – and the one factor that stood out was population density measured in residents/room.
